Yes, the skylight was used in several episodes; the only one which
springs to mind this instant is "Stranger than Fiction", where LC used
it to give stage directions to Janette about what she should do with
Emily Weiss.

Also, the appearance of the building is going to change substantially,
what with those two new floors and all. Last chance to see it look like
an old warehouse, instead of a new loft apartment with a bunch of
"terraces" (balconies, I presume) on the upper levels.

Well, since the sunrise was always streaming into the loft in the morning,
I'd say that he'd have to have had an eastern view, and we definitely know
that it was in the corner near the water tower....
hmmmm, I'd say Units 22 AND 23 (since that loft was definitely bigger than
850 sq ft) and it would have to be Level 7, since we have to have a place
for the skylight (and no one EVER came up the steps....wherever they were.)
I wonder if the people that will buy these condos will know that we have
their building on our own personal historic register!
Find out how much these are going for! I've always been interested in
international investments.... :>)

I was under the impression that these were very pricey loft apartments, from
what I calculated by the price per square footage, around $300,000 canadian
for the average loft.

I would have to say Level 3 or 7 (units 11, 30, 29, 28). These are
the only ones with the ability for windows on the front and back.
Nick had windows in the front (looking over the garage) and also in
the back (seen in AMPH on the walkway upstairs)
Of course there's always the skylight.
Maybe since he would be there before the construction, he has the 7th
floor, maybe 4 separate ones combined - knock out the walls....

just to set the record straight, Nick's loft definitely could not have
been on levels 6 or 7, because the existing building has only 5 floors.
Six and 7 will be added to the building when it is renovated and will be
almost entirely glass-walled. Definitely NOT a good idea for someone with
a "severe sun allergy" <g>

That's amazing! They are tiny! Where would a grand piano, motorcycle,

But Nick owned the whole building, not just a tiny apartment! He could
spread out his stuff as he pleased.

I always figured the rest of the warehouse was filled with boxes of
all the stuff he's been dragging around with him for centuries, a sort
of Antiques Roadshow dreamworld. <g>

Subject: FK LC Buffy question

Okay, i have to ask. i'm watching the old reruns of Buffy on FOX and it's
the ep. where Ford leads a bunch of teens who want to be vamps and he has a
brain tumor and whatnot. In the 'sunset' club when Willow and Zander are
walking down the stairs the first patron is a very LC looking fellow
standing in a big coffin. He gives them a look and turns his head away.
Since this ep. originally aired it's driven me nuts if that was an
intentional FK reference, was Nigel Bennett in some sort of cameo, or just a
coincidence. And a few scenes later Spike approaches Drucilla and says,
"Lucius told me you went out on a hunt....." And this ep. would have been
taking place while FK was still on air. Anyone have a klew?

And since i'm typing away, in what ep. of FK is... Aristotle tending to his
plants with the UV lights?

Many thanx... doubly so to the one who can enlighten me about the Buffy
thing.

I was surfing the onscreen cable guide and came
accross a supernaturally themed program called 'Night
Visions'. Each program has two segments and the title
for the second segment of one of the episodes was "How
to Cure the Common Vampire." It made me think of two
things:

1. I wonder if it's about a doctor helping a vampire
find his mortality

2. Couldn't you just see Nat (and maybe Nick, too)
writing a book with that title 20 or 30 years down the
road? Er....if it weren't for little things like the
Enforcers, that is.

On this topic, the only full ep of Buffy I watched was when I was
staying over at my friend's dorm room. She religiously watched Buffy
so I had to sit there and watch it. It was the episode in which
everything reverses (id humans become vamps, and vamps become human)
I always thought it was a ripoff of Susan's book (Intimations of
Mortality). Do we know which came first?
It is kind of interesting that the only reason I never started
watching Buffy was because when it first came on it was on at the
same time as FK (which I was recording without commercials at the
time) and well..... I had to choose. And I never watched Angel
because it was too much like FK and I didn't like the idea of that
getting a show and FK getting cancelled since they were pretty much
the same premise.

1) Neither the idea of a vampire detective nor "vampire seeking redemption)
are original to FK and Angel is nothing like FK (much more mystical, for one
thing)

2) No idea is original. Joss (who developed Buffy and FK) has enough original
ideas of his own not to steal another writer's idea... Accusations like that
is why there could be a crack down on fan fiction (although Susan's book was
NOT fan fiction but professional). TV production companies do not want law
suits from fans making such claims. Yes, I have read Susan's book.

3) It was not Nigel making a cameo in Buffy. That comes up from time to time.
I don't think we know if "Lucius" was a tribute to FK or note.

4) All three are excellent shows, which doesn't mean if you like one you'll
like the others as that is personal taste, but if you haven't seen them, give
a few episodes a try <g>

By the way, I was interviewed by the Arkansas Democrat Gazette about the end
of the Buffy tv series and did mention FK although due to space limitations,
I'm not sure it will be mentioned. I'm also not sure when the article is due
to run, but I'd assume a week from Tuesday when the last episode airs. (The
star wants to move onto other things)

I remember seeing this once, I think its in the first season, but I also
think that Sci Fi must have cut it from the episodes they air, and those are
the only 1st season eps I have on tape.

As a long-time science fiction reader, I can tell you that this is a
no-brainer; it's the kind of idea which would occur to a lot of writers.
(Role reversal and "biter becomes bitten" are also classic motifs in
folktales.) The difference is what you do with the basic idea once you
get it!

I sincerely doubt that Joss Whedon has ever read Susan's book, or the fanfic
that the book is based on. Buffy is a show where each season is a long story
arc, and each episode adds something to that arc and is carefully written as
such.

People in Hollywood are so sensitive to the possibility of accusations of
plagiarism that, on most shows, anything submitted cold by an unknown writer is
automatically sent back unopened. In short, don't worry. The people on Buffy
are not trolling other fandoms for ideas. They're wildly creative and don't
need to do that. Plus, they're way too busy.

Angel really isn't anything like FK outside of superficialities. FK, for one,
isn't populated by demons, or threatened by a coming Apocalypse. <g> IMO, the
FK vampires are much more interesting as individuals. In the Buffyverse, the
only really interesting vamps (that is, vamps who do more than say "Grr, Argh"
and attack) are Angel and Spike. All the others are pretty much cardboard
villains set up for Buffy to dust. And Angel isn't about personal redemption,
but rather is about Angel as an archetypal Hero who is instrumental in saving
the world. The show has come into its own this past season with quite an
interesting story arc, plus David Boreanaz is finally learning to act. <g>

All three shows (Buffy, Angel, and FK) have their unique charms. I enjoy them
all, but for different reasons---and in my book, FK is still the most
intellectually stimulating and adult. (That said, there was recently a
university conference in England on the Buffyverse, and scholarly papers were
presented!)

It's very hard to spot because it's on one of the surveillance monitors in the
background in the tag of Only The Lonely, where Nick and Schanke stop
dumbfounded as Myra's cousin that she keeps trying to fix Nat up with turns out
to be a gorgeous guy.

Nigel, in a blond wig so he doesn't look like LC, is being put into a cell in
the holding area.

About Angel -- which I don't watch -- and Susan Garrett's Intimations of
Mortality: it was published several years ago. However, I must agree that there
is no probability of deliberate copying.

You left out Drusilla who definitely is very unique (for those who don't know,
she was driven insane before being brought across and is STILL insane as a
vampire), plus Darla who in a way reminds me of LaCroix (though they definitely
are not exactly alike).

> All the others are pretty much cardboard

There are a few other exceptions, but Nancy is right. Most of the vampires are
just targets. They have their moments, then get swept into the wind or the
dustpan.<g>

> And Angel isn't about personal redemption,
> but rather is about Angel as an archetypal Hero who is instrumental in saving
> the world.>>
Exactly. He's also not seeking to become mortal because the fk and Buffy 'verses
are WAYYYY too different for this to happen. Angel and Spike both have souls,
but they are NOT the same beings they were as mortals. They literally did die.
In Buffy, the vampire is NOT the mortal although they may act and have memories
of the mortal who once inhabited their bodies. Demons take over the body and
memories. (Since those two have souls, it is a bit different for them, but they
aren't like Nick who is repaying mankind for their sins - nor are they on a
quest to be mortal again)

> and in my book, FK is still the most
> intellectually stimulating and adult.>>
I'd disagree as I think they are equally adult. HOWEVER, the Buffyverse is
designed to attract a younger audience athough adults also love the show. Buffy
is designed to reflect stages in real life, whereares Angel is designed to show
the character's quest for redemption. Angel is a Champion, a superhero of
shorts. Nick isn't trying to be that - he seems to just be trying to repay
mankind by blending in with mortals. He wants to be a mortal.

Nick deals with mortal crimes. Angel deals with the supernatural.

There's also plenty of books with vampire detectives so you could even say they
are like FK and ANGEL, yet they are also very different.

I once was willing to consider that ANGEL was a rip-off of FK, but now that I
watch the show I see that could be farther from the truth. They are just too
different. It would be like saying Bonanza is a rip-off of Gunsmoke or any other
tv western. Their common theme is they are westerns... Say the same about any
detective show, or Chicago Hope compared to ER. The list could go on...

Angel is more of a superhero/private eye than the detective Nick is.

Forever Knight in San Diego II (August 22-26, 2002)
By Megan Hull

Let's see, day one. Well, for me, day one was Friday. I very nearly
missed the plane, had a hard time finding a ride, but I eventually made
it to the motel, vamp-dressed bunny in tow. I got out of the van and
looked around, and immediately some women standing on the balcony called
out, "Hey, are you Megan?"

That was me!!!! After FORKNI I guess I'm not the shrinking violet I once
was. ;) ~Cloud

I guess I was kinda hard to miss, wearing my Forever Knight shirt as I
was. About half of them were there at the time, the other half having
gone to the animal park. I think I'm glad; half was nearly overwhelming
as it was. To be honest, I wasn't too sure that I hadn't made a big
mistake. These people were weird looking!

Hey now! I REPresent that remark! :D ~Cloud

Anyway, we spent the afternoon hanging out. Went swimming (that water
was COLD), talked, met Jean Graham and Chuck, and generally enjoyed
goofing off.

Don't forget the Raven paperweights Sunny brought for us! Thanks, Sunny.
You did a great job! ~Cloud

Once we were pretty sure the traffic between the motel and the beach had
slacked off, we headed that way with a Hibachi, some hot dogs, and two
coolers full of food. Nummies! It was nearly dark by the time we hit the
beach, though, and a cold wind was coming off the ocean. Which was very
pretty nonetheless. Mindi and I went down to a part of the beach not
covered by the tide, discovered it was warmer and protected from the
wind there, and I absolutely DESTROYED my house key carving our names
into the packed-rock-solid sand. It's a good thing I didn't use my car
key, or I would have been in some REAL trouble! Poor Ter (or was it
Cloud?) had a dickens of a time getting the stupid grill started in that
wind.
http://www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com/lajollacove.htm

You got some dudes mixed up: It was in fact Ter who got the Hibachi
going, not Cloud (although Cloud got pretty much everything else
going.) ~Sunny

We were close to giving up when it finally caught, but because of the
wind fanning the flame, there was no 'low'. So the 'dogs were a little
scorched, but yummy anyway. I had two, and a bunch of potato chips. I'm
not sure we ever found the plain mustard. After messing around with room
arrangements for a while, we all managed to settle down and eventually
sleep. The next morning, I discovered that the curtains of the window I
was sleeping under were NOT light proof. This was at about 6 AM. Ungh.
So I dragged my blankets over to the other side of the room and laid
down near the door, with the bed blocking the light from the window.
Managed to get a few more hours. Cloud laughed at me when she got up,
said I was in danger of getting stepped on. I probably would have bitten
anyone who stepped on me. At least, that's what I used to do as a little
kid at sleep-overs. We raided the breakfast bar and had pastry and fruit
for breakfast. Then... We went SHOPPING! Well, first we went to Rubies
and had lunch, and I got several copies of the FK Novel that Doesn't
Exist. (Shhhh... don't tell anyone!) We went to Hot Topic and I got some
cool looking boots with spikes on them that were on sale (I think Sunny
got an identical pair-at least she was looking at them),...

I don't remember looking at any boots, because my suitcase was so full,
I couldn't even take them with me if I bought them. It must have been
Mindi. She's the shopping crazy among us <g>. ~Sunny

Actually, that was me! :) I have the matching boots, you can even see
them in the pics at Sunny's site.
http://www.lacountess.com/FKnight/Photos_main.html
But I did have to acquire another bag to carry stuff home with me (bless
you Ter for that)... I packed everything so tight in my luggage that
there was no room to take stuff I'd gotten in SD back home with me. *g*
~Tab

... and we went to another place but I don't remember what it was
because by then I had a bad headache and felt anti-social and anxious
and just kinda PMS-y. So when we got back to the motel, Tam was kind
enough to take a walk with me to go get some Rasinettes (she swore those
were the best cure for PMS), buy an umbrella for the sun the next day,
and just let me ramble and rant for a while. Bless you, Tam! Next stop,
the CRYPT! Ooooooo!! (Only about five of us went-- the rest stayed home
to nap.) Cool clothing, but I learned real quick not to let my eyes rest
on anything BUT the clothing for long enough to focus. Ideas like that I
DON'T need! We had a ton of fun trying on stuff, and I bought a shirt
and (with a loan from the sweet and wonderful April) a shiny black
trench coat. My outfit was complete! (Or so I thought.)

Gee, now that I think about it, we did so much stuff, and it was so much
fun. I didn't go to the Crypt, but hey, instead I got to spend the
afternoon with the wonderful Ms. Tamara and a box of chocolate, a bottle
of champagne, and a mouthful of Nick in see-through-nighty ;) ~Sunny
(who else *g*)

We went home and I took MY nap while everyone else began their
preparations for the evening. It was well past dark and time to be on
our way by the time we were all ready to go. We posed for all the cool
pictures that have been passed around and posted-- we all looked
FANTASTIC! We got to meet Ter's friend-- Justin or something, who worked
at the motel, and was dressed all gothy, too.

His name's Brandon. He's not really our friend, I've just seen him a
bunch of times at Club Sabbat. Couple of guys I know think he's pretty
hot eye candy. ~Cloud

He was a dang sight better than the other guy that worked there. Boy,
that other one was a jerk! But we won't get into that. Saturday night.
Sabbat dance! We actually got there a little early, and there weren't a
terrible lot of people there. Ter and I both got our fortunes done by
the local Tarot card reader. Not terribly accurate, but awful cute!

It was I who did the tarot readings with you (and don't get me started
on how off the guy's reading was. He should have a sign there saying
"find out everything that WON'T happen in your life") ~Sunny

Thanks to California's clean-air laws, the club was smoke free. Or at
least, tobacco smoke free; they had fog machines running so you could
see the lasers and the lights. Pretty lights! And it was very loud.
Very, very loud. We were all dressed to the nines; of course, for each
person, that meant something different. I went in a kind of
feminine/neutral style (my favorite)-- everyone predicted that I'd get
hit on by both sexes, with various motives. They were right! Everyone
kept referring to me as their 'androgynous love child'. Silly, silly,
but that's what I was going for, so I guess I achieved it. Everyone
danced, though few of us really knew what we were doing. During one
song, I sat out because I couldn't figure out how to move to the beat,
and someone said "Watch Eric" and pointed out a guy near the middle of
the floor. Now this guy could MOVE!!!! I kept my eyes on him until the
music changed again and I could dance to it. Tam made friends with a
cat-boy. I mean, he had the pointy ears, the whiskers-- he even had cat
spots tattooed on his arms and shoulders! Tam petted his head and I
swear he purred. He was crouching down talking to her, and I just
couldn't resist-- I reached out and gave him a shove to tip him onto his
rear. We also met this guy named Raven and his girlfriend Moria
(pronounced More-ay-a). Raven said his birth name was Ryan, but when his
parents divorced, his father got custody, and his father being a druid,
changed his son's name to Raven. And Raven likes that better, anyway. He
(or maybe someone else) introduced us to the concept of finding your
'inner penguin'-- finding something you're so thrilled about that all
you can do is waddle. Yeah. Anyway, then I admired the motorcycle gloves
he was wearing, and he pulled one off for me to try on. It fit well, and
Raven was impressed; he has very small hands and most people can't wear
his gloves. Then he offered to let me keep them! At first I said 'no',
but then I reconsidered. They looked great! So I said, 'Sure, thanks!'
and my outfit was truly complete. We got back to the motel at like 2 in
the morning,...

Actually, we left the club after 2 ;) They gotta chase me out with a
stick. ~Cloud

... and Sunny got to try her first s'more ever! Ooey-gooeyness!. I kept
meaning to chow a few myself, but never got around to it. Oh, well.
Eating that much sugar at that time of night might not have been such a
great idea for me. We didn't get much sleep, naturally, but we decided
not to be up in time for the opening of the gates at Dizzyland. Good
thing we didn't have our hearts set on it, too, because Ter's car didn't
make it until after noon. Apparently, Ter went on 'auto-pilot' and
headed home instead of to the park. So we took a several-hour detour.
Ter kept apologizing, but we were like, 'listen, we're spending several
hours on a gorgeous summer morning cruising southern California in a
convertible, decked out in goth and with a stack of great music. We're
not complaining!!!!!' Finally, we threatened to use Tab's mini-whip on
her if she didn't stop 'Nicking'. <G> Thanks to a pair of 'special
needs' passes, we got on a lot more rides a lot faster-- Mindi and I
rode Space Mountain at least four times, and all the other good ones at
least once. Of course, we did the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the
Caribbean with all the other freaks. I really felt kind of sorry for the
few mundanes that got caught in there with us! We managed to get to the
last two photo shoots. There were so many goths at the Haunted Mansion
shoot, you almost couldn't see anything-it was a sea of black.

According to the organizers of Bats Day there were over 500 of us there.
Over 150 more than 2001! ~Cloud

One of the funniest things was that, while waiting for 8:00 to roll
around, I went looking for something to eat. I passed a couple of kids
and one was talking very excitedly to his sister, and he said, "Do you
know what's going to happen at eight?" I slowed down to listen, because
I figured that that was when the fireworks would start, but I was wrong.
He glanced over, pointed at me, and said, "All of THEM are going to be
HERE!" I thought, "Gee, I'm a 'them'!"

Welcome to them-hood, Megan! ~Cloud

Finally, at the end of the day, we got our souvenirs, candy, and
mouse-ears. Sunny got 'Nicholas' put on the back of hers. I left mine
blank-- I'm going to use my Mom's machine to put 'Bats Day' on them. We
went back to the motel and I packed and Ter took me airport. And the
next day, (Let's-scare-my-teachers-day) you all know about! <<G>>

I should probably explain that last comment for everyone on the list
that *doesn't* know!

I realized that my goth clothes were way bulkier than my travel clothes,
so I wore them home in order to free up space in my suitcase (except for
the boots-- I don't think the airport security would have gone for
that). When I got home, it was less than half an hour before my classes
were to start, so I drove straight to the school, put on the boots (if
you've got eight yards, you might has well have nine!) and went to
class. The LOOKS I got!
