Hey, I live in California. Southern California, where the sun maybe a bit
bright in the day but at night it's real nice. Of course driving around in
the caddy wouldn't look out of place either. We love gas guzzler's here.

I don't see him as a devout Catholic at all. Lapsed Catholic, imo.
I also think that he would change his belief system if it meant he
could get closer to mortality and happiness. So, if he met someone,
particularly if he met a vampire (or ex-vampire!) that claimed with
sufficient evidence and/or conviction that some sect of Buddhism or
any other religion could and would bring him closer to his goals, I
think he would certainly consider it.

Always interesting to see where everybody is from, especially since I LOVE

I'm from [xxxxxxxxxx], Germany ... some FK fans here or in the general area, but
there are not (yet <eg>) subscribed to the list.
I've lived in Cambridge, UK the past year...didn't really run into an fans
there but KNOW some in the "general England area" LOL
I have my "family connections" in the USA though, which is GREAT for
traveling <G>: Aunt, Uncle and some cousins (no, not THOSE kind of cousins
<G>) in Las Vegas, NV and Orange County, CA and my boyfriend in Texas
(yes, I know that no one wants to know THAT much location wise from me, but
since I met him BECAUSE of FK, it is worth mentioning <eg>.).

okay...going back to lurking, waving "hi" to all who know me....

I always had the impression that even regular light bothers him to some
degree. Why else wearing sunglass at night -- which I always thought was
rather cool. Hence his preference for candles. I dimly remember reading
of rare conditions (porphyria and another as well) where those effected are
severly effected by light -- even lamp light -- and that each exposure has
a cumulative effect. If we relate his sensitivity somewhat to those
conditions (except for being cumulative), then he would find any degree of
light (except for dim light) to be uncomfortable. Especially to his
sensitive eyes.

If this rambles, it's because I'm still half a sleep, and am stalling
getting ready for work by checking my email!

hahaha! I wonder if LaCroix stalls for work by reading his e-mail, or does he
pop right awake and ready to go on the air as the Nightcrawler?

Seems to me he has so many concerns about Nicholas that he does have a few
sleepless... days. But perhaps he is much too old and powerful to have
insomnia.

Subject: FKDATABASE

The database on the egroups list is up and running, and we're starting to get
some entries.

You can join, and go nomail, and still have access to all the features on
egroups, including the FK databases, file sharing area, chat room, and the
calendar (where I try to put Cheryl's monthly VCR Alert on for each day and have
it send reminders).

However, I'd rather *not* have discussions there, as I don't want to pull away
from this list. There may come a day when this list needs to or wants to move
away from the psu server, and if so, I do not want the one on egroups to be a
competing discussion list. I reserved the name ages ago as a "just in case,"
and our listowners here are fully aware of it. But there's no reason not to
take advantage of the other features available.

FYI - McLisa is subbed to the list, and is also set as a Moderator, so
BEHAVE!!! <waves to McLisa>

As for the database online, you can enter as much or as little as you like. The
fields I've put in are:
Name and/or Screen Name
Email
Location
IM ID(s)
Chat ID(s)
Affiliations
Favorite FK Episode
Favorite non-FK show
Comments?

If anyone wants to be put in the database, but for some reason is not ready to
join the egroups list, send me a message OFFLIST with the following subject
line: FKDATABASE and include in the body of the message any info you want to
share, and I'll put you in. I will only add non-subscribers specifically
requesting it. (Meaning, I won't take any of the postings from yesterday and
today saying, "I'm in Texas/California/New York," etc.)

For security reasons, the database is viewable only by members of the list.
(safety feature, to prevent spam abuse and email gathering.) In the event it's
really needed, I can also export the database, although I can't think of a
reason why that would need to happen. It would have to be *really* good.

I am also notified of all new subscribers. If I do not recognize a name/email,
I will query the person on some basic FK trivia, and if they appear to be
klewless, and I believe they are there for purposes other than FK, they will be
unsubbed immediately.

Felix doesn't say they're Gro-Lights, but he does say it's necessary to
stay out of their light while he's lecturing on the virtues of
horticulture, as opposed to mortality seeking, as a vampire avocation.
That's a pretty good argument for ultraviolet being a big part of the
danger, since I think that's the major difference between plant lights and
regular cool-white florescents.

As for sunlight and a vampire's age, doesn't Nick tell Nat's brother that
with time he will gain some tolerance to sunlight, in his orientation
lecture after bringing him across?

And Nick does try sunscreen in the long Canadian version of False Witness.
The "pina colada" odor is Skin Pretty Sunscreen (provided by Myra via
Schanke) according to a conversation in the caddy. Either it doesn't help
or Nick is understandably reluctant to rely on it in such a public situation.

Which makes me wonder if being exposed as a non-human would have
invalidated his testimony even ir he had demonstrably been telling the
truth. There's an issue I don't think even "LA Law" had to deal with. <g>

Interesting question. I think that his testimony would have been valid,
Schanke could have probably backed him up as a credible witness if need be.
However, the Enforcers would have had Nick staked before he could be
cross-examined. (At least, in that ep, which is in a universe where the
Enforcers exist.)

Schanke about the UVA protection in the Skin Pretty sunscreens?

Here's some terminology I've gleaned from various sources.
*Photosensitivity*: a reaction to sunlight that cases irritation, redness,
or swelling of the skin. There are two main kinds of photosensitivity:
_phototoxic_ reactions, which often look like a sunburn; and
_photoallergic_ reactions, which can look like hives or eczema.
Photoallergic reactions often are the result of UVA exposure.
*Photophobia*: inability to tolerate bright light. _Not_ fear of sunlight!
I have the feeling that this word may have been replaced by
"photosensitivity", because of the obvious potential confusion.
*Phototropism*: the movement of plants in response to light. (I guess Tracy
didn't absorb that pre-med stuff too well!)
If anyone can correct me, please feel free!

Your humble & obedient servant,
Ligeiea

All of a sudden I have the vision of Nick on the stand on an ep of "Law and
Order" (why hasn't anyone done a crossover with that show?!? I think Schanke
and Lenny Brisco would get along just fine. <g>) Can't you picture Jack McCoy
trying to figure out how to maintain the credibility of his star witness when
he finds out he's a vampire? Adam Schiff throwing up his hands and proclaiming
that the case is lost, why bother, settle it now? And the defense attorney asking
pointed questions about whether or not Nick was whammying the jury right now to
make them believe him? Talk about your courtroom dramas!

This might be a neat idea! I can see it now "Forever Knight Court." LaCroix as
the judge. Natalie as the expert witness for just about every case. Screed as
the guy who gets hauled in EVERY week. Vachon who just hangs out there because
court might prove entertaining (especially with Screed on the stand). Joe Reese
as the baliff (hmmmm... or Schanke, but maybe Schanke could be the other
attorney). Aristotle as the court recorder.

Or how about "Judge Lucien?" The latest in quasi-reality programming, Judge
Lucien Lacroix presides over a small claims court and listens to incredibly
stupid people accuse each other of petty offenses. He takes the opportunity to
berate and lecture one and all on their stupid behavior, makes pointed remarks
about better ways to alleviate the situation ("His dog bit you? Why didn't you
bite back and kill the beast? Surely you were justified -- revenge is an end in
itself, and you would have spared us all hours of tedious wrangling."). Reporter
Nick Knight interviews complainants as they exit the courtroom, although most are
so stunned after being tonguelashed by the judge they have nothing to say.

The other day I did a few card challenges for fkfic using some bad song titles.

Ran across this one... ( http://www.thirdage.com/community/humor/best.html )

I've *got* to find the words to this one:

   "The Pint of No Return"

And right after it in the list... it's so... so... Schanke:

"I Don't Know Whether to Kill Myself or Go Bowling"

Does anyone know of any good websites where I can obtain current info on

the Canadian equivalent of a search warrant is?

I'd like the info for a FK fanfic. Please contact me off list.
