Does anyone know the circumstances under which John Kapelos left FK ? I
mean, did he leave before the USA acquisition ? Or was he "squeezed out" by
USA suits who wanted to monkey with the chemistry of the show ?

... and to help you all have fun this year, I'd like to share an interesting
website I've come across.

Those of you who've been online for a few years may recall that there used
to be a brilliant multi-subject Fanfic Directory run by K S Nicholas, with
links to just about every fandom you can think of. Though the site is still
up, she hasn't updated it for about four years now (due, I understand, to
health problems), so many of the links are useless. However, I found a
replacement site, at: www.fanficweb.net/directory/index.html - I know the
owner, Rayne, from my time on the Space: Above and Beyond circuit (where she
runs a really excellent fanfic directory on that show). She has 5
categories and 11 links just on FK, which should keep us all busy checking
them out for a while....

Happy Hunting!

The official answer at the time was that he was tired of playing the same role
after both the pilot and two years of the series. The truth, from things various
people have detected over the years, seems to be that the suits wanted him out,
at least as Nick's partner. One idea was going to be to promote Schanke to
captain. I heard J.K. say at a con that he didn't like that idea.

Originally, for season 3, Nat was going to disappear, Nick was to be free to
romance the neck of the week, and LaCroix was to be seen only doing his
monologues at the radio station.

Fortunately for what little was left of the show, Ger reportedly said that if
Nat/Catherine Disher went, he his portrayal of Nick went too. This didn't save
Deborah Duchene, whom U.S.A. deemed not sexy enough and not workable outside the
Raven context. (Yes, I know, this gives new meaning to the word "stupid." <g>)

Subject: Canadian Law ?

As we all know, FK is set in Canada and not the US; However, I keep seeing
things in FK police procedure which keep saying 'American.'

While I wonder about search warrants, I can easily believe that Canadian
cops may use them and have to appear in front of a magistrate before a
search.

The thing I have a harder time believing is the Miranda Warning. This stems
from the 1966 Supreme Court case Miranda vs. State of Arizona. The first
part of that ("You have the right remain silent") comes directly from the
Fifth Amendment of the American Constitution protecting citizens from
self-incrimination.

Any Canadian legal eagles out there who'd know better than I ?

Subject: Christmas Vampires

Along with a copy of the SuperBit version of "Bram Stoker's Dracula," I was
lucky enough to receive the first season of FK on DVD for Christmas and have
been slowly working my way through the episodes (1 to 3 eps per day).

Being used to the American versions, it was interesting to see the Canadian
edits. In some cases, there were scenes which really added depth to the
characters (particularly Schanke). In other cases, it was obvious the extra
material was filler for Canadian TV and the American edit was superior.
(Personally, I can do without the 'music video' interludes with the
cheeseball pop songs and Nick laying on the floor playing chess with
himself.)

However, the critics were right: The video quality of the DVDs isn't
comparable to contemporary releases. (Just put an episode on 'pause' and
the grain becomes obvious.)

That's not to say the discs aren't watchable -- They're at least as good as
Beta videotape. But, after seeing the wonderful restoration job done on the
23 year old Shogun mini-series (another Christmas present), it's clear they
could have done better on FK. I was hoping that a lack of extras meant that
the episodes were encoded in a higher bit rate.

Subject: FK Moment of Weirdness - Nick's Tarot Deck

This is the first time I've seen the Canadian edits of the show and was
surprised to find that I already own one of the props from the episode "Dead
Air."

During the interlude with Nick laying on the floor and pitching cards into
the air, I noticed he was using a Tarot deck I own. "The Witch's Tarot" is
a commercially available deck customized for practitioners of Wicca. (It
was interesting to note that the silver pentacle holy symbols on the card
backs didn't affect Nick at all.)

Anyway, if you want to add another FK prop to your collection, you can pick
up a copy of The Witch's Tarot at any new age store. It's published by
Llewellyn, so it should be easy to find or order. If you're just curious
about card images, click here: http://www.astroamerica.com/t-witch.html

(And, before anyone assumes anything: No, I'm not witch. If I'm anything,
its Taoist and Buddhist. I just happen to collect Tarot decks. I like the
art.)

You're quite correct. A lot of the terminology used in FK refers to US laws,
not to Canadian laws in order to cater to the American audience. In Canada,
we're so accustomed to hearing these. A lot of other things in FK are quite
different from US practice. For instance, in Toronto a homicide detective would
not normally be armed. Only uniformed police carry weapons. Even undercover
cops go unarmed, except in very special circumstances.

Police jurisdictions are called Divisions in Canada, not Precincts. And they
are always referred to as, for instance, Fifty-two Division, never fifty-second
Division or Division 52.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is much more supportive of
individual liberty than the US Bill of Rights in areas such as wire-tapping or
blood or breathalizer tests to mention only a few.

The Canadian equivalent of the Miranda warning is called the Therens reading.

There are variations in local jurisdictions, but generally, it goes like this:
"I am arresting you for.....(briefly describe the reasons). It is my duty to
inform you that you have the right to retain and instruct counsel without
delay. You have the right to telephone any lawyer you wish. You also have the
right to free advice from a legal aid lawyer. If you are charged with an
offence, you may apply to the Ontario Legal Aid Plan for assistance.
1-800-............ are toll free numbers that will put you in contact with a
Legal Aid Duty Counsel Lawyer for free legal advice right now. Do you
understand? Do you wish to call a lawyer now?"

There is also a French version.

This warning must be given before trying to get any physical evidence, such as
a breath or blood sample, or before any interrogation.

> Any Canadian legal eagles out there who'd know better than I ?

I am not a legal eagle, nor do I play one on TV. <g> The above info is from the
2000 Canadian Criminal Code, plus some supplementary data.

My favorite thing about the tossing-tarot-cards-in-the-air scene is the moment,
a bit into it, when a clearly bored Ger surreptitiously checks for the camera
location, then pointedly throws the cards *at* it...you can see them coming
closer and closer to hitting the camera with each throw.

Perhaps you missed the previous posts on list about the fact that the first
season of FK was shot on cheaper film stock. The quality of the original
material is the problem. We can expect better image quality from the rest
of the series.
