The quote is found in a book (paperback) called "Dylan Thomas -
Collected Poems". It was published by New Directions Publishing
Corporation, 80 Eighth Avenue, New York 10011
The first lines of his poems in this book are also used as the titles,
so you would look under "And death shall have no dominion", which is
the first line of the poem.

I always thought that LaCroix and Janette both "wanted" Nick. He was a
dashing soldier, and didn't Janette say in one flashback something like
"I WANT him!" in feverish tones? I thought LaCroix used Janette to
seduce Nick and then LaCroix stepped in, even though Janette wanted Nick
for herself, anyway. His reason for not letting Janette bring Nick
across may have had to do with her not being strong enough to do it, or
perhaps La Croix wanted himself to be Nick's master. I somehow can't
see something as yummy as Nick pass by LaCroix without him (LC) wanting
it for his very own, especially since Janette was very interested as
well.

Thanks for the question - it was a good one!

I installed Norton Utilities over the weekend last week and ran the Disk
Doctor program which was supposed to find and fix any hard disk troubles
in came across. After doing all of that, when I fired up my Netscape
e-mail, all of my mail was GONE. I nearly died! It took a long time,
but I finally found and reinstated my messages. Anyway, when I got to
looking through my messages, I found stuff from way back in May that had
not been read yet, and that I had never seen. There were posts that had
been talked about by various people later on, but for which I had never
seen the original post. I assumed that all of this was happening
because of the Disk Doctor, but maybe not. Today I got a post from
someone who says that some messages from me, dated last March!, just
turned up in her box.

I have no clue (or is it klew?) about why this is happening.
If anyone else figures it out, please let me know. Thanks!

These aren't mine. Well, what I mean is, even though I have them on
recipe cards, I didn't invent them. ;) They were posted by Cousin
"Susan" Phoenix a while back. Hope nobody minds.

Nicky's Finn:
1/2 oz of each: Ribena
                 Pernod
                 French Vermouth
                 gin
1 oz white creme de menthe

Mix Pernod, vermouth, gin, and creme de menth. Pour Ribena into glass.
Float rest of mixture on top.

LaCroix Sling:
1 oz brandy
1 0z benedictine
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1 oz Pernod (a lot!)
1/2 tsp Ribena
Club soda

Shake brandy, benedictine, lemon juice, pernod, and ribena with ice.
Strain into 10oz glass with a few ice cubes. Fill rest of glass with club
soda.

This one's not Susan's. Someone suggested some time back that we make
Voda and Ribena over crushed ice the official "Forever Knight" drink. I
don't know what happened with that- I didn't hear anything more about it.

Back to Susan's recipes. . . .

LaCroix-Tai:
1 oz light rum
1/2 oz Ribena
1/2 oz triple sec (whatever that is. Could someone klew me in?)
1 1/2 oz sour mix

Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into glass. Add maraschino
cherry.

LaCroix Daiquiri:
2 oz Bacardi Carta Oro
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp Ribena
juice 1/2 lemon

Mix in blender with ice.

Now for a couple non-alcoholic ones. . . .

Nicky's Fizz:
5 oz orange juice
1 oz sour mix
ribena to taste
club soda

Mix OJ, sour mix, and ribena. Pour over ice. Fill rest of glass with
club soda.

Cafe LaCroix:
8 oz strong black coffee
1 oz heavy cream
1 tsp ribena

Mix in blender until smooth.

I haven't tried any of these, so if you do, let me know what you think.

Hi All!

Okay, it seems my post about the Cousins of the Knight has stepped on some
sister UFers.

I did *not* mean to imply the UF only sticks to the sexual side of the
relationship. What I was pointing out is that Cousins of the Knight is
suitable for *everyone* especially those wanting to shy away from the more
erotic aspects of the UF discussions.

Also, most of the UF posts go private e-mail on their own loop--My teenager
was the one who first discovered FK, got me into it, naggged me to go on the
net...
She wants to have her .02 cents worth heard but I absolutely CANNOT allow her
to join UF.

I understand that this list is to stay PG rated so that our younger members
can participate in the discussions. A perfect solution for the Cousins of
the Knight--they are the PG rated version of UF.

Any other parents out there relate to what I am trying to get at here?
Unless UF wants to put out a PG rated version of their loops Tia can't be
included. That's not fair to her and so I want to see Cousins of the Knight
get off the ground for those fans in her situation.

I am absulutely positively NOT trying to undermine, steal members away from,
distort, etc ANYTHING about UF! I am first (See my sig!) and foremost a
UFer.

Now, does that clear things up?!

I think that if you're happy with your situation, you can really enjoy
yourself. I mean, most of the vamps we see seem pretty pleased.

I know personally, I would love to be immortal. There's never enough time
to do everything! I'd finally be able to say, "It's OK, I'll do that when
I finish this."

Even Nick, who was unhappy, found plenty of things to keep himself busy.

Annother issue I had wanted to bring up is that everyone is not comfortable
with a sexual relationship between N&LC, either for the incestuous
implications they see or for personal religious/moral reasons.

I do not think descrimination to anyone is fair. If someone does not feel
they can become affiliated with UF for some reason-- ie age, beliefs-- they
will have somewhere where they can still discuss and add to the whole of
fandom. I don't think people should have to forced to make a decision of all
or nothing. A compromise should be attainable.

Remember how I alleged that USA cut the tag in NiQ? Well, don't blame USA,

through what turned out to be only 5 seconds worth of commercials. My dad
comes in and says, "I think I taped over some of that." He was trying to
tape FK for me but got there about an hour too late. So that explains why
my tag is cut. ;) Boy what I wouldn't give for a VCR with a timer...

Just one more clarification here...

Joy wrote:

About a good 90% of the posts on the UF loop are PG or PG-13. We have a
reputation, I think, for being rather risque, but even in the posts about
sex or sensuality are usually conducted with very mild language. Melrose
Place makes us look like the Girl Scouts! ;) The reason I ask for age
statements is mostly so that we can privately trade fiction without having
to worry about the legalities.

I understand not everyone is comfortable with *all* the aspects of the UF.
But that's not the reason I don't post all my UF-related posts here. (Since
when have I shied away from making people uncomfortable? ;) ) The reason I
started the UF loop is probably why most people start private loops: so
people of a like mind can babble incessantly without worrying about
quote-length rules, or worrying about annoying other listers with threads
that go on and on, and they know that if they have a specific question they
can post it to their fellow loopies and feel reasonably assured the question
will be answered.

BTW, the UF loop now has an average of 50 (!) members, give or take a few
who go on vacation now and then. Those who leave us almost always come back
to us. Sound like any particular vampire you know? ;)

Joy, I don't mean to attack your posts, I just wanted to clarify those few
points. Can't help it, I'm anal retentive. ;)

True. But I kind of doubt vampires want post-embalming blood unless the
procedure isn't done with standard embalming fluid. As I understand it,
since dead bodies have no pulse, undertakers have to pump the blood out.
They run tubes into two of the corpse's largest blood vessels. Into one
tube, they pump embalming fluid; the other tube drains into wherever they
dispose of blood. If you've ever tried to clean a power painter by forcing
hot water through it, you can envision the results. The first few cups
would be mostly blood, but after that, you'd get a blood/embalming fluid
mix with a higher and higher percentage of embalming fluid. Not too tasty.
Now, if the embalming is done with saline, or something else that doesn't
taste offensive, then maybe vampires could deal with it. Maybe there's a
vampire undertaker who embalms with wine--that's where all that blood/wine
mix comes from?

Is that more than you ever really wanted to know? <g> I tend to agree with
the blood-bank rejects theory--that and the "drive a bloodmobile around and
pay the clueless winos the going rate to donate" approach.

Subject: Fighting Factions (Long)

Hello Gentle Forever Knight Fans -

It has come to my attention thru some private email, that there
seems to be some kind of uproar with the Cousins of the Night
versus the Unnamed Faction. Please bear with me as I tell you
why we have both factions.

The Cousins of the Knight want to explore the relationship
between Nick and LaCroix, every aspect of that relationship as
it is represented in friendship, hatred, brotherhood, father/son,
friend/enemy and any other specific emotional ties that they may have
that doesn't include the erotic aspects. Several of us feel that there is
so much more to explain and examine between these two, that all
the other *outside* influences don't come into play for them.

The Unnamed Faction wants to explore a lot of these same topics,
yet it is devoted to the *adult erotic* relationship that Nick and LC may
have. They can in their opinion *SEE* something there that would
imply that there may be a sexual thing. All of thier conversations happen
off list in an email group. You must send a disclaimer to them to say you are
18 or older and that you would like to be included in thier group.

The UF and The Cousins of the Knight are two totally different groups
that share some topics, but not all. There is no reason for any problem
between our two groups, and a few people belong to both groups. The COTK
are not a private email group, we have decided we would like to discuss our
ideas on the list to get opinions of other people who are FK fans. We are not
trying to cause any trouble, nor are we wanting to force ideas on anyone!

I hope this clarifies some things for those people who asked about COTK.

Thanks for bearing with me through this extremely long, dull and boring post

I think they get it from wherever they can, including importing it from
was zones, where there are plenty of bodies around from which blood can
be collected, as long as you get to them quickly. It would also be possible
to kill people in many parts of the world without creating too much of a
stir, and drain the blood and export it back to places like Toronto. Then
there are the special vintages like what LC gave Nick in Games People Play.
That didn't seem to be just any old blood.

Partly it depends on how many vampires are in Toronto, and how much blood
they need or want.

I notice that the creative PTB have kept all these points ambiguous, which
makes it possible for all of us to come up with whatever theory fits into
our own view of Forever Knight and our own view of FK vampires.

For Denver fans who were interested in the 2 audio tapes by Ger, I got a
call today from Audio Adventures in Boulder. They said that more
"Hauntings" tapes have been ordered, and that they were able to get
copies of "Forbodings" as well. The tapes will take 2 weeks or so to
arrive, however, as they are being shipped from Canada.

Call her if you are interested in these.

When I first saw a list comment about Nick being a brick, my first reaction
was:
Do you mean built like a. . . or,
Thick as a. . . ?

Then I saw another posting indicating that it generally seems to be used in
refererence to a character capable of taking alot of abuse.

As for Nick being a British style brick, considering all that he puts
everyone around him through does anyone really think this interpretation
would apply?

RE: In particular-Where was Nick when he was brought over?
Frederick stated that:
Flashbacks insiste that he was in Paris?

I am interested in how you think the flashbacks have to be in Paris. All
I've gotten out of them is generic Medieval architecture-could be anywhere.
I've watched "Light of the Moon, and 'Near Death' several times on this due
to fic. I'm writing. If there is something there making it HAVE to be Paris
I really want to know. I thought most likely Italy.

Another comment: Flashbacks in above episodes show Nick looking far too
healthy to be suffering from any near-fatal wounds.

P.S. Re When and where Nick was brough across. The 6th Crusade did not
actually get underway until August-September 1228. If Nick had made it too
the Crusade it is very unlikely that he would be back in Europe before
1229-1230. Af far as I can figure this seems to leaves 3 possibilities:
1)He was part of the pre-Crusade forerunner group that went over in 1227 and
somehow ended up back in Europe by 1228. (seems possible and is the theory I
have accepted for my story)
2) He met LaCroix and Janette in the Mid-East. (Seems unlikely, flashback
settings and costuming do not have the right feel)
3) Nick was on his way to the Crusade and met up with LaCroix and Janette
before he could get to Brindisi. (Also possible)

Any comments on the above would be much appreciated as I am trying to make my
story as accurate to cannon as possible.

In "Only the Lonely" The guy who delivers the "supposedly" stiff Nick to
Nat's lab tells Nat that He tried to stop a robbery and "someone handed him a
pipe bomb for his trouble."

Intersting point here. I thought Nick was a Torono Police officer when this
occurred but, others have pointed out that there is no indication of this in
the episode. In which case...when and how did Nick end up on the police
force in Toronto?

Well, during the very first episode, "Dark Knight", at the very beginning,
before Nick even wakes up as a vampire, the words "Paris, 1228" flash on the
screen.

So I think we can take it as given. :)

In a message dated 96-06-29 01:42:12 EDT, you write:

<< In which case...when and how did Nick end up on the police

If memory serves, Nick (off-screen) whammied some Toronto PD bureaucrat
into believing that he (Nick) was a transfer from another PD (Chicago?) and
issuing him a badge and uniform, and entering him on the payroll.
Unfortunately, Nick forgot to make sure that his former records were
entered into the computer. This nearly blew his cover in a later episode.

I haven't seen the last four episodes of the third season, so please
forgive me if I say something that totally disagrees with them :)

From other messages that have been posted, I get the impression that
vampires can actually see a person's last thoughts and impressions from
their blood. If this is true, then would Nick be able to see a murderer's
face by drinking from a murder victim? I know that drinking from a dead
person sounds kind of nasty, and of course Nick doesn't drink human blood,
but you would think that the good that he could do (finding the murderer
quickly) would make up for that. Nick would still have to find physical
proof, the authorities wouldn't really like him to say that he "has a gut
feeling" about the murderer, but he would know where to direct his
attention, and he would be able to make sure that the murderer didn't kill
anyone else.

Sorry if this sounds really confused, but I am interested in hearing what
others think (and it would be a cool fiction story, if Nick solved a murder
this way)

A good idea in principle, but my impression is that the knowledge a vampire
gains from a person's blood is in the nature of a psychic link. So the prey
would have to be alive to transmit the information. True, Francesca invites
Nick to drink her gourmet blood out of a glass, so the two of them would not
have been in direct contact with the victim, but still, the victim was alive
when the blood was drawn. That's how I see it -- blood from a dead body
would be psychically "dead."

Nick could, however, solve crimes by drinking from a suspect (if he could get
uninterrupted access to the prisoner, or if he caught up with a suspect who
wasn't yet under arrest). He would thereby find out if the person was guilty
or not, and if guilty, get supporting facts he could use to turn his "hunch"
into a viable arrest. I interpret the "blood knowledge" such that the
vampire remembers facts he draws in with the blood; the intensity of the
experience just fades after 2 hours, so he remembers it like something he has
read or been told, rather than a first-hand experience. For those who
interpret it as total forgetting, he could simply write a note to himself.

Of course, this procedure ignores the problem of the guilt he would feel over
breaking his rule against human blood, as well as the danger of his losing
control and draining the suspect. Nick really needs some therapy for that!
With help, I cling to the belief that he could "pursue the dream of the
occasional user," to quote that wicked novel, Jonathan Nasaw's THE WORLD ON
BLOOD, in which the attempted abstainer is also named Nick.

In one of those ep's that you missed it was made clear that somethings are
picked up temporarily from FRESH blood. The murder victims are not
necessarily fresh enough or may not have seen their killers. (Not to
mention the trouble Nick would have trying to explain just how he had picked
up that info.)

It would be unreliable at best. However it is an interesting thought.
