Hi!

Here's another question for you all.

What had happened to Nick when Nat found out about him being a vampire? I
know that his body was sent to her because he was believed to be dead, but
what exactly had happened to him? A car accident? A fire?

Please help. Thanks!

Some friends have encouraged me to do this now, rather than waiting until
the episode airs this weekend. I usually don't take advice, but this
time, knowing that once the episode has aired I probably won't even read
the list for a few days, I thought I'd heed the voices of those wiser than
I and say my piece. This post will contain spoilers for Human Factor and
maybe for Last Knight.

So, if you don't want to read spoilers for Human Factor, Cynthia style, go

HF hurts. HF messes with someone I've come to know and love in ways that
are painful and difficult to discuss. In some ways I'm glad the debates
that drove me off the list in February were over whether Janette was dead
or alive, because I don't know that I could have come back to the lists if
the debates had been about the assassination of Janette's character. She
deserved a better script for her only appearance of the season, and
although from an actor's perspective Deborah Duchene got a goldmine, from
a character perspective, I feel cheated.

Janette, in DD's own words:

"Janette is 99% proud of being a vampire and only 1% saddened by the loss
of her humanity"; "For Janette, anyway, [the sexual pull] is always
involved in any relationship with anybody."

Both of those things got taken from her in HF and what were they replaced
with? An anti-feminist fantasy about being rescued by a firefighter (the
difference between a 13th century knight and a 20th century firefighter
being ... exactly what?), falling in love on the rebound, losing her lover
and becoming human, and suddenly discovering the joys of motherhood.

None of that is the Janette I know and love and I don't care how many
times I hear from people that there are ways to read the first two seasons
so it makes sense, it doesn't make sense to me. I have come to accept
Human Factor as Janette's ever so practical response to what life hands
her; that's as far as I've made it. (Hey, I still assiduously ignore BMV
... acceptance is an improvement over that, isn't it?)

Love Robert? Sure. Love of her life? Not on your life. She even says
it herself: It was like the emotions of 800 years were finally released.
That wasn't grief about Robert, although it was certainly triggered by
that, that was just plain old ordinary grief finally getting released
after too long. In pain? You bet. Who does she go to? Nick. Who helps
her, with little or no question in spite of what things look like? Nick.
The absence of sexual tension? That was a complete and utter screw-up in
my opinion, purely so they could drag the "She's human" surprise out to
one more commercial break. That was a bad directing choice, in an attempt
to increase the dramatic impact of the revelation that she was mortal: if
she and Nick had touched, Ger couldn't have pulled off the "I can't tell
about her" that he managed, vaguely to pull off until the end of act two
or three.

Did Nick do the right thing when he brought her back over against her
will? In the script, after Janette says "no" to Nick's offer, the note
indicates that Nick hesitates, trying to decide if Janette's death will
have the same impact on him that Robert's had on her and deciding that his
own mortality isn't worth her life. Given that, I say Nick did do the
right thing ... not to mention what I'd think of him if he hadn't done it.
Not to mention what it tells us about the "cure" itself.

Because finally, I think that the biggest problem with Human Factor isn't
whether Nick was a jerk, Janette was out of character, or even how
ambiguous the "not supposed to be ambiguous" ending was or wasn't. The
biggest problem with the episode was that it moved the idea of a cure from
the realm of the possible to the realm of the actual.

And that lead to Last Knight. See, Nick really did understand what
Janette's cure entailed, and he was right to keep telling Nat that he
didn't want to risk it. That cure required a death, a breakdown, and
finally, probably, a leap of faith that would be utterly unavailable to
someone who *knew* that the cure was even possible. But in any case,
Janette's cure carried too high a price ... and Nick knew better for a
while than to try it. This is especially true if we accept the premise
from Francesca that blood carries all those memories with it ...

Enough from me. I haven't been that forthcoming about this episode, even
with my friends. If you've made it this far, please be aware that for
some of us, this episode was as painful as Last Knight was for others and
as big a betrayal. In the interests of those who were here in February, I
hope we take it easier this time than we did then ... and in the interests
of those who are new here, please consider this a reminder that some of us
have a longstanding relationship with a character who has a rough time in
this episode. Be careful with her for all of our sakes, okay?

A pipe bomb.
The person who wheeled him into the morgue told Nat that he
tried to stop a robbery and was tossed a pipe bomb for his
troubles. He also told her she didn't have to worry about
having much of a face to look at. She unzipped the bag and
found he only had a few scratches. She turned to make a
phonecall asking if she was delivered the right body and when
she turned back, he was up and about.
This was in first season's "Only the Lonely".

When Nick revived, he found fresh blood in the morgue cooler.

From what we saw in Last Knight, it looks like the impressions gotten from
drinking blood might not be that easy to interpret. That might even be
more true if the motivation for killing has less to do with bloodlust
itself, and more to do with anger or revenge. Nick wasn't interested in
knowing all about Marie-Claire; he assumed he already knew. So he might
not have not been paying too much attention to the impressions he was getting
from her blood.

now, is this the ep that was flashback material for LK?
if so,
does anyone have OtL on tape (and who's willing to tape
it for me, for some $/etc./no blood)? [if not, tha's okay, i
won't combust over it]_

as for the morgue scene, i wondered about that too!
i wonder if spontaneous reanimation is a common thing. yech.

oh yes, and in the flashback in LK--when the bodybag was
moved around, i noticed a lot of blood (on the slab, etc)--but
when Nick heals, he gets up and all the blood is gone. and
his clothing is intact. okay, i assumed the blood would stay
where it was and at least his clothing would be tattered, unless
they didn't show the whole scene. does the blood evaporate?
does it go back into Nick? does his clothing heal too?!
or am i just looking too much into details? >sigh<

I don't remember a snort and it didn't look to me like LaCroix was smiling
evilly. There was a line in NiQ during one of LC's monologues after he said,
"You must come back." He said, "The way back for one is the way back for
the other." I kept wondering what that line meant until later in the
season after seeing AtA. After seeing that episode, I think what LaCroix
meant is that if he could accept Nicholas more, as Nick is, instead of trying
so hard to change him, then Nicholas might be able to accept LaCroix more.
I think that's what LaCroix tried to do through much of third season. AtA
showed how well it worked. So I think at the end of NiQ, LaCroix would
have been trying hard not to do anything that might push Nick away.

The flashback that you mention did not show the whole scene.
While Nat has her back turned and is on the phone, all of the
blood on Nick, the slab, etc., gets sucked back into his body.
That's where all the blood went. He absorbed all he was in

it be possible to find hope and glory in any age?

Not frequent, but far from unknown. Note references in Victorian times
to burials with a bell that could be rung from inside a casket; mistaking
people in something like a coma has been an issue for some time, and a
horror for centuries....

Sounds like the Unnamed Faction to me...

"every bond but the one for Unnamed Faction..." - um, I think this needs to
be clarified - it seems to indicate that the UF is something it's not. We
are NOT about *focusing* on getting a certain two male vampires into amorous
situations, although that aspect can be a part of it. There is by NO MEANS
anything called "the Unnamed bond" or whatever is being referred to.

Joy's description except for that one sentence exactly fits the Unnamed
Faction.

And yes, there's a lot that can be discussed on *this* list. A lot that
interests the Unnamed Faction that is not objectionable to anyone. So if the
Cousins of the Knight want to advertise for their faction here, fine. I'm
not going to get fussy, but I can see where the post could be taken as a
rejection of the Unnamed Faction as the one representing the relationship
between Nick and LaCroix. Looks like two groups with nearly the same goals
to me.

As LC says (in a very different context) "Ouch".

It might be a good idea to not order direct from GNP Crescendo. If you can
hold out and keep bugging your local record store you create more interest
and possibly bring across some new fans.

It would look bad for FK if stores did finally bring in product and then
couldn't sell it.

Since the CD is in Blockbuster Music here in Austin, Texas, it must be in
Blockbusters in other cities, too. Call them! Blockbuster is really good
about holding stuff for you, so even though the store may have only one
copy, they will hold it for you if you ask, so you don't really have to
race other people to the store. Just remind them to order more after you
get yours.

I was really going to wait until the south store near me had it and buy
it there, but I lost control! I went up to the Burnet store last night
and bought it. But the guy at the Burnet store said he'll put it on their
order sheet to get more. It really is an incredible piece of work!

I think LC brought Nick across just because he liked him. As to _why_ he
liked him, well, I like him, so why not? Seriously though, it's hard to
say why two people like each other; it's often hard for people to say just
why they like the people they like.

Besides that though, I think LaCroix thought Nick was someone he could teach
to be a good vampire. People have described Nick as a "disillusioned"
Crusader. I'm not sure he was ever an "illusioned" Crusader, if he was
forced into the Crusades, but probably LaCroix didn't know that at the time.
So he might have looked to LC like someone who had lost faith not only in
God, but also in man. Such a person might not have too much of a problem
"letting go of his mortal bonds." I don't think LC expected Nick to turn out
to be someone who loved humanity.

Where does the blood served in the Raven come from? Maybe from mortuaries.
Undertakers drain blood from the body in preparation for embalming. That's
where the vampire family in Ray Bradbury's classic short story "Homecoming"
gets their supplies. Also, in Theodore Sturgeon's SOME OF YOUR BLOOD, young
"George" breaks into the back room of the funeral parlor to "say goodbye to
his mother in his own way" by drinking the blood the undertaker has drained
into some sort of container.

Or maybe the Raven just collects discarded (out-of-date) blood from blood
banks. Or maybe both. There ARE ways to get human blood without killing.

I don't think anyone intended to hurt anyone else's feelings, or reject
anybody, but the Unnamed faction, as the name suggests, is not hightly
advertised. Personally, I had never heard of it until after the Cousins of
the Knight announced themselves. You're right, the Unnamed and the CotK do
sound like the same thing, but a lot of us didn't know that until now.
Maybe you should talk on this list more, I would certainly be interested in
hearing *everyone's* opinion, and I'm sure that the people on the list are
grown up enough not to find a relationship (not necessarily sexual) between
two men objectionable :)

That the smile is evil is, of course, my opinion.
The snort however, is audible, and noted in the closed captioning.

Actually, I always read that line in light of this one: "We must never
forget *what* we are, or *who* we came from." Founder of the Light
Cousins as I am, I do not see any of that "Light" in the Nightcrawler's
NiQ broadcasts. He is reminiscing about his relationship with his
Nicholas, yes, but he is as firm as ever about his position being the
correct one. What immediately precedes the line Margie cites is, "Lost
friends. Lost from each other, lost from themselves." LaCroix is telling
Nick that the way back to himself (Nick) is through him (LC).

The groups are similar, but the distinction is a very important one. Some
of us are, for one reason of another, extremely put off by the "romantic"
element that the UF is willing to discuss. I don't wish to offend
anybody, but, yes, I'm one of those it bothers -- on Nick and Fleur's
behalfs, mainly. I don't like the idea of the UF any more than Laurie
likes the idea of the N&Npack; I am comfortable with the Cousins of the
Knight, however.

Just, as you all tend to say, my two cents.

I'll be off line from now through July 5. Have a great week, all. :-)
