Not that I can recall. Janette, on the other hand, seems to view the relationship this way. She states that they are both 'children of LaCroix'. Someone else mentioned that she told Nick "He's your father. He loves you." The viewpoint is, then, not foreign to Nick, he just doesn't verbalize it. Then again, there are a lot of things Nick doesn't verbalize. <g> The fact that LaCroix and Janette see the relationship this way suggests to me that over their collective history it has been treated that way. The fact that Nick coexisted with them for so long also suggests that he, on some level, agreed with this arrangement. Levin/Stormsinger" <wabbit@e.......> Subject: Re: The Father Thing I don't think Nick would refer to LaCroix as his "father" for a couple of reasons: First, if LaCroix is his "father", then, in the terms of the society that Nick grew up in, he has certain obligations to LaCroix and LaCroix has certain rights over him in return. Filial disobedience was a *serious* breach of conduct in the 13th century, and the child's obligations did not even end with the parent's death, if those obligations were so stated as to continue beyond that point (like "take care of your sister", or "John Doe will never step foot on my land" -- even if you and John Doe saved each other's lives in the Crusades and are best buddies). Second, to put a "relational" tone on the vampiric relationship would give it a "legitimacy" which Nick has been avoiding like the plague for 800 years. Sort of like swearing fealty, I suspect. If Nick starts admitting that LaCroix is his "father", vampirism becomes less something that was thrust upon him and he should fight, and more something he ought to accept and deal with. (Sure, he said yes, but did he really realize *what* he was saying yes to? I don't think so! "Live forever" wasn't the *half* of it!) Now, as to how he *feels* about LaCroix -- father is *definitely* part of it. He's always running to LC for advice and info. Look at the scene in the Raven in Fever! Absolutely -- although he says that to Fleur, but in the same conversation goes on about innocence and evil (in relation to bringing Fleur over) which makes me think that maybe he was putting the best face on it for his baby sister. >Do the flashbacks in SoB take place during the Inquisition (some History >minor *I* am!)? Oh, very definitely. The garb suggests late 1400's or very early 1500's (were they wearing ruffs? I'll have to go look again, but I think it was lace collars, which is earlier), although the focus of the Inquisitors suggests a little later than that, after Malleus Malificarum has been disseminated and accepted, changing the thrust of the Inquisition from heresy to magic. Uh, for those who don't know, Malleus Malificarum (I think I spelled that right), or in English "The Hammer of the Witches" was a horrid piece of *fiction*, purporting to be truth, written by a pair of overzealous Dominican monks with ambitions. It was through the "evidence" in this charming piece of literature that the witchhunts began, which brought about the deaths of several *million* women and men (mostly women) over the next three hundred years. Prior to the publication of MM, and the Church's acceptance of same as "factual", the thrust of the Inquisition was against various worldly and impure practices (like art, and amassing wealth which you did not pass on to the Church), as well as somewhat more esoteric points of Church theology. The end result was the same however -- torture and death. The Inquisition was not big on things like innocence, and would have laughed at the idea of material evidence or "innocent until proven guilty". >I don't know if he regrets it by then, but he and LC don't seem *too* >adversarial in those >flashbacks. Folks, the timeline on the Sony site IS Valerie's timeline! Subject: An Amalgam Hi all-- Just a few questions and minor ramblings. Sorry to toss them all together, but my ISP is a PITA sometimes and I have to get everything in one post... 1) Did we ever establish if Miklos was a vampire? (Sorry, I know this is probably old hat.) 2) This is a YKYBWTMFK sort of thingie: I was watching the news about a small city upstate New York (right across Lake Erie or Lake Ontario - not far from Toronto) where restaurants are overwhelming the community. One was named *Natalie's*. And I thought to myself: "So, that's where they went after..." Oops, self-censoring LK type spoiler. For those of you who have seen it, you probably understand what I'm getting at. 3) ObFK: Remember that part of GVP that took place in BCE place (what does that stand for anyway?)? Well, this month's issue of National Geographic has a piece on Toronto - and would you believe that the exact building where Nick vamped out in front of is prominent in one picture? There's also a mention of flying toads... don't know how many of you read that Door Story about Nick's flying toad adventure (sorry, again, but I don't remember the author), but I almost had an infarction reading the NGS article. If anyone wants a copy of the article, email me privately; I may be able to scan it. Or you can look it up in the library. It's the June 1996 issue, pp 120-139. 4) An offer: I would be willing to record the next 4 eps of FK on the SCI-FI channel to the first one to reply to me. I'll even graciously remove the commercials. I have all 3rd season, tho' I'm probably going to re-record the ones in which I have commercials. But I have the next 4 eps already comm-free. They are (if SCI-FI shows them in order): Outside the Lines, Blackwing, Blind Faith and My Boyfriend is a Vampire. (altho I understand from the digest that they will not be in order!) 5) Just my little .02 worth on the N&N relationship and the LC&NK relationship: N&N: I happen to think that Natalie read rather more into the bond than there was. Nick admitted to a very deep friendship with her in FitP - remember, he pats her head and says something like: 'some friendships you trust your soul to...' I think Nick saw Nat as his shining goddess of mortality, and a very good friend. From the beginning (OtLonely) Nat was attracted to Nick, even before she knew what he was. So I think Nat loves Nick, but Nick just feels a deep affection (remember the card in OtL?) for Nat. Here in NY there are posters called Poetry in Motion in the subway. One says: Their relationship consisted in discussing if it existed. (Thom Gunn). So we the fans can read whatever we like into it. As for LC & NK - well, vampires are sensuous creatures to begin with. I say there may be some physical attraction between the two of them, but it is largely unexplored. I've read all the opinions that are in the digests, but I haven't come to any steadfast opinions yet. Sorry to ramble. Toni Knightie from NYC (tho after reading Apache's and Storm's fic, I may be a Vaquera soon) "There is nothing impossible in the existence of the supernatural: its existence seems to me decidedly probable." The other explanation is that April14 may have some significance to the Fk crew or Catherine Disher. Inquring minds want to know??? Yes, but isn't it possible Miklos is older than that particular religious symbol, therefore it doesn't bother him. I can't get into supporting arguments w/out a small spoiler for AtA. Janette's biological father abandoned her to prostitution. She probably had no love for him and was ready to transfer whatever filial affection she had to someone who __did__ protect her. Nick had a happy home life and left both parents living. For LaCroix to demand that Nick call him Father would be a grave insult to Nick's real father's memory. LoosCanN kindly supplied me with the full title and author of the book I cited in "How Long Is the Longest Friendship?" It's John Boswell, _Christianity, Homosexuality and Social Intolerance_.. On the subject of what was intended to be Nick and LaCroix's onscreen relationship (as opposed to what actually comes across to viewers), I must acknowledge that we have gotten mixed information from various people connected with the show. Early in the second season, Nigel Bennett sent a long post to FORKNI-L, in which he stated firmly that the relationship was father-son, no sex. OTOH, the script someone recently posted about with the penciled notation, "Licks face?" could only have belonged to NB or GWD, more likely NB. I agree with whoever posted the speculation that TPTB punched up the "father" relationship in the second season and toned down the homoeroticism. As I recently posted, at least one director has acknowleged in private email that he directed them in first season as men who feel a sexual attraction to each other. Someone connected to the show, it might have been James Parriott or one of the directors, responded to an inquiry about the relationship on AOL early last year by posting, "These guys have been around too long not to have tried the other side," which seems to me a very sensible remark.
