Of course, in the FK world there is getting old, and then there is getting
*really* old. If you are not twice as old as Nick's car, you are still a
fledgling, babycakes.

Will the next war be intergalactic in nature - FK(lingons) in Space? Will we
be subjected to the horrifying sounds of Ratpacker's and Enforcer/Klingon
warrior's frustrated efforts to communicate? Will a babelfish help at all?
And who shot J.R.?
Stay tuned.

Re: Famine etc.
How long you can go without food is a complex question. If you don't eat,
you will feed off your fat stores, using ketones, for energy. You can do
this for quite a period of time. Your body does not need carbohydrates -
there are no essential carbohydrates altho dark leafy greens contain some
good vitamin (you don't need to drink milk for calcium - you can get calcium
the same way the cow does - from greens.) There are, however, essential fats
and essential fatty acids. If you go with insufficient food, your body
starts eating itself - burning its fat and its protein stores (weakening
muscles including the heart). If you are writing a story, you will want to
distinguish between absolute starvation and insufficient food. People will
last an incredibly long time on small amounts of food - years even -
concentration camps, POW camps, radical diets, fasting like Ghandi, drought
or war ravaged areas where food supplies dwindle to drastically low levels
over time. Human beings were designed to weather these stresses ie eating
the fall harvest and fattening up like bears on carbs right before the
extended winter shortages. Northern peoples are renowned for feasting like
kings after a good kill, then going without for long stretches before the
next successfull kill. Hunting groups stranded out in the wilderness because
of a sudden thaw, saw their comrades die within weeks while others lasted for
months on almost nothing. Of course, they ate the sled and dogs and clothing
guess what else, but that was a last resort.

And don't forget, ketones suppress the appetite. After a period of time, the
person may not "feel" hungry in the usual sense, but from personal
experience, after a couple months, you feel this intense, soul level hunger
that defies description. And after a long period of starvation, the worst
thing you can do is "feed" the person. They have to be reintroduced to food
slowly over days. Reintroducing food too quickly causes terrible stomach and
abdominal symptoms. People have been known to die within hours of being
rescued for this reason.

Someone absolutely starving, that is with no access to anything, is not going
to last long, and it will be longer or shorter depending upon their pysical
condition, fat stores, general health. And for fun, remember that starving
people have been known for their resourcefulness resorting to eating grass,
all manner of insects, pets, leather goods, and each other not excluding
their own children. During the potato famines, Ireland's outlands were
stripped of everything, including the grass and leaves.

FK vampires do not seem to have much tolerance for starvation. They seem to
go squirrley pretty darn quick.

Thanks! This was a pretty informative answer! What I'm wondering, in addition
to all of what you wrote, is the effect of complete starvation with complete
withholding of water on a human being. Do the hunger and thirst demand equal
attention, or would the thirst quickly eclipse the hunger?

Portia, really not a psycho -- I promise!!!

Whoops! I guess being "pretty sure" doesn't count for much -- at least in my
case, in this situation!

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea...wait, no. I blame it all on the COMPUTER!

Thirst eclipses the hunger.
