Subject: FK article in Cinefantastique

Hi all,

I'm just back from a holiday in London (I'm a german FK-fan) and want
to share the following:

I found an article in the Cinefantastique, May issue (volume 27 Number
9)about FK. That article runs about four pages, seems to be well
investigated, summarizes and compares the three seasons. The author
Lawrence Tetewsky called season three (for good reason) a "pretty
light-weight" one, due to the influence of USA Network. The article ended with:
"Hopefully, Parriott(sp?) will be able to reassert the control so integral to
Forever Knight, and restore the integrity and conflict of the characters if
the series is to continue next year."

The author didn't mention the cancellation and I can hardly understand why?
Maybe the issue was ready for printing long ago (January?). But then, they
should have been able to add the rumors. Or does this means, that the series
will be continued? Maybe the journalist got more information than we did.

I wonder, because the whole magazine, this article included, seems to be a
very carefully investigated one. (My comments: depending on the time that
the article was written, the cancellation wasn't being given out officially
in printed material or the subject was just not mentioned. :dck)

Katrin, from Germany (via Diane, from Canada - a truly international
effort.)

Hi gang,

Allright you guys I still don't get to watch Last Knight for two and
one-half hours yet and I have 16 messages I can't read because they contain
spoilers. This is torture! Is there a twelve step program out there for
FK addiction. I sure need to enroll. We'll probably end up as guests on
the Sally J. Raphael show. Abusive shows and the people who love
them...next week on SJR!

Sorry for ranting---off to pace now.

Late Saturday night thru Sunday morning, we had a wonderful IRC chat
/Last Knight Therapy session for all who were able to join us.
Chana and I kept a running log of most of the session.

I've placed the chat log on my ftp site for all those who may be
interested. This log does contain spoilers. This is also where
Sorcha's Discovery was named (Thanks, Sorcha and Vanguard!, a glimmer
of hope for all those N&NPackers!) The file is about 128K and can
be found at:

URL/ftp ftp://ftp.clark.net/pub/moser/fk/misc/irclog518.txt

I'll link this into my FK Web page shortly.

Big thanks to Mickey and others that set up the Forever Knight
channel on Underground. And for Chana for helping with the logs.
And for everyone that came by and shared, cared, cried, and
laughed with us. Hugs to everyone for helping us make it through
this emotional time.

Vachon would be Lex Luthers son

I don't think warm fuzzies is going to be enough. I think the powers that be
must hate us. I cannot believe they would do this. They certainly wanted to
make certain that FK would not return (as a movie), at least with the
characters we have come to love.

I can't believe that Nick wouldn't be able to stop with Natalie, and that
Lacroix would kill his own son (at least that is how it was made to look).

I am VERY depressed.

Anyone out there? I'll be on-line for another half hour or so. E-mail me

Not meaning any spoilers, I must say that I just saw Last Knight.

I simply don't accept it, so I'm not crying. And even were I to
accept it, there are still so many, many avenues for continuance
into a fourth season, so many "plot loopholes" interwoven into
the tapestry of this episode, that I cannot despair. Rather I
have hope that if we are vocal enough, if we make our wishes
heard, we can yet make Forever Knight truly forever.

Remember [the Alamo] Star Trek! Look what an active, vocal
fandom did for its longevity and continued existence after its
putative "death".

Have hope, fellow fans of Forever Knight.

I'm sorry, I know it's sad, but the way you wrote that post just made

Hi Chana! I remember you from the Wake party last (Saturday) night, I
remember Vanguard, but the other names don't stick.

BTW, about your partial list...

           Nytshadow = Mad_Fax_S = Nightmist.

Yep, all three are me. Never said I was normal... <g> Had lovely
problems with the server after the first nickname change, it kept
dropping me off line and the board kept going "Click!", and I ran
through the list of servers someone graciously posted (Thank You,
whoever it was) before I found one that like me.

Never realized "Mad Fax Spammer" wouldn't fit...

About the screensaver: Hubby DL'd the windows version, it's the same
as described for the Mac version. His opinion: "It looks like they
have a generic screen saver that they can just plug a different logo
into for whatever show they want to have a screen saver for." Blech.

Hi all!

Well, I've finally finished that "Address Book" I told you about not long
ago! It was longer to do that I first thought, but I'm very satisfied with
the results.

If you want to check it out, it's on my Forever Knight page at
http://mtl.net/solidarite/mrhappy/fk.htm. Just go to the Scrapbook section
and click on the link.

I'd like to have comments on this if possible. Also, the page is slightly
"Netscape enhanced", so if you're using another browser (such as AOL's
browser), I'd like to know if the page looks okay.

I hope you'll like what I've done. Thanks a lot to those of you who have
already sent me their entry. Keep 'em coming! Some people told me they
were sending their photo via snail-mail. I'll probably receive some this
week, so keep checking if you want to see them.

Waiting for some comments.

Be vewy vewy quiet. I'm hunting spoilers.

There is a very big difference between discussing the series having ended,
and discussing the ending itself. Hugs and sobs are okay here. SPOILERS
ARE NOT OKAY HERE, NOT EVER.

If you are even slightly in doubt about whether your post contains spoiler
content, POST IT TO FKSPOILR. It's safer that way. <g>

I hate to have to belabor the point at a painful time like this, but it's
very important that we all pay close attention to make sure that we don't
violate the rights of those who've been assiduously avoiding spoilers, only
to find them in a venue where they're not supposed to be...

--I was all ready to assume our fav guy was it, except for the fact that
my TV guide had made such a big deal about Lee Majors' real son (L.M. II)
was in it too (in the credits). He played the shorter, younger, blond

Also, the bad guy, in disguise looked shorter than our guy (& LM II is

This is the URL I use to get to the Sony FK page:
http://www.spe.sony.com/Pictures/tv/forever/forever.html

I hope this is of use to you all.

All I have to say is this; I rarely repeat my self, but in this case I
make an exception. It's not over. It's never over unless we want it to be.
all of these wonderful alternate endings, add-on endings, and such are proof of
that. and moreover, I have given up looking for a fourth season, it's not going
to happen. that doesnt matter any more. If they wrote the fourth season as
they wrote th latter half of 3rd, I wouldn't want it. what I will fight for,
is a movie. there have been talks about a movie deal, and if we put the same
tenacity into it as we did for the other seasons, we stand a good chance. I am
so thankfull for those of you who never said die, and brought us a third
season, I hope you'll keep the dream alive.

>watch FK?

Originally because a friend nagged me until I set my vcr during the first
season. I've always been fascinated by angst-ridden vampires, ever since
the original Dark Shadows. The first episode I ever saw was Only the Lonely.
The next, of course, was Feeding the Beast. The characters were so strongly
drawn and their interactions so fascinating that I got hooked.

>Did you watch it more for the vampire than the cop shop?
>More copshop than vampire?
>Equal time to both?

The vampire only. I would have gotten hooked if Nick hadn't been a
cop. It's not that I don't like cop shows as a genre, but there's no
way I'd have stayed up in the middle of the night and worked in a
zombie-like trance next day for a cop show. (My local station couldn't
be trusted, when FK was on CBS, to show it when it was listed.) I'd
simply have said, hey, nice show, pity it's on at such a bad hour and
left it alone.

>Did you want more flashbacks?
>Less flashbacks?
>Equal time to flashbacks and current day?

I think they had the mix about right in the first season, which was
more or less equal on average. More flashbacks in the second two seasons
were, imho, a mistake. We got flashbacks at times which hadn't much
relevance to the modern story. I think fewer flashbacks might have
worked in the last season, when I often felt that they were thrown in
whether or not the overall story needed them.

More flashbacks, especially in spilling the backstory on Vachon and
Urs at once, seriously lessened both characters for me, because half
the intrigue with Nick, LaCroix and Janette, had been the speculation
on their background. We never had a chance to build up similar mystiques
with Vachon and Urs. I've wondered, incidentally, if this was USA's doing.

>Would you have liked to see historical stories with no current day (or very
>little)?

Maybe as a great rarity, the way we got Curiouser & Curiouser in the 2nd
season. I don't think we would have wanted it as a regular thing. It
would have had too much risk of turning into Interview With the Angsty
Vampire. :)

>Would you have liked non-historical flashbacks (like C&C or STF)?

I wouldn't call those flashbacks, so much as interludes. It depended so
much on the writer and the story. For instance, I hated the flashaways
(if I can call them that) in Dying for Fame in the first season, probably
because I didn't like the episode to begin with. I loved Curiouser &
Curiouser and I liked the Rashomon segments in STF. Otoh, the spirit
plane in Blackwing just didn't interest me. If anything, I thought they
held up the modern story.

So I suppose the answer to the question is, sometimes, but not as a
common thing.

>Did you watch for one character in particular and which one?

No. Like most of us, I had favorites, but I can't say I was watching
for anyone in particular. There were a couple which almost drove me
to *not* watching. :)

I just wanted to thank everyone for the virtual hugs that were sent to me.
I feel much better now. They were all very comforting.

I will be in NY for Memorial Day weekend. can some kind soul tell me where
and when FK would air. The last time I was home it was still on CBS. I
think I am a little behind the times.

FK pondering: Our favorite vamps have chosen Toronto as their latest home.
If they were going to move, where would they go next and what would they
do?

Subject: a short interview with me

I was going to print the following in my magazine but thought you all might
be piqued by it too.

 Welcome to Hollywood, fans

A friend of mine who is not interested in Forever Knight asked me to explain
the history of the show. I will paraphrase some of the questions and answers
in the form of an interview.

SO WHY DID IT GET CANCELLED?
It got cancelled because, (pause) remember the Mel Brooks film "The
Producers" where the idea was that the producers of a play figured out a way
to make money off of a flop, but to their horror "Springtime for Hitler" is a
success? This is it. Tri-Star, Sony, and USA Network made more money on the
show failing than it succeeding.
AND THE FANS LOSE?
Yep. Ultimately to them, we are only numbers and they didn't like the
numbers.
SO WHY BOTHER WITH A WRITING CAMPAIGN ETC?
Because the fans care. From the beginning I had a sense that TPTB (the powers
that be) never had any energy behind the show. "Is it a cop who's a vampire,
a vampire who's a cop? What?" they didn't understand it so they didn't know
how to market it, or relate to it. The people actually involved in the making
knew it was something but they only had so much influence. The Producer, as
much as he cared, I think, never had the clout to endorse it.
BUT IT ENDED UP BEING A FAILURE DIDN'T ?
No I don't think so. As a result of the saga of Forever Knight, the average
fan/viewer, I mean the ones who followed the story on the internet for
example, got a valuable lesson about the the world of TV. Hollywood is
sleazy.
THAT'S PRETTY CYNICAL
Yes it is, but essential to understanding the way the business works.
Everyone lies, cheats, and deals behind their backs, and that ok- in the
business. What fails is when that mentally is used to deal with the public.
The fans see it as betrayal and insensitivity. Whether it's pro baseball, or
the stock market or police work the perception used in whatever field is
shocking to the unintiated and totally different from what they expect.
Surprise!
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO BRING IT BACK?
Near impossible feat but I would do this: Clout is what's missing here. I'd
find someone who had the power and say
" Check it out, this is something and can make money". But TV is masochistic
by nature.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
If it's a formula, meaning simple to grasp, then produce it. Sometimes it's
hit sometimes not. No one knows how success works. If it's original or
innovative, which the critics and supposedly the public want, then make sure
it fails. The business is one part money grubbing, one part ego. Innovation
is the enemy to both because it involves the unknown. A no-no among
accountants.
FRASIER IS ORIGINAL, AND NYPD BLUE WHICH YOU LOVE, AND THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL.
No they aren't original . they are new spins on old formulas. The only reason
FK made it to TV in the first place was the cop show formula part of it.
Beyond that...the unknown factor again.

How does this sound? Feedback welcome, criticism will be cheerfully ignored.
