Has the list been real slow?? I had one piece of mail on 12/24/00 and then
two more on 12/27/00. Nothing else. Are we all celebrating the Holidays for
our computers?
Happy Holidays All if we are.

Haven't gotten much mail either, except for the fic list. Season's greetings.

Question for a fanfic: Exactly how long does it take the typical fledling to
gain enough control to go outside without his/her sire's presence nearby?

Thanks in advance.

It's not just this list. I'm on about 50 different fk or fk related lists
that are all slow. Things just pickup the first week of January.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and has a Happy New Year!

I think there is no canonical answer for this, so it's however you see it. In
my version of the FKverse, young vampires are prone to excessive impulsiveness
and unihibitedness for quite a while -- in one story, I have LaCroix say that
Janette is finally out of her "terrible twos," meaning 2 centuries. I think the
first decade would be a time to keep a pretty close eye, though I wouldn't think
they couldn't be let out of sight of a careful master. I expect, however, that
most masters aren't as careful as LaCroix would have been with his special two
fledglings. Never tried to figure out why I think all of this, but if I had to
analyze it, I guess I would say it would be a good explanation (among others)
for how Nicholas could so quickly embrace a homicidal lifestyle, and why it took
so long for him to start really questioning it. Also, if you think about it,
more complex/intelligent species (who also tend to have longer life spans) tend
to have offspring with longer dependence. Considering how long vampires live,
and how complex the physical changes must be for their development, they
probably take quite a while to mature.

Just my 2 cents worth speculation! "g"

I've gotten tons of e-mails from FK friends wanted to check on my status, as
well as the other FK fans in Arkansas, following our horrible ice storm. Those
in the US have probably seen pictures on the news. My office opens at 10 a.m.
today, but I came in earlier to warm up and check my e-mail! <g>

I've been without power since Tuesday night at 7 p.m. I have NO alternate source
of heat (gas heat but the electricity has to be on for the fan to work). My
parents live fairly near me, but were out of electricity until late last night.

I've been keeping warm with lots of blankets, a sleeping bag, and at least one
of my two cats on me at every given time. (The tom cat has decided the female
doesn't "deserve" to sleep on me so he's monopolizing the warm "Momma.)

I came in to work today to check my e-mail and keep warm!

The only other one of the Arkansas contigent I've heard from is Susan "supaige"
Pierce. She's fine and with power. She was at her parents when this hit
Christmas Eve, but was able to safely get back home yesterday. She called to
check on me (at least I still have phone connection, or did when I left home
this morning). I'm sure the others are okay as well, though I won't swear they
have power.

Many of you may have seen "Hot Springs" footage on the news with ice an inch
thick on Magnolia trees. I live sort of between Hot Springs and Little Rock in
Benton (NOT Bentonville, home of Walmart, which is up in the Northwest of the
state - I'm in Central Arkansas). Anyway, what you're seeing on the news is what
it looks like around my house. Trees and utility lines down everywhere.

Blessed are the utility workers who are braving the cold, live wires, and
falling trees 24-hours a day to get heat and power back to us! Cursed be those
who are cursing these men and women who are doing a FANTASTIC job in almost
impossible conditions!

Imagine a world made out of fragile glass. The slightest breeze can bring a tree
collapsing. A whisper seems capable of bringing down an ice coated utility line.
The wind blowing through the limbs sounds like delicate glass prisms tinkling
against each other - through the world's most powerful amplifier.

If I'm still out tonight, I'll either sleep at my parents (who have power as of
late last night) or my father is going to bring over his kerosene heater to warm
whatever room I decide to sleep in, although I'll have to turn it off before
going to sleep.

I think even LaCroix's heart would grow colder under these conditions!

Hi Everyone:

I was wondering if anyone knows the year in which the episode "Forward into
the Past"'s flashback sequence takes place? Thanks for the info!

Sincerely,

David
