Sorry---that was supposed to be private and right now I am blushing at my

day. Can we all just leave the commentary to making sure everyone is
allright and on FK itself? Enough things have exploded today.

Someone said something about not judging others by our standards. I think
that's a good idea within limits. But killing thousands, perhaps tens of
thousands, of civilians is way past my limit of moral relativism.

June, thanks for letting us know that you are safe.

All day, people having been leaving flowers at the door of the US
Consulate in Toronto out of sympathy and respect. The Muslim community
in Toronto have expressed their horror and sorrow for the events in the
US. About 50 of the Toronto EMS service have volunteered to assist NYC
EMS and are readying medical supplies to bring with them.

There are massive lineups at the Ontario border crossings which were
closed briefly, but are now open again, but under strict security.

There's so many friends I haven't heard from yet. I hope you're OK.

A small correction--the Pentagon is the command center of the US military
forces. It is indeed a military target, although there are many civilian
employees working there.

If it were RL I'd think it was most tragic. Even though it's only fiction, I
still feel sorry for the characters that fell victim to our FK vamps, as I'm
sure Nick does also.

Though I admire the Japanese and their culture, I still feel that Seppuku and
Jisatsu are still a shame and basically a waste of life. I might understand
it, somewhat (it's hard with my limited Western views and Roman Catholic
upbringing), but it doesn't mean I have to like it. And chances are, even if I
understood it, I won't be performing either of those ceremonies. No matter
what, though, if that's part of their culture and they want to practice it,
that's fine, I don't judge. The problem I have is when someone, I don't care
who they are or what their culture is, has a belief that (s)he tries to push
upon someone else. To me this is the situation that happened today. They may
think that dying for their beliefs is all well and good - now they've hurt
their enemies' allies (i.e. Israel) - but, in reality, what have they
accomplished? They've put to death themselves (I don't want to say "who cares",
but who cares?), they've killed over 500 people in this country, and now
they've made a much bigger enemy - US; the United States.

Every time I see the pictures on TV of those planes hitting those buildings, I
feel a pain in my chest and I want to cry. How many of those people in the
planes and in those buildings wanted to die? I don't know the answer either,
but I'm guessing that it was probably a lot less than all of those that did.
And all they were doing was taking a plane to go somewhere or working for a
living to make enough money to *live* the American dream, not die well.

No, I won't judge them by 'our' standards. It's not for me to judge. That
honor goes to a Higher Authority.

Granted Pearl Harbor was a miliatry installation but there were hundreds of

I am not sure this has really hit me yet. I think what might have been for me.
My daughter was living in Manhattan, she has a lot of friends there. My brother
in law worked near there and was always going to the towers for work. I had a
friend who was at the top of the towers just a couple of weeks ago. I feel
pretty lucky as everyone I know is all right.

I do have a couple of pics that a sister of a friend took from a building on the
11th floor before the people there were evacuated. She actually caught the 2nd
plane flying toward the tower and then the explosion after it hit.

The main news organizations have pinpointed Osama Bin Laden as the
culprit, because he is the logical choice and there was some data
that possibly linked the hijackers to him. So it is not judging an
entire culture, but rather the extremist beliefs and hatred of a very
few. There are always a few bad apples in every barrel; Bin Laden is
apparently one of them.

Since she only has computer access at work, I just thought I'd let y'all
know that one of the lurkers on this list who played with NA in the last
war, Beverly Gordon, is alive and well, if suffering from the same shock we
all feel. She works in Manhattan but was away from the area of
destruction. Some of you met her at LCA last year. It took a while for me
to reach her as they didn't release her from work until about 2:30, and
then she had to walk across the bridge and catch a subway in Queens.

Now that I know that she's okay, that my husband's Aunt, Uncle and Cousin
are okay, and that Lora wasn't at the Pentagon yesterday, my little list
has been checked off. I pray that the rest of you are so fortunate.

Well, Pensacola is basically a Naval Air Base surrounded by Air Force and
Army bases. I guess the country is just full of potential targets, and we
can't get ourselves into a panic over what *could* happen. We just have to
deal with things one step at a time, take it one day at a time, and hold
onto one another in order to make it through.

I am worried for Susan Honig whose husband is an NYC police officer, and
Julia Kocich and Marla Kaye who both live and work in Manhattan, and
Knightwitch who's husband works in the city also. I know there must be
other list members, but I am too frazzled right now to think. I hope that
they and all their friends and loved ones are OK. And I hope that they can
all check in with us as soon as it is possible.

I am on Long Island and therefore out of harms way - but the evidence that
something dreadful happened has touched even us. In addition to friends,
neighbors and families who are tied to the tragedy, there is also an eerie
silence in the skies since the airports are closed. Just a moment ago, we
were drawn outside because we could all hear several military jets flying
overhead. And yesterday, cell phone service was spotty, Internet access was
limited, and there were no commuter trains running bringing people back home
from Manhattan. Roads, bridges and tunnels are still closed inbound to
Manhattan, except for emergency personnel with photo IDs and driving in
marked cars.

The pictures of the horror and the devastation will stay with me for a long
time, but what I will not be able to shake are those images of those
passenger jets, filled with innocent human beings, being flown into occupied
office buildings filled with more innocents. And then watching those tall,
massive edifaces of glass, steel and concrete, simply crumbling to the
ground.

Go in peace,
Julia Brooks

Hi-
Thank you to all those who have offered condolences. I live in NJ
about 45 min from Manhattan. I work in a hospital which is a
regional trauma center so we were watching this all very intently
yesterday. We got the notification that we were one of the possible
hosiptals that victims from NYC may be routed to. When I finally
got home from work I cried! I could see the plume of smoke and ash
from near my home. Several of the people I work with had loved ones
who worked in the towers. I personally have a cousin that may have
been in the Pentagon. We haven't heard anything about him as of
yet.
I go into Manhattan quite often and it will never be the same.

Amanda reported in and appended this inspiring quote:

"Peace over anger. Honor over hate. Strength over fear."

I am as horrified, disgusted and appalled by the events of yesterday as
anyone, I think. But I do not want a war out of this! I am encouraged by
the fact that most people on the lists I'm on and in the online forums I've
visited are urging calm and a reasoned, efficient approach to seeking out
and dealing with those responsible. I know our primal urge is to shriek,
"kill them!" but first we have to *find* them. I think it will be a major
step in our evolution if, instead of 'letting loose the hounds of war,' we
find those responsible and turn them over to be tried at The Hague. JMHO
and YMMV.

My head hurts. I'm sick to my stomach. I sure as shooting don't want to go
into school today and I don't think I'll get much accomplished.

To those living near military bases: AFAIK, the military is still on alert
today. A military base on full alert is most likely a very safe place to be
near, because along with watching out for themselves, they're watching out
for the surrounding community (even if they do refer to you sometimes as
'the perimeter' <weak grin>).

<<Reacting to fears of a shortage of funds in markets, the European Central Bank
swiftly supplied cash to the markets to help restore confidence and stave off
the risk of a global recession in the wake of the attacks on New York's World
Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The attacks struck the heart of New York's financial district and dealers said
the incidents would certainly weaken the U.S. economy, and by extension the
global economy, which central banks could counter with rate cuts.

The ECB said it will instantly lend $63 billion (70 billion) to the markets and
the Bank of Japan said it supply almost $17 billion.>>

Isn't that great? We're all pulling together as parts, single people into the

Subject: Tragedy

I live in Berkeley, CA. I currently work for a firm that does fundraising
non-profits via the phone. WNET (the New York PBS station) is one of our
clients. Our office was closed yesterday and will be today and I doubt we
will be calling for this client for some time to come. I cannot help but
wonder how many of the people I've talked with over the years (as a
fundraiser and now a verifier) are dead, injured or have lost loved ones.
(Also, my housemate was to be back from Europe yesterday, but is stuck in
Great Britain for the foreseeable future.)

I've read a lot of history. Humans do terrible things to one another, and
frequently the most horrible acts are done in the name of some deity or
other.

LaCroix would definitely go after the terrorists. Even he has his standards.

Anita wrote about the world response, and I just want to add something.

I am so touched and heartened and yes, close to weeping, at the amount of
international support shown by members of the various lists I'm on. On
SmallStuff, a miniatures list with nearly 3000 members, messages of support
came in from the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Brazil,
and South Africa--just to name what I can remember. On the KEB (Kai
Estrogen Brigade--and Testosterone Annex), one listmember in Scotland is
tracking down individual listmembers who haven't reported in and forwarding
their responses to the list for our comfort and reassurance, while offering
up his own sympathy and virtual hugs.

Off to school. Everybody take care of yourselves, now.

If anyone wants to make small pics (about the size of a browser button) the
FKFanFic2 will put them up on a special Memorial page. Will put up almost
anything that is appropriate, stories, rl vignettes, whatever.

Subject: Re: Giving blood

This time last year, someone I loved receive multiple units of blood. I
couldn't donate because I was recovering from the flu, and being unable to
give was quite devastating to me. If you're a similar situation now,
remember that there are other ways to help, such as giving money to the Red
Cross. To make a donation by phone using your credit card, please call the
Canadian Red Cross office in your area, or call toll free 1-800-418-1111.
(The American Red Cross website, www.redcross.org, is unavailable right
now. Check your local phone book.)

Remember to ask yourself the question, "Would I want my blood to go to
somebody I love?" If the answer is no, because you're feeling unwell, wait
until you're better; the need for blood will still be there, a week or a
month from now, to replace the blood that will be used in the days to come.
The last thing a trauma victim needs is bad blood, no matter how good the
donor's intention.

Sincerely,
Angela Gottfred

I also don't think we can turn a blind eye to the policies of our government
which have caused so many people to hate Americans so much. Check out this

and scroll down the page to the second picture.

I just spent the greater part of yesterday trying to be in touch with my 17
year old son who I just dropped off in New York City to attend college. We
were lucky, after a day that I would not wish on anyone, we were able to
make contact with him. Some of his friend's parents were not so lucky, and
are still waiting to hear from their children. Are you saying by having us
look at this picture that because America may sell weapons to Israel that
this act was justified? They hate us, this does not give them any right to
do what they did, and nothing will ever justify this loss of life. By
saying that we should not turn a blind eye you are blaming the victim which
in this case happens to be us. We are victims here, innocent victims, do
not excuse or try to understand our oppressors. If you still feel the need
to look at pictures of the terrorists and their people, look at the ones of
them dancing in the streets and celebrating as our people lie dying in
crumbling, burning buildings.
