all this talk of ruggedness brought to mind a picture:
that of ditzy blonde fleeing in tears from the embrace

It couldn't have been because Villiers, a favorite of James I (VI of
Scotland) was a contemporary of Shakespeare and not represented in
his plays, just as the king wasn't.

(Striking forehead with right fist) Well, duh!

Could Nick's costume have originally been used in some later, non-Shakespearian
play involving Villiers?  I don't suppose we'll ever know.
