Has anyone ever pinpointed an approximate date for
Nick's birth or was it ever implied in any ep?
Supposing that Nick was 30ish when he was brought
across, that would place his DOB around the
mid-to-late 1190s. If this were to be the case, then I
think it unlikely that he would have participated in a
Crusade in 1208. I've always thought it most likely
that he took part in the Fifth Crusade (IIRC the Sixth
Crusade dates somewhere around 1228, therefore not
enough time would have elapsed for him to participate
in that Crusade and return before being brought
across).

However, the crusade against the Albigensians lasted
well past this date. The final battle against this
"heretical sect" was waged at Montségur in 1244.
Whether or not Nick was involved in any of the battles
with the Cathars is open to debate, but I think it
could have been possible.

Subject: A Possible Answer to LK?

Idly watching the trailers while waiting for the news to start this evening,
I suddenly woke up when the voiceover for British cop show "The Bill" went
something along these lines:

"Nick Klein is doing a job he loves. (On screen image of a uniformed
British bobby...) A job he really believes in. The trouble is, his father
doesn't approve...."

Kezia's imagination promptly goes into overdrive and comes up with: Nick
and LaCroix are - more or less - reconciled, enough to be living as father
and son, in South London, using the surname of Klein. Nick is now a
uniformed officer (a 'bobby') with the Metropolitan Police Force, working
out of Sun Hill station in the south of London....

Okay... I'll buy it! There's just one thing annoying me.... I only live 30
miles from London, and I was there *yesterday*. Aaack! Typical, isn't it?
(And does this mean I now have to start watching The Bill?)

Kezia, perplexed by her own wierd imagination...

I'm afraid you'll just have to put up with my occassional flights into
reality

Not necessarily. If we assume Nick is about 35 or so in 1228 he could have
participated. He may not have been old enough in 1208 but that doesn't mean
wasn't sent sometime in between. It was my impression that the incident in
QoH took place when he was still fairly young. Around age 18 or 20. This
would place the year he was sent between 1213 and 1215. Even with the
lengthy travel time of the era he would have had plenty of time to make it to
the Holy Land.

<snicker> I can buy it---except that I just can't see Lacroix assuming the
name "Klein", which is German for "small." C'mon, would he consent to being

"Vires Per Virtutem"

If I Ever Become an Evil Overlord:

1.. My legions of terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not
face-concealing ones.

2.. My ventilation ducts will be too small to crawl through.

3.. My noble half-brother whose throne I usurped will be killed, not kept
anonymously imprisoned in a forgotten cell of my dungeon.

4.. Shooting them swiftly is *not* too good for my enemies.

5.. The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the
Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of
Eternity. It will be in my safe-deposit box.

6.. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.

7.. When the rebel leader challenges me to fight one-on-one and asks, "Or
are you afraid without your armies to back you up?" my reply will be, "No,
just sensible."

8.. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me,
will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll shoot him, and then
say "No".

9.. After I kidnap the beautiful princess, we will be married immediately in
a quiet civil ceremony and I will consume the marriage on the spot, not wait
for a lavish spectacle in three weeks time during which the final phase of
my plan will be carried out.

10.. I will not include a self-destruct mechanism unless absolutely
necessary. If it is necessary, it will not be a large red button labelled
"Danger: Do Not Push".

11.. I will not order my trusted lieutenant to kill the infant who is
destined to overthrow me -- I'll do it myself.

12.. I will not interrogate my enemies in the inner sanctum -- a small hotel
well outside my borders will work just as well.

13.. I will be secure in my superiority. Therefore, I will feel no need to
prove it by leaving clues in the form of riddles or leaving my weaker
enemies alive to show they pose no threat.

14.. I will not waste time making my enemy's death look like an accident:
I'm not accountable to anyone and my other enemies wouldn't believe it.

15.. I will state clearly I do know the meaning of the word "mercy"; I
simply choose not show them any.

16.. One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in
my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation.

17.. All slain enemies will be cremated, not left for dead at the bottom of
the cliff. The announcement of their deaths, as well as any accompanying
celebration, will be deferred until after the aforementioned disposal.

18.. My undercover agents will not have tattoos identifying them as members
of my organization, nor will they be required to wear military boots or
adhere to any other dress codes.

19.. The hero is not entitled to a last kiss, a last cigarette, or any other
form of last request.

20.. I will never employ any device with a digital countdown. If I find that
such a device is absolutely unavoidable, I will set it to activate when the
counter reaches 117 and the hero is just putting his plan into operation.

21.. I will design all doomsday machines myself. If I must hire a mad
scientist to assist me, I will make sure that he is sufficiently twisted to
never regret his evil ways and seek to undo the damage he's caused.

22.. I will never utter the sentence "But before I kill you, there's just
one thing I want to know."

23.. When I employ people as advisors, I will occasionally listen to their
advice.

24.. I will make sure to have had sufficient therapy to no longer suffer
from "unconscious self sabotage".

I think the Crusade most fitting Nick's timeframe would be the Fifth
Crusade. I'm not going to give a summary of it here, because it was rife
with political maneuvering and I don't want to be responsible for nearly
1,000 headaches, *but*:

In November of 1219, the Egyptian city of Damietta was seized by the
Crusaders; on September 8, 1221, it was retaken by the Egyptians/Arabs. So,
in 'Last Act', when Erica speaks of seeing Nick wounded and nearly dead in a
Moorish castle, he could have been wounded during the re-conquest of
Damietta.

Now, why it took him seven years to make it to Paris...?

You need three. One with golden wool on its top, the second with white
Q-tip fuzz, and the third with black wool. Makes a Dark Trinity. <eg>
Or find a Weebles Wobble set that supplies a stethoscope (Nat), an Elvis wig

I third this! <waves at Susan G.> Six months ago, someone I loved receive
multiple units of blood. I was ineligible to donate because I was

Being a donor can have fringe benefits beyond tea and cookies-- a couple of

Subject: You Know You've...

This is actually more like "You Know Your Cousin Has Been Watching Too Much
FK When..."

I first noticed something was going on when Michael began using the phrase
"When I was your age..." Not so very unusual, I suppose--except for the fact
that Michael is eleven and I'm, well, twice that. Finally my curiosity got
the better of me and I took the bait. "When you were my age?" The little
fellow nodded sombrely. "Of course," he added, "that *was* almost eight
hundred years ago..."

Hmmm.

Since then his behaviour has begun to take on a strangely familiar pattern.
I just had to share some of this:

He now asks friends to call him Mike. Only immediate family is allowed to
refer to him as Michael.

He likes to keep sport bottles of cranberry soda in the fridge, and every so
often he will come into the kitchen, uncap one with his teeth, and chug it.

Sunglasses. Even in the house. Even at night.

He drenches *everything* in either ketchup or barbecue sauce before he eats
it.

He wants music lessons. More specifically, piano lessons.

If displeased, he will hiss at you and bare his teeth when he thinks you're
not looking (he did it to me just now).

And finally, the other night he asked if I'd mind if he borrowed a book off
my shelf. When I agreed, he grabbed one and scuttled off, proudly clutching
"Intimations of Mortality".

Some members of the family are a little concerned, but I'm not. It could be
a lot worse... my cousin could be a Cousin. *evil grin*

All right, I've wasted everyone's time enough. ;)

Eve.

All of them do---with the exception of those like Ashes to Ashes that

because the show Nick as he was before, how he 'fell', why he chose that

Dance by the Light of the Moon <--- shows Janette seducing Nick into

Killer Instinct <--- shows Nick's first days as a vampire and LaCroix
teaching him skills
Queen of Harps <--- focuses on his mortal life (pre-vampire)

When Nick and Vachon first met, Nick acted like an elder and
seemed to expect Vachon to do what he said. And Vachon didn't
seem to have a serious issue with Nick's attitude.
Whether that is due to the fact that Nick is something like twice
his age or whether Vachon understood Nick's protective attitude
toward Tracy and didn't wish to needlessly aggravatate Tracy's

Subject: Nick's Age

Warning! Heavy-duty assumptions ahead! <G>

Since Ger is capable of playing younger than his age, and since a
35-year-old man in the Middle Ages may have looked, to us, a little bit
older than a modern 35-year-old looks, I'm assuming he was between 29 and 33
when he was brought across. Since many Catholics were (and are) named after
the saint's day they were born on, I'm speculating that Nick's birthday was
<drum-roll, please> December 6th, 1195.

I always assumed --can't remember why --that he'd been captured, and it
could've taken years for his family to sell off land and possessions to raise
the punitive ransom. It might explain why the Brabant stately pile looked as
bare of furnishings as Harrods after the January sales. <g> In the dim,
distant days when I studied the Crusades at college, one of the finest books
on the subject was authored by Stephen Runciman: scholarly, but very vivid
and accessible.

Subject: Re: My Two Cents' Worth on the Book Situation...

Add my penny and we have 3 cents.

I don't know what is happening with this book, either, but I am
curious.

I think this is the same project that I was helping Lady Sukh out
with by editing a FK episode guide. I have very detailed copies for
most of season 1 and 3 and a chunk of 2.

Lady Sukh abruptly got into a bind where I understood that folks
had fallen through in writing episodes for the guide as they were
trying to wrap things up to get to the printer. I offered to help with
whatever I could and told her to get a list of the episodes she
needed done to me and I would get them ASAP.

I did a few and then lost touch with her after asking what else
needed to be done.

I have attempted a couple of times to re-establish contact with no
luck.

During our conversations, I remember she spoke of medical
problems (her back??). I have assumed that she was ill or that real
life was interfering.

If anyone knows the Lady personally, I for one would appreciate
just a blip of an e-mail that says she is well if all that is happening
is a time-crunch.

If the entire project fell through, I would like to discuss with her the
possibility of distributing the chunks of the guide I have into the list.
They would make fantastic pieces for Knight School, but since I
didn't create them by my own single effort, I don't wish to turn them
free since they represent work that people aside myself did for
reasons that might not match my own.

So, if anyone knows Lady Suhk, please find if she is still OK and
let her know that the crew would appreciate hearing from her at her
earliest convenience.
    :-)
