Ah, that was it!
Although, I viewed that scene a bit differently. They
could survive longer after starvation overtook them all,
but what sort of survival?
LC said that while most of the younger ones would
starve and die, the ancient ones would "linger" for
some while afterward.
I rather took this lingering to mean that the older ones would be in
some rather horrid state: aware but not really alive, not really dead.
Truly, a permanent hell.
So while the younger ones might eventually turn to dust,
the older ones, having had more time for the vampire element to
alter their cells, wither on the vine but never quite go poof.
And maybe one needs more blood to sustain such powerful cells in
the first place? Just a little theory of mine....
Kind of reminds me of a friend who's quite into
fitness and body-building. Of course, he's stronger
and better fit than I, and would probably survive
illness or hardship longer, but dang -- he eats non-stop and
if he misses a meal ... it's not pretty. <g>
