Our local paper ran the NY Daily News piece. WNYW was running over and hour late, and I thought it wasn't on, so I went to bed. No problem, I thought... I'll wait and see it on USA Tuesday night. So I'm sitting by the television 15 minutes in advance, remote in hand, waiting to tape the first new episode in AGES. The Announcer says something about Nick attending an exorcism, and I got nervous. Then the first scene of "Sons of Belial" flashed on the screen, and I got very, very depressed. Does anyone know if USA will *ever* be showing "Strings"? They're certainly going to get a call from me tomorrow. Now I'm going to comfort myself (a little) with this morning's tape of "Dark Shadows". Look how far we've come, how much good we've done as an organized charitable effort, and how well we've done at our other efforts -- we're about to deploy a well-informed, bright, demographically appealing Strike Force at one of the television industry's leading economic events, an event at which many attending station personnel will have heard personally of FK's situation from us, and all the others will learn of it from our advertising and handout campaign. USA and TriStar as corporate entities are well aware of our efforts. This is one seriously astonishing group of people. My snail address is: Lisa Wolters, 0000 Xxxxxxxxxxxx Xx., Xxxxxx Xxxxx XX 00000. I think we now have a pretty solid campaign underway. We've been writing to USA, the local stations, and the advertisers--but I don't think any of us had thought of putting flyers in with our regular bills. I *like* this idea, and will definitely start doing it ASAP. A lot of us (me included) are already posting flyers at book stores, gaming store, etc., and finding fans of the show, or people who at least know what it is, just about everywhere. Our "biggest guns" will be representatives at the upcoming NATPE convention in Las Vegas. We'll be handing out thousands of free plastic bags that say "Renew Forever Knight" on the day that USA's prez is due to receive an award from her peers, *and* we have placed an ad in Electronic Media, which is going to all NATPE participants. The bags and the ad cost us close to $5,000, but I think they're worth it. Hopefully, TriStar and USA will sit up and notice. We've started a campaign to call all our local stations to tell them to ask TriStar/USA for a fourth season of Forever Knight at NATPE. We've organized all of this in less than a month. We're very lucky to have a number of persistent, very dedicated people among us who aren't afraid of trying anything. And we're extra lucky to have people like you to help!! IMO, such suggestions *at this point* totally disrespect the many dedicated fans who have *already* poured into it their hearts and souls, as well as given considerable time, energy, and money. Was it that post of what Ger was to have said (to someone else) that whipped the ones who want to quit -- or rather, who want others to quit? Fear of losing? Fear of success? Or is it that they didn't care to begin with? I dunno, and I don't really want to point fingers. However, I do know that Kay Koplovitz will laugh her expensive business suit off if we can't follow this through. Yes, quitting will simply justify her decision that FK has too few real fans to bother with and it will confirm that she was *smart* to kill our show -- I really couldn't blame her though. Could you? If you're worried about Ger and the others, remember one thing. They are successful because of *this List*. If it weren't for this List, the majority of current fans would never have heard of or even noticed any of them. The stars' fan clubs were started by FK fans! I.e., this List has not hurt and cannot hurt the success or opportunities of Ger or anyone. The bottom line is that the publicity generated by the Save FK Campaign has increased the chances that Ger, Nigel, Catherine and the others will have a better shot at future success. Having had years of Virginia history pounded into my brain in both elementary and high school, I am imprinted too strongly to quit this revolution now. We specifically asked him -- no, implored him -- to tell us THEN if he and/or the cast and crew did NOT want us to proceed with the SOS FK campaign, becausewe were about to commit real time and money to this effort. His answer, while not encouraging as to our chances of success, did not indicate that he opposed a new series: he told us he thought it was a very long shot, but that "in this business, you never know". He did NOT suggest that anyone involved with FK opposed a fourth season. Now, it could be that things have deteriorated since then, but even so, I found Laurie S's post, in the middle of everything, quite disturbing. A lot of people have just invested a great deal of time and money in this effort, leading into NATPE. It may well be that after the NATPE effort, everything will be disbanded, but to post this now, when people have committed time, money and heart and soul to this effort is extremely cruel. At a minumum, it would have been more politic to wait until the end of next week, after the NATPE effort when we were in a stage of regrouping, before posting this. Just my opinion, but considering I just invested in the neighborhood of $8,000 in this effort, which may or may not be reimbursed; that Cynthia flew down to LA at her own expense for the PAF handover; that six people are investing their own time and money in flying to Las Vegas for NATPE; that dozens are involved in paying for bags and flyers to be distributed there as well as the EM advertisement; and that hundreds of others have invested time and money in letters and presents to their local syndies, sponsors, etc, all tied to NATPE, I found this post remarkably ill-timed. The time to speak up definitively was two weeks ago. Or after NATPE. Not now. Did you see a new episode of FK this past weekend? Have you written a letter to your local syndication station telling them that you saw the epsiode and thanking them for showing it? If not--WRITE! If you have a few lottery tickets, send then one. There are a few new episodes coming up--we have to keep on the pressure until after NATPE. So write your syndicators ONCE A WEEK until after NATPE. Also, we've been hearing from quite a few people who have called syndicators and found they've been the only ones in their area. For heaven's sake--CALL! NOW! We HAVE to get the syndicators to understand that they have to ASK for FK at NATPE. Which means you have to call to let them know that YOU'RE watching! If we don't get a fourth season and you don't call, you can only blame yourself. If we DO get a fourth season and you don't call . . . well, Nick's not the only one who can indulge in massive guilt complexes. I'm reposting the phone script. If you work during the day, call at lunch. Call from a payphone (for most of you it's a local call). But CALL! Make one call to every syndicator in your area and tell them-- * That you watch Forever Knight on their station (giving them the day and the time is impressive) * That you'd like to see them continue to show Forever Knight--namely, a new season next year * That you've discovered from the distributor, TriStar (you don't have to tell them HOW) that they're not planning to produce another season because they don't think syndicators are interested * That TriStar would be willing to produce another season if they received enough calls to their SYNDICATION SALES department from syndicators asking for the series AND * That if interested stations approached TriStar at NATPE and asked for Forever Knight, it would prove to them that there's enough interest in the series to produce it. Tell them to call TriStar and ASK for a fourth season! If you're a phone weenie like me, you can talk to programming, or ask them who is in charge of purchasing programs. If you're a brave phonian, talk to the general manager of the station. If you freeze up, print the above note and use it as a checklist while you're on the phone (that's what I usually do). DON'T harrass them. DON'T make more than one call per person. DON'T threaten not to watch their station any more DON'T mention USA or the net (unless they specifically ask you where you received your information) DO let them log your name and telephone number. (That proves you're not a crank call and you're willing to let them verify the information you've given, as well as your interest). We don't want to tie up their phones like last time. We DO want to give them an idea of just how many potential fourth season viewers are out here. Faxes are a nuisance and many are tossed. Some stations actually LOG calls. Calls prove that the interest is genuine. We basically have two days to get the word out to them before most of them head for Vegas--Thursday & Friday. Calls on Monday or Tuesday might be too late, but couldn't hurt. If your local syndie station doesn't carry the show, call them anyway, ask them why, and tell them that you'd be interested in seeing it on their station next year--but they HAVE to call to make that possible. Fred (and many of our other contracts) have emphasized how important it is that syndie stations actually CALL TriStar and ask for the show. Even if TriStar doesn't plan on selling the show and we fail to get the stations to phone ahead, if we send stations to NATPE with FK on their brains so that they ask at the TriStar booth, TriStar WILL get the message. If they have enough stations ask for FK on Monday morning, by noon some poor TriStar slob will be at a Vegas Kinkos by noon, photocopying a quick and dirty presskit for a fourth season of Forever Knight that can be handed out in response to inquiries. For the next three days, this is more important than the letter campaigns (but don't stop writing, either). Get your non-list friends to call. Spread the word to local clubs to call. Just call. If you don't have the phone number, call directory assistance. Or check the web site. Or check the fksta.txt and synupdt.txt files on the FTP site. Or ask on the list. I didn't get back from Arisia until late Sunday night, then Monday I had to pack for another trip. Tuesday I spent traveling and now, finally I have a moment to gather my notes. First off, everyone who participated in the Arisia effort should get high notes of praise. There was a great deal of energy there and it was noticed by many of TPTB as evidenced by an article in the Boston Herald which appeared on Sunday. Also, a special note of praise should be given to Rae Montor. Unfortunately she was incapacitated by an unfortunate incident and was unable to continue staffing the FK table. However her place was taken by Ron the Enforcer and quite a few others who offered to help out. Of the two panels on "Forever Knight" several things came out. First: It was suggested that a television segment for talk shows be put together and offered to the different ones taped in different cities. For the Fox talk shows it was suggested that the following people be asked: Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Joan Winston, Bjo Trimble, and anyone local who is involved with Alien Nation be contacted and asked to join. This would be offered as a group of people who have been involved with the revivals and saving of "cancelled" television shows. It was also suggested that Fred Mollin be contacted to see if he would be willing to participate. Local FK fans would be notified of the date of taping so that they could be in the audience. It was also warned that if/when this comes to pass, all participants should remember to dress in a professional manner, no t-shirts. It was emphasized that all letters to the advertisers should talk about how because "my stockbroker saw the advertisements on Forever Knight he suggested that I buy stock in your company." Never ever say that we are part of an organized effort or that we are "fans." The last goes to all letters written to any executive of the show, networks, stations and sponsors. "Organized efforts" are discounted. Susan DeGuardeola, who sells commercial time for cable television to advertisers, joined one of the panels. She pointed out how the present news releases tended to hand journalists a sword against the show. She demonstrated how news releases must be written with short snappy sentences, how they should not have any negatives in them and should be totally positive in their approach. "Beware of double negatives." Also a news release should only be about one thing at a time. The present news release is pushing too many ideas all at once. It was also suggested that this effort constantly be tied to the "Star Trek" efforts to illustrate how successful the "cancelled" show really is and how it can make millions of dollars for Columbia Tri-Star. Besides, the efforts are not "unprecedented." Susan also told us how her boss recently commented to her on the fabulous ratings and demographics "Forever Knight" has and how easy it is to sell time to advertisers for those time slots. The conclusion that was drawn was that for whatever reason this show is being cancelled, it's not for ratings. It was also brought to the attention of the people attending the panel that in Hollywood, there is one commandment "cover thine backside." Every decision is made by a committee of people and therefore it is impossible to point the finger at one person and say "he or she" is the one who cancelled a show. Respectfully submitted, A. Hopefully those of you who mentioned missing it this weekend will be able to see it now. Incidentally, I finally managed to upload the latest faq to both the Showbiz and SFRT2 libraries on GEnie, though it takes a day or two for them to clear. Basically, my attitude is more a reflextion of the crew up in Toronto.. ROUGHLY. After talking with a few people, Valerie Meachum and I have, in a sense, decided to make our goal to boost the moral on the set and you all can help. During the week of NAPTE we are suggesting that cards, letters, etc of appreciation be sent to the "Staff, Crew and Cast" of Forever Knight. I really don't think they realize just how big and successful the drive to keep the show alive is becoming. Valerie and I want to make them more aware. So, send your cards, letters, etc... to: Paragon Entertainment 119 Spadina Ave, Suite 900 Toronto, Ontario M5Z 2L1 Canada Tell them all how much you've appreciate all they have done. If this is right, I'm not at all surprise, when I found out that CJOH (CTV) would be the only way I would get FK this year, I knew I was in trouble especially when I found out that it would be starting in november instead of september so I found someone who was nice enough to tape it for me (THANK YOU!!). To me CTV is the same as CBS, they air a show for a few episodes and than cancels it and before they cancel the show they usually move it around alot so even those few episodes we do get to see are hard to find. That's why I don't start watching new shows on CTV or CBS because I know that within 3-4 episodes it will be canceled. When I hear of a new show that will be shown on CTV or CBS, I feel sorry for that show because I know they won't be given enough time to create an audience or a fair chance. And making the Raven club into just another strip joint, ala' SS and almost every other USA Network show, wasn't the best of moves. Gary L.
