Because of the spoiler rules (all spoilers for episodes that haven't yet been repeated in syndication go to FKSPOILR and not FORKNI-L), the babysitter would like to request that this type of discussion be taken to the FKSPOILR list. It's just too easy for such musings to wander into the territory of spoilers for the last few episodes. This has happened at least once already and will undoubtedly happen again. You can't really discuss how "Last Knight" affected your perceptions of episodes from, say, the beginning of the third season without talking about what happened in "Last Knight." So... let's all go play this game on the FKSPOILR list, okay kids? :^) And apparently it does bear repeating that *all* discussion of spoiler- protected episodes must take place on FKSPOILR. These episodes are: Games Vampires Play Human Factor Avenging Angel Fallen Idol Jane Doe Francesca Ashes to Ashes Last Knight Anyone who wants a copy of the list rules and doesn't have web access to reach the list rules page, please e-mail me off-list at <percy91@w.......> and I'll forward another copy to you. So I apologize in advance for any apparent harshness. But it pretty effectively ruined my morning to log on to my e-mail and see a favourite actress of precious rare intellectual, emotional and spiritual power getting picked on for her *weight* for pete's sakes! It strikes me as sadly petty, even *before* getting into the issue of whether the criticism is valid, which in my opinion it isn't. Tanya, you are most certainly entitled to both your opinions and your priorities, however opposed to my own they may be. But it is *not* a "fact" that Cathy and/or Natalie is "fat"; by the standards I consider to be healthy, which are every bit as "objectively" supportable as yours, she is no such thing. I see no need to make "excuses"; there is nothing to excuse. I don't always find the "athletic" type you hold up as ideal to be attractive, nor do I think it suits everyone. You deny dealing in "extremes," but I can hardly think otherwise if you're going to label someone 5' 5 1/2" and *maybe* (at a guess) 130 as "fat". I can't tell you not to hold that opinion, but I repeat it is *not* a fact. It is also incorrect to assume that those listmembers who have spoken up to say they happen to think she's gorgeous as is (and, in my case, *more* so than she would be trying to fit a mold that I don't think is natural for her build) are trying to use her to "excuse" their own shortcomings. For the record, I'm 5'9" and 125, and a dancer and occasional model. I fought too long to deprogram myself from the Balanchine ideal I was fed as a baby ballet rat to leave this subject alone. I understand your saying your preference in terms of physical attractiveness would be different. But frankly, the rest of television covers that area just fine. What bothers me, and what I hope was not intentional, was the contempt for others' preferences and priorites that was implied by your posts. "The eye of the beholder" may be hopelessly cliche, but it's also irrevocably true. I am also troubled by the character judgments you seem to be making on the *basis* of physical appearance. I welcome differing opinions. I dislike seeing people I respect personally attacked on the basis of opinions. I thank you for your attention. Please excuse the rambling. Why is it that the ones who used to be heavy are always the ones who are the most down on people about their appearances? I think the a lot of the problem is that American society encourges us to judge people on apperances and not on personality. This translates big time into media. I find it tiring to see underweight, boney poeple on TV and the big screen all the time. This is what I find refreshing about FK. That actors looked like real people, chosen for talent instead of appearances. A very talented group of people, I think. But as usual, SOME people have bought into the appearance thing. I look past that to see Nat. She is more complex than most charaters on a hour long drama(think Spelling) and she is a beautiful, unique woman. And her hair, I want hair like that! Nick ain't perfect. A perfect man is less obtainable for most wonmen. Yet Nick has a very healthy following. Its his smile, the way he looks at a woman(even Nat sometimes) that IMO attracts most of the Knighties, more than his state of physical fitness. Vachon, those eyes that hair, that air of mystery. That is what I see. And LaCroix, Well his not a real buff California guy, but he exudes a strange sensual spell that all the cousins have fallen under. Espically when he does that finger sucking thing. His eyebrows are LC, out of control things. Nigel has nice eyebrows out of FK makeup. But he is considered sexy by A LOT of people on this list. It's his voice, his way of expressing himeself, those beautiful blue eyes, and many other things, that attract us. And he isn't the usual American sexy type. Please don't belittle us by reducing fine actor/esses into little looks compartments. Looks are not everything. Lots of in shape people seem to think it's okay to dump on people becuase they are not a size 8. Weight doen't matter, personality does. Try having a few kids to slow down your matabolism. We larger people are tired of being ragged on and having a perfectly talented actress dumped on over apperances. I have felt the singe of unwarranted jealousy before from people: women who don't even know me. If you don't wish to be picked on, don't pick on others. Tanya, there is never any need to defend one's self unless a personal attack is being made, and I don't recall one single post (prior to yours, anyway) that said anything negative about YOU personally. I also don't recall anyone using the word "bimbo" to describe thin people. If you can show me in a post quote, please do. I would really like to understand. The point is, the comments being made originally about Nat's weight were about NAT'S weight. A character. Some people liked Nat's figure, and said so. They had every right to, it's their personal opinion. If people get upset at you personally now, it's because you made comments about the *actress* rather than the character, and about the *list* members. It is acceptable to disagree with people's opinions; it is not, IMO, acceptable to denegrate people personally and publicly. I thought this list was a family. Now that the series is gone, are we disbanding our ties? I've bragged to all my friends that the quality of the people on this list is amazing. I'd hate to use that adjective in a negative sense, now. Someone's appearance or weight or anything is their own personal business, not open to flame by anyone else, regadless of the been-there-done-that, "I've walked a mile in your shoes" mentality. Let me tell you a story, boys and girls...I have twelve years experience in data processing. I have designed major systems, one of which is in use by an excess of 11,000 brokers every day. Late last year I went on an interview within my company to look at another group. The manager I spoke to asked me some questions, tho most were irrelevant to my experience. The entire time she was staring at the part of my appearance that is, I admit, startling to some people. I am -what is the politically correct term? - physically challenged (tho' I have never felt the label is correct). Her question to an established member of the company community with evidence of successful designs and 12 years of experience was: "How do you manage with only half a hand?" I replied to her: "Obviously better than you do with only half a brain." So I understand what it is like to be visually vivisected. Not at all what an intelligent being should be caught doing. Human nature, you say? Overcome it, I say. A person is like the leaves of a book. Each one singly gives little indication of the depth and value of that person. Only by taking the measure of each and every page as a whole can a person be appreciated and understood. Two cents? Well, maybe more like .50. Take my story for what it's worth. Life is too short to waste it on criticizing others. "To thine own self be true" as Alexander Pope wrote. It is also an Authorized Asst. Listownerly Crosspost. Do Not Try This At Home. Infractions of listrules will henceforth (and retroactively) be handled as follows: First Offense: set to "nopost" Second Offense: set to "nomail" Third Offense: well, figure it out The people who have the authority to determine when and whether and for how long such a "time out" will be imposed are: Our Listowner, Jaye (jap8@c.......) I stayed up far too late and ate far too much and did the Natpack Total Immersion thing; and I had a bitchin' party, and got to be Paramedic #1 (twice!) and Susan and Ann winning the Fan-Q's was a happy happy thing! and Diane had CHOCOLATE, oh what a lovely thing to have people bring you chocolate, and neat badges in the middle of the night, thank you Mo'! and the room was GREEN, and there were people in the halls, and Ribena with cherry brandy, "here, hold this -- be careful, it's red" and hordes of Natpackers in scrubs and labcoats, and hugging everyone at least three times a day, and selling zines! and buying zines! and neat buttons that blink... and I wish every day could be MediaWest, I really do, but right now I need sleep. And a mannerly, well-behaved list. If you would. :-) It's good to be back. (I think...) -- -:-:-:-:- Jamie M.R. <immajer@n.......> -:-:-:-:- Asst.
