I recently saw a commercial for a product that would be a natural for
a sponsor for FK (I forget what channel was on). It was for a tooth
whitener called "Forever White".

Also, please help me; I need a review. How do you arrange not to receive
war posts? Thanks!

yes we are playing. i set up a e-list at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FkWar11_DieHard-Indie so we can
discuss things.

Since the war-mistress has declared that independents had to play as
die-hards, both factions are covered by this one list.

We still need a faction leader; or at least someone willing to be on
the faction leader list (someone who has time and internet access
during the day would be good).

I just queried both lists but didn't see (or maybe
didn't understand) the commands for limiting topics.

Sorry to be so dumb, but how does one limit the FKFIC
topics to "War"? (Presumably the same command will
apply to FORKNI-L, a limitation I want to set when the
war gets going.)

Please DO reply on list because others may not know or
remember these commands.

Paste the following two lines into a message addressed to
<listserv@l.......>

set forkni-l topics: -war
set fkfic-l topics: -war

If you want to make sure you receive War posts use these tow lines

set forkni-l topics: +war
set fkfic-l topics: +war

Just to add something to what mclisa said, some people choose to
set their topics to "-other +war" so that they get ONLY the
war posts. So without war: in the subject line you might be
missing some of the audience that you wanted to target with your

Subject: WAR: Limiting Factions and Individuals

The number of posts during the last few wars has grown to unmanageable
levels. (Per McLisa.)

The number of factions has grown hugely in the past few wars, leading to more
and more posts. Limiting factions and independents is one method of trying to
get war posts back to reasonable levels.

Given that attacks cannot be refused, so many factions has also led to
situations where certain factions are 'overattacked." I know of one faction
that had seven attacks on their HQ last war. Since attacks cannot be ignored,
this faction ended up spending most of their time writing attack responses.

Posting levels is also the reason for restricting getting to TO posts to one
per faction.

The factions participating in war XI are quite diverse. Many individuals have
multi-faction interests, but pick one for the war. This does not mean they
ignore other factional loyalties; indeed, this conflict often leads to
interesting stories. Most participating factions are broad enough to reflect
diverse interests and opinions, and you're likely to find a few like-minded
individuals within. Say you think LaCroix and Janette should be together. As
a Cousin or a Raven, there's no reason why you can't develop a storyline
focusing on that relationship.

Just thought I'd share this, as I'd neglected it for a

Sony finally renewed the foreverknight.com domain in
May, but only for 1 year.

If they aren't going to do something more useful with
it, though, I wish they'd let it go. It'd be a great
jumping off page for the entire fandom.

Send a message to listserv@l....... with no signature or
subject and the command set forkni-l topics:-war. Don't put in
the period and don't try to give the command by replying to this
or any other post from the list. For Fkfic-l, do the same thing
with that listname.

Please also remember that if you can't get something to work,
just write to me and I can do it for you.

If you are on Fkfic-l, and aren't sure about your settings, the
simplest thing to do is to set your options again. If you
already have the setting you want, you will get a listserv
message saying that the option is already in effect.

Send a message to the same address, and substitute the name
Fkfic-l for Forkni-l. To set your options so you get the war,
give the command set fkfic-l topics:+war.

Please forgive an oversensitive and at the moment overworked by
RL :) listowner but I did give this information last week.
Should I make a point of sending it at intervals until the war
is over?

Thanks.

Yes! That's a great idea. Assuming they will let us use it. I
mean, other fandoms have sites that are actually maintained like that
-- startrek.com, for example.

I've recently seen .co advertised (It's actually the Columbia domain
name), but some companies are snatching it up because people make
typos and forget the m in com. That's another idea.

Thought this might be of interest concerning the TPTB.

The SCI FI Channel has promoted Thomas P. Vitale to senior vice president,
acquisitions, scheduling and program planning. Most recently, Vitale was
vice president of acquisitions and scheduling, a position he had held since
early 2000. In his new position, Vitale will add program planning to his
responsibilities, while continuing to oversee the network's aggressive
buying and scheduling efforts.

fine. Another way is the same message to listserv@l.......
with no subject or signature, and the command set forkni-l
topics:war. Don't put a period at the end. When you give a
topics command without the plus or minus sign, it sets your
topics so that you get _only_ the one in the command.

I think this is a good idea. This reminds me of a road rally - as much as
everyone loves the organized chaos and we all think, "the more the merrier,"
at some point you have to stop accepting applications or it turns into one
big traffic jam. Is that an analogy?

I'd have preferred to play with Caddywhacks in War 9 but there were not enuff
Cads available to have a faction. So I played with the Ravens. And hey, the
Ravens were more than happy to let me go steal the car and joyride around
town in it. For newer factions, or very small groups, find a crowd that is
in some way tangent to your special interest. Our faction asked everyone
upfront, 'tell me if any of you has a special war fantasy you want to play
out' and we did our best to accomodate, ambushes notwithstanding. In the
end, if you are crazy enuff to write it, the deed is done.

And for newbies and for those "concerned" about the War/WM semantics limiting
their fun pleeeeease remember; war online is very difficult to explain. I
remember readiing the instructions the first time and thinking, and I
paraphrase here, "#%&*(^$#&()^!!!!!?????????!" So if you *haven't* played,
don't sweat it. It really does work. If you *have* played before, don't you
sweat it either because it works and you should know that already.

(Rah rah cheerleading section of post :)
   Remember -
The premise is not there to *control*, it is merely an excuse to party in
TO.
The premise is there to inspire you, not tire you.
The premise helps you take off, not be put off.
The WM is *not* there to rap your knuckles every five minutes, only there
to throw cold water on you if you post a story that sounded really great
after 6 days without sleep and <omig> it was 4 a.m. Sat. morning and gee that
seemed like a really good idea at the time and what was I thinking and in the
end thank goodness the WM has cosmic vampiric powers over time and space and
can reverse time and undue the post and once I sober up or wake up or quit
drinking so much Ribena before the sun is up over the yardarm I'll be
grateful she did. After 7 days of war, this is exactly the sort of insane
drivel your brain will churn out, too. And you are not getting rapped for
story "plots" but for violating protocols that keep the timeline and civility
flowing like the Rhine.

And some groups just use the premise as a cover for whatever dasturdly
deeds they intend to commit. I don't think the Mercs ever even tried to find
Nat's notebook in War 9. I think they spent to whole time in their basement
tormenting the RP and doing cloning experiments. So don't get all bent
outta joint about the premise.

This is probably an old topic y'all discussed ages ago
since this book was published in 1999, but I was
looking up Susan Sizemore of "A Stirring of Dust" on
Amazon and discovered she has a vampire series
starting with "The Hunt." This novel stars an
"Enforcer"--one of the force vampires allowed to kill
another vampire and enforce the laws of the group.
She took not just the concept but the term itself!

How well DOES Sony protect its franchise? Or do such
details belong to the original creators? Was she
given special dispensation? Or can vampire DJ's,
vampire cops and so on find their way into published
fiction with the same ease?

I was so surprised, I jumped right onto my e-mail. I
have to read the reviews to see if anyone picked up
the FK similarities.

For one thing, FK is not original with vampire cops. PN Elrod technically had a
vampire cop before FK (if I recall correctly, the book was written before the
series but the series came out first - or something like that). But there was
another writer whose name escaped me that had a vampire cop before PN Elrod but
"Pat" was not aware of it when she wrote hers.

"The Enforcers" is such a generic term, unless TPTB copyrighted it, and I'm sure
it would stand up in court as it IS a generic term, it is up for grabs IN MY
OPINION (I could be wrong). Anyone who enforces laws or rules could technically
be called "an enforcer" and it be good grammar.

TPTB *does* protect its copyright. We're lucky as they do let us keep our fan
fiction and other fannish playing as long as we don't market things as "FK
novel" or something that sounds more official.

Hope that helps.

I do find it interesting that, according to my own research on
copyright law, names (with a few notable exceptions like Prince's
character signature) cannot be copyrighted. Technically, you could
have a "Nick Knight" in a novel, as long as he wasn't an 800 year old
blonde vampire from Brabant with a sire named LaCroix. The character
would have to be remarkably different to avoid being sued, IIRC.

True. the supreme court just ruled yesterday that a sequel to Gone with the
wind could be published against the copywrite holder's permission. That the
freedom of speech clause now even applies to using copywrited characters. So
Now by the ruling, I could write a book about nick and the enforcers, and have

It isn't quite that simple. I haven't looked up the actual ruling yet, but in
this case, the "Gone WIth the Wind" 'rip off' was apparently a parody sort of
situation. You still can't just use a writer's characters and expect not to be
sued.

For example, you might be able to write about a cop named Nick in Toronto, but
if you made him a vampire, even if you didn't use the "Forever Knight" name,
Sony could and probably would sue as there most likely would be obvious
similarities that WOULD target it as a copyright violation. And if you crossed
a FK story with a novel, you could still be sued.

Copyright is very confusing, even for professional writers (I am one). I'm fuzzy
on the no copyrighted names clause, but I believe that is true as I remember one
of my college writing instructors saying one of his first published short
stories was called "Diary of Anne Frank" but had absolutely nothing to do with
the famous diary, other than name, so it was not a copyright violation (though
it could be confusing to readers).

Now, I could take a rat eating vampire and set it in Toronto and not be
violating copyright ... but let's say if I made him bald and named him Screed,
Sony probably would have good cause to be suspicious.

Someone else mentioned distancing FK fanfic from FK and having it published
professionally as a totally non-FK story. Don't ask me to name what stories, but
I believe this has happened or at least attempts have been made to do so. This
is why some fan fic writers will ask for stories to be removed from archives. I,
personally, have so many original ideas, I wouldn't probably ever get around to
turning one of my fanfic stories into a professional one, but I have used ideas
I've had for professional stories for fanfic, and vice versa.
