I am amazed that I managed to get Sandra's well-supported opinion down to four lines. :) BB (well, *that* BB) is another one I've yet to see, but apparently it invalidates the theory of carouches as masterless. However, we know how Nick feels about carouches, so we can assume that he doesn't think he is one... can it really come down to "vermin"? I'm happy with the idea that Vachon brought Screed across, inadvertently or not, but this whole "lower order of vampire" thing still bothers me. Carouches as "mistakes"? I've been thinking... (quick, everyone, run for cover!) As you all know (or should), Warm Fuzzies (in the form of magnets) were sent to the cast & crew in Toronto during the last days of filming. There was also a "limited edition" of Warm Fuzzies Affiliation Pins that went with me on the Toronto excursion to see Deb in 'Winter's Tale' in February -- a bag of which went to the set. I have pledged to do a batch of Warm Fuzzies for the SciFi Channel -- shortly; I do not have the resources to create Warm Fuzzies at this time, which is why there won't be any at the Shrew excursion. {Sorry.} However. I was thinking about maybe doing a special run of "computer fuzzies" for the list. Since computers are the one thing we all have in common. And the Warm Fuzzies did start *here*... What I need to know is this. How many people would be willing to send $1.00 (cost of materials) plus a self-addressed padded mailer (small-sized mailer, with maybe .52 in stamps on it) in order to get a Warm Fuzzy of their very own? I may or may not be able to actually do this; but I need to get an idea of numbers before I actually volunteer to do this insane thing. And yes, a decent-sized fuzzy costs about a buck to make. (Well, actually it's something like ninety-two cents. I am NOT going to deal with ninety-two cent money orders!) If I do this thing, it will not be a profit-making venture in any way, shape or form. And if by some miracle I end up with any scrap of money left over, it'll go to Pediatric Aids, I promise. More likely, it'll come out as a loss. So. (puke) Oh...my...G O D D E S S !!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, I gave Aaron Spelling the benefit of the doubt and decided to watch it. Let's just say that us FK fans are in no danger whatsoever from this show taking over the Vampire fan base. It is the worst piece of crap I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. I mean pilots are invariably bad but this takes the cake AND the entire bakery besides. <sigh> where to begin? Well, firstly everyone looks like a model. Even the Nosferatu! None of the clans look or act the way they're supposed to in the RPG, not to mention that for some reason all the vampires seem to be able to eat, smoke and have sex...plus the Nosferatu seem to be fixated with works of art and spiffy clothes, a trait usually reserved for the Toreadors. Next there's the...subtlety? what subtlety? I didn't see any...Everything is rammed into your skull with a sledgehammer from the ominous music as yonder BLACK car drives by, to the ever-present red roses that seem to spring up everywhere, to the poor fleeing (vampiric but you couldn't tell) heroine in Virginal White. Then we have the dialogue which is woodenly performed by really bad actors, people who have obviously never heard of Vampire:the Masquerade in their lives, much less READ it...they utter the "lingo" of clans and blood hunts and Masquerades but clearly have no idea what the hell they're talking about. Everything is explained, in detail, to us idiots who can't follow a plot without help. And the casting people obviously wanted Antonio Banderas and Arnold Schwarzenegger but couldn't afford them so we've got look-alikes! Yippee! Down to the classic widow's peak. The only cliche they missed out on was "I vant to suck your blood". And the best part is that the Ventrue Prince, "Julian Luna" (ack gag barf) looks and acts far more like a Giovanni than anything else! In conclusion, if I were to rate it from one to ten I'd have to go to fractions. This is on its own, with no comparison made to FK whatsoever. The whole thing is one long cliche and I was moaning in pain the whole way. I am now going to spend the next couple of days trying to find something to tape over this...thing. Well...maybe not. In Bad Blood, LC attacks the mortal Jack the Ripper and Jack's blood is so bad or evil that it makes LC sick, so sick that he even gets Janette to help him (he wants her to go get him fresh blood after apparently sending her to fetch Nick). LC asks Nick to go and make sure that the barber is dead and has not been brought across. Nick doesn't want to (he tells LC he's leaving for America the next day), but Nick *does* go and find the man lying in the street (or alley). But Nick doesn't do anything and leaves. As soon as he leaves, Jack opens up his eyes. Jack, now, was probably already disturbed when he was brought over, but in present-day Toronto he commits some brutal murders (rips people apart like an animal). Since LC was sick and wanted Nick to go make sure Jack wasn't made a vampire, I doubt sincerely whether Jack got any sort of "training" as a vampire. Vachon, too, doesn't seem to be the sort to want to be a "strict" parent like LC. Jack was masterless, I think, and I suspect Vachon would have been "loose" with his children too. >Carouches as "mistakes"? Well, what about Nick's mistakes as master? >What about the theory about LC not having taught N & J how to bring >them across properlly? :) Well, none of Nick's children went for animal blood, I don't think. Nick gave Richard cow blood, but he later murdered some people. Nick's "mistakes" may have something to do with not keeping a close watch on his children or maybe he just happened to bring across the wrong people for the wrong reasons. One of Nick's children *has* survived and apparently done okay (Serena in second season's Crazy Love--oops, Baby, Baby). The theory about LC not having taught N & J how to bring people across properly might not have any effect on how N & J behave as vampires. I would suspect LC just wouldn't have wanted them to be increasing the family without his say so. Whatever other guidance LC has given them has apparently made them standard vampires, not carouches. Being a carouche may be more of a "social stigma" amongst vampires. Maybe most vampires just find the whole idea of a vampire that feeds on animals and especially *vermin* disgusting in a vampire that does so on a regular basis. --Sandra Gray, forever Knightie --tmp_harkins@d....... Note I say *liked*. I *LOVE* FK, but I *liked* Kindred. Admitting that the clans seemed to all have the same powers, which is canon for FK, but not for V:tM, and that the symbolism in Kindred was far more obvious and strained than FK, I still think of vampires as being dark, sensual beings, and Kindred expressed that quite well, I think. This is something I have missed in FK of late, about the time that Janette vanished from the scene. Janette was a sensual creature through and through, yet lurking behind that sensuality lurked a Beast just out of reach. I fell in love with that from the first episode I saw. Kindred has given this back to me in the form of the Toreador Primogen; this woman is deliciously evil as only LaCroix could pull off. She needs *lessons* from LaCroix, I will admit, but she's well on her way to being quite wonderfully wicked in her own right. My view is that K:tE and FK should not be held to the same standards of judgement. FK is (and I'll get disagreed with for saying this) a lone vampire struggling to overcome adversity and reach his ultimate goal of salvation. K:tE is about vampires doing what they do best: being vampires. There is no human standard of morality imposed on the vampires of the SF Camarilla like Nick has imposed on himself. There is no "repaying society for his sins" in K:tE. For those of you who watch FK for that struggle for redemption, K:tE is not for you, you are correct. For those of you that watch FK because of a fascination with vampires, as I do, I would urge you to give K:tE a(nother) chance. To me, this is what vampires *are*. The show isn't perfect by far. There are several things I have problems with (Ventrue with Protean?!) but I still think it was a good show that, if viewed objectively, without comparision to FK, could be entertaining. I would never renounce FK for Kindred EVER!!! I like them both, but I like them both for very different reasons. Stake away... the sun rises soon. Straying from your mind into your left shoulder, just coz I can, The "New and Improved" L'Phantom Now a Cousin in full standing! http://bsc.edu/~jrarmstr/ Help Save Forever Knight! First she buys Oatmeal Crisp cereal and places it in the cupboard, so I all unknowing, will pull it out at 6am and ruin my day by making me laugh before 10am. She of course protests her innocence. Then, this morning, I leave for work and right outside the door is...Calla Lilies!! I call her at work to find out what the heck she's doing, but before I can ask she says "You sound so Perky this morning!" PERKY! ackkk! if that is'nt enough to ruin a Cousinly sort of persons day. She of course again denies that she did any of this on purpose. My fault I guess, I was the one who brought her across. *sigh* BTW, Calla Lilies have hardly any scent at all, and what they do have is not that pleasant.
