I thought it had a good idea and could have worked,
but it just seemed to fall apart.  To me (again, my
opinion only) most of the episodes were unwatchable.
But there were a few that held my interest.  They were
(1) the one with the First Nations tracker, (2) when
Cole & another alien got captured by the government,
and of course, (3) Ger's episode with the girl healer.
 On the whole, I didn't like it, and if Ger's wasn't
in it, I never would have watched it.

I haven't seen all of the episodes yet, and I did (GASP) fall asleep during
last Friday's. Alas, since I am a Ger fan and an Adrian Paul fan I will
continue to watch. I think the show could have been written better, but some
of the eps I have seen are real good, in my opinion. Besides, where else can
you see Adrian Paul  standing on a bar, stripping!

wrist.  I took this to mean that Richard fed from his

Subject: Nick and the Civil War

Hi-
Being a bit of a Civil War buff, I decided to try to write a little
fic about Nick during the war.  As I was brainstorming, I came to a
bit of a quandry.  I had LaCroix ask Nick why he was getting involved
in this petty mortal conflict.  And then I started thinking....
  I know that UTV had Nick on the Union side and that's initially
where I thought he would be also, but as I thought more about it I
wasn't so sure.  Hence my fic is stuck....
 The immediate reaction would be to have Nick join the Union side
becuase he would want to help with the freeing of the slaves, etc.
 BUT, the Confederates were fighting for the idea of self
determination (not slavery, they actually abolished the international
trading of slaves in their constitution).  As I thought some more, it
kind of seemed that this fit more with Nick tring to free himself
from LaCroix.
 And serving on the side of union (to preserve the union and bring
the south back into the fold, so to speak) seems to lean more towards
LaCroix's point of view.
 Or... maybe I am just thinking too much into this.
 Sorry if this seems a little convoluted, but I have a whole bunch of
ideas swimming around in my head.  This simple fic has taken a more
complicated turn than I had expected.

release the series on DVD or allow another company, such as Anchor Bay, to

Somehow I think Nick would notice that banning the international
tradiing of slaves didn't prevent the south from buying and selling
the ones they already owned. I think he would view that as the same
sort of situation he was in with Lacroix, who after all thought he had
the power to control Nick's life, not unlike a plantation owner
controlled the lives of his slaves.

But what they wanted was the right to continue abusing the rights of
other human beings, and they resented being called on this gross
injustice. I think Nick would have welcomed a greater force reining in
Lacroix to prevent him from flinging Nick across the room yet again.

Anyway, Nick was wearing a Union uniform, so the discussion is moot.

Actually...

"On June 21, 2002, Blackstone Capital Partners acquired a majority interest
in Columbia House. The original partners, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner
Music continue to own minority interests in the company."

In other words, although they are not the current *primary* owner, Sony
*does* in fact continue to own an interest in Columbia House.  In the past
Sony was a primary owner.  Sony owns FK, and Sony owns a piece of Columbia
House.  Columbia House is the primary marketer of TV shows on DVD at the
present time.  Therefore, it makes sense to attack the issue via Columbia
House *in addition* to using the Sony webform.

FWIW, I've never seen any particular problems in the CH DVDs.  In fact, they
are about to begin offering Lexx, and I have confirmed with someone who works
for Acorn that CH's Lexx DVDs are actually one and the same as the Lexx DVDs
currently available in stores everywhere.  (For Nigel fans, Lexx season 3 is
already out on DVD and the first disc of season 4 is out, with the next due
out on 3/31.  Not sure if CH has added it to their lineup yet, but if not
they are about to.)

I think you raise a very good point here, Amanda. I can see that there
were likely number of factors that would make Nick identify with the
south in the war between the states. I do think though that you might
want to consider the factors that made Lincoln so determined to preserve
the Union, the idea that if the Union were to fail those ideas outlined
so eloquently in the Constitution might fail as well.

"That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that
government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish
from the earth."

I think that those are the ideas that would strongly draw Nick to the side
of the north in the conflict. I've forgotten at what point in the war UTV is
set, but perhaps the address at Gettysburg might be used as a springboard
for you.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. It was all quite trite and
superficial, with poorly-written scripts. They never explained key
concepts---how the AP character could construct an entire human from a
photo of a model on a billboard, for one. I mean, how'd he know what
was underneath those briefs? <g> And then there were the two
characters I wished were sucked into AP's little metal sphere
prison--the annoying Brit barmaid and the jive-talking black sidekick
who was a throwback to Starsky and Hutch's Huggy Bear. They were
straight out of the supply of cheesy stock secondary characters.

I'm afraid all I could think was, "What's Walter doing pretending to
be an Indian? Why isn't he in Section's armory?" (having been a fan of
Nikita).

I mainly played "spot the familiar Toronto filming locale" while
watching it and waiting for Ger to make his all-too-infrequent
appearances. AP is eye candy, but not the best actor in the world,
especially when he's trying to play comedy. Ah, well. So it goes.

Since Nick sees himself as Lacroix' slave, he would sympathize with the
Union cause. But his main goal would be to save lives as a surgeon, and

This was in, I believe, late 1863 or early 1864, so
coming up towards the later part of the war.  At that
point, there wouldn't be a whole lot of point in
joining up, as there was no question the South was
losing--it was just a matter of how soon.  Gettysburg
was arguably the turning point (though a case could be
made for Sharpsburg/Antietam being the point where the
South lost any hope) so by that time there wouldn't be
much call for Nick.

As for the North's noble motives, it's important to
remember a few things--Lincoln also said that if he
could get the South back into the Union by freeing all
the slaves, he'd do it.  If he could get it back
without freeing any slaves, he'd do it.  If he could
do it by freeing some slaves and leaving others in
bondage, he'd do that, too.  That's in fact what he
did--the Emancipation Proclamation ONLY affected
slaves residing in states then in "open rebellion"
against the Union.  Slaves in the border states like
Maryland were still property.  Lincoln was not a
diehard abolitionist or "civil rights" advocate--he
actually supported a plan that would ship as many
ex-slaves as possible to places like Liberia in
Africa.  As for most of the soldiers in the
Confederate army, few owned slaves or particularly
cared about it.  Of the senior officers, some were
strong proponents, and some (like Lee) could be
considered ambiguous about the practice.  The peculiar
institution was dying out anyway, and didn't require a
war, even if the Confederacy had succeeded in
splitting.

The bigger issue for Lincoln was the right of the
South to secede from the Union.  And the truth is
there's nothing in the US Constitution that says they
can't.  They were essentially two different
cultures--the agrarian South and the industrializing,
ubran North.  The South, rightfully, didn't like
getting dictated to.  Slavery ended up being the
hot-button issue, but even if there hadn't been
slavery, it would have been something else.  The real
winner in the Civil War was centeralized federal
government--the states lost a great deal of
self-determination.  *Neither* side had any sort of
moral high ground.  The South had slavery, the North
had draft riots and a few commanders who believed in
total war (see Sherman's March to the Sea.)  In highly
abolitionist areas, some people probably thought the
war was about slaves--but that's not what the
politicians running the war thought, or what the South
thought at all.

I think if Nick had been living in the North, he might
get taken in by the rhetoric about slavery, but like
most soldiers he would probably notice, very quickly,
that neither side has much of a leg to stand on when
it comes to being the side of the angels.  Both sides
did things that were brave and noble, and both sides
did things that were cruel and stupid.  He'd probably
get very sick, very fast, of watching people on both
sides suffer horrible deaths and maimings and disease
and starvation.  Nick has never struck me as someone
who enjoyed seeing others suffer, and that's what he'd
be getting 24/7 in either army.  I suspect he'd be in
for some major disillusionment, during the war and
after, when Lincoln's nice words about reunification
got turned into the very nasty system of
Reconstruction.  And I can just *hear* LaCroix saying,
"I told you so.  Humans never change."

Subject: FK Timeline Info Needed

I am looking for the timeline of Nick's whereabouts in his 800 years of
unlife for fanfic purposes.  Is there one published somewhere?  My poor
memory makes me think that one used to exist on the old Sony site - but that
has been defunct for a while.

I am specifically interested in the early 1800s.  Were Nick's adventures in
the American West more likely before or after the Civil War flashback?
Perhaps after and the murder spree, that caused a Wanted poster to be
printed, and the curare incident were LaCroix's way of getting back at Nick
for bringing the Enforcers down on their heads (yeah I know it was LC that
was photocopied but it was Nick who didn't want to kill the photographer).
If so is there canon to say where Nick was in the early 1800s?

What episode was this and did any countries get to see it?  i'd love to get

Someone said (don't remember who) <snip>Come to think of it, the cow blood
Nick gets from slaughter houses (we see him transfering it from a barrel to
bottles in a scene which was cut from the CBS versions) comes from dead cows,
so it sounds to me like the dead blood thing doesn't apply in FK.

And althought he didn't start that way, he helped the

I'm the one who said it. It's in one of the first season episodes. 1st season
episodes were longer in Canada than in the US because a difference in
regulations about how much commercial time is allowed per show allowed CBS to
cut scenes for their broadcasts.  Sometimes we merely lost interesting details
like this. At others we lost things like the fact that Nick came back and
discovered that his attempt to hypnotize Nat in Only the Lonely had _not_
worked. CBS also cut and pasted parts of two scenes together. Later we lost a
visit by Janette to the police station in another episode.  The discrepancy
emerged when Canadian Forkni-l members started talking about scenes and details
that we hadn't seen in the U.S.

Sci-Fi made its own cuts, which are not necessarily the same as the ones by CBS.

In the other two seasons, the shows were produced with U.S. syndication market
in mind and were the same length everywhere.
