In the ep "Human Factor," I've always been of the mind that Nick didn't tell Natalie that Janette had survived the fire and that he'd brought her back across. (I realize there are those who feel she died in the fire, but I'm not one of them. There are too many indications in the tag scene that she is once again among the undead.) Anyway, I felt Nick wouldn't know quite how to admit this to Natalie, especially since she knows all too well how he feels about his current state. I thought he would be too ashamed to tell her what had really happened. While I didn't feel he would outright lie to her, I thought perhaps he might have opted not to tell her anything, leaving her to wonder exactly what had occured, or would gloss over it and let her assume Janette had died. But after watching the ep recently for the first time in a long time, I've changed my mind. It now seems pretty darn clear to me that he *did* tell her (although a valid case could certainly be made for both views). But I no longer think he would mislead her about this, even by the omission of certain facts. In truth, I think he'd feel honor bound to tell her, though it didn't seem like they'd really had a chance to discuss it in depth. Most likely, he just gave her the basic facts, without going into a lot of detail. (On the other hand, I still can't rid myself of the niggling feeling that Natalie should have been a tad more upset than she seemed to be over Nick having brought Janette back across. But perhaps, by the time they came face to face at the crime scene, she'd managed to come to terms with it. And if she had been upset or angry when she first found out, then Nick's cautious approach when he sees her at the crime scene might very well stem from his uncertainty about how she will respond to him.) Regarding Nick's comment that things had been "smoothed over": Natalie's response, "Oookay," could be a pointed reference to the fact that he didn't really answer her question. (Meaning that she'd really been asking how things stood between Nick and Janette.) Then, when Nick tells Natalie he can't take that chance with her life (attempting the cure), a look of relief and agreement flashes across her face. She's obviously been giving it a lot of thought and (until her desperate plea in LK) had reached the same conclusion. Her "extraordinary circumstances" comment suggests that she doesn't necessarily believe it would work for them anyway. That it would take just the right combination of factors and events, some of which they might not even be aware of, to achieve the same result. In other words, I think she views it as a fluke. Perhaps it makes her feel better to do so, rather than believe they could have what they wanted if only they weren't afraid to take the chance. Or, that the only way to save Nick was to sacrifice herself. And jumping ahead to LK, it's very possible that she still wasn't convinced it would work, even though she begged Nick to have "faith" enough to try it. At that point, considering her confused mental and emotional state, she could have viewed it as their last chance and, with that in mind, was finally willing to take the risk, even if she didn't hold out much hope for its success, despite what she told Nick. Jumping back to HF again, Nick tells Nat he can't take that kind of chance with her life. Nat seems gratified that Nick is indirectly admitting he has feelings for her, but her response, "... and I think I'm okay with that," also resolves the earlier anger and resentment she seemed to feel when she learned Janette had achieved, by accident, the ever-elusive mortality that Natalie and Nick have worked so hard to find. And she knows very well who killed those goons. It's written all over her face when she shows Nick the bite marks. You'll also notice she doesn't ask him what he plans to do about it. She knows it's a dilemma he can't possibly resolve. Gee, I see these things so clearly now. I must have been dozing the first few times I watched it. <G> Again, sorry for the re-hash, but I just love a show that continues to surprise me and give me new things to think about even after umpteen-jillion viewings ...
