I am in digest land. I did not realize there were so many interpretations of Lacroix' actions. I will be using words such as "domination", "master" and "slave". No sexual activity is implied. My take on Lacroix. I have always seen Lacroix as a man of power. One does desire the Emperors seat without desiring the power that goes with it. Lacroix (to me) was a leader, man of power, a master. I can see him having devoted troops with many of them willing to die at his command. Lacroix enjoys his power and has learned to use it over the years. As far as a vamp masters go. In the FK world, I did not think that the one who does the bringing over is automatically the master. The show hints at it but never nails anything down. I saw Lacroix as the master of Nick and Jeanette because he made himself the master. He has invested much time and effort on them. Losing them would be an annoyance as well as a personal failure. Lacroix and Jeanette. I believe that someone mentioned that Jeanette was nothing more than a slave to her father and later her husband and 'pimp' (don't know the 12century equivalent). True. Lacroix may have observed her for a long time possibly 'rented' her for an evening. I think he saw in her anger over her powerless situations. This anger could be honed and used to create a new master. Keep the position of women in that society in mind. Sometimes slaves make the best masters. "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (Police) line "When you find your servant is your master". I could go into the whole psychology of the thing but, I think everyone gets the major point. He would still be her master but, he could watch her flourish with her new found power. Lacroix and Nick. I did not see Lacroix' 'evil deeds' done from fear of losing but, more out of a show of his power and control. His physical power as well as his power over Nick. It seems as if he is still trying to 'break' him. I think I have prattled on long enough. More later. Victoria vscott@s....... And >before you ask, I did indeed inquire of the listowner some months back >about this and this is official. What? This can't be right. Discussions are permitted without spoiler space after the show has gone out on satellite feed? I have a strong hunch that most people here don't have satellite dishes. But anyhow, those episodes on the spoiler list have always had the spoiler space protection. Somebody is confused here. I slipped up on Human Factor (it was a minor slip up) and I was told by a list-admin (I think she is the second in command) that spoilers protection apply until the SECOND showing. My slip up was thinking one week after an episode has aired is sufficient to go off of spoiler protection. IMOH that is a bit excessive, but I'm willing to follow the rules, but to make a claim that spoilers spaces don't apply after it shown on a satellite feed is just a step away from viewing it off as it leaves the production studio. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 16:48:32 -0500 From: Margie Hammet <treeleaf@i.......> Subject: Re: Assorted threads and Questions >The rules are that as soon as a new show has gone out ON >THE SATELLITE FEED we can discuss it without spoiler space. It took a while to get to me, but it was well worth the wait. The music is great. Simply great. Lori Yates' vocals on her songs are wonderful. This is now the pride and joy of my collection, and that's saying something. I have over 130+ CDs, many of them multiple-disc sets. The FK CD *will not* leave the house. If my friends ask me for it, I'll be happy to make them a copy on-site in my condo. But it stays there. I will not risk anything happening to this; it means that much to me. The Nightcrawler bits are perfect. My hat is off to Nigel for writing the material, and doing it so well. Ger shows that he could have made a name for himself playing piano professionally. I also would like to add a hearty "Yes!" to the person who suggested a CD of all-Ger piano stuff. Hearing him play "Moonlight Sonata" would be great. The CD is also seeing a lot of use for writing FK fic and JADFE fic. The rough drafts of parts 3 and 4 of "Homecoming" were written while listening to the disc, and I think it's helped me to capture more of the FK mood. I'm especially enamored of the piece -- I think it's called -- "Nat cries". It's in one of the suites to an episode. Once again, I heartily encourage everyone involved with producing the CD to take a well-deserved bow. You've earned it in spades. Alright - I need to let off some steam. First, I'm very upset over the fact my cable company (Continental Cablevision) refuses to have the Sci-Fi Channel as part of its programming. God knows I have called them enough to let them know that they should add it. Though I was somewhat grateful that the woman I spoke to did say that she would pass it along to the proper people (she was actually writing it down). Second, I've noticed that USA :-( has stopped airing FK, but the FOX network :-) is still showing reruns. Is FOX going to show the new episodes, or are they only going to show it on the SF Channel? Third, I've noticed from some previous posts people talking about an episode called "Games Vampires Play". Was this one of the new episodes or have I completely lost my mind and somehow missed this episode. Fourth - don't worry, I'm getting there - has anyone heard if there are going to be videos of the show or is TriStar or whoever still not selling the rights. I haven't seen any of the first season and only the second half of the second season. Fifth. Just kidding :-) I think that's it for now. Hope to hear from someone soon. Lisa P.S. I lied. There is a fifth. Having listened to the FK CD over and over, I was wondering if there is a kind soul out there who could tell me the lyrics of the songs sung by Lori Yates. I think my brain is rebelling against me and is not allowing me to understand all the words. Someone can privately e-mail me for this question if it's going to take up too much space on the list. First, let me say that I don't usually don't post things like this, because I am usually so humbled by everyone else's insight. But, I have read with interest all of the various comments about how and why LaCroix is like he is, and I have to disagree that he behavior is defendable. (Warning, this is kind of long.) The very first episode of FK I ever watched was BMV--and I had no idea what the show was about other than some sort of "vampire/cop." (I was totally ready to laugh it off--now look at me!<VBG>) I do admit to having preconceived notions about vampires being evil (though I have to admit the discussions on this list have broadened my horizons), and I thought then and still do, that Nick is right in his search for redemption (heck, even Janette admitted this much). Well, my first impression of LaCroix was - "geez he's one mean SOB" and I haven't changed my mind much since then. After my initial exposure, I was treated to the entire 1st season and the second season episodes I'd missed, via Cousin Laura (for which I am eternally in her debt!). Even after the extensive FK filmfest, I still maintained that LaCroix is not a nice being. He's self centered, manipulative, selfish and cruel. I don't believe he was in love with Fleur--she was just one more being he could control (and taking her would be one more way he could annoy Nick). I don't believe LaCroix remembers what love is--or if he ever experienced true love while he was a mortal. In the Divia flashback, he's hanging out at a brothel--I don't know, but I doubt anyone would find true love there and he doesn't seem to have had such a relationship with his own father that would have lent itself to any sort of parental love. I accept that the fear of being along is what motivates LaCroix--after 2000 years, he still doesn't have anyone he can call a friend--it appears that he hasn't established any other permanent relationships other than his ties to Nick and Janette--that's scary. (Could he be just a little envious of Nick's mortal associations?) Perhaps he likes the idea of loving Nick, but is either incapable or afraid of feeling the emotion. I think he still considers Nick a possession--sort of the way the men of his (mortal) time viewed women--something nice to have around, but let's don't take them seriously. I have never seen him show any respect for Nick's thoughts or feelings. Which brings me, in a round about way, to Nick and Janette's inability to successfully bring anyone else across. While their natural instincts as vampires may enable them to perform the act, they have no klew (sorry, couldn't resist) about what to do with their fledglings. LaCroix never bothered to show them how to do it correctly. Why should he? If Nick or Janette succeeded in controlling those they bring over it would only jeopardize their familial relationship with LaCroix. They would not be his, exclusively. Which is not to say, I don't like LaC. He is the perfect antagonist to Nick's protagonist. And Nigel does a splendid job of acting the part. I like the third season LaCroix--it seems as if, after 800 years, he's finally decided that the best way to Nick's heart is, well, through his heart. Finally, I've always wondered why "they" would name Nick's nemesis "LaCroix" (the cross). Could it be that LaCroix is Nick's "cross to bear?" Okay, I'm off of my soapbox. No flames, please, Cousins...I still respect everyone else's opinions! Anyway, some of the ideas we've come up with have been: red hots, sweet tarts, Hershey's kisses, M&Ms (with or without peanuts or almonds), sips of cranberry-grape juice (which is what I swear they use for the blood on the show--the color and consistency are just right . . .), or even (if in the appropriate company) put on lots of clothes and jewelry and play it like strip poker. Once they're shown (and yes, on satellite feed) they are regular FKSPOILR material-- i.e. they need to stay on the spoiler list (and that includes no quotes in your .sig on posts anywhere else!) and have the ep name (and no actual spoiler info) in the subject line. > I slipped up on Human Factor (it was a minor slip up) and I was told by > a list-admin (I think she is the second in command) that spoilers protection > apply until the SECOND showing. No, here's the difference between spoiler _protection_ (being on the FKSPOILR list) and spoiler _space_ (extra linefeeds for added protection). What you've said above is indeed the rule about keeping ep discussion on the spoiler list. But once they've shown once, the extra, special-case spoiler _linefeeds_ can cease. If at all. :^( Sorry, I have to have some sort of cutoff point. Anyone else who has a copy of it and wants to jump in to take requests, feel free. I'd estimate that I've sent out 60 or so of the transcripts so far. It's obvious that the chat room would have had a lot more people in it if there had been more warning. :^( BTW, hopefully those of us seeing Ger in "Taming of the Shrew" this weekend will be able to send a report or two from Toronto! If your Fox station has been showing FK all along, then it will show the last four eps as well. Games Vampires Play is a third season episode which has only aired once. It should be airing again after the last four eps. air. As far as releasing the series as videos - don't hold your breath for that one. > Dotti R Knightie 4-Ever dottir@w....... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 20:57:26 -0400 From: Marcia Tucker <ScFiMarci@a.......> Subject: Jon Cassar and AOL Chat Thanks for all of you who came to the AOL Forever Knight Chat last night for the visit from Jon Cassar to talk about "Dead of Night"! Unfortunately, Jon was a no-show, but this evening this note was in my box: >>Hi Marci Sorry I didn't make it last night. I did try, but I really got hung up. I'm quickly getting ready to go to LA to direct two episodes of BAYWATCH NIGHTS. I promise I'll make it up to you. Jon Cassar<< So I wrote Jon back saying he could make it up to us by meeting with us on May 13 after (presumably) "Ashes to Ashes" airs, which he also directed! We'll see if he takes the bait, otherwise I'm sure we'll get him back at some point in time. Stay tuned! (Fred Mollin says he'll be back in June for sure, BTW!) Hmmm, interesting idea. I've always seen him as a man of action rather than a man of power. While he was a general and commanded troops, his orders, whether he liked it or no, came from a higher power. He had power in battle, but did he have power in his personal life? In AMPH, Seline basically cuts him off and tells him he has to wait, and Divia looks at him with a smirk and walks away. IMHO, he may have had command of men in his military life, but in his personal life he seemed softer and more prone to acceptance of the dictates of others. Of course, I happen to believe that at the heart of every powerful man, is a little boy that is struggling to gain the acceptance and approval of the masses. Politics, afterall, whether early Roman or current day, is little more than a popularity contest. Victoria continues: >I saw Lacroix as the master of Nick and Jeanette because he made >himself the master. He has invested much time and effort on them. >Losing them would be an annoyance as well as a personal failure. In Father's Day, LaCroix says "You are my creature Nicholas -- made in my image." I think that this tends to imply that the creator vampire is in fact the master figure -- parental figure, God figure, whatever. There has been much discussion about Nick's failures at successfully bringing others across. In my view, it is specifically because he refuses to take the master role and keep the new born vampires in check. The first hunger, as we saw in Fever, is not something that is easily controlled. The new vampire needs to have the guidance and restraint of a master in order to prevent then from running muck across the countryside -- like Richard, the leper woman, the doctor, etc. IMVH, I think in his own way that LaCroix loves both Nicholas & Janette. I think we've seen his love for them clearly, especially in 2nd and 3rd season. To use Father's Day again :) LaCroix allows the grandson to go free and turns Don Constantine into a vamp specifically because of what Nicholas said to him. In essense, he was giving in to Nicholas's wishes. At the end, he also says those truly overused lines, "If you love something set it free, etc. etc. etc." He is, in effect, saying that he is willing to try to allow Nick his freedom and hope that in the long run that Nick will come back. We see this type of behavior in SoB as well. He goes against everything he believes in to bring Nick to the exorcist. With Janette, since they don't interact all that much it's much harder to convey, but the scene between them in HF seemed to convey an awful lot of caring on LaCroix's part. I can hear the Knighties screaming at me already, but I honestly believe that LaCroix loves Nick and Janette. I would also go so far as to say that LaCroix is the only character who has been allowed a great deal of growth through the seasons. He started out extremely one-dimensional -- your typical evil character. But now he seems more, I can't believe I'm going to say this, human. There is a depth of feeling and generosity that definitely was not there in first season, IMVH. >I did not see Lacroix' 'evil deeds' done from fear of losing but, >more out of a show of his power and control. His physical power >as well as his power over Nick. It seems as if he is still trying >to 'break' him. This could be possible if he actually won what he wanted by enacting his evil deeds. I don't personally believe that he truly has power over Nick. I think that he *really* wants to have some form of power over Nick. I think that we can all agree that if he's been trying to break Nick for several hundred years and still hasn't, then Nick is the one with the power not LaCroix. Technically, this is true of all love relationships. It is the loved that hold the power, not the lover (platonic or otherwise). The lover (LaCroix) is striving to gain something (the acceptance and companionship of Nick), the loved (Nick) has the *power* to give it or withhold it (which he does with unerring annoyance I might add :)). I guess I better shut up before I turn this into a book :) Great discussion guys! I brought my best friend Vickie <waving at you!> over at the start of third season. She just posted her first note to the list and I would like to second some of what she said: >But I have really enjoyed this list, the people are so nice and friendly, smart >intelligent and caring people. I hope that we never give up hope on FK and that >the list will stay on and on. I can't imagine what life would be like without the list. Here, here, Vickie! I, for one, enjoyed the silliness of two Saturdays ago, but then I don't pay by the line. I've been with the list for five months now and get serious withdrawal if I'm gone from it for more than a day. We have many warm and caring people here, some of whom I have personally corresponded with. I've made many very good personal friends thanks to this list. One of the reasons I don't post often is the fear of being torn down for an unpopular opinion. The list shouldn't invoke that kind of fear. Usually it doesn't. I realize the list is experiencing growing pains, but I believe it will settle back to its familiar friendly self soon. The list should be a place where even the shyest of us feel free to express our opinions.
