Subject: squirrels & Nick's excuse

Libs! You've seen squirrels at night?! Wow. We're over-run with them in
our little town here in the Midwest and I've never seen one out after dark.
There was one crazed squirrel who desperately kept trying to build a
nest in our big maple one evening about ten years ago at twilight.
S/he was quite inept--kept dropping sticks right and left. But even
that one scampered off to dreamland by the time it was pitch dark.
Your suggestion that they might get chased out of their nests by
another animal makes good sense. Also, maybe city lights confuse them
and keep them up. In our town, most people turn off their porch
lights by 9 or 10 (assuming they ever lit them in the first place)
and toddle off to beddy-bye.

The opossum has gradually extended its range (see Audubon field guide
for mammals). They are now quite common in northern Illinois and
central Iowa. (Maybe farther north, too, but I can personally vouch
for northern Illinois and central Iowa.) Their little bald ears and
tail tend to get frostbitten, but it doesn't faze them. Who knows?
In a few more years, the vampires of Toronto will be able to yell--or
sip--"'possum".

Has anyone else seen a squirrel after dark? Maybe Nick is better at excuses
than I thought.

Probably a coon would have been a better choice. They are definitely
on the prowl at night here in Toronto.

As for Squirrels I don't know. I have never noticed any around after dark
but then I don't have Nick's keen eyesight. What I do know is that
there is an endless supply of them and the ones who live in my area even
if they don't wander about all night, are most decidedly up and about by
the crack of dawn if not earlier. That way they can eat up the all the
seed in my birdfeeder not to mention my birdfeeder itself before the birds
get there.

Debbie who is ashamed to admit she has been out smarted by the local
squirrel population this year.

well, they do have those really neat black squirrels. Maybe they're nocturnal?

Uh-oh, now you've done it!! I had a sudden vision of Screed attaching bushy
little squirrel tails to his head gear. Sort of a Davy Crockett look for
the carouche set :-)

I've seen them -- or at least road kill that once was them -- in New Jersey
and eastern Pennsylvania.

IIRC, there are a couple of squirrel species that are specifically
nocturnal (the red squirrel and flying squirrel come to mind, but I might
be mistaken on both!), though they're not nearly as likely to be city
dwellers as the more common grayish squirrel.

Nick's excuses have required a lot of cheese; in the case of the knife in
Blackwing, a limburger sandwich with onions. <g>

But the squirrel discussion has me thinking, "Mmm, squirrel pot pie!" I
must be channeling my inner carouche...

Nah, cause possums don't run. They just lay down in the road and pretend to
be dead. 'Course, when the car runs over them, they stop pretending.
Reminds me of the old Southern joke. Why did the chicken cross the road?
To show the possum it could be done.

I'm starting to think that a bat would have been a much better excuse for Nick.
At least, a flying bat at night would make more sense. <g>

When Tracy pulls back the sheet and sees the fang marks she has to be
wondering what Natalie and Nick thought. The way she looked back at them
right after seeing the bite marks make it somewhat clear that she knows they
saw them too. It's almost as if she's wondering if Natalie and Nick suspect
or know the truth.

Popping out of lurkdom....
Watching HoD I thought it rather odd that when Natalie pointed out that
Echarts killer was probably a female vampire he went straight to Vachon to
ask about Urs. Its seemed as if he knew a part of her mortal history as a
victim of abuse and automatically assumed she would use her vampiric power
against someone who would remind her of her abusers.

Anyone have any thoughts why? Or does anyone else see it differently?

My personal speculation is that maybe she had become his go to person for
sex after Janette had left. Its just that we were never told about it.

Anyway, back to lurking.

Actually, I've seen a fair number of squirrels out at night...and a lot of
squirel flavoured road kill. There are a lot more out during the day, but
I'll also see some at night when I'm driving...almost hit one once, too, so
maybe Nick's excuse is at least possible, even if it is a little weak. But
then, I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so it mught just be the area I'm in.

Where I am now...well, there's this albino squirrel that's just crazy. With
all of the mention of Screed and carouches, I can't help but wonder if it's
had a few close encounters... :P

I always wondered about that in season 3 too. I mean, in
seasons 1 and 2 they clearly showed where Nick went to
let some steam off. But what about after Janette left?
Isn't ‘not sharing blood’ for a long period of time for
vampires the equal to sex deprivation for humans? Maybe
that's the reason why he finally snapped in LK?

Subject: Re: squirrels & Nick's excuse

Jarvinia mentioned albino squirrels, which made me think
about the white squirrels that live in my neighborhood.
THere's a handful of them that live in the oak trees on
the next street.

When I walk Carrie Ann, Warrior Dachshund, she naturally
keeps an eye out for squirrels to chase (as far as her
16-foot leash goes, at least). The squirrels in return
watch out for us, and usually glue themselves to tree
trunks and freeze so as not to draw attention to
themselves as we go by.

Now, this works well with gray squirrels. They're tree-
colored. But the albino ones---there they are, with
millions of years of squirrel survival tactics built
into their brains, glued to a tree, thinking, "I'm a
tree! I'm a tree!"---only they haven't factored in that
white fur. They look like snowballs plastered to the
gray tree trunks! If Carrie Ann could climb those trees
there would be fewer white squirrels in the world. <g>

So, do vampires dress in black so they can't be spotted
easily when flying around at night? Is that what those
opera capes are really for---to cover the blond hair so
they don't stand out while hovering outside windows?
