Subject: Catherine Disher on CBC Radio again

I was listening to the radio last night, and I caught part 3 of a CBC Radio One
docu-drama, "Faint Hope". The CBC calls this a "ground-breaking docudrama that
explores the story of Laurence Stocking, a prison inmate who died under
controversial circumstances at Millhaven Institution in 1998".
(http://www.cbc.ca/fainthope)Ground-breaking is right! CBC covered Stocking's
story while he was alive, so they have lots of tape of Stocking talking to CBC
reporters, and so I was rather surprised to listen to a news report by the
familiar voice of Maureen Brosnahan--then it switched to the informal chat
between Stocking and Brosnan, with Disher playing the role of Brosnahan. Very
unexpected.

You can hear the final part of this series on the internet at 8:00 local time
(check http://www.cbc.ca/listen/index.html for more info). It's a great story,
and great acting from Disher.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CBC released the whole 2 1/2 hour docu-drama on
a 2 CD set; they've done that kind of thing before.

Your humble & obedient servant,
Angela Gottfred

Subject: Question

Okay, Nick was a Knight in the Crusades, but what order was he from? I've read
that the three main orders were Templars, Hospitallars, and Teutonics. Which
order would he have been in, and what's the difference between the three? Thanks
for any and all help!

He didn't have to be a member of either. A lot of noble
men went to the crusades for personal reasons
(religious or monetary) or joined the following of one
of the kings. Nick was sent there as a punishment,
remember, not voluntarily - he was still in the service
of DeLabarre.
Only a small contingent of knights fighting in the
crusades belonged to one of the orders.

There's a ton of info on the Internet about each. Use a search
engine. To give a decent answer to the difference between them it
would be several messages worth. I think to put it very concisely,
the Hospitalars started medical services and the Templars started the
first banking services. I'm not sure about the Teutonics.

I've read fanfic where Nick was a Templar and others where he was a
Hospitalar. (I don't remember the names of the stories. He was a
Hospitallar in a story where he was going to a costume party and he
dressed as a knight and someone greeted him as a Templar.)

I like the comments that he didn't have to be member of the orders.
Would the poncho thingy he wore in the show where he went back to
Brabant (with the crosses on it) be indicative of any order?

As far as I could tell it wasn't. But the sign of the
cross denoted anyone fighting for the Christian side
(usually two rags stitched to the cloak did the job).
But If I remeber correctly (correct me if I don't),
Lord DeLabarre "worked" for the Holy See, ie the Pope.
Nick therefore would have too, which could explain the
cosses (the official insignia of the Pope are different
though).
Besides, I cannot picture Nick to be the member of one
of the orders - they weren't just knights, they were
monks too.

The Teutonic order (which still exists btw) very
quickly left the Holy Land and concentrated its efforts
on the Christianisation of Eastern Europe (now Poland,
and the Baltics). They were very succesful and became
rather influential (not to mention rich) in that
region. They were no longer active in the Holy Land, so
Nick couldn't have been one of them.
