Here's my $.02 on this Kindred business...

(Disclaimer: I'm not a Listowner, though I did once volunteer for the list
janitor job...)

I completely support Jamie's ban on discussion of The Kindred. This _is_ a
list for Forever Knight, not a discussion group on why The Kindred is such a
miserable rip-off of Forever Knight (I haven't even seen The Kindred, but from
what I've heard, the plaigarism _is_ obscene)

Furthermore, Jean very likely pays money from her own pocket to keep these
lists going, and talking about another show not only needlessly increases the
volume of the lists (_and_ the strain on her pocketbook, not to mention the
tension level of the bigwigs at PSUVM), but subverts the original purpose of
these lists. This might be "our" list to use, but it's not ours to rule,
nor is it a democracy - so let's respect the wishes of our landlords - please.

Cheers,
Cousin Will

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa. I do think that Nick's character and motives are
exceptional considering his vampiric drives and he is by far my favorite
character. I engaged in this discussion for purely devilish reasons,

After reading Dotti's interesting post, I wanted to make some comments.
First season for me has always been the *best* season for several
reasons. First and formost (and what has been missing in subsequent
seasons) is the "mythic" quality, the "bigness" of the stories.
The story is about Nick's struggle not just to be mortal again, but
to be "good" instead of "evil". LC was a representation of what Nick
could become if he chose the "evil" side. Then we had Nat and Janette
representing opposing "lures" for Nick: Nat to his hopes for the
future, Janette for the past and vampirism. Janette was always (to
me) the representative of what Nick found pleasant in his past as a
vampire, and the show, I think, definitely suffers with her loss.
In addition, bringing LC back to "life" for second season turned
Nick's quest from "I want to escape from evil." into "I want to escape
from my Dad." LC and Nick were both weakened as characters with
LC's return: LC couldn't be shown to be as cruel and Nick was made
to "live with him" rather than "triumph" over him. I hope part of
the reason (and this is not meant to offend any Cousins) that LC was
not used as much in third season as second season was because TPTB
realized the damage they were doing to the show by focusing on LC so
much.

There is still much to enjoy in the second and third seasons, but
I miss the "mythic" qualities of first season sometimes. It was
more a struggle of the *soul* then, and a soul on a delicate
balance (in the earlier eps, you weren't always sure Nick would
stay a "good guy"). I wish that it was first season that SFC was
starting with since I think the show would garner more new fans if
they started at the beginning.

Is this Forever Knight canon? We've certainly seen LaCroix kill a number of
times. When Schanke asks Janette, "What do you do when you get tired of
someone, she says, "In my case, usually homocide." There's also a scene where
Vachon says to Nick, "Remember how simple it was in the old days? If you
wanted a woman, you could just take her." LaCroix chimes in, "It still can be,
if we are true to our natures. Operate discreetly."

Well, other than Tracy having met up with a vampire, I have never
thought she was that much like Nat. I think it was deliberate that
she be more like Nick. But TPTB haven't done much along the lines
of what I wanted to see them do with Tracy and Nick--explore their
similarities.

Schanke provided contrast to Nick, that's true. And that was
interesting and I do miss Schanke. But Nick found it harder to really
relate to Schanke because Schanke's life and outlook on it was so very
different. There had to be a certain element of envy on Nick's part
for all the *mortal* things Schanke had that Nick would like to
experience (love, family, children, *food* :) ). It added to the
pathos of Nick's existence to relate to Schanke.

OTOH, as you mentioned, Tracy is similar to Nick in some respects.
I personally think that it would help Nick to become closer to Tracy
and to understand that things he has consider the banes of his
vampire life (a controlling father, "differentness" enforced by
who you are, etc.) can be factors in a *mortal* life that some
*mortals* have to deal with as well. It could act to make Nick feel
more connected to humanity to have him see more of his own life in
Tracy. Nick and Tracy had the potential to become a "family" of
their own, but with only four remaining eps, I doubt we'll see this
potential relationship developed unless we get FK movies or
something and even then...

To some extent, Nat has made Nick see that he can be human. But Nat
knows Nick's a vampire so on some level, he may consider her motives
suspect. Tracy thinks Nick is a human, so he could be assured that
her problems and reactions are expressed as human to human.

Just some thoughts. :)

Hi all.

Why didn't anyone tell me that Dracula: The Series was on? You know the one
with GWD. My dad found it on the Sci-Fi channel (yes I get the SF) today while
I was at work. He was surfing the channels and saw GWD and said ( get this)
...
"I saw that guy that plays that, .......you know the vampire cop, what his
name.
Nick?" I cringed when he said that. Anyway he taped about the last fifteen
minutes. Now Ive seen Ger in ofcorse Forever Knight, Airwolf, and an episod of
Matrax (sp?) and now Dracula.
The first time I see him its night he is dressed in black and wearing shades
and his hair is cut short and slicked back. I'm sorry I snickered. Actually
I whent into a laughing fit. I looked in the TV guide but couln't find it on
again. Does any one know if and or when it will be on again?
ObFK....... Umm, well lets see, in Dracula: the series I noticed, Okay dad
noticed that the older the vampire the longer the fangs. Is that where the
saying "A littler long in the tooth" comes from? Anyway what I wanted to ask
is
there anything like that on FK. I mean is there any physical differences as
vampires get older. I've only seen the thrid season, so I haven't seen any,
but
I thought I saw someone say that Enforcers also had inlarged fangs. Is this
right?

Katherine writes:
>I haven't seen any of the earlier episodes so I didn't realize that
>most of the Toronto vamp contigent aren't eating people...BTW - what
>exactly is the goal of the enforcers and who decides who they are?

First, I don't think it's that definte that the Toronto vamps aren't
eating people. I think in this day and age that disguising a vampire
kill or disposing of a body in such a way that it won't easily be
found is a more necessary practice. It is also possible that blood
is obtained in other ways (blood banks, live "donations" without the
person "donating" being killed, human "farms" for all we know). Some
other vampires besides Nick may feed on animal blood too for all we
know.

However, we *have* seen people killed in the present day. In the
first premeire two-parter, LC kills a museum guard (unnecessarily,
imo) when he goes to steal a Mayan cup that legend says can be (paired
with a second one) used to escape vampirism. Vampire Jack the Ripper
comes to town in Bad Blood and kills people (but rips them apart too,
so sort of disguises their deaths). Jack is killed in the end.
LC killed a man pretending to be a vampire in second season's
Stranger Than Fiction, and killed a man after he "returned to life"
in the last episode of first season, Love You to Death. LC has
brought over a couple of people in the present day also (which I
would think involves blood draining). When there was a panic that
an asteroid was going to hit the earth in A More Permanent Hell
(second season) some of the city's vampires went out and killed
people. There may be other examples I've forgotten, but the facts
are that there *are* still some kills by vampires going on in the
present day. Nat usually tries to cover up for them when she sees
evidence of vampire killings.

We were never told how Enforcers are picked and we've only seen them
in one episode (first season's Unreality TV), although they have been
referred to in a couple other episodes. But even LC seems to accord
them some deference and respect. Basically, their job is to protect
vampires from *verifiable* discovery by mortals. In Unreality TV,
LC was photographed attacking a fallen soldier in a Civil War
battlefield; in the present, a news reporter captured Nick *flying*
to catch a criminal. In both case, such "proof" that vampires exist
makes each mortal unhypnotizable. In the past, the Enforcers killed
the photographer and wanted to kill Nick (he had been *wrongly* given
the responsibility by LC to see that the matter was taken care of and
had tried to hypnotize the man to preserve his life, but to no avail)
but LC stepped forward and admitted that the fault was his. They
also destroyed the evidence. In the present, they came after the
reporter and Nick saves her by having her turn over her videotaped
proof to them and then hypnotizing her (once the proof was gone, he
was able to do so) into forgetting what she had seen (although there
is speculation that the hypnotism didn't last, but if so, she realized
her good fortune depended on her silence). The Enforcers resembled
"hit men". They were able to communicate with each other without
speaking (and apparently LC could also understand their telepathy).
It is apparently only people who want to expose vampires "publicly"
who are hunted by them and even then, it is normally the vampire who
allowed himself or herself to be "verifiably identified" as a vampire
who is supposed to take care of the problem. If the vampire doesn't
do it, the Enforcers can show up to punish both mortal and vampire
with death. Some people have wondered why Nat hasn't been a targer,
but it's because she hasn't tried to go public with any of the "proof"
she might have acquired in helping Nick. Some people also speculate
that if Nat cured Nick, the Enforcers would not be happy with that
either but I'm not as sure that would be so. I think it would depend
on whether Nat and Nick made his cure public knowledge (and I don't
see Nick wanting to do that. He may want to be mortal himself, but
he doesn't seem to want to impose his viewpoint on any other vampires.).

The guard in Dark Knight was killed by LaCroix in an attempt to get at Nick
so that doesn't really count. Also, during A More Permanent Hell everyone
was acting stupid, so the vamps were sort of cleaning house - not a normal
situation either.

That's possible - but I also think the community knows about Nick and Nat
and know the problems it could cause to the entire community and from what I
understand about the community no one does anything to jeopardize the

Nicholas Knight is many things, imo. A wimp isn't one of them. To
attempt to justify oneself, or to defend oneself, implies an insecurity
in one's own philosophy or position on the subject. It is only when one
knows that he is right when one may ignore the opinions of others, no
matter what the personal cost. An admirable trait, imo.

Well, masochism is by definition to harm oneself, and therefore to have
someone else do your hurting for you would be poor form, indeed. But
masochism by no means is indicative of a submissive personality.
Masochism can be used to make yourself stronger and more independent from
others by curing yourself of dependencies that others may use against you
(in Nick's case, the most obvious is blood, for example).

> deserve. LaCroix truly is Nickolas' cross to bear.

To a true masochist, Nick would be his own cross to bear. But Lacroix
does such a good job, Nick really doesn't have to go through the trouble,
does he? Apathy, while not always an admirable trait, is most certainly
a common one, at least...

My feelings exactly!!!

I'm not sure LaCroix's appearance in the second season reduced Nick's
conflict as much as it had it sitting right in his face all the time, adding
to the pressure of worrying about the mortals he cared about (Nat & Schanke)
always with the feeling that LC had destroyed those he cared for before and
wondering when he'd do it again, but trying so hard to ignore it and
continue on. However, I do believe season three completely reduced it to LC
being just a little annoyance every now and then. However it did work in one
way - making Nick realize that he could not totally shut out that part of
his life, that he did need LC in some ways since with Janette gone he was
the only one that could truly understand Nick (whether he wanted to or not).

Oh, yea that great line from Janette to Schanke!! NO, I don't really think
it's carved in stone, I did hear a couple of lines regarding it, which gave
the idea that in this day and age it was necessary to particularly safe for
vampires to hunt and kill, and since it was done primarily for survival and
they are able to survive on bottled blood from Janette's, why risk it.
That's not to say that there aren't a few who would like to get it hot from
the tap every now and then (actually I would suspect LC would do it but he
seems to be content with his little glass of numnums). I merely wanted to
point out the different in what Richard was doing be behaving like a
homicidal maniac and the fact the general community of vamps don't behave
that way anymore because they don't have to and that was why Richard had to
be staked.

Sandra wrote a really cool bend on the Nick/Tracy relationship that just
boggled my mind. I never considered that, if written correctly, she could
have been someone who Nick could have seen as so much like him in
human-form. That really makes her character a total waste of potential.
There really could have been so much more there - fanfic possibilities here!!
Wish I could write, drat, drat, drat!!

I mean is there any physical differences as vampires get older. I've only
seen the thrid season, so I haven't seen any, but I thought I saw someone
say that Enforcers also had inlarged fangs. Is this right?
>
The Enforcers in Unreality TV in the first season were really tall and had
really big funny looking fangs and all they did was growl, grunt and kill.
(I found myself yelling "Fetch boy, fetch!!) However, there was no
explanation as to why they were Enforcers such as extreme age or knowledge
or whatever. And no, older vamps (and LaCroix appears to be just about the
oldest) don't have any physical differences other than extreme power.

For anyone who has any questions about the area, I live in Thousand Oaks,

will not be attending the Gerthering, unfortunately, but I will be living
here still during that time, as long as my school lets me!

Hi Dotti <wavin' to ya>

In the last show of the first season, LYTD, LaCroix drains someone in the
alley behind Nick's loft and looks up at the window <insert a scary music
vinette here>. There was no other reason for doing so other than to feed that
we are aware of. LaCroix kills the human who thinks he's a vampire in STF and
urges Nick to kill Emily Weiss. LaCroix kills the killer in DK and tries to
kill Dr. Hunter (or bring her across, although there could be an argument
made that Nick brought Dr. Hunter across). In FIHS Schanke very nearly bites
the dust at the hands of Alma in the backroom of the Raven and is saved by
Janette.

You get the picture. As far a cannon is concerned. Modern day vamps in
Toronto very definitely do kill. They have to be mindful of the code. But
they do kill.

BTW, I didn't add the Barber in Bad Blood to the list above, even though he
is a vamp, because he WAS a homicidal maniac. As a matter of fact, I think
his picturemust accompany the definition of the term in the dictionary.

Okay, I'm going....

Okay - fine - just tie me to a chair and wrap tape over my mouth!! (VBG).
Okay, okay, okay - there are several instances where vamps do get a little -
er - shall we say, thirsty for the real thing. I'm just saying they don't do
it for feeding as a rule anymore. There's always someone messing around in
any community - so why not vamps. Toronto would sure be quiet if they all
started doing it again. Awful lot of vamps in Toronto.

My husband brought up something that I think has probably been brought up
before, but as I said we've been reqwatching the first season lately and
things pop up again. Anyone noticed how many unstable women live in Toronto?
For every unstable guy Nick's gone after, there must be 3-5 wacko ladies.
Does it have something to do with the air quality??

You HAD to come up with that, didn't you? :) Great, now not only do I have
a soft spot for Mounties (via a Canadian bf), now I have to put up with the
image of Nigel as one, too. Then again, I can think of much worse fates...

For some reason, I'm now getting fanfic.

strike you in different ways)

Lacroix:(in whiny chiauhua voice) Nick, you eedoit! I had to come bail you
out when you tried to steal blood from Farmer Boogergarter.

Nick: But Lacroix. I did it for you. thought you wanted blood, so I
was just trying to help out. (starts to cry big bloody kitty tears.)

Lacroix: (awkwardly patting Nick on the back) Don't cry now.

Nick: But I just wanted to help.

Lacroix: Stop crying, and I'll get you some Happy Kitty Absorbant Coffin
liners.

Nick: Really? (Immediately stops crying and whiskers perk up) Happy,
happy, joy, joy!
