Any Roman history buffs out there?? Well, I know there are more expert people out there (I seem to recall someone-- Lisa McDavid?-- doing a brilliant analysis) but I figured I'd throw in my $.02 before I toddled off to bed. I'll probably get part of it wrong, but I'm counting on someone out there to correct me. :) Yes, the Romans used family names. They also used patronymics (names that indicate who your father is) In that respect, ancient Rome was rather like modern Russia, where the name pattern is <personal (baptismal) name><patronymic> <family name> So for example: Nikolai Lucienovich Brabant <g> is Nicholas, son of Lucien, of the family Brabant. In Latin, Decimus Junius Juvenalis is Decimus (which means tenth!) Junius' son, of the house of Juvenalis. (He was a Roman emperor, I believe). The depressing part is the women's names. Upper-crust Roman fathers frequently named their daughters the female version of their name, followed by a number! So, if your father was Julius, and you had two sisters, you'd be Julia Prima, Julia Secunda, and Julia Tertia! Yuck! As I said, I probably messed it up, but that's how I remember it.... G'nite! So those who are interested in the Prodigy chat log have two options: 1 - ask me for a copy now, knowing that you'll have to get a complete log at a later date when someone else offers one or the official transcript becomes available, or 2 - wait patiently for the full chat log to become available. At various times we did see pictures of what looked like her family. One was an older couple, probably her parents, both of whom were Asian. Another was supposed to be her daughter, also Asian or possibly half-Asian. My theory was that Cohen was a married name, but we were never told that, either. Personally, I was bored by Cohen much of the time because the writers never did enough with her. Nigel Bennett said at some con that Natsuko never got a chance and I think she was right. As for my favorites, I like Reese, but the larger-than-life (in more senses than one <g>) Stonetree is still my favorite. Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." Lisa McDavid mcdavid-lisa@s....... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 09:01:39 EDT From: Lisa McDavid <D020214@u.......> Subject: Roman names Believe it or not, this is a complicated subject. On second thought, of course it's complicated. I'm involved with it. <sarcasm off.> Diane Echelbarger is close -- thanks for the compliment, Diane, I'm still blushing -- but remembers incorrectly about the patronymic. Romans not only had family names, they had a three name system of names for individual men's names. We'll get to women in a moment. You have to know about men's names to understand about Roman women's. I'm going to use Caesar as an example: Gaius Julius Caesar. The first element was the praenomen. This is the first name, the man's given name. There were only a small number of praenomena in use by LaCroix's time. Lucius is a praenomen. It has to be the character's given name. Gaius was Caesar's praenomen. The next name is the nomen. This is sometimes referred to as a family name, but actually it's the name of the gens (something like a Scottish clan) to which the indvidual belonged. Julius was Caesar's nomen. He was a member of the gens Julius. The final element is the cognomen. Originally this was an individual nickname. Some cognomena became hereditary among the descendants of the original bearer of the nickname. (Rather like Scottish clans again: e.g., MacDonald of Glencoe and MacDonald of the Isles.) To complicate matters, sometimes later cognomena were still the nickname of the individual. It was possible to have more than one cognomena. Caesar was Caesar's cognomen. In his case, it was an heredity cognomen which designated his branch of the Julians. So, Gaius Julius Caesar means Gaius of the gens Julius's branch Caesar. Women's names originally seem to have been the name of the gens for the oldest, followed by numbers for the later daughters. Caesar's only daughter was named Julia. If he had had a second daughter, her name would have been Julia Secunda (second.) By the time of the empire -- which is when Lucius/LaCroix was a mortal -- women's names had stopped following a set pattern. The nomen in a feminine form was still used, but most women also had a praenomen, which came from a larger pool than the men's. Sometimes a woman's name might be a combination of her mother and father's nomena, e.g. Julia Valeria (a one parent from the gens Julius and one from Valerius.) There was no set order in a woman's name. Note: the nomena were not used as personal names for women outside the gens. Divia was illegitimate, so we can *NOT* conclude that Lucius's nomena was Divius. Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." I just read Ger's chat over on Mr. Happy's page (I just love that name) and wouldn't you know, the first thing out of his keyboard is his concern over the lunatic fringe who can't separate the character from the actor. What is it with these people? Where do they come from? I simply can't fathom anyone ANYONE going up to Ger or Nigel or Adrian or Leonard Nimoy or ANY actor and expecting to have a conversation with a character on television. It just doesn't register in my brain cells that there could be someone walking around on two legs that simply cannot separate the two. I personally have never met one (thank God or there'd be one less person walking around). I have met a lot of insufferable, grabbie, "I'm their fan and I made them famous so they have to make me happy" type of people - all of which I've let know exactly how stupid I think they are - but for the life of me I have never met anyone who has said "I'm gonna get Spock's autograph" and truly expect to see the name "Spock" on his paper. Anyone over the age of 8 anyway. My God what a scary group of people this must be, and how incredibly scary to be on the receiving end of this. I mean, there's these people who think they're the first one to say stupid things like "Hey, what are you doing in the sun?", etc. but these are generally just folks who think they're funny. My first name is Dorothea and you shoul hear how many stupid "Oz" jokes I get and they all think they're the first one to ask where my ruby slippers are... Paul Darrow tells a story of a kid about 8 years old who passed him on the street, came back to him and said, "DOn't worry, I won't tell anyone that you're really Avon but going under the name of Paul Darrow. They'll never find you." I mean it's funny when it's a kid, but damn scary if it's an adult. I dunno why I'm even rambling about this..maybe I'm hoping that if there is anyone like that on this list maybe they'll wake up and smell the coffee? C'mere lemme slap you upside your head.....How dare you jeopardize the fun/comraderie and interaction between normal fans and the actors who provide such pleasure to us by being so stupid? Actually, I find it hard to believe that any of these people are on our lists, could be, but out of 900 people I suppose you have to expect a looney tune here and there. No wonder everybody flinches here when someone inadvertently flips a character name with an actor's name - I still think it's a shame you have to worry about it, I keep trying to see that all of us are normal, well adjusted people - but, I guess better safe than sorry. What a shame....I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm nuts just coz I might slip and write "I'm gonna see Nick in Toronto" - as a matter of fact, I've said that to people I know here in town coz they may like the show, but they're not totally aware of the actor's name, so if I say "I'm going to see Geraint Wyn Davies in Toronto" they'll look at me and go "Who?" So, if I just say Nick they'll get excited. Look at this, I've gone all serious and stuff and made a huge message - sorry - but this just freaks me out so much! Okay, gang - enforce the list to write the correct name if you feel it will weed out the "reality impaired" ones and stress to the actors that we do indeed have no problem with our realities. Why I did it right for so long and then began making a dumb mistake only proves that I'm an idiot. Any way, if anyone wnats a 'clean' copy of part 33 of KC, please e-mail my off list. It's yours if you accept my apology. His page is at: http://terminal1.mtl.net/solidarite/mrhappy/fk.htm Webless people, worry not: I'll still mail this incomplete log to anyone who e-mails me *off-list* with the word CHAT in capital letters in the subject line. And *yes*, both of our logs are *incomplete*. There is at least one question that scrolled by the screen that is not included in the pieced-together logs. The question about "Trilogy of Terror 2". I know that other stuff at the beginning must be missing, too. So look for the official transcript when that becomes available. I'm not positive, but I suspect it will become available at the Pseudo Celebrity Chat Archives: http://pseudo.com/ponline/pontran/archive.htm Bye now, Allison percy91@w....... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 11:18:52 EDT From: Margie Gillis <MGILLIS@c.......> Subject: Re: Want to annoy an evil cable co? E-mail is definitely the way to go with this company. I've actually gotten responses from them about this. I've been sending them a polite little message every couple of months about this, and the response keeps getting better. It started with "sometime in 1997." The reply to an e-mail I sent a couple of weeks ago was "mid-1997," but was followed by a phone call (!) telling me I'd be connected by January 1997. I'm assuming that with gentle persistence I've gotten myself put at the top of the list, since it takes about 6 months for them to upgrade an entire town. Unfortunately, they're only upgrading one town at a time, so the time frame will depend on where you live. ObFK: I was watching Dying to Know You again (finally!--thanks Kathryn!) the other night and almost fell off my couch laughing when Nat said to Nick: "This is the 20th Century--we don't believe in demonic possession anymore." I must have more influence than I thought... ;) I called my local TCI office (greater Madison, WI area) two weeks ago, and asked when they were gonna get SciFi. Answer "we're adding some new channels in June, but we don't know which ones yet." Well, on the front page of the paper today, they announced that TCI is *adding* SciFi (among others!). So now I have to sign up for cable. I promised I would, if they'd add SciFi.... Guess they didn't want to mess with one of the NATPE 7, huh? <g> OBFK-- anybody want to discuss Amateur Night? There's a whole big parents-of-autistic-kids lunatic fringe out there too -- I bailed from one list because I was starting to get worshipful type fan mail (no shit) and threats that I 'owed' the parents all sorts of stuff that I couldn't give (like explanations about what their kid was thinking) -- who can't separate myth from seteriotype from reality with respect to autistic adults. One started stalking me. I figure it has to be *a lot* worse for famous actors than for someone like me, but even so I hesitate every time I accept a speaking engagement at a conference, or agree to meet a parent face to face or even post over on PA:. I was always pretty respectful of privacy but I'm a lot more so now. On ANI-L there have been debates about Raun Kaufman (who says he isn't autistic now and most people don't believe him) and Bill Gates (who has never said anything but people think he is). I find that sort of discussion very disturbing. Particularly Gates, since Kaufman is at least semi-public in his proclamations. > My God what a scary group of people this must be, and how incredibly scary > to be on the receiving end of this. I mean, there's these people who think > they're the first one to say stupid things like "Hey, what are you doing in > the sun?", etc. but these are generally just folks who think they're funny. > My first name is Dorothea and you shoul hear how many stupid "Oz" jokes I > get and they all think they're the first one to ask where my ruby slippers > are... I often disagree with what other people think is entertaining, but, yeah, there are folks who don't have everything all screwed on straight. And I'm very glad nobody really cares about logicians. But even the Geneva Centre blurb was disquieting. On the basis of that alone, the parental lunatic fringe may hunt me down in Toronto. And frankly, the political disagreements between me, Thomas, and Donna (as well as the differing views on what constitutes appropriate sexual behaviour) mean that there are already some *scheduled* tense moments in that conference. > Paul Darrow tells a story of a kid about 8 years old who passed him on the > street, came back to him and said, "DOn't worry, I won't tell anyone that > you're really Avon but going under the name of Paul Darrow. (One of the weirdest was a lady who wrote to me telling me I was a special guy and it was so great that I had made it all the way to college, and she hoped her son would be just like me some day and she was glad she and I were so close. I did not respond -- I didn't feel like telling her it was grad. school, not college, and those sex change operations can be hell.)
