I'm worried about the tone I'm hearing on list. Guys, if things are going to
be unpleasant when we're merely discussing things prior to the war, I have
to worry if there should be a war. Everybody calm down and be nice on
Forkni-l, or I may have no option but to call off the war as far as the PSU
lists are concerned.

So, now, deep breath and start talking to each other as you would want to be
talked to yourself.

McLisa,

thanks for the reminder that we're normally civil with each other.

I do worry though that the tone is escalating because people don't feel
they're being listened to and that their opinions aren't considered
important. I know that a war is not really a democracy and that the WM has
to have the final say or there really will be chaos. However, I sent what I
thought was a very polite question about the reasons for the requirement
that only factions that have previously played in a war can participate in
this one and whether there might be an alternative (having war-experienced
leaders of inexperienced factions) if the premise doesn't require only
experienced factions. I haven't gotten an answer. This makes me one of
those people who wonder if my concerns are of any importance.

I know I'm already sort of hoping that the faction I'm planning on playing
with is barred because no one can prove we've played before. Obviously, I
can just opt out even if we can play, but I really don't want to do that. I
enjoy wars and was looking forward to participating.

Sorry to dump this on you, but I'm just trying to find some way to be sure
the WM understands how some people may feel about all of this without
risking sending her what might be considered a flame.

Whiningly yours,

Barb

As a participant of War #7, let me just say here that there was a premise -- to
fix the mess TPTB left us at the end of Last Knight. And that premise was
followed. If I recall correctly -- and it's been a good many years -- the
Vaqueros resurrected Vachon, the mercs dug up Screed, the Perkulators (before
Dark Pink was a fashionable color) spent the entire war searching for Tracy, a
multi-factional group came together to steal/save/revive/liberate Urs from
LaCroix's attempt to play mad scientist, the Natpackers got to Natalie just in
time to rush her to the hospital, the Knighties convinced Nick it wasn't all his
fault, and I forget what the Cousins did, but I'm sure it was something
cunningly evil having to do with cow costumes.

So, when all was said and done -- and, yes, that took us two whole weeks! -- the
premise was followed and satisfied. In the end, there was a big party with lots
of soap suds from washing Nick's caddie and everyone had a great time!

>And since I was under the impression that all WM were first timers,
>aren't they all inexperienced?

I think what she meant by first-timer was a war mistress who had never played an
FK war before. Reading the wars are one thing, playing is something you can
only experience! I can see what an huge responsibility it could be, and I don't
envy any WM the job!

>Try forbidding these kinds of thing in a war, you run the risk of
>turning a lot people off to the war. I sincerely hope you aren't
>aiming for that deliberately.

I don't think the WM is not forbidding "these kinds of things." She's only
saying, just keep in mind why we're all virtually heading to Toronto. There's
gonna be a premise, a story to get us going, a reason to pack our virtual
suitcases, hop that virtual plane, and have a big slumber party on Nick's floor,
or Vachon's floor, or where ever.

Whatever the premise is, I'm sure there will be lots of room in which to write
all kinds of posts. Actually, it seems to me, that the premises in the past
which appeared most restricting brought out the best in our creativity.

Without knowing the premise, it's difficult to know if you can work with it, but
I think it's worth waiting for, mulling over, seeing what happens. There are
dozens and dozens of people participating and I'm sure, as always, there will be
brilliant posts and memorable moments, gut-splittingly funny scenes, and, if
you're lucky, you'll make some new friends! That's been my experience as a
verteran of three of the past four wars.

>Maybe I'm reading you wrong, but I feel you are coming off as if you
>basically have a story idea that you expect a bunch of other FKfans
>to write for you, without straying one iota outside where you think
>the plot should go. This definitely *NOT* what a war should be.

You are over simplifying what the WM is saying. While the war resembles a round
robin, it also resembles a big bus full of people all talking at once.

Say, for example, the WM is the bus driver and she told us to talk about the
summer peach harvest in Georgia. Well, there are just about a billion things
which can be said about the summer peach harvest in Georgia while still
remaining on topic and with everyone talking at once, you can bet that all
billion of those topics will be covered -- some seriously, some humorously, some
by throwing said Georgia peaches from that summer harvest at some other folks
who were talking about LaCroix's peach speech from "Last Knight."

Believe me, if the WAR MISTRESS wanted a specific story with a fixed plotline
written by someone else, she wouldn't hire a hundred random people with widely
different viewpoints and character leanings to accomplish the project. Now, if
she wanted an anthology of related stories based on a specific premise, written
by collaborating groups, well, heck, that we can do!

>
>I have read the other posts.
>So far nothing you or anyone else has said has shaken my initial

The WM is here to help us, guide us, keep us from over-throwing the Canandian
government during our virtual visit to TO (hey, that's not a bad idea, er, sorry
... I digress). If you've read the past wars, you can see how varied the posts
are, how creative the writers can be. The premise is the starting point, point
A, and it's telling us we need to get to some point B. It's not telling us how
to get there. But, if we oughta be heading north and we're heading south, then
the war mistress is gonna let us know before we hit the Panama Canal.

>As for being comfortable with the premise and the rules; since you
>haven't yet posted the premise, no one can form an opinion of it; and
>since the only rule I've really noticed is all posts most connect to
>the premise, it makes it rather hard for me to feel comfortable with
>that rule.

You'll have to wait on the premise, like the rest of us. But, the rules are
pretty simple: read the premise and keep it in mind when writing posts, attacks
are the sincerest form of flattery, in the end everything FK must go back to the
way it was at the beginning so don't give Vachon a crew cut on the very last
day. ;-) Oh, and, most important, remember it's not really war -- you're
supposed to have fun.

And it is fun. Whether you love the premise or hate the premise, that's beside
the point. If you're clever and/or willing, you can work with it. Just keep an
open mind. Hope for the best, join a faction with folks you like, and have good
time!

Two questions that I don't *think* have been
specifically answered--

1. Is there a War 11 website (couldn't find one doing
an Internet search? If not, will there be?

2. A Diehard-Indie Yahoo list has been set up
(although someone pointed out that those are two
different definitions of FK fans, they do seem to have
attitudes in common). Is such a group going to be
allowed to play?

Barb's post on the fact that having questions and
needing answers is not synonymous with wanting to be
unpleasantness struck a chord with me.

OOPS. Obviously this was supposed to go privately. However, since I
managed to not change the address and the message wound up here, I want to
be sure that No one especially Gwyneth thinks this was meant to be in any
way a flame. I'm obviously concerned about some of the rules that were
stated and would like more of an explanation for them.

However, I also support The WM's right to set the rules and enforce them.
If they mean that I can't play that's what will happen.

I apologize for sending a message that may have inadvertently offended
Gwyneth or any of her war staff.

Gwyneth, I want to apologize to you specifically. I truly don't want you or
anyone else to think that I don't respect your rules or your ability to set
up an run a war that everyone will enjoy. I hope you will accept my
comments in the way they were meant - as a very poor attempt to understand
and become more comfortable with the purpose of the rules.

I second Eve on that one. I'm soon to become a Canadian citizen and if you
over-throw our government I have to start all over again and believe me,
filling out that dang application form and writing the test is harder than
10 FK wars bundled together.

It's been two years since we had an FK War. Let's give the
Warmistress a chance before an air of nonspecific acrimony
takes hold.

<Hey! Don't look at me like that ... I was good for ... um ... at
least a couple of days into War X.... >

I guess I'm coming at this from the point of view that an FK War
is a voluntary exercise in *communal* short-term insanity. When
the War Premise is overlooked, the result is, IMO, a lot of <euphemism
alert> self-gratification, which is the very opposite of a communal
undertaking.

So why not take it easy, hear what the Warmistress proposes, and
then decide what each of us wants to do? Personally, I'm eager to
have a Premise that is workable and gives us all a chance to play
into it.

I'm so concerned about this that I don't know whether to war or not! On the
pro side, I have a great faction to War with, and a small one, so that I can
actually participate and be helpful. On the con side, I have to say, trying
very hard to be polite, that Gwyneth's posts have been...well, a little
off-putting.

What I would like cleared up is:
1) Is the WM proposing a 'plot' or a 'premise'? Earlier, it sounded like
she was proposing a plot and that we must all stick closely to it. IMO, the
premise should be broad enough that we can all be ourselves and have fun,
and it should not pit one group of factions against another.
2) Why is it necessary for Independents to play as Die-Hards? They may not
be comfortable within a faction they may not already have a rapport with.
3) I've received an email from a newbie friend who isn't sure that she
wants to play now, given the rancorous tone of discussion on this list, and
frankly, I don't know what to tell her...is this the type of War we should
expect? If so, I have a lot of projects already backed up that and if I
can't anticipate a cheerier atmosphere, I'd rather work on those.

I think Barb said it very well: >>I do worry though that the tone is
escalating because people don't feel they're being listened to and that
their opinions aren't considered important.<<

That's how I feel. I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible, but I am
concerned.

BOnnie Kate had some good words for us. I've yet to see a War where there
wasn't a big uproar to begin with. Some people always drop out, but most play
and have a fantastic time. There's no way to please everyone with a premise

Subject: Come on now, let's ease up on our WarMistress!

Gang;

I'm not the ListMommy or ListDaddy or ListGardner or anyone of any official
capacity on the list, but I _have_ been around for a while (1994 - it feels
like forever :-) ), and believe me, from some of the complaining I've seen
about the WarMistress, let's all try to realise that she has a VERY
demanding job (it doesn't even pay a salary, geez!), and she's genuinely
trying to do well by everyone. I don't know her personally, but I get the
feeling from what I've seen that she's doing her very best.

The next time any listmembers want to suggest she's not a good WarMistress
(not that anyone's said that specifically, but...), they should consider
whether they could actually do the job themselves; that should change their
perspective considerably!

She's only started her job, so let's give her some time to prove herself.
Let's not judge her _too_ harshly, especially considering that there is
_one_ past WarMistress who in my estimation was the absolute worst ever,
i.e., she was both a faction leader AND the WarMistress (not that anything
is necessarily wrong with that in itself, but...), and on several occasions
during this particular unnamed War, disqualified several of my posts after
writing to me AS A FACTION LEADER saying that (paraphrased) "I'm going to
dispute your posts to the WarMistress", conveniently not bothering to
mention that such a "dispute" would be a fait accompli because she was
disputing them TO HERSELF! I think that it must have been some sort of bad
blood because I dared to make some friendly fun of the fact that her
faction's opening post in the War, claimed that the War had begun in
"Toronto, Quebec" (as most of us know, it's in _Ontario_, not Quebec; as
such, my posts in response attempted to link her faction with a fictional,
Quebec separatist militia group that rather delusionally claimed that the
rest of Canada belonged to Quebec! It was just a joke, geez!!!).

So...after considering _this_, believe me, I'm almost absolutely sure that
this WarMistress will be MUCH better than THAT one! Come on, let's ease up
on her and let her do her job.

Incidentally ... I've often entertained the notion of asking/trying to
become the first non-WarMISTRESS (as far as I know, they've all been
women?), but then I've realised just how much work is really involved! For
someone who's renowned (more like notorious!!) for responding to mail at
"The Speed of Will" (hint to anyone who doesn't know what this means: if
there were such a thing as the mathematical inverse of the Speed of Light,
that's people talking about poor old me responding to mail! :-) ), there's
no way that I'd ever be able to handle it. And with a baby on the way, I'm
just going to have to wait another 15-20 years before putting my name in the
hat. Will for WarMaster of War 31 in 2021 anyone??? :-)

Libs is right. I've played in War 2 and all Wars since #5; I've been one
of the heads of Cerberus (i.e., Cousins co-leader) since War 7. It's a War
tradition for there to be lots of grumbling about premises and conditions
of play. In War 8, there was a lot of worry about AU characters and
non-traditional control of characters, but it turned out to be one hell of
an entertaining ride. Let's give it a chance, folks -- see how things
develop. You could be pleasantly surprised.

That should have had a War: heading? Or is that only for the War stories
themselves?

YES! *all* war postings are suppose to have a War: heading. Please, folks,
let's follow that rule before McLisa gets all mean n' stuff ;-)

Just a reminder -- if your post is about the upcoming war, you
must begin your subject line with the word war and a colon.

Like this: war:

The colon _has_ to be there. It's what makes the word a topic.
Otherwise the post will go to everyone, not just those who want
to hear about the war.

It doesn't matter whether the word war is capitalized or not.

But you MUST use the colon.

Thanks.

Subject: War: It's a tough job but thank goodness someone does it!

Yesterday was my 30th birthday. My first thought reading
mail this morning was 'Well, I may be 30, but at least I'm not
WarMistress.' :D

Like The Other Bonnie said, being WarMistress is a huge job.
Catching up on posts from the past week or so, I'm
extra thankful right now that I don't have the responsibility.

Being WM is also a very thankless job, because, as with many things,
there's no way she can satisfy everyone. The war
is played by individuals (Yes, this is a good thing), and
sometimes the individuals are going to express conflicting
views on what the war guidelines should be. It's just not
going to be humanly possible for the WM to answer every concern
in a way that's going to please every player.

I'm very glad that's she's doing it, though. The WM has opened
herself up to criticism and taken on the burden of seeing this
job through with McLisa and Don's help so that we can have
another War. Compared to the way I would respond in a similar
situation, she's been enormously fairminded in her feedback.
I'm impressed, and I appreciate even more that she has the job.

On top of that, I'm excited. It's been a long time since
we've played a war, and I know I'm going to enjoy whatever
part I play in it because I'm surrounded by my virtual friends.
