My thoughts?

LOL!

Nick: <sniffle> Gee Nat, I feel awful. This is--
Nat: <thwak!> Oh, no you don't, buster! I feel more awful about this than
you do! *GOBS more! <sniffle/honk!> And don't you ever forget it!>
Nick: Sorry, Nat.
Nat: <sniffle/honk/thwak!>What did you say?
Nick: Um...
Nat: Well, I'm twice as sorrier than you'll ever be---even without the
flashbacks with LaCroix to prove it! <sob>

Eyes all aglitter, Nick then drags her off the the wedding chapel becuase he
has at last found the woman of his dreams---someone who can wax angstful
worse than he.

Sparky was Tracy's dog, but I thought the vampire's name was Spike. I could
'a sworn there was a vampire named 'Spike' from somewhere...
(and no, David, I'm not thinking of *that* Spike! <g> This was a legitimate

Hi Kyer,

<<I once knew a child adopted at birth who went into
hysterical screaming fits
whenever it came time to say goodbye.>>

I can relate to that, or more specifically, my son
can. since his mother and I separated two years ago,
he can't deal with families splitting up in any sense,
even in the movies. The courtroom scene in "Big Daddy"
upsets him terribly. Ditto the scene in the X-Men
movie where the young Magneto gets taken from his
mother. He'll fast forward through it. Though his
mother and I get on well, and I see him practically
every day, the idea of separation has done it's
damage. Fortunately, mom and dad are going to work on
it individually for as long as it takes. Quick FK tie
in: as a toddler, he loved the FK "He was brought
across..." intro, and would mouth the words till it
got to his favorite part, where you see the close-up
of Nick's head, fangs at the ready, and he'd raise his
arms up and do the lion's roar effect. Too cute for
words. <lol>

Considering your theory that it was the death of a
family member that scarred Nick, and that he wants
everything but is unaware of the fact, maybe it
wouldn't have to be the loss of a person, maybe the
loss of his humanity was enough to leave him walking
around feeling incomplete? Technically, a vampire
doesn't need the understated luxury Nick surrounds
himself with, so is it possible that he's in a state
of constant wanting (obsessive/compulsive behavior?)
to fill that gap? Ditto love and relationships, can he
really tap into loving someone as a vampire, the way
he once could as a human, knowing he'll bury her and
just continue on, but does it anyway, sort of going
through the motions, because it's the "human thing to
do"? Is he, in a sense, "affecting" love, more because
it fills that gap, than actually feeling the emotion?

This isi a very good point. I think she figured (assuming she was thingking
at all) that Richard wouldn't really change. At that wpiont she really
handn't seen any other vmapires and ahve no no idea how much Nick ahd told
her about the chagnes a person undergoes . She was trying to find a cure
for NIck becasue *he* wanted it, not because she saw anything wrong with it.
I can't remember if Nick ahd told her anything about all the centuries of
hunting and killing - and enjoying at least some aspets of it. She saw only
a good man trying to change soemthing aobut himhe didin't like, not the
beast he felt he was. Even in the morgue when they first met, he could have
killed her to get the blood he neededd, but he didn't. He strugtgled with
it as I remember, but overcame the urge.

I think she would have included her brohter in the plans for the cure she
was still sure she could find. I also think it interesting that when she
saw what Richard ahd become - running amok and taking the law into his own
hands - she had no real objection to NIck killing him. Like NIck she didn't
seem to wnat to give him a second chance.

>what was the episode where she sought out another
> vampire to bring her across? Was that vamp's name
> "Scar"?

The ep ws "A more Permanent Hell" and was about the rection when a meteor
was projected to hit earth. Nat sought out anotherh vampire (Spark) after
Nick refused to bring her across when she asked him to out fo fear of dying
int he meteor crash. This adds to Extremis' argument about ehr emotions
getting int he way, IMHO.

> Unless Nat had the kind of incredible control that would mean her very first
> feeding would be a swig of cows blood, and nothing else ever, her first
> killing would cause her to have the kind of guilt that would impresseven Nick.

Again, I wonder how much Nat knew about the craving for human blood. It's
not until "Fever" (or is if "Francesca"?) that Nick gives her that
incredible speech about how seductive drinking human blood is. I think it's
the first time she realizes just what Nick has been struggling against for a
century or so. Before then, her knowledge was more cerebral than visceral.

I also think that Nat would be flexible enough to accept drinking human
blood. Killing to obtain it might be a different matter, but I think all of
the arguments listed here show her to be quit pragmatic - at least about
vampirism.

For a truly excellent story that asks this very question, try Jean Graham's

It's well worth the read.

Delurking yet again ...

This is a very good point and especially could have applied in the case of
Elizabeth (the leper). But when Nick brought the doctor across, was he
really that disappointed when he started killing people, or was it more
that he feared the doctor's recklessness might expose the existence of
vampires and put them all in danger? I ask this because it's been so long
since I've seen the ep that I really don't remember.

Eric also wrote:

>Nick on the other hand immediate felt let down by his children when they
>didn't turn out like him-with their connection to their humanity still
>intact. <SNIP> More so than LaCroix, I think Nick wanted to create
>vampires that were carbon copies of himself, which was pretty
>unrealistic.

Isn't it interesting we never saw Nick bring across someone while he was
truly reveling in his vampiric existence? It's very possible he did so, but
we'll never know. He failed with Alyssa, so the closest example we have is
when Nick converted the doctor. But while he seemed comfortable and
reasonably content with being a vampire at that point in time, his motive
for doing it was pretty altruistic.

Do you think Nick might have converted someone during his really "dark
days" (he offered to bring Joan of Arc across, but she turned him down),
and if so, would their chances for survival have been any better? Why or
why not?

And does making a successful fledgling *always* take extensive guidance and
instruction? Vachon and the Inca were left to their own devices after just
one night with their master. Were they the rare exception to the rule, or
has Nick just been unlucky in his overall (known) track record?

For what it's worth, I don't think Nick really had the heart to be a "good"
master vampire (provided you define "good" by Lacroix's example) or the
necessary mindset. But I also think if his choices had been more carefully
thought out, instead of impulsive acts, he might have had more documented
successes.

On the other hand, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect converts to
have *some* semblance of self control, once they're past the first hunger.
A sense of self-preservation alone would seem to dictate that. (Especially
since there's good reason to assume that LC has converted more than one
individual, then basically left them on their own.)

But in the cases of Richard Lambert and Elizabeth, could it be that they
both had individual failings that would have eventually led to their own
downfall, regardless of what Nick's parenting abilities may or may not have
been? We don't really know much about Elizabeth's pre-vampire personality
(except that she was beautiful and apparently used to getting what she
wanted), but Richard was demonstrably headstrong and prone to always
playing the hero (or, as a vampire, the avenging angel) -- thus his
nickname, "The White Knight."

These might be easier questions to answer if the only two vampire parenting
examples we have weren't at opposite ends of the spectrum -- Lacroix and
Vachon's master. (I don't count Vachon because we never saw exactly how he
handled Urs' conversion. Did he take an active approach, or did she learn
by example while traveling with The Crew?)

Ah, yes. And then there's Divia. But let's not go there. <g>

I like that term: 'a state of constant wanting'. The state of constantly
feeling incomplete and in need of a replacement to fill the gap. (Kyer
looks around at the gazillion nicknacks taking up every available niche of
the free space in her room and rolls her eyes. Dare she go there? <g>)

I agree. Be it loss of a person, place, or thing, Nicholas is definitely
feeling bereft of something. Probably love--though not necessarily romantic
love, though he clearly tends towards that (Janette/Natalie/Emily/fill in
name of female). It could be the perceived loss of God's love.
(Kyer mental ramblings. Pay no mind.)
Nicholas turned from the Light for lack of God's Love
LaCroix turned from the Light for lack of fatherly love
Janette turned from the Light for lack of spousal love
Vachon turned from the Light for lack of brotherly love

Now there's an interesting thought.
Did Vachon turn from the Light soley because he hated the Peruvian natives?
Or did he not see a Guide and get offered a Choice?
Maybe not everyone *gets* offered the Choice? In which case, why were
Janette and Nick offered it? (I am not including anyone else in that
question because I don't recall LC saying that *he* had seen a Guide---just
Janette asking if Nick had gone to the Light as *she* had.)

This is straining my braincell too much.
Must have fic to ease the pain.
'Scuse me while I go browsing...

In either case, Vachon didn't leave Urs by herself to work out her problems,
nor did he kill her because she wasn't as happy go lucky as he seemed to be.
I think that says something for his interest in parenting. And doesn't he
say something about Urs being better than she had bee? That seems to show
that he took an interest in her even if we don't know if he taught her
directly.

> Ah, yes. And then there's Divia. But let's not go there. <g>

Maybe we do need to talk about Divia. She seems to have spent twenty years
or so with LaCroix, presumable teaching him...stuff. He seems very content
with his life until Divia makes her "request". Granted, I would expect LC
to handle being a vampire more easily that, say, Nick, but he seems to know
quite a bit of information - like putting Divia in the sarcophagus to keep
her from regenerating (or so he thought).

I just wondered. How did LaCroix not know that Divia wanted him to become
her lover? Had she not taught him the lessons about reading another
vampires thoughts or had they not shared blood in a while?

In "Amateur Night", a mental disorder overrode
vampirism, at least temporarily. Could severe mental

she "died" at the end, could the death only have
resulted in her snapping out of the hypnosis, and she

This post was returned to me because the text was to
similar to another post, at least that's the message I
got, and it was suggested I change some of the text
(hence this intro) and re-post it. I haven't seen it
on the daily digest, so I'm hoping I'm not
double-posting here.

"Hi Emily,

<<Just out of curiosity, has there ever been an ep in
FK involving any sort of magic, even just a mention of
it? Possibly in Nick's search for a cure?>>

How about the Black Buddha statuette? I think it was
supposed to grant one wish to it's owner...?

Eric"

And given what you pointed out about her emotions, it's unlikely she would
have had that kind of control.

Exactly. The other question is, how would Nick have reacted to this, given
his own feelings about killing and how he reacted to his other children
when they killed?

Bring 'em back alive!

Hi Everyone:

And here's another question...What if LC had
brought back Alyssa (Nick's 17th cent. wife) back
and then, she went beserk? What would he have
done then?

Another question (more towards Natalie and cow
blood)--What happens if Nat were to drink from a
cow with "Mad Cow" disease???? Interesting....

Oh well, I've caused enough trouble for now. <g>
