Subject: Vampire sight

While on a forced trip to the Biosphere 2 structure, I fell to wondering
about our vampires (duh!), and the thought occured... being night
creatures, wouldn't vampires be color blind? Do other primarily night
hunting animals see in color? I honestly don't know.

Wouldn't it be awful for them if they *did* go color blind? Can you see
poor Janette wanting to try on a dress, but being unsure if its black, red,
or 'evil pink'?
Nick unable to correctly spot his car in an 'Olde Cadillac Car Show', having
to resort to popping the trunks to look for one with the pillow and custom
built entertainment center?

Anyone care to take on this and make me some cheese?

Sweet Goddess!!

I know I am almost a month behind on seeing this post and I never saw the
site prier to seeing this post.

Sweet Goddess! that any one could hate some one so much as to devise such a
public and degrading site. I truly pity the person who wrote that site. I
hope that they grow up and learn that they were being a little
self-centered. I wish that this person could see how hurtful they have been
and the public flame of such a personal nature was wrong. Don't
misunderstand, I believe that every one is entitled to an opinion I just
feel that a "put-down" is not cool and that such opinions should be kept to
oneself.

This has been a message from the great beyond.

ooh, yay, a biology question!! In humans, rods allow us to see in low
levels of light, and cones see color differences. There's no reason that a
vampire's cones wouldn't work in regular light, although they're probably
set up to be sensitive to much lower levels of light, so that they could
see more colors at night. If anything, they'd have to worry about being
blinded in bright lights because their photoreceptors are built for dim light.

The part of the eye that actually receives information is only so big. It's
packed with receptors for the information, and they can be of two types...
They can either sense colour or light. Cat's eyes, for instance, are packed
densely with light receptors and have very few colour receptors. Due to
this, their eyesight during the day and in bright light isn't so good (just
watch your cat struggle to find a bit of food on the kitchen floor when
it's bright and you'll see what I mean), but their eyesight at night is
fantastic. I'm not absolutely sure whether they can correctly identify
colours or not, but due to the amount of colour receptors, I would expect
not, or they would see in a much more washed-out form of colour, basically
everything black and white but tinted slightly. Dogs, on the other hand, as
far as I know, see only in black and white and cannot see colour at all,
leading to the conclusion that they likely have no, or a very tiny amount
of, colour receptors. Humans, on the other hand, have eyes with many colour
receptors and not so many light receptors. This makes it so we can see very
well in the daylight, and with the extra detail afforded by colour
information, but can't see for crap at night. You would think that
vampires, having been humans, would still have the same eye structures as
humans. Over time, their eyes may become more densely packed with light
receptors, which would reduce their ability to see in colour.

>Anyone care to take on this and make me some cheese?

My idea on the matter is that instead of gaining more light receptors and
losing colour receptors, vampires instead get an amplification of the light
receptors, especially when they use their night sight. Or they have a way
to make the colour receptors become light receptors when they need them.
This would explain Nick's vision going all to red when he uses his night
sight. It separates out all of the colours but red (which, would make
sense, as the jelly-like goop in eyeballs of vampires, vitreous humour, I
think it is, would be blood-based, just like their sweat and tears. Thusly,
when needing to see less fine detail and more to delve into the darkness
beyond, the receptors would either amplify or change, giving them greater
night vision when needed.

And then Janette wouldn't have to worry about accidentally getting caught
dead in pink...

Hmmm, it does bring me to a serious issue (as serious as we can get talking
about ficticious vampires - ROTFL!) Carouches have got to have some sort of
minor differences from a vampire who craves human blood - shoot, the fact a
carouche craves different blood is a difference. Maybe Screed's eyes would
see a little different than that of a full vampire.

The only way I could see Screed's eye's seeing different is if he was
brought across on a Vulcan's (star trek) copper-based blood. Then his eyes
might turn green instead of red.
Hmm... wait a minute.... Spock was half human. Would then the carouche's
eyes be green with red polka-dots?
Is my brain mass turning green with red polka dots? I'm starting to see

Well, Nat had her birthday in 1992, and the pipe bomb incident was 2 years
before that, so it would have been in 1990.

Hallo

Has anybody out there an idea which crusade Nick was on?
I alwasy thiught it was the sixth (well he could has joined them, only not
as a mortal) but it obviously wasn't. He wasn't on the fourth
because he would have been too young. Well the fifth was 1227/1228 A.D. and
that's where the timeframe gets a little cluttered. (He can't be in
Jerusalem and in Paris at the same time, or can he ?)
So has anybody out at the list has any idea please share it with me, I'm

I've lurked long enough, time to come out from the shadows (not too far!)
and say hello.

I started watching FKon Canada's Showcase channel shortly before Christmas,
because my supply of vampire novels dried up and I still needed a fix. I've
been enjoying FK, and even have some fanfic under construction.

Although Nick is very charming, he can drive me crazy; between him & Chelsea
Quinn Yarbro's St.-Germain, I sometimes think they've got the market
cornered on "moody and depressed". (I can just picture them commiserating in
the corner of some medieval French tavern...) Besides, my heart has long
belonged to a different vampire, someone more pragmatic than Nick and less
brutal than Lacroix--a certain prince of Wallachia, who has been dictating
his memoirs to Fred Saberhagen for many years.

Showcase is about halfway through the third season now; hopefully they'll
start all over again at the first season, so I can see what I missed.
Yesterday they aired an episode with a flashback to the War of 1812 (sorry,
the title escapes me). Sadly, it was the _wrong_ War of 1812. What was our
all-Canadian vampire doing out in Russia with Boney, instead of helping to
fight off those uppity Americans? If he'd taken up the Canadian cause, he
wouldn't have had Lacroix to bother him any more, either--see what happens
when your priorities get mixed up!

IIRC, vampires did lose most of the colors when using the vampiric sight,
seeing only shades of gray, and red from the mammals. It sounds like a
combination of predator b&w vision (which detects movement much better)
and infrared to pick out the heat sources (usually mammalian). It also
explains why fire is doubly effective as a defense, since the heat would
effectively blind the infrared part of the vampiric sight. However, the
human vampires would retain their human sight whenever they were *not*
using the vampiric vision.

How's that?

So one would assume the pipe bomb incident was in 1990.

No, the only things we know of Nick's family is that his father was dead
when he returned as a vampire to visit his mother and sister. There was no
mention of a brother.

I postulated that Nick had an older brother who was to inherit the estate,
which was why Nick became a knight, and that he died young. But that's all
guesswork on my part.

I wouldn't necessarily call Nick "all-Canadian." He is at the time Forever
Knight is set in the "present," but floats around the world otherwise to
wherever life takes him. For example, he's also seen fighting in the American
Civil War, and in the US at other times (as a professor of archaeology, for
example) - or I *think* that was the US if I remember right ). He's in
Britian, and apparently very British, for part of World War II, as well, if
I'm not mistaken, in France for part of it. Nick seems to be a man of the
world more than any particular country. Or at least he belongs in spirit to
whatever country or cause he's currently involved in.

And I hope you weren't calling *ALL* Americans uppity. There are people on
this list from around the world and we respect and are friendly towards all.

LaCroix takes up whatever cause suits him at the time. So no matter whomever
Nick is fighting for, or where ever he travels, LaCroix follows. That seems
to be a basic canon about FOREVER KNIGHT.

Welcome to FORKNI-L, by the way, and when you see other episodes, you will

Say! Maybe he chose it while using his vampire vision and didn't realize

saw him sent to the Holy Land in 1220 as a punishment for a crime which he
didn't commit.

Maybe I should mention that "going on Crusade" could also mean just going to
the Holy Land to join the Crusader garrisons. At least, in English, it
doesn't have to mean that he joined an organized expedition. My German isn't

IIRC, the cones have two modes of response, according to the light level, due to
the chemical transmitter being produced being able to change from one sort to
another. This is why your nightsight improves after about 10 minutes. It does,
however, drain most of the colour from your vision. If you get a glimpse of
white light, it's painful and your vision reverts almost instantly to bright
light mode. Red light, though, does not affect it. So, could the night vision
mode be the default?

Since the message was aimed at me, I wanted to say publically "no problemo,
matie!"

Actually, truth be told, had I the financial means, I'd probably be living in
Canada. Nothing against the US which I truly do love, I'd just like to go north
to new adventures! LOL! It is always hard to use sarcasm or wry humor via e-mail
e-mail with out the little thingees such as :-D

Anyways, I still think Nick is more a man o' the world with the habit of
becoming passionately attached to the place he happens to be living at the time.
THus, in present day Toronto he'd be very much an "all Canadian" type o' droog,
put whatever country he's in, he REALLy gets into the culture, IMHO.

Who? <g>
And waddya mean 'moody and depressed'? MiLord is not 'moody and depressed'!
He's just 'perkiness challenged' (thank the Maker!)

All Canadian?! Uppity Americans?! I'll have you know that I personally
sent in the papers for Nick to join the Phoenix Botanical Garden's society
so that he could visit Spike the Vampiric Cactus's summer home while on
vacations. A very *= American =* institution. Not that Nick *is* American.
He's a Globe Trotting/Flying Brabantian! So Nyaaaaah! <eg>

Hi all!

Commonwealthers!
We must remember to tell the Yanks that we only insult the ones we like.;)
They can get a little sensitive at times...and aren't quite used to our
brand of tonguelashing humor...<eg>

I am sure Nicky boy got himself into a tad or two of trouble this way!;) And
I bet ya he couldn't whammy his way out of them all!

Luv ya!
Kylie.

At first I thought you were addressing denizens of Massachussetts -- which
is a commonwealth; one of four in the U.S. (the others being Pennsylvania,
Virginia, and Kentucky).

And as my favorite native of Connecticut will tell you, the only true
Yankee is a native of Connecticut. : )
