To: dkennedy@f....... Subject: FK article in Cinefantastique Hi all, I'm just back from a holiday in London (I'm a german FK-fan) and want to share the following: I found an article in the Cinefantastique, May issue (volume 27 Number 9)about FK. That article runs about four pages, seems to be well investigated, summarizes and compares the three seasons. The author Lawrence Tetewsky called season three (for good reason) a "pretty light-weight" one, due to the influence of USA Network. The article ended with: "Hopefully, Parriott(sp?) will be able to reassert the control so integral to Forever Knight, and restore the integrity and conflict of the characters if the series is to continue next year." The author didn't mention the cancellation and I can hardly understand why? Maybe the issue was ready for printing long ago (January?). But then, they should have been able to add the rumors. Or does this means, that the series will be continued? Maybe the journalist got more information than we did. I wonder, because the whole magazine, this article included, seems to be a very carefully investigated one. (My comments: depending on the time that the article was written, the cancellation wasn't being given out officially in printed material or the subject was just not mentioned. :dck) Katrin, from Germany (via Diane, from Canada - a truly international effort.) dkennedy@f....... ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 19 May 1996 20:35:06 -2055 From: "L. They certainly wanted to make certain that FK would not return (as a movie), at least with the characters we have come to love. And even were I to accept it, there are still so many, many avenues for continuance into a fourth season, so many "plot loopholes" interwoven into the tapestry of this episode, that I cannot despair. Rather I have hope that if we are vocal enough, if we make our wishes heard, we can yet make Forever Knight truly forever. Remember [the Alamo] Star Trek! So why did you >watch FK? Originally because a friend nagged me until I set my vcr during the first season. I've always been fascinated by angst-ridden vampires, ever since the original Dark Shadows. The first episode I ever saw was Only the Lonely. The next, of course, was Feeding the Beast. The characters were so strongly drawn and their interactions so fascinating that I got hooked. >Did you watch it more for the vampire than the cop shop? >More copshop than vampire? >Equal time to both? The vampire only. I would have gotten hooked if Nick hadn't been a cop. It's not that I don't like cop shows as a genre, but there's no way I'd have stayed up in the middle of the night and worked in a zombie-like trance next day for a cop show. (My local station couldn't be trusted, when FK was on CBS, to show it when it was listed.) I'd simply have said, hey, nice show, pity it's on at such a bad hour and left it alone. >Did you want more flashbacks? >Less flashbacks? >Equal time to flashbacks and current day? I think they had the mix about right in the first season, which was more or less equal on average. More flashbacks in the second two seasons were, imho, a mistake. We got flashbacks at times which hadn't much relevance to the modern story. I think fewer flashbacks might have worked in the last season, when I often felt that they were thrown in whether or not the overall story needed them. More flashbacks, especially in spilling the backstory on Vachon and Urs at once, seriously lessened both characters for me, because half the intrigue with Nick, LaCroix and Janette, had been the speculation on their background. We never had a chance to build up similar mystiques with Vachon and Urs. I've wondered, incidentally, if this was USA's doing. >Would you have liked to see historical stories with no current day (or very >little)? Maybe as a great rarity, the way we got Curiouser & Curiouser in the 2nd season. I don't think we would have wanted it as a regular thing. It would have had too much risk of turning into Interview With the Angsty Vampire. :) >Would you have liked non-historical flashbacks (like C&C or STF)? I wouldn't call those flashbacks, so much as interludes. It depended so much on the writer and the story. For instance, I hated the flashaways (if I can call them that) in Dying for Fame in the first season, probably because I didn't like the episode to begin with. I loved Curiouser & Curiouser and I liked the Rashomon segments in STF. Otoh, the spirit plane in Blackwing just didn't interest me. If anything, I thought they held up the modern story. So I suppose the answer to the question is, sometimes, but not as a common thing. >Did you watch for one character in particular and which one? No. Like most of us, I had favorites, but I can't say I was watching for anyone in particular. There were a couple which almost drove me to *not* watching. :) Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." Welcome to Hollywood, fans A friend of mine who is not interested in Forever Knight asked me to explain the history of the show. I will paraphrase some of the questions and answers in the form of an interview. SO WHY DID IT GET CANCELLED? It got cancelled because, (pause) remember the Mel Brooks film "The Producers" where the idea was that the producers of a play figured out a way to make money off of a flop, but to their horror "Springtime for Hitler" is a success? This is it. Tri-Star, Sony, and USA Network made more money on the show failing than it succeeding. AND THE FANS LOSE? Yep. Ultimately to them, we are only numbers and they didn't like the numbers. SO WHY BOTHER WITH A WRITING CAMPAIGN ETC? Because the fans care. From the beginning I had a sense that TPTB (the powers that be) never had any energy behind the show. "Is it a cop who's a vampire, a vampire who's a cop? What?" they didn't understand it so they didn't know how to market it, or relate to it. The people actually involved in the making knew it was something but they only had so much influence. The Producer, as much as he cared, I think, never had the clout to endorse it. BUT IT ENDED UP BEING A FAILURE DIDN'T ? No I don't think so. As a result of the saga of Forever Knight, the average fan/viewer, I mean the ones who followed the story on the internet for example, got a valuable lesson about the the world of TV. Hollywood is sleazy. THAT'S PRETTY CYNICAL Yes it is, but essential to understanding the way the business works. Everyone lies, cheats, and deals behind their backs, and that ok- in the business. What fails is when that mentally is used to deal with the public. The fans see it as betrayal and insensitivity. Whether it's pro baseball, or the stock market or police work the perception used in whatever field is shocking to the unintiated and totally different from what they expect. Surprise! WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO BRING IT BACK? Near impossible feat but I would do this: Clout is what's missing here. I'd find someone who had the power and say " Check it out, this is something and can make money". But TV is masochistic by nature. WHAT DO YOU MEAN? If it's a formula, meaning simple to grasp, then produce it. Sometimes it's hit sometimes not. No one knows how success works. If it's original or innovative, which the critics and supposedly the public want, then make sure it fails. The business is one part money grubbing, one part ego. Innovation is the enemy to both because it involves the unknown. A no-no among accountants. FRASIER IS ORIGINAL, AND NYPD BLUE WHICH YOU LOVE, AND THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL. No they aren't original . they are new spins on old formulas. The only reason FK made it to TV in the first place was the cop show formula part of it. Beyond that...the unknown factor again. How does this sound? Feedback welcome, criticism will be cheerfully ignored. AMc Iremi@a....... =========================================================================
