But you've got it wrong! It wasn't my idea! Well, okay, the grape
flavoring was my idea. What can I say? I was possessed when I wrote that
EC story. But the whole Thong in General was started by someone else
entirely! Oh but what short memories these listgoers doth possess!
See, now, if I actually ever *go* to a con, I can't just go up to Nigel
Bennett and say, "Well hello Mr Bennett, I'm a great admirer of your work."
Nooo. Because the minute I walk through the doors someone's gonna go,
"Look, it's the thong girl." And that will be the death of any intelligent
conversation!
Hmph!
Well I suppose there are worse things to be infamous for. Like inventing
the hydrogen bomb or Baywatch. I guess I should count my blessings.

cable is out of the question here at home [you know...parents :6]
and madison is *supposed* to continue getting cable, i DON'T know about
scifi exactly, and the company that was supposed to install the cable
pulled out of the deal prematurely. so the madison campus is up in the
air! AUGH! ;)

I called Blockbuster Music, Tower Records, and a local music store. They
all seemed to think they'd have it when it became available. Tower said
the release date had been pushed back. I will continue to call every two
weeks, at least. In other words, yes, it is time for a telephone campaign.
Don't wait for anyone else. Just do it!

I'm here at the office at midnight, print off today's batch of completed
FK surveys & going through FK email, and I had a similar "FK CD in music
stores" idea to pass along:
We were talking about a coordinated effort to contact a targeted company
or market. Though we were talking about letter blitzes & it was nixed
due to adverse reaction of organized FAN (fringe) mailing campaigns),
perhaps we COULD do the following:
For each city/area in which there are a few or more FK fans:
1) Find out who else on list (or off!) lives in your area; find each other.
2) Someone make a list of all the different Music/record stores IN your
immediate area... all branches, too (and phone numbers).
3) Divide the list up amongst yourselves.
4) Someone verify w/Crescendo Records WHEN CDs/tapes are being shipped
out to retail stores.
5) Coordinate a telephone campaign for AFTER shipment has started (when
in June?)
6) Call the stores on your short list & simply ASK (nicely). (Ask to
speak with the person who orders stock, not just the clerk up front.
Be professional in your approach, but be exactly who YOU are!)
--Do they have FK Soundtrack in stock, yet?
--How much is it?
--When they will get it?
--Can it be special ordered?
7) Don't all call on the same day. Spread it out over a week or more,
and at different times.
8) Voice your general request & thank them.
ADVANTAGES:
--Local calls for folks.
--No need to give out your name (but first name is nice when calling).
--No need to commit yourself to special ordering, "just asking..."
--A million people don't all call the same exact store & piss someone off
--The word gets OUT! A buzz starts among the music store staff & they
may reach other off-list folks, try the CD out, PLAY IT ON THE STORE
SYSTEM FOR OTHERS TO HEAR!
DISADVANTAGES:
Please anyone see a hole or bomb in this idea? RSVP on the list, before
anyone seriously trys this. Let's measure twice, cut once!
Well... it might work! Opinions? Flowers & rotten fruit (if ya really have
to...) welcome. (Pls don't aim too closely. I was wearing white today!)
Go for it! (the calls, not the rotten tomatoes!)
p.s. For the person who asked about customers donating customer-purchased
copies of the CDs to radio to achieve airplay: (I've been lightly
associated with the radio industry since 1977, so here's my 2 centavos...)
LET THEM GET THEIR OWN $*^*%^# COPY! Call any radio station which MAY
play a track from the CD & request it. Be a listener calling in a
request. Doesn't have to be a "request line." If the station does not
have the CD, tell them the name of the distributor (Crescendo Records)
so that they can PURCHASE their own. (They may get a promo copy, but
that's between them & Crescendo.. not wise to suggest it.) This is
another telephone campaign which everyone can do individually.
Good radio targets:
--College stations, all kinds
--Public Radio (even if it's classical). They use non-vocal tracks for
background music to segueway from one talking piece to another! Stations
also use non-vocal music as background for public service announcements,
etc. (Remember the Clannad song which VW used for their TV ad campaign
a year ago, or so? More copies of the song sold than cars,
or so I hope!)
--Jazz stations
--Soft rock, beautiful music, pop stations, anything. They may like a
certain track!
--Talk shows and all news/talk stations (background music again)
How's that for starters?

I managed to read through the digests that appeared in my mailbox when I
was out of town this past weekend. (My, aren't we a prolific bunch?) I
noticed that Dorothy (delggren@e.......) posted a nice draft of an integrated
flashback timeline for all three seasons. I've been needing something
like this for quite a while! Just one comment, though. The timeline
said:

I just double-checked the episode, and the flashback in Faithful Followers
was supposed to take place in or near Khartoum. Khartoum is in Sudan, not
in Egypt. Up the Nile River a bit from Egypt. During this time period
the area was probably referred to as "The Sudan." Don't ask me what it
was called in Sudanese Arabic; I have no idea. <g>
Anyone with an old map of northern Africa who can confirm that the area
around Khartoum was called The Sudan in the early 20th century, great.
Unfortunately my antique map of Africa is so old that it refers to this
area as "Nubia," seems to be showing Khartoum as "Halifoon," and doesn't
even show the proper source for the Nile River. <g>
Trivia Of The Day -- Khartoum is the city located at the point where
the White Nile and the Blue Nile meet.

Many thanks, Allison, for "semi-organising" the weekend, the Web page,
countless of the events, and of course, for originating the notion of being

affiliation.
Thank you also for (unknowingly to anybody at the time, mind you :-) ),
participating" in a very wonderful and special event on Saturday night, err
Sunday morning. Bounce, Bounce, Bounce, Bounce!! :-) :-) :-) ("What
does Will mean?" - Answer: "He could tell you, but then he'd have to kill
you - or at the very least, bring you a cross" :-) ).
Many thanks, Lynne, for organising some of the local goings-on, including the
dinner at the Ken Wong Buffet. GOiD only knows the hell and havoc that I
endured, what with trying to reserve a restaurant for 25-100 people. There
wasn't a restaurant around, that _wasn't_ demanding a pre-payment of SEVERAL
THOUSAND DOLLARS in order to reserve that many seats. Greedy little Sons of
Belial, err, I mean, you know. I would have been in a _very_ tight situation
if not for the fact that the Ken Wong people usually give you sufficient
_personal_ trust so as not to demand pre-payment, whew!!!
And needless to say ... you also have _many_ thanks for agreeing to cede your
seat in my car (Waaaah! I miss my "black, subversive Buick Century" - it had
more seating room too, waaaah!) for the Saturday tour. This Thank You also
goes out to Anna "I coinded the term 'Swabbies'" Sawitzky, who also made the
Ultimate Sacrifice :-) in order to give spaces to people who had never before
taken The Tour (tm). THANK YOU AGAIN, LYNNE & ANNA!!!!
Dotti Rhodes: Many, many thanks for providing us with a "party central", and
for managing to do so successfully, what with the microscopic size of the Casa
Loma Inn's rooms! :-)
Rebecca Howle: Thanks for organising the hotel spaces - without this unifying
effort, it would have been more difficult for us to have "gelled" as a "social
unit". To wit, if we'd been _too_ spread out, almost nobody would have ended
up meeting - except at the play itself. This is a large part of why I
appreciated the efforts put forth by you and Dotti especially, to get as many
of us as possible, into one place.
Marg Yamanaka: Thank you so very much for turning a Sunday evening dinner
chat between you, Lynne, and myself, into a cogent map of tour sites. Thank
you also for providing much, much, much information to the out-of-towners, and
thank you _especially_ for taking charge of a large number of tour-goers who
otherwise wouldn't have been able to fit into my car!
Lana G. Soward: Bless you muchly for the name tags. My Shrewthering tag is
now sitting right beside my name tag _The Winter's Tale_, which you also made.
You're quite an accomplished artist!
Ping: Thank you, thank you, thank you, for offering to drive the second car of
our Saturday tour caravan! I also owe you a fairly big note of
congratulations for managing the minor miracle of being able to keep track of
my car on the wild streets of Toronto. Although you had my cell phone number
(I did give it to you, right? :-) ) _in case_ that happened, it was never
needed - whew! Mind you, the Keeper of our Quotes List, was also keeping
track of our traffic violations (tisk, tisk, Lesley!) - mind you, she wasn't
dinging me for "eating yellow lights" (Lynn Messing taught us that term!), but
she _was_ dinging _you_ for following behind me as such Eaten Yellow Lights
were turning red! :-) I'll have to have a chat with her about that... :-)
Still, many of the folks in my car were saying "Thank heavens for Boston
drivers!" :-) :-) :-) :-) Considering what driving in Boston is like (I've
done it, I know! It's INSANE!), those words were definitely more than just an
idle compliment!
Vicky Bratton: Bless you, again, for offering your car for touring purposes.
Although we didn't end up needing it, the offer was greatly appreciated.
Thank you also for assuming the costs of keeping my GasGuzzler (tm) fed on
the Sunday tour. (...less of a GasGuzzler than the Buick, though, thankfully!
:-) )
Lynn Messing: Yum, yum, yum, thank you (and the Saturday tour-goers - I'm
gathering that it was group effort?) for the Russell Stover chocolates!! As
the tours are a group effort, I made sure to keep the chocolate in storage
until the Toronto Contingent could share them at our Post-Shrewthering / Last
Knight party. (We loved those chocolates so much, that we CLONED them for
Lynne Ackerman's impromptu birthday party! How did we clone them? Well,
first it started at a store, then... :-) )
Many congratulations are in order, for managing to successfully bring your
car, which I now dub the Mary Celeste II :-), to Toronto, in spite of
countless automotive problems. Your car should have met my Buick ; they'd
have gotten along famously! :-) Incidentally, the Buick's engine _was_ the
engine on the _original_ Mary Celeste. :-) (...or maybe the Flying Dutchman,
perhaps? :-) )
Last but not least - ever since you shared that little bit of
Philadelphiaspeak with us (ie., "eating" a yellow light) on the Saturday tour,
I have ever since responded to "running" a yellow light, by raising one hand,
opening and closing it several times, and saying, "Chomp, chomp". Aaargh,
what have you done to me?!?!?

I've been reading the advice in the digests to "keep those cards and letters
coming" with respect to the sos-fk effort. I haven't written TPTB for quite
a while, although I sent a zillion letters at the turn of the year, and got
my friends and relative to write, too. I downloaded the latest addresses and
composed a new letter (sending copies of the same letter only to people at
different addresses, hoping that the people in Culver City and the people in
New York don't dump all their FK mail into one central location -- St. Louis?
-- for stylistic comparisons and summary dismissal.) It's really hard to
still be polite, and I know we absolutely have to. There were a couple of
vice presidents on the list to whom I hadn't previously written, so they were
easy, and I choked out a letter to Kay Koplovitz, but then I had to quit. I
wrote so many letters before, and so did my friends, and only our local
syndicated station ever replied at all -- just saying, "Oh, well, it's
cancelled; nothing we can do." It still makes me mad. Guess I'll just go
back to folding cranes for a while.
On a lighter note, I rented "Powwow Highway" starring Gary Farmer. I have no
idea why Blockbust put it in with the comedies, but I really liked it. My
husband said it was better than the last two movies we've rented ("Get
Shorty" and "Babe.")

The wonderful "New International Atlas of the World, War Edition/DeLuxe1945
edition" I have (It's great for Call of Cthulhu games) names the area as
"Anglo Egyptian Sudan", "Khartum" is on the map too. :-) It's as close to
the time in question I can get.

Subject: Black Buddha--questions
I just watched Black Buddha and feel completely confused. The exit of
two characters I had never seen before and the entrance of four new
characters, one of which dies, has left me befuddled.
Can someone explain why Shanke and Cohen were on the plane? And who
was the bomber they were on the plane with that the other guy wanted to
blow up so badly?
Also, I felt like Vachon and the Inca's conversion could have been a whole
story in itself. This vampire/godess chick who burns up in the sun left
me really incredulous. Not to mention, how could she honestly expect two
men who were fighting to their death to become sudden political activists
for peace? Makes no sense to me.
She turns them into killers and then expects them to help create peace. Go
figure.
Also, Mr. Inca seems to be thoroughly pissed at Vachon. Then, outta no
where, he decides to help Nick find bombs(?) and doesn't seem the least
bit angry with Vac. man when he sees him at the end of the story.
Also, how did Vachon "keep up the end of his bargain"?
Nick seems awful joyous in this episode. Lacroix seems to have an optimistic
sense of humor (instead of his sardonic one). And why is Nat wearing all
of these suits? She wears this pink one at nite, which she also wears the
following day. Then she changes into a black one. She's a forenzic
psychologist in a suit?!
Lacroix looks MUCH better without all that clown make-up.
Anyway,explanations will be appreciated. Overall, good episodes, but
I felt the author tried to accomplish too much in a short period of time.
I mean, give us watchers some time to catch up and assilimate the new
people into the story. Don't throw them all at us at once.
Also, why was Tracy down there in the first place? Was she newly assigned
to the precinct?
PS. I tried to set my fkfic sub. to "war", but to no avail. Any help
will be appreciated.
