Personally, I wouldn't mind a little underwater wrestling in a baptistry (or anywhere else, for that matter) with Nick. <evil grin> That brings to mind the fact that we haven't ever seen a bathing scene in FK, other than Nick washing his face and Sydney washing his paws. I remember somebody telling me that at the Toronto Trek where Ger was a guest, he brought up the question of why nobody on FK ever takes a bath, and wondered if Nick licked himself clean like a cat. I believe Nick MAY BE a fallen away Christian. I say he is agnostic because he is so quick to doubt his own beliefs--he has no proof that God exists (if he did, I believe he would be in church) but does not deny that God could exist. These flashbacks are what I would call "social conditioning". In the centuries Nick lived through it was hard to avoid being conditioned when Christianity was forced down your throat (Johnathan (?) Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is a perfect example). However, in the last century society has permitted people to choose their beliefs. I think Nick is now doubting, questioning, trying to decide if there is a God, and if so, what is he like? He is working on erasing those tapes playing in his head. I think that Nick will realize that there is a God, and that he is a loving and caring deity. I wrote one Fanfic piece, only to answer that question for Nick, since I doubt the writers will answer it for him. BTW, I don't think Nick's guilt is warranted IF he believes (as you assert that he does). I don't recall that anywhere in the Bible it tells us that it is good to feel guilty after we have repented. If you have that passage handy, I'd be interested in reading it. Sinners in >the Hands of an Angry God is a perfect example). Actually, when Nick was a mortal, Brabant was a Christian state like most of northwestern Europe. The only kind of Christianity permitted in such states in the 13th century was Roman Catholicism, since this is about two and a half centuries before the Reformation. So whatever Nick's mortal religious views, he has to have started out as a Catholic. Jonathan Edwards, who preached the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God four hundred years after Nick's mortal life, was not forcing religion down anyone's throat. He lived in colonial Massachusetts, a theocracy founded for Puritans by Puritans. Only the Church of England was grudgingly tolerated because it was a British colony and that was more or less limited to Boston. Puritanism was a movement within the Church of England which sought to purify all ritual, liturgy, and hierarchical government from the C of E, hence the name. It was heavily Calvinist, which taught at the time that some people were foreordained to damnation. This is not to say that there was no dissent in colonial Massachusetts -- at least two Quakers were hanged and of course Rhode Island was founded by a refugee from Massachusetts -- but it was the exception rather than the rule. Tanya also writes >However, in the last century society has permitted people to choose their >beliefs. <snip> Actually, Catholics and Lutherans agreed to live together in peace in 16th century in Germany. England granted freedom of religion to all the Protestant faiths and to Jews in 1660 as part of the Restoration of Charles II. Catholics were still officially not tolerated, but in practice they were simply the right to hold office, vote, serve in the army or navy, or attend universities. They were no longer in danger of their lives. Until the Edict of Nantes was revoked at the end of the 1th century, French Protestants were free to worship. So Nick has had centuries to learn to think for himself religiously if he wants to and more importantly, to learn toleration. I have always thought that Nick does mean to portray Nick as having some faith, but being doubt-plagued. If he didn't believe in anything, I don't see how he could fear damnation, as distinct from death. He asks Joan of Arc how she can be so sure that her god will be waiting for her after death, but many Christians have wondered that over the years. Heck, my minister talked in last Sunday's sermon about his own doubts while in seminary. Honest doubt is not a sin. The possible sin would be in what he might do if he acted on that doubt -- like becoming a vampire and spending several centuries "preying on mortals for their blood." :) Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." Free software. When you enjoy and follow a TV series as much as this one, it makes sense to keep a simple list of episodes -- the ones you've seen or the ones you especially liked. Of course there are short, cut-and-dried outlines available, like the ones in TV guide. But it's your own ideas, your own perception and analysis that are important. Include plot, main characters and guest stars. Add your own comments about the episode. Once you have entered a few episodes on your list, it's really enjoyable to browse through your notes, add more comments, scan the index. But just a quick reminder why our country was founded in the first place...protestants were being persecuted in England for their faith. True religious freedom, without any social reprocussions, has only been recent. For example: prayer in schools, abortion, women's liberation, sexual freedom. All of these legislated issues are based on morality derived from religion. Of course, all denominations are derived from Catholicism. It was the founding faith. But what I was arguing is what makes one Catholic? Attending the Catholic church? That's like saying a Baptist is a person who attends the Baptist church. The issue is much deeper than that. It involves identification with theology, morality, etc established by a denomination. Nick may or may not have been "Catholic". He may or may not have been "religious". Well, not really. The first English American colony, Virginia, was founded for economic reasons in 1607. The Puritans didn't arrive in Massachusetts until 1620. If you mean that Protestants were being persecuted by Catholics, that stopped with the accession of Elizabeth I, in November of 1558, about 50 years earlier than the English colonization of what became the United States. The first colony, the "Lost Colony" which failed in the 1580's, was in the reign of Elizabeth I. The Puritans did leave England because of problems with the Church of England, which was and is the state church, but the Church of England is a Protestant church. It's the one from which the Episcopal Church (full name, Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America) derives. It's called Anglican in Canada. Remember Henry the VIII of the Nine Wives? :) He went Protestant and declared the church in England independent of Rome in the 1530's. His son Edward VI, who succeeded him, had been raised a radical Protestant. When Edward died without heirs, he was succeeded by his older Catholic half sister Mary I ("Bloody Mary"). She did persecute Protestants, but after her death England was never again Catholic and Catholics were subject to various kinds of persecution or civil disabilities until the 1830's. Tanya also says: >Nick may or may not have been "Catholic". He may or may not have been >"religious". He may or may not have been "spiritual". We'll have to agree to disagree. I honestly can't see how a person could be described as a Christian in 13th century Western Europe without also being a Catholic. And to refer to something I didn't quote, yes, I would say that going to a Baptist Church of one's own volition makes one a Baptist, or whatever denominational name is used to fill in the blanks. I didn't actually say flatly that Nick was religious as a mortal. I said I thought Ger was playing him that way. That's my opinion, and of course I never said I thought anyone else should share it. It's also my opinion that Nick, now, is spiritual. This is a point I didn't address, but now that it's brought up again, that's what I think I see. YMMV. Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." You are coming from a historical perspective, I am coming from a political/ philosophical perspective. Most likely we can never agree because according to governmental legislation, you are correct. However, political theorists argue that religious freedom is a recent occurence, much like slavery was outlawed in the 1800's, but one could argue it wasn't until the Watt's riots/Alabama march in the 1960's that Afro-Americans really became free. I would still suggest that Nick didn't feel comfortable expressing his doubts until recently, when society has made atheism and agnosticism a permittable expression of "religion". He has trouble believing that anyone could truly know him and still accept him. If he can't accept/forgive himself, how can he bare his soul to anyone else? I think he's wrong about Nat -- she seems pretty understanding that he has *changed*. But look at Tracy's reaction when Vachon tells her about what he did after he was brought across. When he tells her that he tried to kill the Inca and ran away from responsibility, she said she didn't like him anymore. Just imagine how Tracy would respond if Vachon told her more about his past as a vampire -- for example, about that snack he and the boys had at the expense of some barmaids in a flashback (from MBIAV?? I can never keep straight which flashbacks occur in which episodes). She seems easily disappointed. (b) Blackwing and transference of the Vampire into Marian I finally got around to re-watching "Blackwing" last night. I'm not horribly fond of this episode, mostly because the attraction between Nick and Marian didn't make sense to me. It made more sense when I thought of Nick being magically seduced, but still... I didn't really buy it. That aside, I was paying attention to whether Nick ever actually bit Marian in either the real world or the spirit plane. That might explain how Marian got some of Nick's vampire powers or urges (so that she was able to take revenge for her grandfather's death). But I didn't see any biting at all. As far as I could tell, any transference of the Vampire occurred was through kissing. <g> There was a very hot & heavy kiss in the Spirit Walk, right before Nick saw blood on his hands. Before I totally wear them out listening to them again & again, here are my... ***Top 15 Musical and Non-Musical Things About the FK Soundtrack*** Non-Musical Things: 15. Gorgeous photos of Catherine, Deborah, Nigel, Ger... 14. Taking the CD out of the case and seeing Nick pulling the Caddy's trunk closed behind him. 13. Fred's dedication of the album to his Mom & Dad. I can just imagine my own mother saying he must be "such a nice young man" to include that! :^) 12. Also, the "sincere thanks to the fans (both in cyberspace and out) for their unyielding enthusiasm." <g> A tenacious bunch, aren't we?!? 11. The background on Fred and the music -- there's lots of information in the liner notes. 10. The goofy grin on Ger's face on Nick's police ID. 9. The cool shot of Fred playing the guitar. Gotta get an autographed 8x10 of this at some point! Oh, and also the very cool shot of Fred, JP, and GWD leaning on the green Caddy in the sunlight! Musical Things: 8. All of Track 18. The tambourine. The mournful oboe-like sound. The delicate chimes. The "choir of many souls." It's so sad! <sniff!> 7. I'm including Nigel's voice as one of the musical things. <g> Best line: "What a wonderful thing Humanity is -- passionate, intelligent, inquisitive, generous, full of hope and joy, noble of spirit, and above all, delicious!" 6. A truly high-quality music-only mix of the theme music. Terrific! 5. The overwhelming sense of angst and sadness created by most of the tracks. Expecially "Nick's Piano Theme" (in track 7), but also the middle of the suite from Queen of Harps (track 5), the suite from BMV (track 11), the lullaby from Father Figure (track 12), and the suite from Undue Process (track 18). 4. Tom-toms and kettledrums. I *love* the kettledrums. (Especially in tracks 6 and 19.) And the exploding trash cans. Or were those just kettledrums gone wild? Anyway, they scared my cat right out of the room. 2. Track 16, "Time Stands Still" from Avenging Angel. Unique, haunting, and compelling. 1. Favorite musical thing: "The Hunger" (track 2). Actually all the Raven music (which also includes "Black Rose," "Touch the Night," and "Dark Side of the Glass") but especially "The Hunger," IMO. Many thanks to Fred and the others who worked so hard to put this soundtrack together! * Allison Percy, a perky Knightie percy91@w....... * * Shrewthering info: http://assets.wharton.upenn.edu/~percy91/shrew.html * * "To paraphrase the Hair Club for Men guy, 'I not only compose the music * * for the show, I'm also a fan...'" Could be. If I remember correctly, he said the play was in 1978. If his birth year is when I think it is, he'd have been about 21 years old at the time. I wonder if he was still at Upper Canada College then (which a listmember noted is a rather, uh, conservative institution). If so, I'll bet his appearance in that play went over like a lead balloon. But back to the stunt chest. I happened to rewatch Dying to Know You last night (I have an Nth-generation Canadian version). Near the end, Nick is lying on the floor of his loft, wearing a robe, messing with a chess game. He shoves the game to one side and lies on his back, looking up at the skylight. The robe falls mostly open, and we get a pretty good look at his chest (which is still clearly attached to his recogniziable head and arms) <g>. At this point, Dotti swoons (right, Dotti?). Somewhat fuzzy tape aside, it sure looks to me like the same chest we see in NiQ. Others with better quality tapes may wish to review this scene and offer comparisons. Regarding the chest hair: I'll bet what hair is there is very blond and only shows up when lit from an angle (spoken by a woman with a blond husband). Oh, well, out of the gutter and onward... >As far as Nick's character dressing modestly to discourage interest >in him sexually, gosh, it sure hasn't worked. ;) I always figured he wore all the clothes to protect him from exposure to the light. He does end up at the edges of sunrise and twilight quite often, after all. I like what GWD said: "Nick Knight is the most clothed person on television." Back to work, as it were... This is what led into all the hot and heavy kissing. An exchange of blood did occur and it is the blood that makes a vampire.
