May I have the permission to put that quote on a t-shirt?

Well, your loss is our gain! Now I've got lots more FK sites to check
out in my Ample Free Time (tm)! So my thanks to you and McLisa for these
two postings.

This is one of those times that I'm really happy we have that
answer-response system for subbing to the FORKNI-L and FKFIC-L mailing
lists; it will save Don and McLisa a lot of heartache.

One of the (non-FK-related) Yahoo! groups I moderate was attacked by
pornbots this morning. Their MO: subscribe to the list, post-and-announce
offending files to the Files section of the Yahoo! list. This gets around
the moderated-new-member setup that a number of groups have.

I know that a number of the FK groups our FORKNI-L members own and moderate
are Yahoo! groups. If you are an owner or moderator of such a group, please
be aware that this is happening, and take whatever steps may be required to
secure your group. (Setting the group to allow upload only by moderators,
but not editing individual memberships of existing members, may do the
trick. Then when known new members join, you should be able to turn on file
posting individually.)

How many novels were there? I remember being told
three, but there's a fourth one showing up on Ebay
called 'On Holy Ground' and going for a really high
price but I don't recall hearing about a fourth one.
How many are there all together?

Mel, who's still searching for just the perfect sig line

There's three. "On Holy Ground" is actually a fanzine/unauthorized novel.

"On Holy Ground" is a novel written by Jean Graham. It was originally slated to
be an official FK novel (or at least Berkeley was considering it) but when the
series fell through Jean went ahead and published it anyway, proceeds going to
charity. It's a very nice book, looks almost as good as a trade paperback.

It was stomped on by Sony, though, so there are a limited number in existence
and there is no possibility of any more being printed. That's why the price is
so high on ebay.

It's quite good, too. I was lucky to have beta'd it for Jean and so got an
advance read-through. There's lots of good flashback stuff (always my favorite
part)!

Can anyone believe those prices? $75 US for an opening bid, and copies
of _On Holy Ground_ allegedly sold in the past for $119, $100, and
"well over $200". I often buy antiquarian books for my hobby, and rarely
spend over $100 Canadian.

Is fan-type stuff in a whole different league, or what? I mean, for me
to pay over $100 it had better be a) for charity; or b) autographed by
some pretty important people!

Can any e-Bay addicts out there help explain this to me?

I saw a copy auctioned off for almost $300 a few months ago.

It's supply and demand, plus the excitement an auction can generatel. Some
prices get truly ridiculous. I've seen it in action at LCA---you would not
believe the prices props and suchlike can bring. (At least that's for charity).

There are not very many copies of OHG out there, hence they're asking high
opening bids. It's the nature of the beast, is all.

I know what you mean! Who in the world would pay $250 for a DEAD RAT! A half
eaten one at that. I mean, it is missing a leg and everyth...

oh, wait, that was me...<wRPg>

Anyway, I can tell you exactly why prices can go so high - someone wants it bad
enough to pay it. I sometimes really raise an eyebrow at the prices, but I don't
blame someone for paying it if they want it bad enough. I buy most of my cloths
at thrift stores or on clearance as I just can't imagine paying $50 for a pair
of jeans. Yet, some people happily do so and consider it a bargain. Same thing
with auction items - one person's item taking up space on the bookshelf is
another person's pride and joy.

Like the Ratsie Wot Kilt Screed (although I do know one person who'd probably
treasure it as much as me and he's NOT getting it! ha!)
