'K, not really in the woods, but I had to put that.
(What's the email shorthand for musical notes?) as I
was saying... I called up the supervisor of my new
job--yay!--to ask him a question; he said he didn't
know. He would ask Nick and Natalie. It took me a
half a second to remember why that combination of
phonemes sounded familiar! Wow! I didn't know they
worked there! Though why either of them, in their
specialties, would work for a home care agency beats
me....

I've been catching up on some digests this evening, and have just learned
of Judy Freudenthal's death. Mary, are you still collecting posts for her
mother? I don't know what to say, but I want to let her know a little of
how far afield Judy reached, for whatever that's worth.

Judy and I exchanged only occasional emails, always regarding each other's
FK fanfiction. But I find five of her kind, concise comments on my writing
saved in my reference file. And I have one of her stories, 2001's "Family
Secrets," still waiting in my ever-more-backlogged fkfic-l box for me to
read; if only I'd read it sooner, and written her about it . . . . I
always thought of her stories, personally, as writing that I perceived as
still growing and developing; I'm so very sorry I won't get to see it grow
and develop further.

Sincerely,
Amy R.

In a recent digest, someone asked about the "Knightbeat" fanzines.

They're 4.25x5.5", stapled, about 72-124 pages each, by Fenris House,
usually edited by Barbara Fister-Liltz. The cover illustrations are all
excellent, and all seem closely based on familiar publicity
head-shots. They're almost all short stories, though they do include a few
poems. The later issues use a larger Times-Roman font, and tend to be a
little shorter; the earlier ones use smaller fonts, sometimes Courier, and
tend to be a little longer. In recent years, a very few stories originally
published in "Knightbeat" have appeared on fkfic-l; most of the authors,
though, I've never seen on-line.

I happen to have issues 2-6, which run 1993-1995. It's probably too late
for the original inquiry, but if anyone needs to know the specific
contents, please let me know, and I'll be happy to list them. (Just facts,
no opinions; I still haven't read every piece, and for others, it's been
years.)

Sometimes, I think distantly about trying to trade some of my zines for
other zines. I would only want FK, though, and I've never gotten up the
initiative to discover what's out there that I might enjoy more than what I
have. A long time ago, there used to be a webpage with a list of all known
FK zines, but it fell out of maintenance. Did anyone ever take that
project back up?

Amy

I'm hoping someone can give me more info on fanzines. How were they shared,
were they given away or sold? Selling for profit is illegal since fan
fiction writers don't own the rites of the show or characters.

Are there any fanzines for FK being produced now? I've had several readers
email me wanting signed copies of my Season of Change FK story. Has this
ever been done for fan fiction fans? The fanzines are new to me, so any
info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Printed fanzines are traditionally sold for just enough that the publishers
can recoupe the costs of printing. I recall back in the 80s and 90s, when I
would occasionally buy one, they would range from $5 for a Xeroxed, stapled
zine, to $25 for a bound, printer production quality zine.

Thanks, Libs. This clarifies what I thought. I didn't realize that there was
a demand for certain stories in a book or booklet format, but it doesn't
surprise me. Forever Knight fans can't seem to get enough, and that
includes me.

I was shocked when several fans requested my last year's Yuletide Award
entry, Season of Change, in a book form. A few want signed copies. Did the
authors sign the older fanzines? I'm looking at options for a paperback
version of this story, that would sell for the publishing cost--no profit.

Do you or anyone else know of any writers who are producing FK fanzines
today? I figure with the easy internet access that fanzines aren't as
popular. I find this entire concept interesting, so any info would be
appreciated.

Fanzines, as I understand, started back in the 1930s when science fiction
fans would produce "fan magazines" of stories, articles, etc. With the
popularity of televisions, fanzines started to be published based on television
series... most famously Star Trek. When I was in college, I wrote fanzine Trek
stories so that I'd then get a free copy of the fanzine the story was in. I had
no money and this allowed me to receive mail while away at school.

If the author was self publishing, he or she might have signed them before
mailing them out, especially if requested. Many fanzines took submissions of
stories from around the world, so having each author autograph each copy of the
zine would have been (is) impossible.

I don't think paper zines are nearly as popular now becuase the cost of
printing is so outrageous. Ironically, it is actually easier to shelf publish,
but the fact is, the Net is much cheaper.

As for FK fanzines, to get back to an FK topic, I think there were quite a
few early on. I remember being asked several times right after the series
cancellation if I'd submit a story for such-and-such a zine. There's also been
a number of FK zines and even cookbooks with a fan fic slant produced with the
proceeds going for charity. These are usually very limited edition.

It is important when producing a zine to clearly mark it as fan fiction and
not to even slightly imply it is a "novel" or anything like that. That does
raise TPTB's eyebrows, no matter what television show universe.

As for asking for hard copies of stories, it is rather rare, but I've had
people ask me about doing it. My first virtual 4th FK season story earned
several requests, and I did finally print out some, staple them together, and
autograph them for local friends. But it sure wasnt' anything fancy.

Of course this was the U.S. rather than Canada, but I've been on three juries,
two of which were for cases that required police testimony. The first one was
a woman who insisted that she wasn't driving drunk, despite the breathalyer
reading. The officer who'd stopped her was a sheriff's deputy and he did testify
in uniform.

My second case was two separate double homicides committed by the same
defendants. The police detectives who testified wore business suits.

Libs, Thank you for all of the info on zines. I didn't know what fan fiction
was until I posted the first scene of Nick and Nat in the loft, that later
became the first chapter of Emotional Concert. I had another writer tell me
that I was writing fan fiction. I laugh at how I was innocently, but happily
sucked into this creative world. I find it fascinating how the fanzines
started and how long they've been around.

I will definitely mark the booklet, that it's fan fiction, as I do all my FK
work. The source we're looking into will produce the story in a paperback
book form for around 12-15 US dollars. I plan on buying them, and
distributing them to fans who request them.

If you should ever decide to once again publish any fanzines of your work, I
would be interested.

Thanks again.

Subject: Confirmation from Nigel Bennett List: Nigel will be in Stratford Oct.

Hi everyone,

In case this hasn't yet been posted here, I just saw an official
confirmation on the Nigel Bennett list that those of you who purchased
tickets for Goodnight Disgrace on Oct. 22-24 won't need to worry that Nigel
won't be there, because indeed he will.

Thanks to those of you who last month pointed out the GD/LCA scheduling
conflict, and thanks also to Jayne for resolving the question. I'm sure
that anyone who bought tickets for GD during the affected days, as well as
people who purchased or will purchase tickets for LCA, will now be feeling a
lot better knowing all this for sure.

I have sometimes noticed that NB list postings aren't necessarily always
posted here, but since this is really is important (as well as a follow-up
to my question and the question of others last month) hence my passing it
along. Hopefully this wasn't a double-forward, in which case I'll "doh!"
myself in advance.

Since I never got the chance to follow up my original announcement about
Nigel in regards to LCA, I am now posting the definitive confirmed
information
directly from Nigel.

As just posted on his official web site, he has play dates that will
coincide with the auction weekend, however, the charity is extremely
important to him
and he has made special arrangements to be in Los Angeles Sunday evening and
Monday to spend time with the fans.

This means a short 'meet and greet' Sunday night, and a special breakfast
with Nigel Monday morning, so all those attending LCA, please be sure to make
your travel plans accordingly. You don't want to miss spending time with him,
especially when he's taking his days off between performances just to be with
his fans. :-)

Final schedule details for the auction won't come until closer to the
auction, but at least you will be able to make travel plans.

He and I hope to see you all in October so we can raise lots of money for
charity! :-)
