Subject: ADMIN: URGENT -- Never mention copying Sony DVDs here again

Copying Sony's professional DVDs of Forever Knight even at cost isn't a gray
area that they might tolerate. It's piracy, and they _will_ prosecute. The
copier risks being sued for a lot of money. Remember the recent uproar over the
internet copying music? Same thing legally and the same remedy is available to
Sony.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to insist that no one ever mentions copying
the Sony DVDs on here again. Anyone who does will be noposted.

I'm not going to have Forkni-l shut down by Penn. State, the psu in our address,
because Sony threatened to sue them for advertising an illegal produce. Worse
yet for me, I don't want to be a target of such a suit because as a listowner
I'm responsible for the content. I'm sure Don doesn't either.

I strongly suspect that Sony monitors the list and that this is why they found
out so quickly about Jean Graham's book.

So never, ever mention copying Sony DVDs on here again!

Heads up for those who can get CBC TV from Canada.

CBC will be showing "Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion"
this Sunday and Monday Oct 26 & 27th, at 8pm.

Nigel Bennett plays a Danish captain in this true story
of two ships colliding in Halifax harbor on 6 Dec 1917,
and the explosion that followed that killed over 2000,
injured 9000 more, and destroyed a section of Halifax.

The listing on IMDB is not very extensive, I'm sure we'll
be able to spot a few more FK alumni in this one. You
can get more info about the show at
http://www.cbc.ca/television/sunday.html

On a personal note, I'd love a copy of this to add to
my collection.... please contact me off list if you can help.
Thanks

Cheryl

It occurs to me that Sony either used that CBS version of Dark Knight
because they had to (they were using the Crimetime after Primetime
thing, and that version goes with that), or because they are thinking
that, if FK goes well, they will issue DK and Black Buddha as
stand-alones in the Canadian version.

I don't wanna slag Sony (although I am somewhat disappointed) because we
finally got them! And now several feet of shelf space of poor-quality,
ad-riddled tapes can look forward to retirement.

Besides, even in the CBS version of DK, I'm still seeing small snippets
of scenes that I don't recall seeing on Showcase OR Space. (But I might
be a bit forgetful too--haven't hauled out my tapes to compare yet.)

I, too, don't have any quality issues, and I'm fortunate enough to have
a pretty freakin' big TV to view these on--and it's a real tube TV, not
a projection TV.

That's what I wanted to hear. I haven't played my DVD's yet. Too busy.
But if there are new bits obviously it is not a syndicated version.
Programs shown in syndication cut bits and pieces to make room for the
extra commercials. Before I found this fact out I used to go nuts waiting
for a certain bit to show up in the syndicated version only to find it was
no longer there.

I find the discussion of the American version vs the Canadian version very
strange. Years ago it was the Canadian channels who clumsily cut out
whole sections of a show to accomodate more commercials. I remember one time
when they deleted an entire murder scene out of a show. Consequently
we didn't have a clue what the characters were talking about.

Instead of holding up a makeshift cross, Ger held up a box of Oatmeal
Crisp, the cereal that Nigel was doing commercials for at the time.
Here's the sequence:

Nigel approaches Ger, hissing and being menacing, only to be faced by
Ger holding up an Oatmeal Crisp box. Nigel breaks up, bats the box
with his hand, and staggers off, laughing.

Ger turns to the camera and quotes the tagline of all the commercials:
"But it's no' oatmeal!" in a fake Scots accent.

Nigel straightens up and says, "We'll do it again!" and gets back into
character.

A great moment, a great practical joke. It's one of my favorite
bloopers.

Those oatmeal commercials are hilarious, with Nigel playing, among
other characters, his own mother, all done in a broad Scots accent.
The descriptions of what oatmeal should be like are wonderful.

Dear McLisa,
Thank you for the warning. This may make me awfully unlikable, but I believe
that copying any copyrighted material without permission of the owner is
wrong, no matter how much it costs in the first place. Since laws, both national
and international, prohibit this, anyone who does it becomes a lawbreaker. As
you said, it isn't a gray area. Thank you again, and have a fangtastic

I doubt it, as you aren't suppose to copy VHS tapes - and you CERTAINLY
wouldn't be allowed to copy software to give to ANYONE, it is meant as a backup
for your PERSONAL use. No one else can legally use the software.

I believe that is now the subject of some very heated legal debate in
both Canada and the U.S., with some legal case(s) attempting to make
that argument. Heard some discussion of it on the CBC a week or so ago.

I watched Dark Knight parts 1 and 2 today and found the same thing to be true.
I too wasn't sure if that is what I was seeing but this confirms it for me. It
had been awhile since I had seen Lacroix bring in Nick's first *meal*. I also
think there was more scenes with the flying viewpoint left in than the later
versions. One of the things I am looking forward to after my foot surgery (of
course, relief from the pain being the first) is being able to watch the other
epsiodes and just enjoy it. I heard sounds that I don't remember being that
distinct before. Even nuances in the music in the background. The clarity of the
dvd was just amazing to me. I am just so happy that they were released.

Does anyone have a current address for Sony? Email as well as snail mail. I
would like to send them a thankyou for releasing FK on dvd. Thanks, from

It might fall under "fair use," but I'm no lawyer. And "fair use" most
definately doesn't cover distributing them, even for free or cost.

Besides, with much software these days (games, at least,) you *can't* make
a backup copy without some sort of "hack" or "crack" - which gets you into
a whole *other* can of worms with things like the DMCA (ugh,) since you
have to circumvent copy protection schemes to do so. Some music CDs have
the same thing going on, that (annoyingly) prevents their use in computers.
Not sure if DVDs do or not -

In any case, I don't think it'd be worth the frustration, or the loss of
the list, to worry about it.

I think one reason they gave us the Crimetime version is that the Canadian
version has NO subtitles for all the French. So anyone who didn't know French,
would miss the important plot information.

I got my DVD's today. They were waiting for me when I got home. :)

DK1 is clearer than my tapes are.

One reason they look better on tv than a computer is that tv has a 640x480
resolution, where many monitors are around 1024x768 or higher. That's quite a
difference there.

It's like when you take a 4x6 picture and blow it up to an 11x17 and it's
grainy. You wonder why, not realizing that the more you blow something up the
grainier it gets.

One other thing we have to remember is that getting
copies of the DVDs from someone makes the numbers sold
look smaller than they actually are. And if they look
too small, they may not decide to give us season 2 and
3 figuring there's not enough demand.

LOL! When you put it like that, it does seem funny, but it's not really
what I meant. I meant that they just didn't think about the fans or the
show at all. I don't expect them to care about the fans (a big corporation
actually caring about it's customers? Nope.) It would be nice if they
cared enough about their own product, though.

A number of years ago, a T.V. station here cut off the last bit of Northern
Exposure, so they could put on their weatherman, complete with fancy
graphics, telling us all about thunderstorms that were coming our
way. They could have simply done a message across the bottom of the screen
instead. It wasn't that they were trying to upset the fans; it just didn't
occur to them that someone might actually think the show was worthwhile,
that it might be meaningful to see the whole thing. That's the sort of
thing I mean. (Happily, so many people called the station to complain,
that they re-aired the entire episode a couple of nights later.)

><< However, legality and morality are two different things.>>
>
>Cutting a scene from a DVD has little to do with morality, IMHO.

Again, that's not what I meant. I meant the morality of fans making their
own copies and providing them to other fans. A lot of people consider it
to be stealing when someone makes a copy of a DVD for someone else or
downloads music instead of buying it, etc. In general, that's how I see
it, but not if the thing we want isn't being produced by TPTB.

> If the bashing of Sony by a few people cause them not to release seasons
> 2 and 3 due to complaints, I will be beyond disappointed in FK fandom

I also don't think people at Sony are sitting around saying, "Those people
aren't being nice to us. They're complaining. Let's not give them any
more DVD's."

They obviously are planning on releasing Seasons 2 and 3, since they called
it Part 1 of a trilogy. If they don't do it, it will be because sales were
low, not 'cause of a few complaints. If people don't buy it because
they're unhappy with an incomplete version, that's Sony's fault, not ours.

I'm concerned that when they release Seasons 2 and 3, they might just
release the Scifi versions, which have little pieces cut out. I'd like to
know how to get in touch with them to at least request that they release
the entire, uncut episodes.

As far as bad reviews on Amazon go, I haven't posted any, nor do I intend
to. The best way to counter any bad reviews that are already there is for
other people to post good reviews.

>Sony has been very generous to allow us to have fan fiction to begin with.

Sony is not "generous". A big corporation is not "generous". That's not
bashing; that's just a fact. Profit is the only thing that matters. If
they haven't cracked down, it's because they either don't know about it or
because it would cost them more to crack down than it would be worth to them.

Who's bashing people who worked hard to get the DVD's? I'm certainly not.

I extend my sympathies. I know how I can get when arthritis and other
stuff acts up.

Along the same lines, I may sound like I'm bashing Sony, but I've had some
very bad experiences with the corporate world lately (mostly medical
insurance companies, but there's plenty of other corporate problems out there).

>Just think, if this set sells out and is later reproduced, it gives Sony

Ahh, now, there's a good thought. Or, maybe we should start agitating for

What Kristin said, though, is that the version does have the missing

sound like someone just brought up the wrong tape.

It sounds more like they did have the original Canadian tape, but then cut
some scenes on their own.

Nancy - I have seen all of the commercials but didn't know that they used the
Scots accent. That's interesting for me because as a German one it isn't that
easy to distinguish between all the English accents. I can distinguish
between the British, Wales and Irish accent, the North and South American
accent and
I learned the different in the Australian language. I love the Canadian
accent. But I didn't hear the Scots accent in the oatmeal commercials. I will
watch
it again to get a better sense of it. Thanks!

Anybody else notice that Nigel Bennett was never
mentioned? LaCroix' name was only mentioned once, in
an off-the-cuff comment by GWD. For some reason it
looks
like they are trying to down-play one of the most
central relationships/conflicts in the show.

But in the last segment when asked about the future of FK they mentioned
they would have to have at least Nick, Nat and Lacroix. That trio would
be essential to any follow up. I don't think that was downplaying it.
I just don't think they allowed enough time to get into the characters
of the show. The only reason they brought Nick Knight up was that it
was about him. They talked more in general about how the show was a
story about redemption. It really didn't go into relationships at all
until the question was brought up whether Nick prefered Janette or Nat.
Ger hedged and didn't really say. Parriott jumped right in and said
Nat. Before then there was no real mention of the others in the show.

How very disappointing. Is there a transcript of it anywhere?

It is still available on the Sony Television website. I listened to it this
morning.

I just wanted to mention that I have put links on the page now on the
fkvoyage site.( http://www.fkvoyage.com ) That site was originally
just a repository just for files so I never really made a page with
links on it. Now I have made a real, ( but simple ) page with links so
you don't have to remember what directory the ftp stories, etc are in.

Also, anyone have any ideas for a web site. Maybe something that hasn't
been done before? Is there a site anywhere that concentrates on Nick's
early life? I don't think that there would be enough info to make a
site on his life before he became a vampire so I thought I would expand
it, but just can't figure out what I want to do.
I went and bought www.debrabant.org and have created an opening page,
but haven't done anything else. It is best seen at 1024x768 resolution.

( I also bought www.foreverknight.org but haven't done anything with that.)

I did and that was not very nice considering he was half the show. I listened
to it and saved it in a file. It was definitely not what I thought it would
be.

Coming out of lurkdom to add to the DVD discussion. I had a little scare
when I stuck the first disc into the player and it wouldn't play. I tried all
the others and they worked just fine. I went back to the first and turned it
over. I saw that it was covered with dust. I cleaned it off and tried again.
This time it worked! So if anyone else has problems playing, you might want to
check to make sure the discs are clean.

As for the quality, I will agree with Kristen, that they could have been
cleaner. Yes, they're much better than my old tapes, still, I do expect higher
quality from DVDs. I don't think it has anything to do with them cramming four
or five episodes onto a disc. I have 3 seasons of Stargate and several
Farscape sets. Each have 5 episodes or 4 episodes plus extras to a disc. The
quality
is great.

I don't know if pointing out to Sony, that the quality isn't that great would
hinder or help towards getting the other seasons out. Seems like they would
want all of their products to be the best it could. Considering I paid less
than $25 for FK, I don't feel comfortable complaining about it. But if I had
paid the full price, I would expect the same high quality as I've gotten with
other DVDs I've purchased.

Well, that's my two-cents. Going back to lurkdom.
