I just had a run in with a nefarious pop-up ad from something called Extreme
Tracking. It did NOT have a close button, nor did right cliking bring one
up. I finally had to do the ctrl-alt-delete finger dance to get rid of the
darned thing. (can you tell I'm angry?) What I want to know is, are pop-up
ads something the site owner okays, or do they show up on their own? Cause
I won't visit an FK site that has one. (No, this was,thankfully, not an FK
site.)

Portions of the Kickstart the Knight, by way of necessity, have pop up ads.
In virtually all cases, ads aren't directly okayed by the site owner. That
is to say, they know there will be pop up ads when they sign up for the
webspace, but don't have control over what the ads are for. In the case of
Kickstart the Knight's site, since we don't have money to buy webspace, parts
of the site with large size files are on Fortunecity which has many
incredibly annoying pop up ads. (Other parts are on my AOL space, with no
pop ups.) Generally even ads that don't have a close button as part of the
ad do have the "-" for minimize and "X" to close in the upper right, which
are generated by Windows. Best bet with the KtK site is to choose minimize,
as they will come back if you close them, but will stay out of the way if
they're quietly running at the bottom of your screen. <G>

Isn't Nicolas just the French pronunciation of Nicholas? Wouldn't that be the
reason for LC calling Nick Nicolas in that instance? I'm sure if I went to
Italy I'd be called Graziella or Grazia. Another "when in Rome" example.

I've got a couple of FK tapes that I recorded in SLP way back when (before I
knew better). Can anyone tell me if I'd be better off just leaving them the
way they are, or copying the episodes onto new SP-recorded tapes? Both of my
VCRs are good quality, and I use high-quality connections (sound and video
in/out rather than a cable). Of course, I'd much rather re-tape them from
uncut, wide screen editions on Sci-Fi Channel, but I'm not holding my
breath...
A related question: one of my television tapes is, sadly, broken. As far as
I can tell, the only thing wrong is that the tape has come loose from one of
the reels. Is there any way to repair it?

Hi Janice! I've worked as a professional videotape operator/dubber/editor
for the past 17 years. Any dubbing you do, no matter how the technology has
changed ( unless you have professional Digital Betacam machines with
cloning capabilities) will lose quality if you copy from one source to
another. In my opinion, unless the actual SLP copies are physically
disintegrating, your best bet is to keep what you have because you can't
make a copy better.
A related question: one of my television tapes is, sadly, broken. As far as

the reels. Is there any way to repair it?
yes, beleive it or not, you can open the cassette along the seams if it's
glued or unscrew the screws. Scotch tape the end (neatly) back to the reel.
Manually take up some of the slack, put the cassette back together and dub
it to another tape. Don't keep the original to re-air with the tape repair
as the scotch tape can come off at a later time and ruin the heads in your
VCR.

It's the same name, of course, just that they had a convention of using Nicholas
when speaking English in the script) or "Nicolah" in French, plus Janette always
used it. So it's really not a new name. LaCroix just follows what used to be the
common European tradition of translating someone's given name into whatever
language is being spoken at the moment.
I'm not sure that the dropped final "s" in the French pronunciation had happened
yet in 13th c. French and/or in Brabantian dialect. I know the final unaccented
e in French wasn't lost until the 16th c. and is still pronounced when the
language is sung, at least in opera. In any case, Brabant is bi-lingual. The
modern province in Belgium (no, Nicholas is _not_ a Frenchman; Brabant was never
part of France, and the rest of it is now in the Netherlands) is majority
Flemish-speaking. In the 13th c., Nicholas's family would have spoken both the
local form of French and the local dialect of Netherlandic, the language which
eventually divided into modern Dutch and Flemish. In that language, the form
would have been more like "Nikolas" or "Nikolaus," with the final s pronounced.
They would have been used interchangeably, depending on who was speaking and
when.

Hey, except that it can't actually be a budgie, I like the idea of LC with a pet
named Nikolaus. Maybe it was a yellow dog -- that might be why (a) he was
attracted to Nick, with those blond curls and (b) why he has the delusion that
one of these days Nick will actually obey him, come when he calls, etc. ... :)

A similar question was brought up before when someone questioned the
pronunciation of La Croixian. It seemed to me at the time that because the
name was actually French and had a French pronunciation that perhaps in fell
outside the rules of English grammar and the x did not receive the English
pronunciation of ks. Could this be the same when making La Croix
possessive? Just a thought.
I have another question along that same line. I thought that there were no
gender related forms of words outside of pronouns in English. If this is
so, then why do we drop the e on blonde when referring to a male. Is this
the proverbial exception to the rule?

Actually the I believe both LaCroix' and LaCroix's are
correct, depending on whether you are using American
or British English. :: waves to Marel :: My preference
is for LaCroix', but it's just that, a preference.

LOL! It isn't really a dumbing down of culture by any means, just an evolution
of the language. Any living language will change as slang becomes acceptable as
"formal" language and obsolete words and meanings of words slip out of usage.
I have a BA in english with an emphasis on creative writing and use LaCroix's. I
worked for a newspaper for nearly 4 years, and I'm almost sure our "style" would
have used the 's even with an x. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen mention
an x doesn't need the s, but it comes up so rarely I'm not surprised.
Can you imagine all the changes in living languages that Nick and especially
LaCroix have seen? I wonder if they could slip back and forth doing dialects
and formal language from a former century until today? Or has the changes been
so gradual they really don't pay much attention to it unless a language totally
dies out.
Screed, of course, probably doesn't worry about such formality. 'E's jest
jammy-jamed through the cents-your-ways.

Well, a British person I've beta'd for writes "LaCroix's",
and I thought that was incorrect. I was told it was
correct for British English.

They wouldn't. The French don't indicate possession
with an apostrohe. Where we would say
"LaCroix' eyebrows"
The French would say
"Les sourcils de LaCroix."

I've always heard that both x' and x's are acceptable. I prefer x' myself,
but it confuses people sometimes. My family goes with x's (Cox's Folly,
etc.), just to confuse things further <g>. I've even seen it spelled Coxes',
a plural possessive. Ack! "The Lady LaCroixes' love letters are dipped in
arsenic." --this assuming that there could ever be more than one Lady
LaCroix. I doubt that there would be...for long.
Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" is silent on the issue. Microsoft
Word's spell check likes both, though of course it sees red over "LaCroix."
Do I sense a faction war a'brewing?? :-)
