I always thought that LaCroix and Janette both "wanted" Nick. He was a dashing soldier, and didn't Janette say in one flashback something like "I WANT him!" in feverish tones? I thought LaCroix used Janette to seduce Nick and then LaCroix stepped in, even though Janette wanted Nick for herself, anyway. His reason for not letting Janette bring Nick across may have had to do with her not being strong enough to do it, or perhaps La Croix wanted himself to be Nick's master. I somehow can't see something as yummy as Nick pass by LaCroix without him (LC) wanting it for his very own, especially since Janette was very interested as well. I installed Norton Utilities over the weekend last week and ran the Disk Doctor program which was supposed to find and fix any hard disk troubles in came across. After doing all of that, when I fired up my Netscape e-mail, all of my mail was GONE. I nearly died! It took a long time, but I finally found and reinstated my messages. Anyway, when I got to looking through my messages, I found stuff from way back in May that had not been read yet, and that I had never seen. There were posts that had been talked about by various people later on, but for which I had never seen the original post. I assumed that all of this was happening because of the Disk Doctor, but maybe not. Today I got a post from someone who says that some messages from me, dated last March!, just turned up in her box. I have no clue (or is it klew?) about why this is happening. If anyone else figures it out, please let me know. Thanks! Lisa -- Lisa M., fearless and everlasting Nick&NatPacker - (wyllow@n.......) Nicky's Finn: 1/2 oz of each: Ribena Pernod French Vermouth gin 1 oz white creme de menthe Mix Pernod, vermouth, gin, and creme de menth. Pour Ribena into glass. Float rest of mixture on top. LaCroix Sling: 1 oz brandy 1 0z benedictine 1/2 tsp lemon juice 1 oz Pernod (a lot!) 1/2 tsp Ribena Club soda Shake brandy, benedictine, lemon juice, pernod, and ribena with ice. Okay, it seems my post about the Cousins of the Knight has stepped on some sister UFers. I did *not* mean to imply the UF only sticks to the sexual side of the relationship. What I was pointing out is that Cousins of the Knight is suitable for *everyone* especially those wanting to shy away from the more erotic aspects of the UF discussions. Also, most of the UF posts go private e-mail on their own loop--My teenager was the one who first discovered FK, got me into it, naggged me to go on the net... She wants to have her .02 cents worth heard but I absolutely CANNOT allow her to join UF. A perfect solution for the Cousins of >the Knight--they are the PG rated version of UF. About a good 90% of the posts on the UF loop are PG or PG-13. We have a reputation, I think, for being rather risque, but even in the posts about sex or sensuality are usually conducted with very mild language. Melrose Place makes us look like the Girl Scouts! ;) The reason I ask for age statements is mostly so that we can privately trade fiction without having to worry about the legalities. I understand not everyone is comfortable with *all* the aspects of the UF. But that's not the reason I don't post all my UF-related posts here. (Since when have I shied away from making people uncomfortable? ;) ) The reason I started the UF loop is probably why most people start private loops: so people of a like mind can babble incessantly without worrying about quote-length rules, or worrying about annoying other listers with threads that go on and on, and they know that if they have a specific question they can post it to their fellow loopies and feel reasonably assured the question will be answered. BTW, the UF loop now has an average of 50 (!) members, give or take a few who go on vacation now and then. Those who leave us almost always come back to us. Margaret wrote: >Where does the blood served in the Raven come from? Maybe from mortuaries. > Undertakers drain blood from the body in preparation for embalming. True. But I kind of doubt vampires want post-embalming blood unless the procedure isn't done with standard embalming fluid. As I understand it, since dead bodies have no pulse, undertakers have to pump the blood out. They run tubes into two of the corpse's largest blood vessels. Into one tube, they pump embalming fluid; the other tube drains into wherever they dispose of blood. If you've ever tried to clean a power painter by forcing hot water through it, you can envision the results. The first few cups would be mostly blood, but after that, you'd get a blood/embalming fluid mix with a higher and higher percentage of embalming fluid. Not too tasty. Now, if the embalming is done with saline, or something else that doesn't taste offensive, then maybe vampires could deal with it. Maybe there's a vampire undertaker who embalms with wine--that's where all that blood/wine mix comes from? Is that more than you ever really wanted to know? <g> I tend to agree with the blood-bank rejects theory--that and the "drive a bloodmobile around and pay the clueless winos the going rate to donate" approach. Please bear with me as I tell you why we have both factions. The Cousins of the Knight want to explore the relationship between Nick and LaCroix, every aspect of that relationship as it is represented in friendship, hatred, brotherhood, father/son, friend/enemy and any other specific emotional ties that they may have that doesn't include the erotic aspects. Several of us feel that there is so much more to explain and examine between these two, that all the other *outside* influences don't come into play for them. The Unnamed Faction wants to explore a lot of these same topics, yet it is devoted to the *adult erotic* relationship that Nick and LC may have. They can in their opinion *SEE* something there that would imply that there may be a sexual thing. All of thier conversations happen off list in an email group. You must send a disclaimer to them to say you are 18 or older and that you would like to be included in thier group. The UF and The Cousins of the Knight are two totally different groups that share some topics, but not all. There is no reason for any problem between our two groups, and a few people belong to both groups. The COTK are not a private email group, we have decided we would like to discuss our ideas on the list to get opinions of other people who are FK fans. We are not trying to cause any trouble, nor are we wanting to force ideas on anyone! I hope this clarifies some things for those people who asked about COTK. It would also be possible to kill people in many parts of the world without creating too much of a stir, and drain the blood and export it back to places like Toronto. Then there are the special vintages like what LC gave Nick in Games People Play. That didn't seem to be just any old blood. Partly it depends on how many vampires are in Toronto, and how much blood they need or want. The 6th Crusade did not actually get underway until August-September 1228. If Nick had made it too the Crusade it is very unlikely that he would be back in Europe before 1229-1230. Af far as I can figure this seems to leaves 3 possibilities: 1)He was part of the pre-Crusade forerunner group that went over in 1227 and somehow ended up back in Europe by 1228. (seems possible and is the theory I have accepted for my story) 2) He met LaCroix and Janette in the Mid-East. (Seems unlikely, flashback settings and costuming do not have the right feel) 3) Nick was on his way to the Crusade and met up with LaCroix and Janette before he could get to Brindisi. Nick would still have to find physical proof, the authorities wouldn't really like him to say that he "has a gut feeling" about the murderer, but he would know where to direct his attention, and he would be able to make sure that the murderer didn't kill anyone else. Sorry if this sounds really confused, but I am interested in hearing what others think (and it would be a cool fiction story, if Nick solved a murder this way) Luciana ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 29 Jun 1996 12:42:27 -0400 From: "Margaret L. Contains "Francesca" spoiler: * * * * * * A good idea in principle, but my impression is that the knowledge a vampire gains from a person's blood is in the nature of a psychic link. So the prey would have to be alive to transmit the information. True, Francesca invites Nick to drink her gourmet blood out of a glass, so the two of them would not have been in direct contact with the victim, but still, the victim was alive when the blood was drawn. That's how I see it -- blood from a dead body would be psychically "dead." Nick could, however, solve crimes by drinking from a suspect (if he could get uninterrupted access to the prisoner, or if he caught up with a suspect who wasn't yet under arrest). He would thereby find out if the person was guilty or not, and if guilty, get supporting facts he could use to turn his "hunch" into a viable arrest. I interpret the "blood knowledge" such that the vampire remembers facts he draws in with the blood; the intensity of the experience just fades after 2 hours, so he remembers it like something he has read or been told, rather than a first-hand experience. For those who interpret it as total forgetting, he could simply write a note to himself. Of course, this procedure ignores the problem of the guilt he would feel over breaking his rule against human blood, as well as the danger of his losing control and draining the suspect. Nick really needs some therapy for that! With help, I cling to the belief that he could "pursue the dream of the occasional user," to quote that wicked novel, Jonathan Nasaw's THE WORLD ON BLOOD, in which the attempted abstainer is also named Nick. In one of those ep's that you missed it was made clear that somethings are picked up temporarily from FRESH blood. The murder victims are not necessarily fresh enough or may not have seen their killers. (Not to mention the trouble Nick would have trying to explain just how he had picked up that info.) It would be unreliable at best. However it is an interesting thought. =========================================================================
