Subject: How to Get IRC on AOL (the Short Version)

This is the short version on how to get to the IRC FK channels thru AOL.
This assumes you already have an IRC client you want to use (mIRC is
available thru AOL). For the long version, email me and be patient as
we're beta testing our mail system.

1. Download the AOL winsock.dll (KEYWORD: winsock) and put it in your
Windows directory (usually c:\windows), renaming any existing
winsock.dlls to temp files.

2. Restart windows and logon to AOL.

3. Run your IRC client.

4. Set preferences for Real Name, email ID, and nicknames.

5. Connect to either irc01.irc.aol.com (for Undernet) or
irc02.irc.aol.com (for EFNET). Both are port 6667.

FOR MIRC users only:
If you get the "unable to resolve local host" error, go into the mIRC
setup area. Click on Local Info. There should be a Local Host listed. If
there is no IP address, or if it is 0.0.0.0, then that is the problem.
You can manually enter your IP address. Your IP address can be derived
from the local host name. It would be 152. followed by the numeric
portion of the local host name, repalcing the dashes with dots. So if
the local host is something like:
169-138-54.ipt.aol.com
then your IP address is 152.169.138.54
Then uncheck the boxes for On Connect, Get Local Host and IP address.
Then try connecting again. it should work at this point.

6. Once you have received the Message of the Day (MOTD), enter the
command: /join #foreverknight

7. You should be in!

Er, we AOL users aren't exactly suffering - we have had a weekly Forever
Knight chat in the Remote Control chat room (Keyword: TV GOSSIP) every week
since last September! It's at 11 pm ET, goes until 12 or whenever. We have
had special guests visit the chat in the past, such as Nicholas Gray, Gillian
Horvath, Fred Mollin, and Jon Cassar. Fred will be returning for a visit
sometime in June.

In addition, AOL FKers frequently gather (Sat. nights in particular) in a
private room. The usual rooms are: Gateway Lane and The Raven.

Tonight, I'm inviting all AOL chatters to come to The Raven *after* the
regular chat to really let it all hang out - of course we're chatting about
"Last Knight" and in the private room we can rant and rave all we want!

There also has been a monthly FK chat in The Remote Control on the last
Sunday night of every month at 10 pm ET.

In addition, this week, I'm devoting my bi-weekly Vampire Chat for OMNI
Magazine Online on AOL to "Last Knight" and Forever Knight. That's on
Tuesday, May 21, at 9 -11 pm ET. (Keyword: OMNI > Click on OMNI CHAT >
double click on Enter OMNI Commons)

If you're on AOL, come and chat with us! (BTW, I've been told that the back
door to the IRC from AOL is no longer usable, so if anyone *has* been able to
access it from AOL recently, please let me know!!!!!!)

Why I Watch Forever Knight

I'm attracted to the vampire element a lot - their powers and immortality -
but more than that, I watch Forever Knight for the characters, in particular
Nick. His ability to function in the mortal world with occasional humor and
certainly with the desire to do good - that after 800 years of a
not-so-terrific life (in which he himself has been the cause of so much pain
to others and certainly to himself). I feel for him strongly because of the
pain and guilt he carries, and want so much to help him let all that go so he
can at last come to a certain comfort level in his life. (Okay, so I'm a
Dark Knightie!!)

Also, despite a certain episode that we are not talking about on this list,
the show is about life and living. Life is revered and treasured, and Nick's
regard for human life in the past century is honorable. This is an
underlying element to his psyche that I like - that Nick loves life and
yearns to achieve a goodness in his life. It's even an attribute in LaCroix
that I've come to admire - the zest for living. I admit that the idea of
immortality is attractive - or at least to be able to live a significantly
longer life span. I've been in awe that a show about vampires could be so
strongly about life and goodness. I *love* Forever Knight for that!

Just so you know, I know all too well that Nick has his faults - big, glaring
hairy faults at that - but I tend to overlook the imperfections and focus on
what I see as the larger good in Nick. What can I say? He's adorable and
fascinating and capable of much that I try to bring out in my fiction
writing. He's also beautiful and oh, God, that voice....!

(This is pointed at something which was brought up on fkspoilr. I'm
still on digest over here, so if this has been addressed recently, I
apologize.)

Six years ago, on her birthday -- which we always took to be in June --
Nat had to work. This probably didn't make her very happy, but it changed
her life, because they wheeled in the oddest body for her to examine. She
was told that the man had been killed by an exploding pipe bomb, and that
it wouldn't be so bad, because at least there wasn't much face to look at.
Unzipping the bag, she noticed that the body, and especially the face, was
far more intact than she had been led to believe.

"Not bad. Not bad at all," she commented.

Now, we all know that the body proved to be Nick's, and that, in time,
Nat came to find Nick extremely attractive. However, while you can make
something of her comments if you like, there is no *need* to interpret
them as anything beyond a reaction to finding a whole body in place of
the mangled pieces she'd been expecting.

To get my mind off of the ending of FK, (maybe good for everyone too?)
here are some things that I have been pondering that you can include in
the FAQ and are open for discussion:

1) From LNMTA - during the flashback - Nick and the doctor walk outside and
there is a carriage with horses. The horse rears and bolts, runs over the
opera singer because it sensed Nick is a vampire. Why would Nick scare a
horse but not a dog, ie. Raleigh and Perry? Horses are 'pack' animals as
   well.

2) From SoB - after battling the devil, Nick looks at the cross. Why
isn't he still repulsed by it? I know that Nick dealt with the problem
in FIHS, but he still had a problem with it in the episode about Jack the
Ripper (can't remember the name of the episode).

3) From AFWTD - Nick and Janette are confronting Celeste. Why does
Janette need to put her left hand up to the side of Celeste's head when
she whammie's her and says "Forget"? Nick and LC has never been seen
   doing this.

Well, that's about it for now.

Nope, she definately had *that* look on her face. Yes, she was surprised to
see him intact, but, after the initial surprise, she then said, "Not bad.
Not bad at all." She definately found him physically appealing -- she even
stroked his cheek. Whether or not he was attracked to her when he got up
off that table is another story -- though, he was a bit preoccupied chugging
down a pint of O+.

I joined this list about two week ago. And what a time to join.

I have been overwhelmed by the volume and by the depth of feeling, saddened
by the ending, but left a little hopeful.

You who are experiencing these last (?) shows now have my sympathy, but also
my envy, I'm afraid. Only the first series has been shown here (in Australia).
Would TPTB be even a little moved by interest from here? Maybe I should
write to my local channel, who have already said that there will be no more
FK this year?

Is there anyone out there willing and able to copy PAL system tapes, even
first season, in response to begging and/or bribery?

Did the person who wanted to hear from other Australians get my post?

Oh well, at least there's all that wonderful fan fiction.

Slightly green tinged commiserations.
