We're doing vampire flowcharts now. Oh, my.

Now... if I were going to inject my opinion into this debate, I would say
that a more proper assessment might be to rate the supporting characters
based on the amount of guilt they provoke in Nick. On this scale, Natalie,
Janette and Schanke would have a high guilt factor, whereas Tracy and
Vachon would have a low guilt factor because Nick hasn't had time to
sufficiently screw up their lives yet. <g>

Or you could rate 'em on the flashback factor, basing the rating system on
the quantity and quality of Nick's flashbacks as provoked by the various
characters...

And then there's the ever-shifting 'fault' line, as in, "It's your fault
I'm backsliding" -- who's to blame this week?

Nah, I'm not ragging on Nick. They're all just different expressions of
the same basic issue: the interactions between the characters, or more
precisely, between the supporting characters and Nick. I just think that
the problem is, the balance was perfectly right the first two seasons; and
by removing elements and trying to substitute "opposite" elements, it just
never did quite find the same equilibrium again. There seem to me to be
gaping holes in characterization: things that would've been said or done by
a now-missing character are left unsaid and undone, depriving us of a layer
of depth that we've grown accustomed to. And while the third-season
additions and changes offered a lot of potential for the evolution of a new
direction, a new balance, it's a potential that's gone largely unrealized.

I'm not ragging on third season, either. I've basically liked third
season. I just... could've liked it a whole lot more.

Subject: Re: Vampiric Balance

Interesting diagram, Amy. And a concrete representation of how
changed the focus has become in third season. Although I think I would
diagram first season a little differently:

             Janette Natalie
             ---------------Nick----------------
             LaCroix Schanke

With Nick in the middle of a seesaw balanced on either side by the
pleasures and fears of his past and the hopes and fears of his future
(yes, I think Schanke's lifestyle would scare Nick a little. ;) ).
Amy's diagram with LC at the head of the cross shows how the focus
shifted more to LC in second season (to the detriment of both Nick
and LC, I think, and even to Janette and Nat too).

We started to see more vampires in second season, maybe because TPTB
took our desires to see more vampire activity to heart (I think most
of us meant we wanted to see more about the vampire characters of
LC and Janette). Then, in third season, the decision to get rid of
some characters and bring in others also tended to reinforce the
vampire elements of the show though.

I think the new pattern might be similar to a Star of David (and I
am not going to draw it, but hope that description will suffice).
Nick is still in the center. Starting at the top point and moving
clockwise are LC, Urs, Nat, Tracy, Screed, and Vachon. This puts
LC, Nat and Screed on one triangle and Vachon, Urs, and Tracy on
the other triangle. Now, in the first part of third season, I think
the attempt was made to turn the star upside down and put Tracy on
top to focus more on her triangle than on Nick. I think we can all
agree that we got some overkill on Tracy's character as a result.
Later in the season, the star got turned back upright again and the
focus improved. But LC is *still* on top and Nick has been
backsliding more. BTW, in case you're wondering I put Screed on
the triangle for battle for more direct battle for Nick because, as
someone mentioned, Screed was existing as a vampire without normally
feeding on people, and also because Screed apparently had some
religious beliefs (his comment about "watching out for me" when he
found the white rat in Fever). Tracy is part of her own triangle
with Urs and Vachon because I believe that the original intent was
to have Vachon vacillate between the two women.

Tracy doesn't seem to mind that Vachon is a vampire because her view
of vampires probably is "romantic" due to media influences (imo,
anyway), plus I think she's very attracted to Vachon. But her
acceptance of Vachon *does*, as Amy says, make it seem like Nat is
the only one really representing the mortal viewpoint for Nick
anymore. And he's been more involved with other vampires (and done
more backsliding) this season.

But if we examine our favorite episodes from this season, I think
most of us agree that they are the ones that center on Nick (Night
in Question, Sons of Belial), although there are others that haven't
that are interesting too (Fever).

Oooh! And if humans have PMS for seven days before a period (conservative
estimate), then she'd have PMS for thirteen years! Maybe that's why LC
brought Nick across roughly 200 years after Janette--she was on her third

I would agree with this statement completely. The balance between the
supporting characters as they influenced Nick kept Nick right in the middle.
Any drop in the pull in any one direction, and Nick would go sailing in the
other. Going with the original chart of Janette opposite Nat and Schanke
opposite LC, when Schanke died and Janette left, Nick was pulled into a
tug-of-war between Nat and LC. We see this sort of oppostion in NiQ and
SoB. Enter Tracy and Vachon, who Nick sees as a mirror of himself and Nat
and tries to keep Tracy from being hurt as much as Nick (thinks he) is
hurting Nat. Nick, in this case, becomes (oddly enough) very LaCroixian in
his thinking, threatening Vachon if he brings Tracy across. So while Nick
is torn between Nat and LC, Vachon is torn between Tracy and Nick.

Is it possible that Nick is more like LaCroix than he would ever admit?

A Vaquera delurking here.

Does anyone know if the episodes being shown on SciFi (espcially Season 1
and 2) are going to be cut/shaved to make room for more commercials (a la
the original Star Trek)? Or are they going to be shown intact. I intend to
tape all of them, but don't want to if I know they are going to shave
seconds off scenes to fit in more commercials. Or, hopefully, are they
going to be commercial free?

Thanks.

Same reason ~most~ Daddies are happy their son is sucking face with a

Nick was trying to have a realtionship (read: one night stand) with one of

umm...in this case your theory doesn't fit, since the plane DIDN'T crash!
The plane was blown up in mid air, and seeing as it had just left Pearson, I

Wait a sec. How big is the blast going to be? We're talking about a
music box here, not a suitcase full of C-4. The fuel tanks may not be
within the blast area. Vudu wanted to bring down the plane. He only had

love that expression!) would have been a relief.

On the contrary. It would be a SERIOUS problem, and once that just might
bring the enforcers in.

Hi All!

Alright, now you get -my- $0.02 on Vampiric Balance.
Bear with me on this one, folks . . . it's -really- long (for me). :^)

I think it's a (very appropriate, mind you) Tree of Life.

Behold!

                 o - Janette
                / \
              / \
Lacroix - o - - - o - Nick

Screed - o - - - o - Vachon
              \ /
                \ /
                 o - Tracy

Crooks - o - - - o - Nat
              \ /
                \ /
                 o - the Captain
                 |
                 o - us

Notes: To the right are the "good" guys: Nick, Vachon, and Nat.
In the center are the "neutrals": Janette, Tracy, the Captain and us.
To the left are the "evils": LaCroix, Screed, and the Crook of the week.

The top triangle are the major vamps: Nick, Janette, and LaCroix.
The center triangle are the minor vamps linked together by the one
mortal that knows their secret (thus linking them to the mortals).
The bottom triangle are the mortals. Their roots spring from us.

Now the explanation. This may get a little strange at times, so bear
with me. The top triangle is bound together by their blood, both
figuratively (they are, to all intents and purposes, a family, IMHO)
and literally - in more ways than one. Nick is the "good" vamp for
obvious reasons. Janette is the neutral vamp - for most of the shows
that she was in, she didn't take sides. LaCroix is the "evil" vamp.

Their lives are intertwined with each other - Nick to LaCroix and
Janette, LaCroix to Nick and Janette, and Janette to LaCroix and Nick.

The second triangle is pretty much the same. Vachon is a "lesser"
Nick, a Vamp that is just beginning to learn the ropes of being "good",
so he goes under Nick. Tracy, believe it or not, is a "lesser" Janette,
one who has a mortal role in life. She also represents Janette as a
mortal, but since she is in this "lesser" role, she has not realized her
true position on the Tree. Screed -represents- the "bad" Vampires, the
ones that aren't even using mortals for food, and thus, he is a "lesser"
LaCroix. He is a distorted mirror image of LaCroix, a "poor man's"
vamp, if you will. Since LaCroix makes such a great vampire, Screed
makes a "bad" example to and/or for vamps in general.

The third triangle is the mortals. Nat on the side of good, and thus
representing, in a way, mortal sides of both Nick and Vachon, and thus
is a "lesser" version of either of them. This does -not- mean that
she is a lesser person - far from it. In her role she shows us, in her
own way, what Nick and/or Vachon could be like. The Captain, whoever
"it" may be, is the neutral party standing between good (here represented
by Nat) and evil (here represented by the crooks :^). The crooks show
us that both Screed and LaCroix have their human side, and also show that
neither is -truly- evil.

And, of course, we are at the bottom of the Tree, feeding it. We
represent not only the viewers (that nourish the show) but the victims
(who nourish the Vamps) as well.

Of course, your milage on my whole theory may vary greatly....

:^)

There is that. <gryn>

I need to sit down with the episode guide, and watch these in order. We've
been skipping thru the order my son finds interesting, and it's playing hell
with my continuity.

The sound you hear is my theory biting the dust.

OK, I concede. It was a vampire in the back room in SoB. You all are just
much smarter than I, so I shall pack my bags and go home. (Wait... I am
home! *This* is my home!)

My other unpopular theory (no, not that one): In Black Buddha Pt 1, what
happened to Claire (the blonde on the Titanic who no one could remember the
name of). Everyone I've talked to thinks that Nick killed her. I think he
brought her across.

1. He didn't believe she was responsible for the disaster.
2. She had explicitly asked for immortality.
3. He hadn't killed anyone in about 20 years by that point (OK, he killed
two "traitors" in OtLines thirty years later, but that was in the nature on
an execution).

How about this one?

I believe The Brows in Question have been noticeable for
quite a while now, especially after the demise of the "Forever
Vetter" version of this season. <I> first became aware of
their power of distraction while viewing "Games Vampires
Play."

Anyone else? When <did> Uncle's brows begin to take on a
life of their own? :) Was it demonic influence (the Brows
of Belial)? Did a piece of Vachon's mane escape, fleeing
across the bar to take residence on LC's forehead?
Inquiring minds want to know!
