Barclay Hope (aka, Roger the molestor) showed up last week on Showtime's
"The L Word". He's playing Jennifer Beals' character's (Bette's) lawyer. I
believe he'll be on this week, also, but not sure of anything post that.

regarding a job working in Seattle doing remote
recruiting for their Ottawa and Toronto offices!!! You
can bet I said "HECK YES" (only a bit more
professionally ;)

Question:
In Queen of Harps, Nick was told he's have to go to the Crusades.
Did he leave straight for them from Wales or did he go home first?
In Be My Valentine, he told LaCroix his mother and sister had not
seen him since he left for the crusades.
This would seem to imply he did indeed go home first.
If this did happen, how much travel time did this all take?
Back then ,just how long might it have taken to travel from
point A to point B?

I like Canon stories with N & N, Alternate realities or the "continuation" of
the saga with the whole cast of all three seasons within them.

If you look at this timeline at about.com, one army
set out in May of 1096 for the Holy Land, and in
December of that year the "last of the armies
arrived."

http://atheism.about.com/library/FAQs/christian/blchron_xian_crusades02.htm?terms=crusades

Armies traveled by horse, sea, and on foot. It would
take a minimum of 4-6 months for the mounted troops to
make it from western Europe (Primarily France) to
reach the middle east.

Regarding Nick and his travels, I would be willing to
bet that he did NOT see his family before he was
shipped off, since he was being sent as a punishment,
as it were. But he probably saw them before he left
for Wales. That would be my guess as to how it would
have worked in reality.

(I've done a lot of research on the middle ages due to
my education-minor in medieval studies, and my main
hobby, which is as a member of the SCA, and having a
14th Century French character.)

Knight?! Toronto?! It's a SIGN! (you're going to run into a LaCroix-like
figure soon. RUN!) <G>

However, armies travel much more slowly than small groups of mounted
men. It's possible that Nick joined a small group of men traveling to
join the troops already in the Middle East, and made good time (2
months with good sailing weather). We don't know the date he went, we
only know that he was back in Paris in 1228, the year the Sixth
Crusade started.

As for dates and which Crusade Nick participated in, to quote Mary
Combs' post on the subject in 1998 (I kept a printout!):

"If we assume that QoH took place around 1215-1218, with Nick in his
early or mid-20s..., it's plausible that Nick sailed to Outremer to
join up with the Fifth Crusade, which Innocent III called in 1215. It
was fought in Egypt and it was a failure. There's only a whiff of
parmesan (cheesy rationalization) required to say that when Delabarre
says "take your sword to Jerusalem," he's speaking metaphorically.
When, in 1228 (or 1229?), Fleur talks of losing Nicholas "again" to
the Crusades, we can assume that he has told his family that he is
going to follow Frederick II on the Sixth Crusade."

Of course, the great thing about fanfic is that you can make Nick's
journey easy or hard, long or short, with an army or just twenty other
knights.

I like to think he got to say goodbye to his family on his way to
Aigues-Morte to sail for the Middle East. It's not like it's a big
detour, after all, and heck, he probably had to drop off his wash for
his mom to do. <g>

One thing we have also overlooked was he could have
been sent to the Albigensian Crusade, which was
actually an endeavor within France against the
heretical Cathar religion in the Languedoc.

Do we actually know for sure that he was sent to
Jerusalem? I think it is probably most likely, but the
Albegensian Crusade is another alternative.

Interesting thought, but bearing in mind the scenes where Nick is
faced with memories of refusing to go through the glowing portal, and
seeing his own corpse on a slab in the middle of a sea of sand, and
meeting up with "Lacroix of Arabia" wearing the Bedouin getup, it's
more probable that he did, indeed, go to the Middle East.

I'm doing a report on the food in Tunisia (of all things!) It's in Northern
Africa, for those that don't know. (I sure as heck didn't!) And Tunisia's
prosperous time started, it seems with the rise of the Hafsid dynasty. It
started in...1228. ::Evil chuckle:: Homework got a little more interesting
for a moment there.

In my opinion, he did go home first. I mean, really, why not? He would want to
go home because he would know that it would be his last chance to see his family
(possibly including his father at that time) for some years, and that he might
even be killed while he was on the crusade. It would be cruel to deny him a
chance to say goodbye.

And then, too, I want to picture him visiting the church in Brussels on his
journey. I recently found out about the wonderful Cathedral of St. Michael and
St. Gudula in Brussels (part of Brabant). Apparently, a church has been on that
site (Treurenberg hill) since the 1100's. The church provided hot food and
shelter to travelers, along with the protection of St. Michael the Archangel.
In 1226, Henrik I of Brabant started construction of a Gothic cathedral on the
site, which took 300 years to build. The two towers that are there today were
built in the 1400's. I like to think of Nick, stuck watching the construction
of this magnificent cathedral from the outside.

The Cathedral:

St. Gudula: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=3613
     http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintg36.htm
St. Michael the Archangel (patron saint of Brussels and police officers,
amongst other things):

officers' prayer to St. Michael)

As for the question of whether Nick actually went on a crusade to the Holy Land
(as opposed to Egypt or Languedoc), wasn't there something that Erica said in
one of the Last Act flashbacks, about seeing Nick in a Middle Eastern-type
setting?

Nah, I'm more worried about remembering the Hafsid. And not laughing out
loud when I have to tell the class that they started in 1228. They just
wouldn't get it. :)

I too really like the way the 2nd season coat flows! Liked it soo much I
tried to find one in PHX (not an easy task!). Found it, and had to leave it
(too expensive!). But lo and behold, Santa brought it to me on Christmas.
Lots of happy dance!! But back to Amanda's question.

I think it may have been made from a very light weight wool, maybe even
camelhair. I know mine is 100% wool, and very warm and quite water
resistent. Hope this helps.

Yours bundled up nicely, Debbi

Delabarre explicitly stated that Nick has to go to Jerusalem.
But I would subscribe to him not getting much further than Damietta.
The 5th Crusade is very likely the one referred to, since the 6th is too
late for him to be actively involved.
Although, there were minor campaigns fought in between the 'official'
crusades.
I have had a crusading story in the works for over two years now (Will
it ever be finished?
The gods know.), and I found that 1219 works fine for me.
