Hi friends! I'm sorry that the next installment of the Dance series
has taken so long... I started a job outside the home and my writing
time has been rather limited. I've been working on the next Star
Trek Voyager xover first, which I hope to post the end of October.
I'm afraid the final story in the Dance series will have to wait for
Christmas break? I'll post news on my site when it is nearly ready.

Subject: name for computer

Hadn't ever thought to name the wretched thing. The latest one (it was
up-dated over my vehement objections) is especially obnoxious, as it
does nothing exactly the way the other one did. And the silly little
futuristic plastic stand threatens daily to slip off the shelf and
dump the terminal on my fingers as I type. La Croix would be the
first name that would come to mind
(did I mention that it is platinum in color?), except that it has a
voice vaguely suggestive of a Russian emigre'e--a voice that startles
with its sudden, intrusive, "Sorry! It's not my fault! You have no
mail!" Yeah, I suppose some people could mute it, but I'm not one of
them. Still have to figure out how to protect against latest virus,
download Acrobat, install Soundmachine, and turn off the Spell Checker.

Well... Ol' Betsy (my 'puter) has a staticky modem for some odd reason, so
she's going to be heading for the shop.

I'm hopeful that she won't be in the shop too long, maybe a couple of days at
the most, so I don't want to be set to 'nomail' just yet...

Peace and love to one and all...

I don't have "A" favorite! So far I haven't found a fic I haven't
liked! Even those who's subject I wouldn't normally go out and look
for, I have found their point of view or style makes the story
wonderful. I haven't been able to find my story voice, but I really
enjoy everyone else's.
As for talking to my computer--yup me too! Some times I can repeat it
in public and sometimes I can't! Our cars have names, but so far I
can't decide if my computer is Nick or Nat. Both are beautiful to look
at but at times frustrating to work with! Cindy

It would have been nice if some of the writers of FK did the same. You know,
for continuity purposes. It would have saved a lot of grief on the list as
to what Natalie's birthday is and whether or not Schanke's mother-in-law is
alive or deceased.

We run a consulting company out of our house, so all of our computers
and printers are on the network and have names. The company initials
are gies (pronounced like guys), so we have names like wise.gies.com
(the main database server), lonely.gies.com (our lone macintosh),
silly.gies.com (used for gaming), fishing.gies.com and gonfishn.gies.com
(both mine!). When we add more, I'm toying with ideas like youz, dem,
and doze. Now, as for unofficial names used only in times of crashes,
well, I can't repeat those on a family oriented list. :-)

That's what I'm doing right now is revising a story I wrote a few years
back. It had a flashback to LaCroix's past, and at the time I wrote the
story, I didn't have access to tapes. So, from memory -- faulty as it
turned out -- I thought it was ten years he was with Divia before he killed
her. Then I found out it was twenty! I'm finally getting around to fixing
that bit. But it means changing a big hunk <g> I'm staring at the screen,
pondering how to change it.

I should be in bed!

Gee, my favorite fic, that's a tough one there are so many good ones out
there. But my current favorite is K.C's "When darkness falls" (anxiously
awaiting the next installment) apart from that anything from the virtual
fourth season.

Okay. I've asked this question here before, and it was roundly
ignored. <g> So here it goes again -- has anyone an explanation of
why it took Divia twenty years to ... um... put the suggestion to
LaCroix? She seems a direct-action kind of gal, so why so coy for two
whole decades? <unwrapping the cheese> Was it the evil in the
tomb that provided the final impetus?

Maybe it wasn't an idea she had from the beginning, but
something that built later. Maybe with the passage of
time, her depravity increased.

What operating system are you using? Windows 95, 98, NT, Me, and 2000 all
require you to name your computer. So do most flavors of UNIX and Linux.

Here at the Web Warren (home domain, home), almost all of our computers
have "rabbit" names. Our NT server is Ricochet, the mail server is hoppy,
the radio system is "ears" ("rabbit ears", get it?), Frank's main computer
is Bugs, his notebooks are silly and Buster. My desktops are portnoy,
marchhare, and moppsy, and my portables are Jessica and Lola...

Dunno how, but I managed to do a 'work-around' on that, on both Win95 and
98SE. I managed to not have to log on and off with a user name, also.

Now if only I could figure out how to get rid of that silly Network

I realize that newcomers -- and welcome, all! -- haven't had a chance to
find out about Forkni-l and topicality because we haven't been insisting on
it since the attacks.

We're about to start heading back. The rule is that posts have to be related
to FK. This includes FK fans, even if they're not members of the list..
We're a family. I'm still going to be lenient about things to do with the
terrorist situation

As always, if you're not sure whether something is appropriate for Forkni-l,
please ask.

To be sure we're clear: I realize it will take a while to get back on track.
I'm not going to yell at anyone or the list while we do it. It's simply time
to start back.

You're all wonderful in this situation. I'm proud and honored to be one of
the owners of this list!
