Subject: Reporting in from Toronto

The CN Tower has been closed to the public. Most of the office buildings
downtown have closed and the occupants sent home. All the airports in
Canada are attempting to deal with the sudden influx of planes that had
American destinations but were diverted to Canada. The Mayor of Toronto
has asked Torontonians to open their homes to billet the Americans and
others who are now stranded here.

Even the Toronto hospitals have been put on alert in case aid is needed
and the Blood Donation centres are swamped with people who want to
donate blood.

My heart goes out to my friends in the US today, especially those in NYC
and DC. Please, please check in when you are able to.

Wow, I haven't even really thought about that story in so long... *g*

(Mind you, today I'm not doing much thinking in general...just being
shocky. Glad to hear from all the listsibs who've checked in to say

I'm fine. I'm a US Federal Employee (NASA) who works in a Maryland
suburb of DC. I went to work late today and I had just arrived
when we were sent home as a precaution. I drove home via the
"back way" because traffic in the whole DC metro area was supposed
to be horrendous with all the governement agencies sending all
of their non-emergency people home simultaneously. Also some roads
and bridges were said to be closed to everyone except emergency
personnel.

Earlier the TV news said we were to keep the phone lines clear
but at this point I think it's ok to be online.

I've watched the news all day, talked with my kids at school, cried and
read the messages to the list. I can't thank everyone enough for the
virtual hand holding that we've been doing today. I'm in San Angelo,
Texas. I live about 3 miles from an Air Force Training Base and only 100
miles from the B1 base in Abilene. Scary? Unquestionably, but right now
we're all trying to keep our lives going in as normal a fashion as
possible.

Every person (which is every person on this earth) who is or will be

Checking in from Minnesota. The Twin Cities airport, the IDS
building and the Mall of America were shut down. So were some
schools, but not the one where I take night classes. Most people
here are just in shock, which I imagine is the same all over.
I don't have web access at work, but co-workers have radios and there
is a TV in the hallway that always has the news channel on, which
most people gathered around on their breaks to watch. Seeing the
pictures is just incredible.

In an attempt to try and keep this on topic, what do you think the
reactions of Nick & company would be? I think Nick would angst a
great deal and LaCroix would mock the terrorists in a monologue as
the Nightcrawler. That would be a show to listen to.

It was so surreal! Like a movie...

I called my mum at work this morning a little before 9 and when I
transferred the call, instead of music was a report about finding a tail
section. She picked up the line and I made the comment that we had another
plane crash (thinking regular crash) and we both ignored it after that. Then
I got in my car about 90 minutes later and then learned that the WTC towers
were hit, as well as the Pentagon. All I could think of was- please God, let
this be someone's sick idea of a joke!

Why innocent people, we never did that to them! I could see them taking out
a military installation, but the toll of *innocent* people killed... I don't
know whether to cry or vomit :\

I'm in downtown DC, and it was absolute chaos at about 10:30 when
they let us out of class and evacuated all of the federal buildings.
Giving credit to the Metro Police Department, things had cleared up
completely in about two hours (I know that seems like a long time,
but we were thinking that the gridlock could continue for most of the
evening). Right now things are spookily calm downtown, obviously
Bush just got back, but there is a huge perimiter around the White
House and we've heard that there are National Guard members
mobilizing all around the city (VA and MD federalized their National
Guard earlier this afternoon).

I have to say that this afternoon was one of the scariest in my life,
and this is absolutely nothing compared to what is comming out of New
York right now. I'd like to back up what other list members have
said, blood donation centers here are overwhealmed (and the medical
personal are obviously busy elsewhere), I street had a backup of 7
hours because they only had two stations, so if you're in an area
where you can readily give blood (or have a car) please give blood.

My roomates and I are off to church, and you are in all of our
prayers (this is one situation that defies denomination).

Love and Prayers,
Anne

My first impression was that the attack was right out of a Tom Clancy
novel. IIRC, he had used something similar -- but with only one
airplane -- as a plot device. They interviewed him this afternoon as
I was driving to school (I take night classes). It struck me as
ironic that his comment was that no author could have dreamed up an
event of this magnitude as a plot. It feels surreal, though. One
person at my workplace remarked that he thought it was a War of the
Worlds joke for a few minutes. You know how some radio stations do
morning shows and have crazy stuff.

I'm in Minnesota, and the major targets here -- the IDS tower and the
Mall of America -- were shut down.

I'm getting so sick of so many people on TV, mostly newscasters and government
officials, comparing this tragedy to Pearl Harbor. The WTC was not a military
installation, and though the Pentagon is a government agency, once again it's
not military. These were innocents, not military personnel who signed up
knowing the risks. I'm not trying to make less of the tragedy of Pearl Harbor,
but to me, this situation is even sicker/worse. Comparing it to Hiroshima and
Nagasaka is a much more accurate description. What a shame! So many human
lives (and animals, too) thrown away just to make a point!

(1) And what of all of the lives Our Favorite Vamps have thrown away????

(2) While most of us here believe that these attacks were a shame and a
waste of precious lives, not every culture has the same values we do. Some
believe that the only lives with inherent value are those of male adult
believers; others believe that the value of life is to die well. In dying

Not only that, but neither civilian not military personnel at Pearl Harbor
had any more reason to expect an attack than did those today. We were not
at war with Japan, we had committed no aggressive action toward them, in
fact the Japanese ambassador had just been visiting with President
Roosevelt.

To all our friends in Canada, THANK YOU! For your
thoughts, prayers and for taking care of our stranded
travelers. I am in Nebraska and still in shock. I
can not imagine what any one is going thru that is
there or have loved ones there. Please continue to
think of us and once again thank you. Phylis

I called Canadian Blood Services here, several times, but couldn't get
through. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'd like to add my condolences to Sunny's. They've diverted several flights
here to Winnipeg, and the hotels downtown are packed--people are having to
double up rooms just to get a place to sleep. The city is providing bus
transportation for everyone, and we're being discouraged from calling the
U.S. I've been online all day making sure my friends are all right, and I'm
glad to hear folks from the list reporting in.

Last night I fell asleep while making an FK tape for a friend--the last
episode I put on it was Black Buddha. When my mother woke me up this morning
I thought I was still dreaming.

My deepest sympathies to all. I knew someone (well, a friend of a friend)
who was on Flight 11, along with his wife, and just knowing that is making
me physically ill.

What a terrifying thing to have happen.

Eve.

As I recall, it was the Palestinians who started trying to mass murder
(drive into the Medditeranean Sea) the Isrealites. They stated as much then
put actions to words in such things as the 6 Day War. Do Israel soldiers
kill Palestineans? Yup. But usually because the Palestinians are throwing
rocks (which can be quite deadly as history shows and that is why the
kids/ect throw them.)

I support Israel in their fight to exist despite so many enemies and I will
continue to support them and any other group under such straights. If the
Arabs lost land---well, they shouldn't have started the war. I think it's
too bad Israel didn't get more. They need the buffer.

Are the people of Israel and the US saints? Heck no. But I like us and our
morals a sight better than people who do victory dances when thousands of
people die.

Hi Marg,

I'm fine, but I do have one friend who worked in TWTC
and we haven't heard from him yet. But that's not
unusual. There are just so many who haven't made it
home yet, and even if they are safe might not have
been able to reach anyone on the phone. Guess I'm just
heartsore like everyone else.
Ad Astra,
June
