IMO, there was a moderate decline in quality between the first and second seasons, and a precipitous decline between seasons two and three. The show has been dumbed down and coarsened to the point where I no longer watch it faithfully, tape it regularly, or recommend it to my friends. I haven't found it in my heart to write letters of support, but I *have* contributed to three funds. If the outlook is hopeful after NATPE, I am planning to flyer a large con I will be attending in February. I want to carry on because it isn't clear to me how much of the decline in the show (to a large extent a decline in the writing, which was always uneven) is the responsibility of the folks at Paragon and how much resulted from outside circumstances. JP said that they got off to a rocky start second season because of inadequate lead time and too long a production hiatus. A lot of what I don't like about season 3 seems to be a result of budget constraints and USA's meddling. Given the enthusiasm of the syndicated stations for the show, the growing audience, the fact that fantasy TV shows are hot right now, and the amazing activity by the members of this list, we have reason to be hopeful. I think it is possible that we could help Paragon find an additional source of production money, one that will spend what is necessary and appreciates the values of classic (first season) Forever Knight. I don't blame James Parriott for doubting that we can do this, because it has never been done before. Nevertheless, it is possible. We have to accept that even with adequate funding and creative control, the fourth season is going to be different from seasons one and two because of turnover in the cast and perhaps in the crew. Fred Mollin seems to be eager to carry on. If someone made Deborah Duchene a decent offer, she would probably return. But John Kapelos isn't coming back, and Ger looks like he is getting ready to leave, or at least not be a regular. If Ger is out, there will be very little for Catherine Disher to do, and we would have to expect her to be a recurring character at most rather than a regular. I haven't the slightest idea what Nigel Bennett's plans are. Can you imagine a Forever Knight with the original cast appearing only occasionally, perhaps in flashbacks, and an entirely new set of principals? Can you imagine Forever Knight without the knight? I can. To me, the show is not about Nick's angst or his star-crossed romance with Natalie. It is about the condition of being an immortal predator passing for human. There are a lot of stories about that that haven't been told yet. If Jim Parriott can imagine them, I want to watch them. Deborah Bender dbendr@a....... It sounded pretty discouraging. :(= She said that she had heard that it was not going to be renewed for a fourth(Which, again, is nothing we already didn't know), and that even *they* didn't know what was going on, exactly. Sorry this has taken so long to make it to the list but it took three days for me to recover from last week. (I missed two days sleep.) The Saturday party was great. There was a dozen of us. Drinking blood from wine bottles labeled with Raven, Private Reserve, 1996 with the Name of the FK fan at the bottom. Mine had, of course, Cousin Cherri written on it. We had FK episodes on from the time the first person arrived, Hi Debbie, to the time people left at 2:45am. IE more than 12 hours of FK. Thanks to all who brought snacks. Follows is the very short quote list. Next time, someone else should be in charge of the list. I became a member of this list about five months ago and it immediately became my favorite place to read about Forever Knight. But my appreciation of this group have increased ten-fold since the news of Forever Knight's cancellation. I've never been a part of such an effort as this. Its amazing how quickly everything was mobilized and how organized this movement has been. Think about it. Its been one month since news of the cancellation and there have been *thousands* of letters, faxes, and telegrams sent; *thousands* of dollars raised for the Pediatric Aids Foundations; and hundreds of contacts made to newspapers, magazines, TV stations, newsgroups, conventions, and web sites. Listen. Whether we succeed in our goal or not, we are doing something positive that we believe in. How often have you watched a show on television that delighted, amused, or moved you in some way only to have it canceled cause it wasn't mainstream enough? (a.k.a. low ratings). Forever Knight is a show that is more than the sum of its parts. No, it won't stop wars, cure cancer, or get you an A+ in political science. Its just a good TV show that makes you think about such lightweight stuff as redemption, unrequited love, death, guilt, and forgiveness. So DONT GIVE UP! What we are doing is positive and quite cool and whatever the result - at the very least - we can say that we did our best on behave of something we believe in. And you always benefit from that. ---TSD(Forever Knightie) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 18:55:58 -0500 From: Lisa Anne Prince <Moonlight@g.......> Subject: Re: Questions Hey, Hey Guys :) I have to agree with Cynthia, Jamie, Jane, et. al about our sticking with this campaign. We're way too far along to just quit and I for one don't think we should unless someone from the show tells us to stop because it's hurting them. There have been ample opportunities for several different people involved in the show to tell us right out to stop -- none of them have done so. Even if the show does end now, think about all the good we've done. Not just for PAF, Red Cross and such, but for each other. We've truly banded together as a group to try to affect a change for something we care about. People who've never done something like this before, are out there trying. A lot of people have put their heart and soul into helping this campaign along and it would be a severe disservice to everyone who's done *anything* if we did just stop now. Well, actors do this all the time, for various reasons (Johnny Depp has enough frequent flyer miles to earn a free ticket to Alpha Centauri). And other people do, as well -- it's surprisingly common for people to spend the week where they work and go "home" to their families on weekends. Some actors hate LA, or live in NY but get a movie, or live in LA and get a play. Actors probably do it more than most other professions because acting tends to be "temp work" by its nature. This doesn't mean it's not rough, or that it's something you'd want to do indefinitely. But it's certainly *possible*, even without supernatural abilities. That doesn't mean Ger will want to do it. I have to agree here, the timing on the suggestion to "just let go" is absurd. In a couple of hours I will be picking her up at the airport so we can do this turnover. Courtesty of FedEx, I am sitting here with over $5000 in checks in my hand-- raised for an excellent cause by a group of organized, determined, _caring_ people who know exactly what they want and are working *hard* for it. In a week I will be on the road to Vegas to spend a day standing and smiling and answering questions and passing out bags and flyers at NAPTE as part of the final push of this incredible effort. We've worked long and hard to go from nothing to the building momentum of a truly spectacular effort here... and someone's suggesting we stop and say "Oh well, just forget it" ??? I of course don't want to be doing anything to give the cast and crew grief-- no one does-- but if they really do want us to just give up and go away (*which I have yet to hear!*)... they've taken their sweet time about letting us know. It would be incredibly wasteful and downright tragic to kill the momentum we've got now. At the very least, I would ask that everyone keep with it wholeheartedly until after NAPTE-- another week and a half won't kill *anybody*. Maybe mine is a selfish attitude, but I want to watch shows that spark my imagination, that make me think, that I *enjoy*. The concern about adequate funding for a fourth season is a legitimate one, but perhaps something we can address. If FK was aired in a consistent time slot in syndication or advertised more in syndication, that could help the ratings which might translate into more revenue from advertising. Or another sponser might be convinced to replace (or exceed!) the funding USA provided for episodes. The efforts we have all been making are showing a growing market for the show still exists and that in itself may have some impact on what TPTB decide to do with the show beyond this season. Many, many people have put their creativity, dedication, and *money* into this effort to save a show that we all at least enjoy (else, why would we be on this list?). We can't give up now. If we *don't* get anything beyond this season, then, by golly, we ought to be able to look back and say "It wasn't for lack of *trying*." --Sandra Gray, forever Knightie --tmp_harkins@d....... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 22:03:06 -0500 From: "(sp?) Well-maybe, you see UPN is owned by Paramount which is the parent company of Viacom which owns USA and Sci-Fi channel. Now although these companies are intertwined, more or less, it doesn't mean one has to do with the other. Egos abound in the business so, even though Kay "get me those numbers" Klopovitz or Rod "Hey I use to work for CBS" Perth may not want anything to do with the show someone over at Viacom, Which is owned by Sumner Redstone CEO, might be delighted. Lucy Salhaney who use to work for Rupert"white trash" Murdoch over at FOX now runs UPN. Confused? Good. welcome to Corporate America. Alikhat? Anyone? Specifically, >what kind of clothing did rich men and women wear in the early to >mid-eighteenth century in America? Say around 1720 or 1730. oh boy can i help you with that. women= dresses over hoop skirts (side hoops) watteau pleats in the back (sort of like a train going from the shoulders down), wigs (powdered), face powder and patches )(half-moon, hearts whatever to hide the pockmarks), the sleeves would be gathered just after the elbows and hang down. men= coats with big cuffs (the better to hide daggers in my dear) the coats had no collars until the 1760s NOTE: these coats are daily wear they are not equivalent to the coats of today/ waistcoats (i.e. vests with long sleeves but no cuffs), nice flowy shirts, cravats very flowy with perhaps a jewel pinned to the center, breeches buckled over socks, jackboots if they're riding a horse (boots that come up to just above the knee with the back of the knee part cut out-square toes), a greatcoat {overcoat} with a couple of capes depending on how rich they are, a sword (mandatory for all men of rank) would probably be a colichemarde if they were using their sword often. A colichemarde is a sword that has a triangular blade and is thick at the hilt and then tapers down abruptly halfway down the blade. they wouyld wear gloves and short powdered wigs, probably have a quizzing glass on a chain and a tricorne. does that help? toni mandry e.w. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 23:04:50 -0500 From: Marcia Tucker <ScFiMarci@a.......> Subject: Keep posted re Ger Conference... I would have loved to maintain the date as the 20th, but I have a job interview in Rye, NY on Friday and, due to technical difficulties, now must make & fold *2,000* flyers for NATPE on Friday night/Saturday. So, I offer you a choice: you may still show up on Saturday the 20th, but you'll be pressed into folding flyers and I can't guarantee how awake vs. stressed I'll be. If you can make it on the 27th, I think we'll get more people, because this weekend is both close to ARISIA and the start of the semester for many. So, the 27th it is. If you need more info or want directions, e-mail me. My apartment can be reached by car, and /or the train & bus stations are nearby. On a happier note, I called my affiliate station today and the programming director, Marylou, was surprised to find out about the cancellation (c'mon other RI FKers), but asked me to fax her info to pass on to the manager. She was very supportive and promised to make the manager ASK FOR FK at NATPE. My mom also faxed the station.
