Subject: Jon Cassar article with Forever Knight mentions
I'm following Amy R's lead by posting on today the anniversary of
"Last Knight"'s first (depending on your market) syndication airing.
(Oops, sorry to those of you who got this on the fic list. Apparently I
followed Amy's lead a little *too* well.)
iFMagazine has an interview with Jon Cassar, who currently serves as
producer and director on 24, but who also worked as a camera operator
and director on FK. He talks about his time as a camera operator on
the show and speaks briefly of his friendship with Ger. He spoke to
him before the interview. Apparently Nigel was almost set to appear
on 24 a few years ago but he didn't have his U.S. work Visa. Jon would
love to see Nigel appear in the future but his time with the show ends
with this season.
The article can be found here:
http://www.ifmagazine.com/feature.asp?article=3309
Also, I've scanned the "Last Knight" behind the scenes image of Ger,
Nigel, and Cath pausing during the filming of the episode's final scene.
I got the second soundtrack CD a few months ago and it was in the booklet.
It's probably old news for a lot of people but those who have never seen
the image, you can see it at my livejournal.

What a coincidence! I was tidying up my home office credenza
yesterday, and came across my mini-shredder autographed by Jon Cassar
(with the note: "For all those bad scripts!"
At LCA in 2001, the National Enquirer had donated a number of
mini-shredders--tiny desktop shredders, 7" x 6"
x 5", battery-powered and actually capable of shredding one bit of
paper at a time. They are extremely silly---but became so popular
that, when something wasn't selling, Jon would say, "And it comes with
a mini-shredder!" and the bidding would go absolutely nuts. I don't
remember what I bid on, but whatever it was, it came with the coveted
mini-shredder.
So now it graces my home office desk, with Jon's autograph and note on
it. Ah, those were the days...LCA was indeed a special event, and I am
so grateful that I attended almost all of them.

I am wondering why Jon is leaving 24. Anybody know.
I still have my shredder.

Subject: Episode Discussion: A More Permanent Hell
1) Amusing Quote: "You're not going to be young forever, Knight" - Schanke
trying to get Nick to invest with his cousin
2) Asteroid 6748 (is this # the birthday of someone from the show or one of
their families? It looks like a birth date.)
3) When one of the scientists is being interviewed on television he says
"destroy life on this planet as we know it". This is a nice phrasing. The
writers didn't go for "destroy all life on the planet"....rather they gave the
more correct scientific description "destroy it as we know it".
4) It is interesting that Schanke is the one reaching back to religion that
destroying the planet can't be God's grand plan.
5) I like that Schanke apologizes to Natalie for upsetting her. It gives the
character's somewhat rough edges a little balance. He really didn't mean to
upset her and you can hear that in his voice.
5) LaCroix delivering the death-sentence for the planet is chilling
6) I hadn't thought about it before, but LaCroix at Pompeii went through about
the closest thing analogue to a big meteor impact that you could create. He's
already been through the "end of the world as you know it" and emerged out the
other side far more powerful.
7) God gravy...Divia. I had forgotten that she appears in this episode. Not
around long, but the actress does manage to create an impression doesn't she.
8) Nick brushing off 3 women to get to Janette at the Raven. I think that is
a FK record.
9) Schanke: "What? You run out of stiffs?"
Natalie: "No. They're stacked like firewood"
The normal gallows humor that Natalie has toward her job has moved a little
closer to noose.
10) I know that the conflict is necessary for the show to have an episode, but
Natalie's argument is too persuasive for Nick not to give her an out if he
really cares about her. It is OK not to turn her immediately, but he should
have promised to turn her if the confirmations in a few weeks show that the
asteroid is really impacting.. Of course, the fact that he doesn't do this
and thus effectively gives Natalie the ultimate brush-off - "I'd rather you
were dead then spend a night with you!" - leads to some very intriguing plot
twists.
11) I always liked how LaCroix could show such refined manners at times
(apologizing to Nick for criticizing his hospitality at only having cow-blood
at hand). I read a history of Pablo Escobar (the Colombia drug dealer) and
one of the funny things about Escobar was that he was exceeding polite much of
the time. He had such a frightening reputation for violence that he had learned
that if he wasn't careful in his speech, he would frighten people who he wanted
as allies so badly that they weren't effective. I think LaCroix has some of
that also. He is so powerful he pays attention to the little details because
he has found them important.
12) Dealing with Divia when hung over can lead to unforeseen consequence. Man,
there is a public service announcement in there somewhere. "Don't drink or you
could be consigned to a dark eternity of damnation by your own
incestuously-driven hell-spawned offspring"
13) For all I know, that picture has always hung in the Loft, but when LaCroix
and Nick are talking about the coming apocalypse under the Loft's staircase,
there is a disturbing picture of someone screaming very squarely framed between
the two men on the wall. It is a nice bit of symbology for what is happening
and what the two characters are discussing.
14) Was CQRY the call signs of the TV affiliate in Toronto in the FK universe?
15) It is interesting the concern that Janette shows for Natalie at the Raven.
Beneath that shell of distain for mortals, Janette does have her concerns for
specific mortals. Of course, we've also seen that women in trouble seem to
bring out Janette's sympathies.
16) What makes more sense? That Natalie was faking be whammed in the hopes
that she'd find a way to deal with Spark along the way home...or that she was
in fact whammed...but it wore off gradually and she faked it the last way as
she tried to figure out how to get out of the situation she was in?
17) I like the interplay between Natalie and Nick where she is upset that he
didn't spend the day and left her.
18) "You were right Divia, damn you for it" In the end, does LaCroix
sometimes feel the same anger toward being a vampire that Nick does? He
didn't ask to be turned. He was badly hung-over and awoke to a volcano about
to level the city. He told Divia he wanted to live...not knowing that she
intended eternal unlife. Nick at least understood (he thought) what he was
asking for. LaCroix was plainly attacked and brought across because of Divia's
conflicted desires for his approval and acknowledgement.
This has always been one of my favorite episodes.
Lots of interesting things going on with the various characters.
I find Nick's subdued reaction to the world ending interesting also.
He just keeps plugging along at the case at hand. I don't know if he
truly doesn't believe this is happening or if it is just his way of
keeping his mind stable by focusing on the mundane while chaos erupts
around him.

I always thought that she was faking it, given her history of not being able to
be whammied by Nick, but at the same time I found it hard to tell from the way
it was portrayed in this episode.

I had forgotten that Nick couldn't whammy her.
Mmm...I have had a thought. Natalie was drinking at the Raven and seems
to have had enough to get tipsy. Maybe that made her more susceptible to
a vampire's hypnotism? (I think I've read this is the case with regular
hypnotism, but that is a vague memory). She was in fact whammed by
Spark...but in the walk to her place from the Raven, she started sobering
up. Natalie is mentally quick and realized what was happening fast enough
to keep up the charade of being whammed until she could find someway to try
to disable Spark and get away from him.
