You have hit the nail on the head Lisa. That is very likely why Nigel looked better in his uniform to the re-enactors (he looks just fine in anything to us). This is why we stress wearing correct reproduction clothing and undergarments so you will be encouraged to move in a more period fashion. Nigel also likely understands that people didn't move the same way they do now. Of interest to our fiction writers who include historical flashbacks is that in the 18th century there were prints that reminded men and women to "keep within the compass" which is the imaginary circle around you that you move within. This also refers to keeping within a certain moral circle as well. Judy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 18:17:56 -0500 From: "Susan M. I can't think of any of the characters on Friends that wouldn't be summarily relegated to "meal" status, except for maybe Chandler. Janette might bring him accross due to his comeliness and the vulnerability that his sarcasm hides. I think his mouth would quickly land him on the **it list of his vampiric grandfather though. What happened in-between seems to be anybody's guess, but it is stated that Gen. Greene took these soldiers into battle at Trenton. Personally, I liked it. They didn't over do the killing too much and really got across the fact that war is hell. Thought Jeff Daniels did a great job of portraying GW. He was brooding, thoughtful and quite a leader. I kept thinking how appropriately depicted were the scenes that he was seen alone, considering the enormity of the task he'd undertaken and the weight of the responsibility that hung on his shoulders. Surrender? Hell no, he'd be dead in a heartbeat and all those that signed the Declaration with him. I can't think about any of the events surrounding the revolution without marveling at the risks those men took. I rather doubt we could find one person today who would even consider taking the gamble they did. On to Nigel. His part was way too short. I enjoyed him emmensly (sp). He looked great and sounded perfect. (Almost died when the Mc somebody who they stole the boats from had a cackneyed English accent and he was supposed to be Scots!) Would have loved to see more of NB, and yet, this was one of his non FK performances that blended too much with Lacroix. I've seen him in other stuff and didn't have trouble separating the two, but last night, the tie was strong. Maybe I haven't seen FK in awhile and need my fix. Ah well, just adding my two cents. Actually, Daniels *did* enjoy the part. The problem is, there is really not a lot of personal historical info avail about GW. What Daniels was trying to portray was the internal fight as one man tries to prove himself worthy of carrying the fate of something bigger than himself. That's a pretty heavy load to carry. Washington was a reluctant leader - he really didn't want the job, but he stepped up when called upon. You can imagine the pressure of his position. Did any of you see the making of The Crossing? It gives a little more insight. -Carla copper6500@y....... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 08:53:06 -0500 From: Tim Phillips <Timp@d.......> Subject: Re: Lacroix's again > I'd rather have FK be the woderful memory it is than have them bring it back > and do a Bobby Ewing. :: cringe :: personally, I think FK made the Dallas writers look like real amateurs. they actually had the gall to bring back LaCroix after he'd been staked through the heart to a wall, set on fire and burned to ash. And it worked. Due to the writing and the wonderful character that Nigel Bennet breathed life into, you didn't really explore past LaCroix's "really Nicholas, I am far too old to die that easily". You were just glad the fiend was back to wreak Hell on Nicky and keep him honest. Speaking from personal experience, I wouldn't be surprised if they also used re-enactors for some of the scenes. I've family and friends who were in Glory and Gettysburg, and they ended up giving the costumers the lowdown on how the uniforms were *really* worn, not how the military manuals of the time said they should be worn. It was a practical issue... the uniform diagrams LOOK great, but to actually use a soldier's equipment (read: guns and ammo) stuff had to be moved to more convenient locations. I know someone earlier stated that some reenactors consulted on the project, but in the end asked not to be credited. One of the problems with The Crossing is that it *IS* a tv movie, and as such had a limited budget. If they cut corners here and there to stay within budget.... some things just aren't going to be authentic. Gotta go to work... -Carla ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 09:47:56 -0500 From: Gubs <gnn200@i.......> Subject: Re: Crossover musings > I can't think of any of the characters on Friends that wouldn't be summarily > relegated to "meal" status, except for maybe Chandler.
