It looks like the Forever Knight page is gone from the SciFi.com series
listing.

The Forums are still there.

However, the SciFi FK webpage is still up. Of course, it could just be that
Scifi is notoriously slow at removing outdated material (recently, I noticed
that the Creature's page from sometime last May was still there <g>), but
it's nice that it's still there: http://www.scifi.com/fknight

Physically speaking, Nick may have issues which LaCroix doesn't, but
intellectually don't you think if Urs would bore Nick, that she'd bore LaCroix
as well? Seems to me after 2000 years it would take more than a good roll in
the hay to float someone's boat.

And I have to say that I think Nick is LESS likely to mistreat Urs, and less
likely to be an enabler, than LaCroix is. LaCroix likes to be in control, to
out wit, to dominate -- we've seen this time and time again in the series. He
even holds sway over Janette who is far, far older and stronger than Urs is. If
anyone is like the men who have used Urs in the past, it's LaCroix. If there is
one man Urs should stay away, at least sexually, it's LaCroix.

>I'm not really sure why I can see them together so easily. Maybe it has
>something to do with the old cliche that opposites attract? <g>

They may attract, but that doesn't mean that the relationship would be a healthy
one, especially not for Urs. She needs a man who will respect her, treat her as
an equal, and allow her to figure out her own problems. That is, if she even
needs a man at all at this point in her life.

You all do realize that, in the last couple of days, we have spent more time
talking about Urs than she actually had of screen time!! Oh, the irony.

Cindy also added:
>However, Dorothy Elggren wrote an excellent story exploring this very
>theme. It's called "The Darkness of the Soul."

Does anyone else know of more Urs related FK Fiction?? I'd appreciate titles

Actually as opposed to Bonnie Rutledge -- not that I'm opposed to Bonnie
Rutledge herself, just to being confused with her. We are our own Bonnies!
And, not readily interchangeable, if you pay attention. I mean, she actually
*likes* LaCroix whereas I would *like* to stake him with something sharp and
wooden (doesn't really matter what, I'm fairly flexible on this point).

>Laurie of the Isles
>Who is thankful you are not Kate the Cursed. <g>

Are you sure I'm not? I don't think Vachon or the Vaqueros are. ;-) Then again
this is precisely why I am not called Kirsten -- my grandmother hated the name
and threatened to call me Curse. So, instead, my mother named me after a child
who died of a broken neck caused by falling from her horse. Go figure.

Bonnie Kate wrote:

<snip> It's not that I don't agree with you here, it's just that, well, I
don't exactly agree with you here.<snip>

Hey, after reading what you wrote, *I* don't exactly agree with me!

<snip>Speaking about Urs, Vachon says to Nick, "She's like she was when I first
met her." That statement says to me that Urs has behaved differently between the
time she was brought across and now. Vachon seems surprised and disappointed by
the reversion in Urs. Maybe working at the Raven triggered it for her. <snip>

I like this line of supposition. Sure, there's lots of 'maybes,' but you have a
quote to support it! Quotes are important, especially when they're from Vachon!

Plus, the idea of supressing bad memories or a painful childhood is not a
controversial concept. Nick's played Ye Olde Denial game plenty, and we can see
some of the same phenomena going on with Janette in 'A Fate Worse Than Death'
and LaCroix in 'A More Permanent Hell' and 'Ashes to Ashes.' It's a pattern,
isn't it? Vampire mosies along, business as usual, when, all of the sudden, a
homicide case, abused prostitute, natural disaster or demon daughter drives them
to stressful flashbacks and it affects their behavior. Why should Urs be the
exception to the series rule? But this is basically a rehash of the point you
were getting to about the need for a good vampire shrink in Toronto.

<snip>I know it sounds weird but sometimes being close to someone as messed up
as yourself is more like a kick in the head and it actually allows you to
finally look inside to solve your own emotional problems.
>
> Then again, it can also just be an awful, painful, destructive mess.<snip>

Which is why I can't embrace 'Les Mis' embracing. They're Humpty Dumpty
sitting on the wall. Sure, it might make for a nice view, but if somebody
takes a fall, they're broken, and the other one's left treading eggshells
if they ever get down.

<snip>My point exactly. After all, he has Janette to understand the vampire part
of him and Nat to understand his desire to be human, but he doesn't have someone
who can truly understand the hardship of a vampire who wants to become mortal.
<snip>

Oh! Oh! This reminds me! Wasn't there some kind of theory, an "I don't take
killing as lightly as you, Vachon" idea that Urs has never killed a mortal?
Like, she's modern enough to have made it by the bottled blood suppliers
alone? Okay, that would be something about her that might fascinate Nick
beyond a 'pretector' role.

<snip>That's why there are physiologists and AA meetings and Weight Watchers
and all those other things which help people make the changes to their lives
they want to make but just haven't been able to on their own, for whatever
reasons.<snip>

Oh, but a doctor can easily say, 'Your cholesterol is too high. Take this pill
and eat less ice cream." He can't swallow for you, though, and he can't eat for
you. He can only offer his expertise. Likewise, a sponsor can lead you through
steps, give you advice, and encourage. The person with the problem can be
self-aware of what they're doing ('I'm bingeing and purging.' 'I'm drinking.'
'I'm high.' 'I'm draining a cow.' 'I'm letting myself be used and abused.') and
the reason they're doing it ( 'I wan't control.' 'I want to dull the pain.'
'I'm lonely.' 'I want to forget.' 'I want to feel loved.'), but still fall into
a pattern of doing better for a time, then falling off a wagon. I've
heard many recovering addicts and people with eating disorders speak about
'a moment of clarity' (Probably heard it on 'Oprah,' too <g>), when
their perspective shifts, and suddenly what seemed insurmountable and
inescapable becomes manageable, something they can achieve, forgive or forget.

Okay, maybe counselors and hearing the stories of people with common issues
are important contributions to inspiring that moment, hence the existence of
group therapy. I still insist that the moment itself is a private and personal
thing. That's why I keep spouting that Nick and Urs have to find their own
happiness. It's the old 'You can lead a horse to water, but you can't
make him drink' philosophy.

<snip> Ah, yeah, you could look at it this way, and it's an awfully good way to
look at things, but there are other ways to look at it, too. Most suicidal people
will fight when someone else tries to harm them, or will even save themselves
with some unconscious movement while trying to commit suicide -- it's an
instinct, self-preservation, and it's HARD to override.<snip>

Yeah, I thought about that argument, but I really, really didn't like it!
You may have noticed throughout all my fussing that, at the end of the
day, I like my female characters empowered! None of that Ophelia drowning
crap for me! No Tosca jumping off the parapet! (If only she'd turned around
and taken a couple of those soldiers who executed Cavaradossi with her!)
And Desdemona - well, there's unconditional love, and then there's just
being a twit. It's my hangup - I don't want Urs to act on instinct or
out of virtue. I want her to have that epiphany, to experience a surge
of delight and pride that she's alive. I want her to act, not react.
I don't want that *HISS* to mean "I'm afraid," but "I'm not afraid, you
pipsqueak, daddy-loving bitch!"

Okay, so I'm getting carried away, but that scenario makes Urs' ultimate death
truly bittersweet, and I like that motivation for the character SOOO much
better.

<snip> >"Well, they don't write dramas about young girls who settle for the
> >adventure that is mutual respect..." - Sarah Vowell, 'Take the Cannoli'
>
> This is a rather interesting sig line quote, Bonnie, considering our topic
here. Rather appropriate to Urs. Would she have just been another Alma or
Brianna, or Miklos for that matter, if not for "Hearts of Darkness"?<snip>

Absolutely! That episode gave Urs dimension, actual foundation for discussion.
Alma and Brianna, Bourbon, Thomas Monroe, Daniel, Feliks Twist, Aristotle, The
Enforcers, Alexandra, Francesca - whatever we cook up to say about their past is
really so much speculation, because their screen time gave so little fodder. The
only reason I don't lump Miklos in there is he at least has the peccadillo of
appearing in one episode as a vamp and one as cross-friendly whatever.

<snip> Again, I say, so many possibilities, so many potential storylines, cut
down in their prime by SSPTB (Short-Sighted Powers That Be)!<snip>

Oh, yes! I'd have loved a flash of the 1000 year gap in LaCroix's
past before Janette came along, and an episode devoted to Natalie, and
a pre-conquistador flashback for Vachon, some Crusades footage for Nick,
more Bourbon, a highlight of Screed's art days with Andy Warhol...<g>
After reading that 3rd season coverage Susan G. posted on the web, I could
have sobbed for the two 'Lost Boys' we never met, Katopa especially.
During all those 3rd season Raven scenes, I tell myself, "Yeah, that's
supposed to be Chong's band onstage! They didn't abandon her character
entirely!"

Oh, well. That's why we have fanfic, isn't it? For the stories that were
never told, but should have been. (Not that the definition applies to
half of mine. Screed in Lycra Speedos, indeed!)

I disagree!!! While, it may take SCIFI awhile to bring FK back, I believe
it will happen if we are persistent.

A good example is Battlestar Galactica. SciFi took it off their line up
for a few years and now it is back again, without fan prompting.

So, if we keep at them we should get it back sooner rather then later.

Greetings fans of the Knight,

I have just made my very first Forever Knight music video! It's under the
new Music Videos section, in the Movies index. These include cool effects,
songs from FK, and combined scenes from the series, all put together.

The first one I made, features mixed scenes of Nick giving in to his hunger
for blood and also the passion from his many loves. These scenes are
combined with FK's "The Hunger," as the background music. It is about 3
minutes in length and about 30 megs, so it will take a while to download
(make sure you have signed up with freedrive.com to download this movie,
along with a couple others I have stored there). Please be patient. It's
really cool and I think you'll like it. :)

The next music videos I make will be dedicated to Nick and Janette, then
Nick and Nat, and more!

I hope you like it & please tell me what you think,

Subject: Re: Toronto(ish) question - DWI vs. DUI; also, Coroner vs ME

I'm not in Toronto, but here in Western Canada, we don't usually use either
abbreviation; instead, we talk about "impaired driving", as in "Constable
Smith was guilty of impaired driving in an accident which killed two other
people. He was on his way home from a barbecue held by the head of the
police Traffic department." (Sad but true!)

Also, in Canada we don't do roadside sobriety tests, which I gather is what
happens in the States. Instead, you are asked to blow into a Breathalyzer,
which tells the officer your blood alcohol level. It is an offence to
refuse to take a Breathalyzer test.

Coroner or ME? Well, in Ontario, they are officially called coroners (
http://www.pace.gov.on.ca/paceweb/owa/intersrv_en.disp_service_unit?IN_UNIT_ID=UNT0004901)
but in at least three provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia) they are
officially Medical Examainers. So Nat's job title is Coroner, but she could
easily be called an ME by a cop who doesn't care about the bureaucratic
niceties.

Your humble & obedient servant,
