Nick, in his efforts to blend in with mortals, has become a master of disguise and is "aging" himself. Just like Lazarus Long did in all the Heinlein stories, so he wouldn't have to move on as often as he might otherwise. And do you (or anyone else) know if there are Forensic Pathology programs elsewhere in Canada? Or if there's a regular (non-Forensic) Pathology program in Toronto? I've looked on the net and I don't know where to search. For U.S. Programs, you can look at the American Medical Association page, but there's no analogous area on the Canadian Medical Association Web page! Although apparently she inferred she did her internship in Toronto in "Father's Day"... (thanks, JL for the info). Internship is the first year of residency (at least here in the US... I'm assuming it's the same in Canada). Maybe it's a very obscure continuity gaffe that no one would notice unless they're trying to write a story about Natalie in residency and/or medical school! Depending where the story started, we could also use the staking in LK as a reason for Nick to have aged. And perhaps excessive feeding by LC to help Nick recover could have caused LC to age? Or they could just do what LC did in AtA when he saw Divia. You know something like "If I didn't know better, Nicholas, I'd think you had aged." That way we could just accept any signs of aging and ignore them. Subject: Nat's internship Yes, the medical education system is the same in Canada as in the U.S. : college, then 4 years of medical school, then internship. While it's true that interns who plan to specialize then do a residency somewhere in the field of specialization, all graduates do a one-year intership in a hospital after graduation from medical school. It doesn't have to be connected with where the residency is done and in fact usually isn't. So Nat could have done her internship in Toronto. To put it another way, a general practitioner doesn't have to do a residency, just an internship. It's like getting a Master's degree. You might go on to a Ph.D. and you might get it at the same university, but you don't have to. At one point in a first season episode Nat's wearing a sweatshirt for, I think, the University of Alberta. It's a university in one of the western provinces, anyway. I always figured that she might be from the province in question or have gone to school there. To me Nat feels more like she comes originally from a small town or city rather than Toronto. Besides, if her family is that far away, it might explain why there was no one at the funeral who insisted on seeing Richard's body before burial. Actually, that's completely different than the way it is in the U.S. today. McLisa is sort of right, because that's the way it used to be done, but that's not how it's done anymore (for M.D.s). Now, after four years of medical school, people go directly into residency. There are no such things as G.P.s anymore. You can't get licensed that way now. *Everyone* has to do a residency in something. However, first year residents are still traditionally referred to as internship. I know this for a fact because I'm currently applying for a residency in Family Practice, (and I know people who are applying to American programs in Pathology who aren't doing an internship either.) However, the Forensic Pathology programs in the U.S. that I looked up seem to be a one-year fellowship, which a doctor would do after completing a residency in Pathology. So, Nat could have done her residency in Pathology in Toronto (assuming there's a pathology program there), done a year of Forensic Pathology somewhere else, then returned to Toronto. Required PreMed in Canada is 3 yrs, but most students will complete the 4th yr and get a Bach of something before applying to Med School - which is unbelievably competive. UBC has a School of Meds, I dunno know if the U of A has one but as McLisa says she could have done PreMed/Undergrad there. I agree that Nat feels like a town/small city person. Did she ever mention where her grandmother was from? Sounded Eastern European to me which would be consistent with the majority of settlers who went to the prairie provinces (Little Nat on the Prairies, LOL). OR By the same token, if Nat moved out to Uni on her own (likely considering her implied relationship with Gram), she would have gone somewhere affordable and Alberta would certainly qualify. :) Rayne. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2000 13:03:08 -0600 From: "Cynthia L.
