That may be true, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm a student with tuition
due and a limited income. $80.00 simply *isn't* in the budget. I hope that, if
the information is accurate, Sony re-thinks the price. Getting a smaller profit
at $23.00 is better than getting none at all because people can't afford your
product.

.... on Saturday night (well, okay, Sunday morning, since it started after
midnight) they showed Nigel's 'Darkman III: Die, Darkman, Die - which I very
nearly missed! My stupid tv magazine put it in tiny little letters at the
bottom of the page, and I didn't spot it. Fortunately, I was visiting with
a girlfriend, and on checking her tv magazine (different brand), they very
sensibly had it in big bold letters - and being a fannish friend, she
immediately insisted on setting the timer to record it for her guest,
despite the fact that she doesn't know who Nigel is (can't get any of the
channels that have shown Forever Knight or any of his other tv shows, poor
thing) as she understood the importance of not missing one of *your* actor's
movies.

And tomorrow, at 10.35 pm, they're showing 'Murder at 1600'! So to my
fellow Brits - stand by your vcrs! Nice BBC1, kind BBC1! So... where's the
third Nigel movie, please? <G>

FYI

I just checked and The Forever knight Trilogy part 1 is now available for
ordering in Canada from Amazon.ca

List price $41.73, their price $29.21 a saving of $12.52.

Of course having never ordered anything over the computer I don't know
when or even if I'll get the nerve up to buy it this way but I thought
the Canadian fans might be interested in knowing that it was there. Beats
having to pay the difference between our two dollars.

Maybe for you, but a lot of people have been laid off from work this
past year and can barely afford to pay their rent, let alone spend that
much money on DVDs. $23 is a reasonable price to save up for in so
short a period of time. $80 is not, when it's a good chunk of your
weekly paycheck.

> I've been very disappointed reading many of the posts since the DVDs

Please keep in mind that a lot of people in the US and elsewhere are
struggling to make ends meet. Until the US economy recovers and more
jobs are available, a lot of people are going to have to put buying FK
DVDs on hold until next year. I've added them to my wish list on
Amazon, but I can't guarantee that I'll be able to afford them when
October comes. The survival job that I've taken barely pays for the
rent, car payment and groceries, let alone extras. It's also
temporary, so I don't even know if I will be working in October.

The DVDs will still be around a year from now. They are not going to
suddenly vanish, unlike the roof over my head if I don't make my rent
payment. And I really don't want to move back in with my parents.

My take on the responses to the possibility that the price may change
is that the tone of the responses makes me feel that people expect Sony
to lower their prices just because people can't afford it otherwise.
Well, that won't happen and I feel that expectation is unrealistic.
People are in that boat all the time and do have to make decisions on
what to spend their money on, but that won't make Sony change the price
of the DVD's. I, myself, after several years, have finally dug myself
out of a very deep financial hole where I was able to buy a new furnace
so I could have heat in my house ( I lived two years in my house
without a working furnace. The warmest I could get it, and still be
able to pay for it, using gas logs, was 55 degrees. I still don't have
any air conditioning), I can pay my bills and have some left over ( if I
don't eat out, don't go to movies, don't buy clothes, etc) . And I and
my kids could not have moved back into my parents house. I hope, then,
that I will be able to buy all 3 seasons at the higher price. I may
not be able to when they actually come out, but I don't expect Sony to
cut the price just so I can buy it.

Subject: FK DVD Pricing Issue

For what it's worth, if everyone preordered the DVDs at the low price, that
price would have to be honored. However, I also have ER's first season on
preorder (it comes out on 8/26). I paid less than $40 with promotional
discounts and the like, but since I had ordered back in June, the price
jumped from $41.19 pre-discounts at checkout to $44.99, pre-checkout. Then
again, the ER set does have the frills/extras, etc., too. So it makes a bit
of a difference. I guess what I am trying to say is that those who have
ordered the set for the $22-$25 estimated price should have it honored...but
it *can* rise even in the pre-ordering phase, so just be careful and keep
checking.

Wendy, who'll be broke between both the ER and FK sets! *G*

Subject: Help for FK DVDs

Luckily, I am not in circumstances where I would not be able to
afford the FK DVDs should the price increase, but I have been touched
by people who have said they may not be able to afford them (and this
after having to wait so long for it to come out on video)
I would like to put out a suggestion. Maybe... those of us who can
afford to buy multiple sets, when we get them, can offer them as a
reduced rate, or as gifts or similar type thing to those who cannot
afford them. Kind of like a scholarship type thing. We have such a
wonderful fandom here, I'm sure something can be arranged.
Of course it would be on the honor system, those who can afford them
*could* lie just so they don't have to pay full price.
As I said this is just a thought. Sony won't be out any money
because, I am not talking about copying or anything, but actually
buying an extra set.
I do plan to buy a set for a friend of mine who doesn't have a lot of
extra money. Yeah, if it does wind up being $80, it will probably be
her Christmas present, instead of just a friendship gift, but hey....
Any other ideas?

Yes, I am fairly certain that the price a person has pre-ordered at has to
be honored even if the price did go up (I asked Gord at tvshowsondvd.com
about this too). If the price jumped, that would only affect people who have
*not* ordered their copies yet. So...if I were you I would definitely
pre-order a set at amazon.com or where ever you prefer. You can always
cancel it later if necessary. FK is currently ranked at #95 at amazon.com
and #22 at amazon.ca! :)

I did find the $79.95 retail price at dvdplanet.com. They just listed the FK
set today. However, it's only $55.97 on sale there. Still a very reasonable
price if you ask me. Even if my local Best Buy has the higher price too, I
still plan to buy an extra set to help support sales and ensure we get *all*
3 seasons.

Subject: Re: FK DVDs

Something that people need to realize on the pricing issue is that
you're comparing FK to monster hits like Buffy. Buffy has so many more
fans all over the world willing to buy the DVDs that they can offer
them for a moderate price.

FK, however, is a cult show with a limited number of fans in
comparison. It costs the same to set up to produce FK DVDs as it does
for Buffy DVDs---but nowhere near as many people will be buying them.
The Buffy DVD price is the result of "economy of scale"---they sell
more, thus recoup their expenses in volume. FK will most probably not
be able to take advantage of this basic economic principle. I recently
bought the DVDs for the first season of La Femme Nikita (also a cult
show) for about $72. I see no reason why FK wouldn't sell for
approximately the same price.

I doubt they'll give us much in the way of extras in the subsequent
seasons for a simple reason---it would cost a lot of money to get
people together again to do narrations, and the fact that the show has
been out of production for so long, people's memories fade and it's
unlikely they could truly do a director's commentary or something like
that with any depth or conviction. They've all moved on.

I'll be happy to take what I can get---good, clear copies of the
episodes without commercials. And I'll pay whatever they charge. After
all, didn't we spend a lot of time trying to convince the PTB that
their primary audience was middleaged women with lots of disposable
income? <g>

Looking forward to my DVDs (preordered from buy.com)

Hi, folks. I just got back from Wolfville. Ger did a couple of shorter
pieces: Eugene O'Neill's "Hughie" and David Mamet's "Sermon." He looked
great and relaxed. He came out and saw fans after the production and
kindly signed autographs and posed for pictures.

I also had a chance to see other fans, which was wonderful.

On a final note, my ISP was out of commission for a while, so my mail may
have been bouncing for as long as 10 days, and I have not been receiving
list posts. I apologize to anyone who might have tried to contact me.

Have a great day.

That's not true. I've pre-ordered items and when the price changed, they
notified me the pre-ordered price changed. But I was notified of the change... I
don't remember, but I think that my order was even canceled and I had to
re-order at the new price. But I'd still consider $50 in my "affordable" range,
but I would only be ordering 1 set. I pay around that for Buffy per season (but it
has loads of extras). After thinking on the situation, I'd order Buffy at
that price extras or no extras, and the same with FK.

I don't expect Sony to lower their price at all so I could afford it, anymore
than I expect Paramount to lower their Star Trek sets so I can afford them. I
simply don't buy them. But if that happens, I'll simply "request" it from the
local library. I doubt they can afford a higher price either, but it wouldn't
hurt to put in the request.

The fact is, they charge $79, I can NOT afford it right now and won't buy it
- although I discovered last night my Amazon credit card had its limits raised
so maybe.... <g>

No, I sure didn't because I may be reaching middleage, but the days of
disposable income went down the drain with the economy and rising costs of
living<g>
But although I agree with your theory of "mass producting" to a degree, but
I'm not sure it works in this case. Why? Then why are Trek DVDs so high priced?
Why are numerous other series so high, while other popular series are priced
low "to sell?" You can't say "extras" because Buffy and Angel is loaded with
extras. Trek is probably one of the most popular fan-based series on the world,
and they are priced high.

However, I'm not going to fret because those of us who can't afford them now,
may be able to later. Also, the price hasn't risen on my pre-order. In
addition, the price, if raised, may eventually go down as is the tradition with
movie DVDs.

Although an irritation, I've got other more real problems to worry about than
the price at the moment - like I probably need new glasses I can't afford,
hearing aids I can't afford, etc. The DVDs, even if the price changes to a $79
suggested retail price, will find their way into my cabinet one way or another
even if they have to wait (which I'll worry about WHEN the price increases on
my pre-order).

I just thought of something. Amazon offers a 10% discount to a friend
whenever you order something. You just need to know their name and
e-mail address. When I pre-ordered my DVD, I got the pop-up screen. I
know 10% isn't a lot, especially if they jack up the price, but it
could make the DVD more affordable to some.

And I will have to wait to get it when it comes out. There can be a big price
difference from store to store also. I had looked at Circuit City for
Highlander Season Two. They had it for $80.00. Since I was also buying Buffy
Season
Two that day, I couldn't get it there. But, we went to Wal-mart after, and they
had it for $50.00. So I brought it home. I also asked the person in
Wal-mart if they were going to carrry FK and was told "I'll look into it for
you".
