Hi all,

Delurking briefly to provide my $0.02 regarding GerNick.

I always thought that Nick's blonde, blue-eyed look was to show the
deceptiveness of the vampire and was definitely a crucial element in Nick's
appeal. Here is someone who is beauty and light outwardly but tormented and
dark within. Fit in with the whole "fallen angel trying to return to grace"
theme.

The Caddy colour, well...that's still open to debate.

Going back to lurk mode.

Goonnessgracious! I neglect my email for a few days
and what happens? stampede! one thing i wanted to
say: in Macie's defence, I can see where she's coming
from. for my part however, I feel as if my fellow
listies are friends, and so i don't mind being asked
to help in situations such as the one in question. i
like to be able to help if i can. having just said
that, regarding the bit about Screed, all I can say
is: WHAT WERE ANY OF YOU THINKING?? naughty!
naughty! i'd slap you all up good if i had the
chance! <jk>

And I have some exciting news!! A couple of weeks
back, I put in application papers to serve a mission
for the LDS church, and I heard back today! I will be
serving in Canada--in the Manitoba vicinity. yaay!!
not near toronto, but oh well. I hope to eat some
Vachon snack cakes. *snicker* that always makes me
smile.

my cat is sitting on my lap. :)

It also made him immediately intriguing, because up to that point I don't
believe there were many, if any at all, blond vampires in film. Central Casting
said they were dark and sinister, not fair and boyish. I remember my initial
reaction was, "A blond vampire? Get outtahere!"

> Here is someone who is beauty and light outwardly but

Absolutely. And of course, for Nick, it makes hiding in plain sight all that
much easier. Sure, he never goes out in the day, and you never see him eat, but
c'mon, a blond vampire? Nah....

> The Caddy colour, well...that's still open to debate.

I can just see the props person..."Hey, I need a Cadillac. A black Caddy, real
old. What's available?"

"They're all in use except this one--" Assistant shows picture of The Caddy.

"You've got to be kidding!"

"It's the only one out there for the next two weeks. It runs okay."

"But we need it in two DAYS!"

"This is it, then."

(sigh) "Well, I suppose if we can have a blond vampire we can have a teal
Caddy."

You Know You've Been Watching Too Much FK When... you read the following
little tidbit in the Bonehead of the Day mailing list:

Bonehead award three goes to all those people who made it
necessary for the folks who make the Berol Red Eye Reduction Pen,
used for retouching photo prints to diminish red eyes from the
camera's flash, to put the following warning on their package,
"Only suitable for use on prints, never directly on the living
eye."

New Scientist

...and the first thought that comes to mind is,
A) who would be stupid enough to try "getting the Red Out" on a vampire, and
B) how did s/he survive to complain about it? <g>

I remember having a discussion with my mom once about FK.
My dad's already a fan and I was trying to see if I could
get my mom interested too. What she said was that it was
hard for her to picture a blonde vampire. She said that it
somehow didn't fit with her mental image of the
bloodsuckers. I thought about her remark a lot, and
realized, the exact thing that distressed her about the
main character in the show was the same thing that
attracted me to him (and to the whole show). It was
breaking out of tradition and enhancing the image of
vampires as a part of society, albeit hidden. To think that
they lived and worked among us and looked just like us was
really an interesting aspect. It was way cooler than
Dracula with his cape and slick hair and all the goofy
poses, subtler, and even more chilling.

As for the cast of the pilot (Rick Springfield and co.) I
must admit, I personally didn't like them that much.
Especially LaCroix who seemed like a character out of
Highlander and Janette, who looked like a WWF chick. As for
Rick himself, I can’t really say. Nick for me is and will
always bee ‘the golden vampire’.

Libs will be very pleased, I know: I happend to mention
FK in a thread on list in another fandom, and someone
responded that they had seen a few eps and liked it, and
in their sig wrote:

much I liked the little rat-eating guy who lived with Vachon....)"

Screed made a conquest even among non-FKers!

Think in terms of an 8' tall sentient tiger that considers humans
to be a "meat animal".
Kziniti are absolutely ferocious warriors who have a tendency to
react emotionally to insults. Thus: "You Scream, You Leap" is the
advice one Kzinit gives a human friend on how to challenge another
Kzinti to a death-duel.
They are common characters in some of Larry Niven's Known
Space books. Not really related to vampires, just was what went
through my head at the time.
If anyone wants to know more, please contact me off-list, I'd be
pleased to suggest titles of books to anyone interested.

You are completely correct, and the reason this list is so great is because we
have clear and sensible rules, and McL and the List Gardener aren't afraid to
make sure we stick to 'em. They both are also refreshingly level-headed, and
the both have a tolerant and genial sense of humor. I never can say enough
about how much respect I have for those two, and since I'm not the only one who
feels that way, this list works. I expanded from FK to other fandoms, but I've
never seen a better standard kept than the one we have here. Bravo!

For myself, I always figured Janette and LaCroix picked this fair-haired fellow
because they had a secret hankering for the day and blue skies. Yeah, that
might be kind of treacly, but it's always been my take on it. And when Nick
gives that 1000 watt grin, it sure does seem like the sun is shining!

I'm being prosaic in answering the Caddy question, but I actually like your
reasoning for a "fairer" Nick and lighter Caddy. "g" From what I heard, the
lighter Caddy was chosen because it showed up better in night filming -- or
something along those lines.

As for a blonde, blue-eyed Nick -- well the dichotomy of that "sunshine" colored
vampire with the baby-face made for some delicious paradox and, of course, fic
elements!

Yes, my mum quite likes him too, actually--the first FK episode she saw was
"Black Buddha", and she mentioned how much she liked "the little English
one". She started watching with me after that, and was quite distressed when
Screed perished in "Fever". (Of course, she gets a bit mixed up about the
show from time to time, which led to some interesting moments when she came
home from seeing Geordie Johnson in "Syncopation" and wanted to know where
she knew him from. "Wasn't he a talk show host once?")

Those were my thougts exactly. Filming a black car at
night... well, the lighting has a bad tendency to
glare off the paint, detail is lost...

I just hadn't had a chance to post it yet. You beat

I saw the Evil Pink Shirt when it was auctioned off at Gerthering 4 and
in reality it was a lovely dusty rose colour. Still not exactly Nick's
colour, but a whole lot better than the garish fluorescent pink that the
video post-production people made it out to be. <g>
