Subject: If Nick only knew

Greetings everyone,
Someone pointed out that the 10th anniversary of the line is coming
up, I just realized I have been in here from the line's early
      beginnings. Lucky me.
Well, on to why Nick should have known--it would save him a lot of
guilt. Nick always felt that he and all vampires are "unnatural"
that natural would not approve of him. Let me introduce the Dracula
Orchid. Yes, the Dracula Orchid. The flower of the Dracula Orchid
looks like a flying bat. In nature the orchid has been found to
contain little bones. The bones of critters the plant ate. So hey
Nick--you have a friend in the plant world.
      Enjoy,
      Barbara

Is there any of form for these kinds of letters floating around on the internet?
I'd like to start doing these kind of mailings and though I wouldn't actually
use the form (I would respond better to an original letter so I would assume
that so would some executive) I would like to have some kind of idea as to what
information I should include.

The lovely Laurie of the Isles has duly smacked the paw of yon feline
listfounder. (This is what I get for being too into the Brit/Canuck mode
of thought.)

In yesterday's digest, I mentioned our postmaster having a fondness for
Smarties. Naturally, I meant, as Laurie called it, the 'better version of
M&Ms', available in the UK and Canada, not the little sugar things one
gets in rolls in America.

Hope that clarifies. Happy Halloween, btw. :)

Hi-
I was watching Human Factor again the other day and
since I am a fan of David Keeley (who played Robert) I
was thinking more about the character.
Did anyone ever write any fic that went into more
depth of Janette and Robert's relationship? If so,
where can I find it?
Thanks so much!

Another current model popular in the US (among federal
agents) is the Browning 10mm. It does add a certain
amount of punch, and is about the same size as a 9mm,
just a bit heavier. (Practically, on another series,
Mulder and Scully would have been using this, and
think the show switched eventually from the Sig-Sauer
9mms they used originally. I honestly like the latter
better, just because it's got a nicer look, but that's
just personal preference.) When I went to police camp
in Michigan, they trained us on Smith and Wesson 9mms,
OR on Glock 9mms. (I liked the S&W, a bit more
"old-fashioned", closer to the P-38 I learned on.)
Either one was considered a possible police-issue,
depending on what city/town you worked in. Most of
the officers training us used the S&Ws when they
worked, but they were trained on both. (The Glock's a
bit blockier and I personally thought it felt a little
too light in hand.)

I would agree. And also, in the case of Stonetree and
Reese, while they'd be expected to keep up their
skills, they wouldn't expect to be in many situations
where they'd require a sidearm.

I believe, though, that most departments, at least in
the US, are trying to phase out the revolvers. I
don't think any beat cops carry them any more. Our
retired instructors both had chosen semi-autos for
their personal protection weapons (though I don't
think that would be allowed in Canada.)

Again, I agree, largely based on the classes they gave
us, and the "war stories" we got to hear. Beat cops,
or special units like the SWAT team are far more
likely to end up in a situation where they'll actually
have to use lethal force (and they are not supposed to
draw unless they really think they are going to need
it, in a situation where they will shoot to kill.
"Shooting to wound" is something made up for TV.) The
primary exercise at camp was homicide investigation,
and it's mostly CSI and paperwork. (And it's amazing
how one stupid paperwork screw-up can sink an
open-and-shut case.) Police work is a LOT more
fast-paced on TV than it is in reality.

The Knights Templar, Teutonic Order, and Knights Hospitaler are knightly
religious orders. You didn't have to belong to any of these orders to go on
crusade.

I think Nick was your ordinary, garden-variety Norman knight, unaffiliated with
any religious order.

Congratulations to Jon Cassar for giving us the best

of "24" (8:00am-9:00am) was fantastic. This is by-far
the best series on the air. I'm glad to see Jon
Cassar as producer and director of this wonderful
show.

The suspense is killing me and I can't wait until next
week. By the way, if anyone missed it, it will be
repeated on FX. It will air on Monday night at
11:00pm (E/P) and again on Tuesday at 5:00pm (E/P).
Be sure to catch it; it shouldn't be missed.

Not even necessarily 'teenaged'. I have a few very adult friends who still have
to fight tooth and nail to keep an overbearing parent from running/ruining their
lives. But being mortal, they have the courts and societal norms on their side,
and the option of being able to permenently dissappear if they have to. Nick
has neither.

I just rewatched DK and really looked at when Nick
staked LC in the loft. Yes, it did look like the
stake was a bit low and we saw the flames and his
struggling. But it didn't really look like HE was on
fire. The flames (at least to me) seemed to be closer
to the camera, so I interpreted them as the flames
from the room itself. And... we don't see LC actually
burnt. In one scene we see him struggling, then it
cuts to Nick and Alyse and the next he is gone.
Perhaps he flew off to lick his wounds and recover.

The three orders Melinda names--the Hospitalers, the Templars and the
Teutonic Knights--were definitely crusading orders, but you didn't have to
join a religious order to be a crusader. Basically, a knight (or anyone
else, for that matter) became a crusader by going on crusade.

A knight might embark with a huge army alongside Counts and Barons and
Kings, or as part of a smaller group from a particular location, or he might
go on his own, depending on resources and the timing of his departure.
Modern historians have assigned numbers to the crusades, but the
distinctions are made in retrospect, and in Nick's time no one said "Okay,
today we're starting the Sixth Crusade."

I am coming out of lurkdom to add my two cents... I also agree with the
above statement. I was just at the Chiller Con in New Jersey this past
weekend and bought some Forever Knight pictures at a vendor, and then showed
them around to the friends that I was with ("Zorro" fans - go figure!).
Turned out there were some who were fans of the show, and I dutifully pulled
out the business-sized cards that I carry that have the show's logo and the
major websites listed on them.

And for the fan fic authors out there - I read when I can (though I like to
wait until the entire story is posted before I read it) and then I send a
note about it to the author. The fiction is still as fresh and fun as when
this all started.

And don't forget all the support we still give the actors - Ger's Gerthering
last November and his plays this summer, Greg Kramer's website <waves at
Libratsie> and LCA in October (BTW - for anyone who went to LCA - report

I, for one, even though I lurk here, am still a staunch and supportive

'Thankless Child' and its sequel 'Survivors' have Robert and Patrick

Though Robert is not a character in it, Janette reflects on her

Nope. There is a legal way for Canadians to be allowed to carry guns for
personal protection, but it is very heavily restricted; I think the
number allowed to do so hovers around 50 people in the entire country.
One example was a Calgary alderman, IIRC, who had been threatened by a
local motorcycle gang because he was responsible for the city
council-ordered demolition of their illegal "clubhouse" in his ward.
They were arrested as they completed plans to blow up his house.

About 8 years ago, when I took my firearms safety training, I was told
the Calgary police used 9 mm Glocks with the double New York trigger
pull, which means about 14 lbs of pressure are needed to pull the
trigger, in order to prevent accidental firing. I don't know about other
Canadian police forces.

If you need to research Canadian firearms law for a story, go to the
government's Canadian Firearms Centre website:
