Well, I know only a few phrases in Mandarin, but I can tell you
Nick's Mandarin (Cherry Blossom) sucked. He said one of the
phrases I know, (Nih how mah, a greeting) and I didn't recognize
it at first because he said it utterly without inflection. Mandarin
is very much a language of inflection and intonation.

While I think that everyone's enthusiasm is really wonderful, as a KtK
staffer I thought I should make a few points about the idea of a commercial
on Sci Fi, especially since KtK's fearless leader has the flu and won't be
able to post for herself for a while. <G> There are many, many reasons why
running a KtK commercial would not be possible. Foremost is money. KtK was
just *barely* able to come up with the $2,700 for the recent full page
Hollywood Reporter ad. We are *eternally grateful* to everyone who
contributed, but the fact is that there aren't enough people to donate enough
for a commercial. I don't know what a 15 second spot on SFC costs, but I'm
reasonably sure it's well in excess of $10,000. And that doesn't even
include the cost of producing the commercial. But okay, let's say we do
somehow raise enough money. So we have 15 seconds of time on SFC. Which
*they* get to decide where to slot. So it ends up running at 4:00 a.m. and
the only people who see it are people who are only watching SFC because they
know they can find out the phone number to the psychic hotline or the sex
line by watching SFC. Because what we get for our $10,000+ isn't 15 seconds
several times throughout the day, it's just plain 15 seconds, *once*, on *one
day*. Then there's other issues, like attorneys, unions, copyright
infringement, etc. etc. etc. And as far as using Kristin's FK video footage,
that is *absolutely illegal*. We could use *nothing* as far as video or
photos of the characters, and *nothing* as far as FK logos (such as the GWDFC
FK jackets, or t-shirts from cons). Anything fan made with a logo resembling
the real FK logo would be illegal, and not something we'd ever want TPTB to
find out is available.

What I do sincerely hope, though, is that everyone will channel their new
enthusiasm about KtK into our next auction and our next print ad, which we
will be working on as soon as our fearless leader recovers from the flu.
We're aiming for another full page ad, but *color* this time, and possibly an
inside or back cover! So please, everyone who wants to donate items for the
KtK auction, contact Susan at SField8067@a....... Your help is greatly
appreciated. And I would also ask those of you who want to contribute money
rather than merchandise to please *bid high* when KtK does the next auction.
We will also again be giving people the opportunity to contribute without
bidding, of course.

Thanks for all the interest in KtK! We are very grateful!

Ni Hao Ma would translate to how are you, IIRC. The "ma" makes it a question.
Ni Hao is the greeting, which means hello. I took two years of Mandarin in
college and can't recall too much more than that, since I don't get a lot of
chances to practice Mandarin Chinese in Minnesota. Its possible the script
writers never studied the language, only looked up the words in a dictionary.
Not knowing how many languages Ger knows other than French and English, I
can't say if he would know Chinese well enough to put the right inflection in,
or if it was purposefully done so it would sound as though Nick's knowledge of
Chinese was limited.

(Blushing slightly) I seem to have clicked on the wrong sig! Sorry about that!
Hope I didn't confuse anyone who thought they were getting something from
another mailing list...

It simply hurts to know that the same people who gave
us the show are the ones preventing us from bringing
it back.<sigh>

I guess I'll have to buy that as the fromage du jour, because otherwise,
I would hope that with a number of Chinese actors on the set, one of
them could have given Ger the correct pronunciation.

That's right, there were Chinese actors. Maybe it was done on purpose then.

(Using the right sig this time!)
