Subject: Seline

"Selene" is correct Greek but IIRC, the script spells it Seline.

The script describes the women in the scene as prostitutes. I think it also
calls Selene the madam but since I don't have a copy I'm not sure on that point.

Romans didn't have the concept of courtesans, of course, and anyway, Selene is
running a brothel. That means legally that she is infamis, a legal status which
places her outside most legal protections, and any man who married her would
incur infamia. No senator, or male descendant of a senator down to a great
grandson could marry an infamous woman. An male infamis , among other things,
lost his right to vote, most of his inheritance rights and most of his rights
in court cases. A Roman man who unknowingly married a prostitute or former
prostitute incurred infamia if he remained in the marriage.

Roman society had this kind of double standard socially as well. A known
unchaste woman was not welcome in Roman homes of the upper or middle classes,
let alone a prostitute or former prostitute.

In any case, Selene is most likely a freedwoman, so she's not eligible for
marriage into an aristocratic family, meaning a senator or male descendant of a
senator down to the great-grandson of a senator. Such a marriage would be
invalid and illegal. She might, of course, marry a rich man if he didn't care
whether he incurred infamia. This is unlikely as he wouldn't want the legal
disability.

So no, Selene wouldn't be considered in any way acceptible in Roman society
other than the lowest classes, however rich or famous she might become.

I'd like to add that, while not unheard of, very few men of less than
patrician class 'rose through the ranks' to become generals. So Lucius,
being a patrician and likely a one-time senator, would not have married
Seline even had he been so inclined.

You tagged Nick perfectly. Please continue to listen to many Christmas

Thanks to all of you who sent feedback on my Rudolph/FK filk.

Glad it made you laugh or put you in a Christmas mood. On the other hand,
forgive me if you can't get the stupid little tune out of your head now. <g>

For our lovely Postmaster with the sweet tooth a mile wide...

Those would be the candy ones that are like M&Ms that're sold in Britain.

And Canada! Don't forget your neighbors to the north... I have an American
pal to whom I have to ship Smarties because she loves them so. :)

Eve.
