There's been a distressing tendency toward cross-posting lately... This is not a good thing. The reason we have three lists is because each of them exists for a specific purpose: FKFIC for fiction, FKSPOILR for spoilers, FORKNI for everything else. These are fairly distinct categories; there should be no overlap. Cross-posting is almost always unnecessary, and wastes bandwidth for people who pay by-the-word/line/minute to get their e-mail. It's like the emergency broadcast system: it should be saved for the most extreme circumstances. NOBODY should be posting the same message to more than one list, unless they've cleared it with a listowner in *advance*. Hi everyone! Regarding the question of whether or not Janette can read, I think it might have been possible. In the second season episode where Janette has a flashback (was it "A Fate Worse Than Death?), I think it was mentioned that Janette was "of noble blood" and that her husband sold her to the brothel because she did not produce the son that he wanted. If her family was of minor nobility, like the deBrabants (although she lived 200 years earlier), then she may have learned to read. However, I have one question. That episode mentioned that if Janette had been able to have a child, "she'd be living in England." Why would she be living in England if she was French? If she married foreign nobility, that would imply that she was of greater importance and lineage than lesser nobility. Any comments? To get Nick and LC to make up, she deposits the guilt in LC, who suddenly feels just awful for the way he's treated his son. Nat has a good, long talk with Janette, and realizes that Nick is just too immature for her; Janette only gets by because he's her outlet for her suppressed maternal instincts. Nat doesn't want Nick anymore, so she and LC get on just fine. Reese conquers the water-cooler; Tracy turns the Raven into the Bluebird; Vachon goes to the Academy... There doesn't seem to be a single bookshelf in Nick's loft - TV, videos, computers, yes, but no books, not even a stack of unreturned library books! Come to think of it, I can't even recall seeing Nick read a newspaper or a magazine. Reading also tends to be a lifelong passion - readers may change the *type* of material they read, but never *stop* reading... Re: Nick's education. I read somewhere that in the Middle Ages girls were often educated more than their brothers (after all, reading was NOT a valuable skill unless you were intended for the church), so it is possible that Fleur was better educated than Nick. This would be especially true if she had been educated in a convent, or her family had ever considered dedicating her to a nunnery. Nick's knightly training, on the other hand, would have begun at the age of seven, been highly intensive, and not left much time for learning irrelevant things such as literacy skills. He might have been taught to read in the vernacular, but he probably wouldn't have learnt much beyond that. I'll check out my books on medieval women on the weekend. Because I first saw FK *after* the head injury, not all of it 'took', so to speak -- I've seen all the episodes; I just don't remember 'em. (Forever Who?) We had the traditional "lovers" triangle of Nick, Nat and Janette. We had the flashback vampires triangle of Nick, LaCroix and Janette. We had the law-enforcement partners triangle of Nick, Nat and Schanke. We had the opposing-goals -for-Nick's-life triangle of Nick, Nat and LaCroix. We even had the different-ideas-of-good-police- procedure triangle of Nick, Schanke and Cohen/ Stonetree. These triangular character relationships make it easier to write interesting stories about Nick, since he appears in all of them. In the third season, all those triangles have disappeared except the Nick, Nat and LaCroix triangle. You can kind of put together a Nick, Vachon and LaCroix "boy vampires" triangle, but we only see it used once, in MBIAV. Any triangle with Tracy in it (Nick-Tracy-Vachon?) seems to have Tracy as the focus. This year's best episodes (NIQ especially) seem to use the old Nick-Nat- LaCroix triangle left over from the two earlier seasons. This season's relationships seem to be based on parallels: Nick-Nat//Vachon-Tracy, Nick-LaCroix//Tracy-Daddy, Vachon-Urs//LaCroix-Nick. They're not as nifty as the interlocking triangles were, and they seem to make it harder to write interesting stories about the main character. I don't know how hard it would be to re-write the relation- ships between the characters to interlock differently, but it might make any possible fourth season easier to write for if they did. On a completely different note, the "Universe Next Door" fiction challenge story I never finished had Sailor Tracy and the Moonlight Knight vs. the evil forces of the Neg-LaCroix. LMPayne@a....... At the risk of firing the canon, what about acid or general strong chemicals? Two other major types of burns are on here (sun, fire). Technically, a good acid or alkaline makes the flesh dissolve into a puddley mess. If this completely engulfed a vampyre, would it kill him/her? I'm assuming Natalie had something to do with it, but I could be wrong (yea, it's happened once or twice). =) Thanks -- Steve Townsley stownsley@a....... First of all, you're assuming that the writer's spent as much time researching or are as smart as you guys are (not a chance) and knew the things that you guys do. Obviously they didn't, or they just assumed no one would pay enough attention to look further into it. See , you guys are just too smart - you're the bane of tv's existence. TV execs, etc. write for the great unwashed most of the time and don't expect the level of intelligence that is on this list. There you go girls!!!!
