Subject: Nick and the religious nature of the Mayan Cup

I'm reaching here, but I wonder ... since the cup was supposedly part of a
cure for vampirism (this is why Nick wanted it so much), perhaps there was
something intrinsic in its making which allowed vampires to handle it
safely? Ok, ok, so my fondness for cheese is showing. Half the fun of this
list, for me, is finding ways around glitches. :)

My friend Linda Roth has a theory that objects absorb some sort of vibration
from their users, or people who venerate them and that it is the vibration
rather than the object itself which affects vampires. This would explain why
LC, who was definitely never a Christian, can be repelled by a cross or
Nick, who was not Jewish in his mortal life, reacted to the menorah. If the
makers and users of the cup intended it for use by vampires, then perhaps
the object never held a vibration which would repell a vampire.

Nick was able to handle them. So either the cups were just that, mundane
if ornate cups, without the power to change vampires back into mortals, as
Nick hoped. Or they were what Nick hoped they were, and they were simply
magical objects, not religious symbols. (They may have been charged with
power, but that power did not discomfit Nick.) Or, even though they *were*
religious symbols and had the power to change vampires to humans, whatever
they symbolized did not have an adverse affect on vampires. That means
some religious symbols repel vampires and others do not. If the cups *are*
religious symbols and don't, why not? We know canonically that not only
Christian symbols have this power. Do only symbols representing the Light
have power to ward them off? Not just any religious symbol? The blades in
Blackwing weren't *obviously* symbolic of the Light, but then neither is
the shape of a cross. <g> It's the mental associations built up around an
object that inform it with its meaning.

Speculating madly,

IIRC, Tracy specifically mentioned the myth where Raven stole the sun. To
me, that would indicate that TPTB wanted the knifes taken as Light symbols,
especially since Tracy said it *after* Nick had already been burned by them.

tells Nat that the cross problem is based upon the cross being a symbol of
"[Christ,] the One True Light". That statement would seem to indicate that
(1) Christianity is *the* only true religion (is it John I:23 that's the
source of "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Light..."?) and
(2) vampires' problems with religious artifacts should be restricted to
Christian religious artifacts.>>

I did not take Nick's describing a cross as the symbol of the One True Light
as Nick endorsing Christianity as the only true religion. After all, he was
describing a cross and its particular meaning. If he were to describe a
menorah or the ritual Raven knife, wouldn't he describe them according to
their own religious significance? Since FK vampires do have problems with
these religious icons, it should prove to our Christian Crusader vampire that
no one religion has exclusive favor with the Almighty.

Just my take on it.

Subject: Re: Religious vs. magical objects

Perhaps the reason Nick could handle the cup but not
the later religiously affiliated objects, the menorah
and the knives, is, as has already been suggested, the
symbology associated with the artifacts.

The sun and light associated symbolism of a cross or
crucifix is well known as it it's talismanic
properties in warding off evil and protecting the
wearer. I am less sure of the symbolism of the Native
American knives but if they were artifacts associated
'good' then being knives they were probably weapons,
not necessarily literally, AGAINST evil. And the
Menorah, an apologies to anyone if I get this wrong
since my Religious studies classes are long past, is
also associated with the resanctification of holy
places, barring it to the unholy such as vampires, and
the generation of light.

We do not, however, have any such knowledge about the
symbolism of the Mayan Goblet. For all we know it
could be an artifact of the 'dark side' and therefore
it wouldn't have the same repelling effect on Nicholas
and other vampires as the other artifacts.

There are other explanations of course.

That the effects the religious icons have on the
vampire are purely psychosomatic. Therefore Nick is
affected by the knives, the crosses and the menorah
(despite the menorah not having the same iconic
importance as the other two items) is because he knew
they were religious symbols and, being a fairly
ecumenical vampire despite his Christian background
(he had sympathy towards the pagans during the Harp
Flashback) he accepted the idea that these items would
have an effect on him. The Mayan cup, however, he
viewed as a magical item rather than a religious one,
a distinction important in his mind, and therefore it
didn't have an effect.

Or three. The PTB hadn't thought about
pagan/non-Christian artifacts having an effect on Nick
during the first episodes and therefore they didn't :)

Greer

PS-In the episode where Nick joined the Cult and was
almost brainwashed (yes I am terrible at names and by
the way sorry for the ramble) did he have any trouble
with any religious symbolism there?

This comment just made me think of another possibility. Perhaps vampires
are affected by religious objects venerated by the people whose blood they
drank. This would explain why LaCroix seemed to be able to handle the sun
symbol when he entombed Divia, but is affected by crosses. Nick could
certainly have drained Jews or Native Americans, but maybe not a Mayan.

There is some very good fanfic that tends toward this approach,
with the Mayan "cure" requiring the sacrifice of some innocent
or dearly beloved person. (Perhaps those with better memories than
mine can provide the story names?)

Nick had no idea of the significance of the knives - he
was startled by the pain.

I don't think Nick was almost brainwashed - I think he was
acting because he knew about the surveillance systems.

I think she said she was opposed to it, as well. But even if she didn't I
believe she *would* be opposed. She has seen too much death to want to add
more - even if those people had caused some of the death she had to deal
with.

In reading the posts on this topic, this half-formed thought keeps popping
into my head.

When Nick mentioned the 'One True Light,' maybe it was more of a reference to
a monotheistic belief. The objects that belong to a religion whose
practitioners subscribe to one deity are perhaps imbued with the power,
vibrations, or whatever, that affect vampires; while those who are
polytheistic (is that a word?) do not. In trying to think of common
denominators, this is what I keep thinking. Christians, Jews, Native
Americans, and certain ancient Egyptians believed in the One Deity, whereas
Mayans, Romans, Druids, and many others do not.

The availability of iceboxes (insulated cabinets cooled by the addition of
25- to 50-pound blocks of ice, replaced on a regular basis as they melt)
necessary to keep blood more than a day or two would not have been around
before about the turn of the nineteenth century, and the importation of ice
in warm weather would have been extremely expensive. More likely, Nick
would not have stored large amounts of blood until the early to middle
twentieth century, when electrical refrigerators became available.

That definitely makes sense. As Barb further said, Nick may not have drunk
from a Mayan. Certainly it's unlikely that he ever had the chance to drink
from one in the period in which the donor would regard the cup as sacred.

It might even explain why crosses are so effective against vampires even in
a society where a lot of people aren't at all religious, even if they are
nominally Christian. They've grown up with the idea that crosses repell
vampires, so they expect it to happen regardless of the religious aspects.

Did Nick *ever* hypnotise Stonetree? I like to think he never did, that
everything from permanent night shift to one more day on a given case,
was done man to man, not vampire to victim. Nick respected Stonetree
more than that. One of the (many) things I liked about first season.

Janet

I've always suspected that Stonetree *did* know something about Nick and that
was why he let Nick go so long w/out a partner and why he took it in his stride
to always assign Nick the night shift. His Native American heritage (okay,
this is a stereotype) in the show might have made him more "comfortable"
accepting a "supernatural" creature, because of a sort of belief in the
importance of balance -- "darkness is as necessary to balance as is light."
Additionally, didn't he (maybe in the pilot?) throw Schanke off the scent with
a weird story about some kind of critter -- scorpion, maybe? I can't remember
and don't have any (believe it or not) of the shows on tape. I remember
thinking that story was some kind of metaphor, but I can't remember now what
it meant to me. Now, I'm not saying that he and Nick ever acknowledged this
"understanding" verbally or even tacitly, but I kind of imagine that Stonetree
ran interference for Nick on many occasions. He knew that Nick was a good guy
doing a good job and that was all that mattered to him. I imagine the
move to another precinct greatly increased the pressure on Nick to hide his
nature. Hopefully, Schanke, with his loyalty and friendship, unwittingly took
over the job of running some interference.

So...maybe I'm rambling, but the above perception is part of the reason I hold
old Stonetree in so much affection!

Now out of that poofy white shirt....ummmm....even better ;-)

Hmmm. I don't know. Haven't you ever had a present that's wrapped so well
that it's more enjoyable just to look at it and imagine what's inside?

Actually, the most drool worthy scene ever, for me, was that scene (can't
remember the ep title) where Nick was trying to mesmerize that female hunter.
Standing in the shadow of the alley, his right (?)cheek scored (poor baby!),
that to-die-for GQ suit with long coat, the wind blowing slightly, and his eyes
staring intensley and compellingly into hers, his hand out beckoning....How did
she *ever* resist???
